    I'd never really thought before about how Luke looking to the future and his fear of what might be was his failure with Ben and Yoda called it all those years before. Yoda is so damn wise.

  • @mattboy5296
    @mattboy5296 4 года назад +73

    I said this is another video when I rewatched the sequels, but I'll reiterate it here: I believe one of the things with Luke is that he finally had an experience similar to Yoda and Obi-Wan. Perhaps the reason Luke could sense the good in Vader is because he never saw firsthand the man Anakin used to be and thus saw his fall. He only knew him as Vader. But with Kylo, Luke saw the process of his fall from the beginning and just like with Yoda and Obi-Wan, he was directly involved with it.
    So Luke realized that he fell into the same trappings as the old Jedi Order before him, and he becomes jaded and cynical and decided that the Jedi needed to end because if even he couldn't reform them then there was no point. He began to buy into his own legend and thus thought he had to be absolutely perfect and infallible and when he wasn't he was ashamed. Yoda comes back and teaches him a final lesson about the importance of failure and knowing when to move on from the past. Not forget it completely or "kill it" like Kylo said, but instead use it as a guide into the future. The Jedi simply need to reform their core teachings to survive, not recreate what was but create something better. "We are what they grow beyond."

      This is added upon really really well in the novelization of TRoS, where it talks about the certain perspective Leia is able to bring as a Jedi teacher, that the dogmatic Jedi Order were not able to. Evidence of this is in the recent Clone Wars season, the citizens of Coruscant have no idea who the actual jedi are and what they stand for. They are separated. The Jedi order pulls force sensitive from a young age to eliminate their attachments and increase focus. But theres a downside, and Leia is the exact opposite, she has real world experience, she is rooted in the real world. From politics to social work, she understands the actual people of the galaxy. Its expanded upon in the novelization that these are lessons Rey received from Leia, lessons that Yoda, Obi-Wan, Luke never could have. This is the reformation the Jedi need looking into the future, "there is nothing inside those books the girl Rey does not already possess" and "we are what they grow beyond" is a truly beautiful way to see the evolution of the Jedi from the prequels to into the future with this new understanding of who they need to be. They cannot and should not be the same Jedi order from the prequels, expecting that is a recipe for repeating the past, and ignoring the lessons the prequels taught us.

      Dude you said it so perfectly wow

    • @kungolaf4499
      @kungolaf4499 4 года назад +3

      Exactly. Luke was naively sentimental towards his father in the original trilogy. His father had watched millions of perish, families, children, mothers, fathers killed as well as tortured countless innocents. Luke hadn't seen that evil first hand, he hadn't seen the child corpses or felt the guilt of the ones who felt responsible for those children or Vader.
      Ashoka, Obi-Wan and Yoda had and that is why they could never bring Vader back. It is a commitment complex on Vader's part: _There is no way for me to go back normally yet I do not want to die as I fear death. And to control those insecurities I make myself believe I control death by bestowing it people as naive as you._
      But through some miracle Luke's unconditional love for Vader made Vader reach ultimate resolve, his fear of death faded as he saw his son be the jedi that young Anakin wanted to be and be tortured. He sacrificed himself to look upon his own son and feel some sort of closure.
      But in the Sequel Trilogy, this is painted as something highly unrealistic and fairy-tale-y which recontextualizes the Return of the Jedi as even something more special. That is why it appeared in this edit's resolve climax as well.

      @@kungolaf4499 I remember hearing people criticize the idea that Luke would not go with Rey to try to save Ben when he had gone to save his father. But not only did Luke experience Ben's fall just as Obi-Wan had Anakin's ("He's more machine now than man. Twisted and evil.") Luke knew that Ben would never listen to anything Luke had to say since he saw Luke as betraying and trying to kill him. Obi-wan would probably never have been able to save Anakin, and it took someone else (Leia) who saw Ben a different way and showed the unconditional love for Ben that Luke showed towards Vader to save him. Plus, Kylo had already killed someone in his family who loved him to prove his dedication to the dark side, but even that ate at his soul. But because of that Luke knew that his going would only make things worse and play into Snoke's hands. And Luke was right, because even Rey wasn't able to turn Kylo right then, and Luke knew Kylo hated him so much he was able to use that to trick him and help the Resistance escape.
      Wow, talking through that just now made me appreciate how he was saved in TROS more. I still don't think he should have been saved like Vader was, but I can accept it a lot better now. The movie could have been better, but it isn't the death of the franchise that so many claim it is.

      So many people miss that the Jedi were far from perfect and that Luke learned about them from two of the Masters most responsible for the fall of the Jedi and the creation of Vader and the Empire. They're not exactly unbiased. I think wanting the Jedi to end had a lot to do with what Luke had learned about the Jedi in the three decades since we last saw him, not just on his failure regarding Ben.

    You know, I think Yoda ultimately saw what Luke's fate was going to be. I didn't understand it before, when I first watched the OG trilogy. But, having watched basically...everything Star Wars at this point. I think Yoda always knew. Luke wanted so desperately to become a Jedi, but didn't fully grasp the sacrifices..and ultimately the challenges he would face along the path. Luke only saw one part of the path..and was so blindly focused on it, so that when he was finally faced with a true challenge as a Jedi...I.E. facing Ben when he was teetering on the edge of darkness...he failed. It wasn't until the very end, that he truly came to understand...what it truly meant to be a Jedi..and it's not simply "wielding a lazer sword, and facing down the First Order" But, I think what I loved most...was that at the end of all things..Luke, truly embraced the Force I believe for the first time. Another great hit from HFS.

    • @hilnnerfarias913
      @hilnnerfarias913 4 года назад +2

      TLJ is my favorite of the sequels, because of Luke's arc, to me it did tie with the original trilogy it showed perfectly why Luke is who he is, he is impulsive, his impulsiveness almost led him to kill Darth Vader when he implied that he would go after Leia if Luke did not turn to the dark side, but he stopped himself. Same with Ben, in a moment of pure instinct he thought about ending it, but he stopped himself again, but in a whole new different scenario, when he felt the burdens of being the Last Master of the Jedi and even so, not being able to save his own nephew and with the fear that his actions would eventually create a potential Darth Vader 2.0, the key word here being FEAR (the path to the dark side). But in the end he stayed true to his words in RotJ "I'm a Jedi, like my father before me", redeemed and forgave himself and let loose all his fear to face Ben and face his destiny like Obi-Wan once did too.
      *I fuckin' love Luke Skywalker, godamn*. TLJ did nothing but to increase my level of respect for him.
      But the rest of the film, except some few moments and parts of Kylo-Ben arc, were forgettable if not terrible.

    This is why I don't understand the TLJ Luke hate, the "This is not my Luke" thing. 😐
    For me TLJ Luke is still the Luke we all know.
    He's just in a Point of view in the Last Jedi that he learned that everyone can Fail.
    I like what you said Gaxelle, that he teaches Rey to Fight Failure! 😄

    • @kungolaf4499
      @kungolaf4499 4 года назад +1

      @Xd Dx How is someone's opinions wrong? And how does something being shown through others means elsewhere negate the effect of the piece of media? And it is not like Luke gave up on Ben, he just knows for sure that he cannot be the one to save him since he was the one who traumatized him. He is Ben's boogeyman and that is why he gives the responsibility and the ropes to Rey.
      Remember when Yoda and Obi-Wan wanted the same thing as the Emperor in ROTJ? All three wanted Luke to kill Vader and Yoda and Obi-Wan have demonstrably been more right about these matters than Luke. Yet Luke defies every single one of them and saves Vader instead. Luke disobeys the old generation and their teachings to pave way for a new path for new generation. Yoda learns this too by The Last Jedi: _We are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters._
      That is why Luke doesn't give any direct orders to Rey unlike OT Yoda and Obi-Wan. He has grown beyond them and knows that the new generation has the reinvent the rules a little bit to save the galaxy and reinstate balance. Luke's ROTJ trick of unconditional attention didn't work on Kylo in Episode 8 when Rey tried it and even Yoda and Luke don't have the answers (because they now know better because didn't have them even in the OT because they were wrong!).
      Leia though was determined in Episode 7 that Ben could be saved and when Leia loses hope Luke reinstates that hope by saying: _No one's ever really gone._ If that isn't clear indication about Luke's believe in Ben I don't know what is. He even gets teary-eyed on the battlefield when he realizes how ferouciously Kylo is attacking him. He is heartbroken that he cannot be the one to save him but he does his duty to save the Resistance.
      And yeah, Luke is pretty cut and dry. Atleast in a New Hope. Some of his lines make him sound like such a corny serial protagonist like with _Oooo boy! Am I glad to see you!_

    Like they constantly said on Mythbusters, failure is always on option. That was a good video. I understand why things happened because of how the movies were made, but looking back now it would have made more sense to start training Luke when he was younger if they had always expected him to confront Vader and the Emperor, especially alone. They were asking more of Luke than probably any Jedi who ever lived, and they half a$$ed his training. It's a good thing it's scripted and not reality.

    There are two things you need to watch. The first is the video "The first Medal of Honor ever recorded" so you know who the real Super Heroes are. The second is the Movie "Ashes in the Snow" so you see what "Socialism" really is.
