Thank you for doing all the work on finding out the best way to store our new Oxide inks. One of the stamping "guru's" just had a video advocating storing them on their sides. When mine were shipped to me, some of them were placed, or wound up on their sides, and it was very clear that the Oxide inks do pool towards that side. I got them all cleaned up, and make it a point to store them flat. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
I think many people are confused because I have seen videos where Tim Holtz himself says you can store them on their sides, but I've heard stories of them leaking that way. I had to ask the source for my own piece of mind. I like these inks too much to risk ruining them.
Thanks for the info! And thank you soooo much for not intentionally moving the camera when you took it off of the tripod!!! I could watch the video to the end with only minor discomfort instead of feeling sick for hours (or days). 💞
I store my ink sponges on the back of my ink pads with velcro, too! Like you, I noticed the Ranger sponges fit perfectly behind the small distress ink pads. I found some small velcro circles at Dollar Tree, bought two packs and put one circle on the back of each of my distress oxide pads and my large distress ink pads. It works so well I went back and bought 4 more packages of the velcro to use on my other brands of ink pads! 😄 It is SO cool to see a RUclipsr who does this!
@@JessCrafts Now if I could only find an ink pad storage method that works for me. I love yours, but I have to be able to see all of my supply options easily or else I find I don't use them. Lol! Maybe a bigger craft room would help? Hmmm...pretty sure my hubby would veto. Thanks for your inspiration!
I do this with the velcro circles from Dollar Tree, as well! I use them for my Distress Oxides and Distress Inks and other inks I have. I have a few Stampin' Up Inks and I store the sponges directly inside of the ink pad. I also need to see my supplies or I don't use them. I use tons of clear containers, but found the Best Craft Organizer - Swivel Traveler Ink Pad Storage for about $15 at a garage sale! (Link below if you want to see what it looks like.) Mine came together as a tower, but I removed the base and stacked each side next to one another on my desk. It holds ALL of my Distress Oxides and other large ink pads, my foam blenders and extra sponges. I have the small Distress Inks and store them in a clear drawer on my desk. LOOOOOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!! I also label each with my label maker, but I swatch each color on white sticker paper then use the name label over the top. www.scrapbook.com/store/bss-300pi1002.html?g_acctid=420-528-6360&g_adgroupid=&g_adid=&g_adtype=none&g_campaign=Performance+Max+-+All+Products&g_campaignid=18001470846&g_keyword=&g_keywordid=&g_network=x&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwhIS0BhBqEiwADAUhczs_fQ97U7t24BvF4-4HtV3F9pTaLFY3uf9jjsosR-yFwTwLluCigBoCYdUQAvD_BwE
A simpler way to Velcro them to the back is to use the velcro from the 3M Command damage free wall hooks. It has adhesive on the back and it will not come off the back of the pad. I've used that from the beginning and I've never had any issues with it not sticking. I just buy the refill packs (no hook included) and cut a half inch off each time I need one. I get about 7 pieces off of 1strip and I think you get 10 to a pack. Then you don't have to mess around with any glue. 😊
Thanks for the great tips, Jess! I use the adhesive-backed Velcro dots for my blending foams. I found, though, that the ink could soak into the label on the back of the ink pad from the foam (I suppose if I got the foam pad extra "juicy"), which would cause the label, and the Velcro dot that was adhered to it, to peel off. So I have taken to "laminating" the label on the back/underside of the ink pad with packing tape. Then I just stick the blending foam to that. Never had a problem with the Velcro, or label, peeling off that way. Just a tip, in case someone doesn't want to use Super Glue. Anyway, thank you again for this video! :)
Some of my Oxides looked like the ink had pooled on the side after being shipped, so it would definitely be an issue. Right now they're stored in an Organize More unit. They make one specific for Distress inks, but mine is the regular sized inkpad storage unit, I bought the inexpensive spacers they offer for the Distress pads (basically cardboard you put in the back of the slot so the inkpads don't go too far in, since they're shorter) so both my regular inkpads and Distress inkpads live in the same unit. I learned about them from Jennifer McGuire. I hung my unit on the wall. Thank you for this video.
Thanks for the info! I have spent a small fortune recently, bought all the tins and now realize I need to store them on their sides. Big bummer but glad to know now.
I actually enjoyed seeing how you store the pads. I like to see organization details of craft rooms and how their tools and materials are stored and organized. I’m redoing my craft room right now and am looking for varied inspiration.
Great video Jess, I learned so much from it. I was totally unaware that DO pads need stored flat. So so glad I watched!! I store my pads in the TH DO tins. They save some room as they each hold 15 pads. That's another storage option I thought I'd mention. Thanks so much Jess, you always post the best videos. ❤
Thank you Jess. I love the Distress Oxide inks, but they are an investment, so I want to take good care of them. I only have the mini size of the other Distress inks as I don't use them as much. The little storage tins are great for them and the round blending sponges fit in the back without Velcro , works for me! Love your videos, always informative and fun👍👍👍
I am so glad you shared this!! I was storing mine on their side and sure enough I opened my peeled paint oxide and the liquid was all pooled at the side and in the container. I cleaned it out and have it flat now hoping it will level itself out. Thank you for sharing this before I potentially ruined them all... hugs

I have all of the original Distress Inks as well as all of the Distress Oxide Inks that have been released so far. I use two drawers of an Alex cabinet like yours to store them. They are stored flat with the blending foam attached at the back with velcro. When a layer is full I just stack them. Yes, the Distress Oxide Inks do leave a circle of color on the one below, but that doesn't bother me. I've never stacked any of my inks, regardless of brand, on their sides. Thanks for making this video. It reaffirms my own conclusions about these terrific inks,
I have every color of the Distress Oxide inks and I store them flat in one of those plastic 11x11 containers you can buy at Michaels, Joann etc. I printed a chart from the website that has a little square with the name of the ink at the bottom of each square. (each color is listed including the newest ones). Then I took a little piece of a cotton ball and put a sample of the ink on each corresponding square. I numbered each square and put that number the top of the ink pad also with a magic marker. I stacked them in the container with the color chart on top. Then I can look at the chart to find the color I want, then find the ink pad by the corresponding number. Works great as long as you remember to keep in ink pads in order by number in the plastic container.
I'm glad I found this video. I had already decided to stack my Oxides on a shelf but learned that they should be on flat their bases. I thought they should be upside down so now I know not to do that. I have put the sponges on the back but they are fatter and don't sit well but are good enough.
Thanks for sharing.. I have a very tiny work area and to save space, I just recently labeled and placed all of my Oxide inks on their sides (& I will be fixing that momentarily too). I noticed that you have the pads attached to the bottom as I do, and I just wanted to pass along that I noticed the pad tends to stay 'wet' after being used & I had them sitting on scrap paper to protect my desk surface from being stained by the ink. Thanks again for the info & happy 'carding'.
Yeah I noticed that the oxide ink doesn't dry on the foam pads, which has been kind of frustrating. i don't have a pretty work surface to worry about but it's still something to be aware of.
Red yellow blue green orange purple black brown white 9 color family's is my take. And also always store all inks flat as have had even regular distress inks leak on there sides.
Thanks for the tips, Jess. Mine are flat but I was seriously thinking of changing, now I'm glad I didn't proceed. BTW, you use the same NN flower stamp for your ink swatches that I use.
sure appreciate the storing of Oxide Inks. I have just invested in the first 24 colours and LOVE them, love them. So I am going to put them flat right now ;) Thanks Jess!
Hi Jess, Just found your video. It’s certainly still relevant, and happy I’ve found it. I’ve been storing my oxides on their side, and just today noticed my Evergreen Bough ink had separated! Wish I had discovered your video earlier, but at least I can reink any others that may have separated. I honestly didn’t think through the difference in viscosity and density between pigment and dye ink. Now looking at my reinkers I can easily see the separation. I just want to confirm to any doubters out there, your research has been proven to be spot on accurate! Store oxide inks flat! Hope your home all is back to normal. Although there’s some things lost that can never be replaced, thankfully sounds like no one was injured. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. 👍👍👍
I heard Tim himself say that the Distress Ink (regular) is ok to dip into the Oxide on accident, but don't put the blender from the Oxide into the Regular (the pigment is what'll mess up the regular ink pad). I have one pad per color, but 1 blender TOOL (and 1 extra made from some other stamp thingy). I always store my inks (all) flat.
How do you manage with keeping the lids on the inks when stored on their sides? Mine always fall off unless I store flat. Would greatly prefer on their sides though. Also....doesnt the ink from the foam pads velcroed to the cases make a mess on tge lid of the one behind it? I've not done it that way assuming there would be a mess. Love the minis cuz I could put the inky side into the bottom on the case, velcro side facing out, which also let me just poke my blender tool onto them and they were locked and loaded without me touching them! Lol. But nit so easy with the full-sized pads. I've upgraded to all large ones now and miss that. Any suggestions? I love your channel, your videos, knowledge, research, and fun! Keep up the great work! You are appreciated!
Thank you for your kind words. I think my lids may stay on more easily because they are packed with only a bit of room between them. I don't find the foam on the original distress inks make much of a mess on the lids of the ones next to it but it definitely would with the oxides. The oxide ink doesn't seem to dry on the foam so it's a bit messier in general. Looking at them there is a bit of excess ink on most of my regular Distress Ink lids but it's never bothered me. I didn't even realize it was there until I looked. I would look into a system that separates each ink on it's own shelf or divider I guess. Sorry I can't be of more help.
I store my regular inks flat, upside down, stacked 6 deep in shoebox size box. I store my oxides flat, cover side up same way. I have blending pads for each color, individually stored in zip lock plastic bag, used for jewelry/beads, 1” x 2” with label for color. I keep all those together in 1 large ziplock bag. Ideally I would like to find a box that I could store the blending pads vertically, separated by color family with tabbed dividers.
Geeeez! the price we pay for these ink pads you would think they would issue a statement or warning about how to store it for heaven sake 🙁that’s a little bit irresponsible😒 You’d think Tim would’ve mentioned something about it
You have them labeled on the side, or end so you could stack them and one glance you could see what the colors are, then I see you went to your drawers, like that system also.
FYI, information I received today (05/11/2020) from Ranger when I inquired about their new Tim Holtz Distress® Ink Pad Storage Tin that they state on their website can be used to store both the Tim Holtz Distress® Ink Pads and Distress Oxide® Ink Pads. I wrote them because the Tim Holtz Distress® Ink Pad Storage Tin stores them on their side. Apparently they can indeed be used for the Oxide Inks (YEAH!) [QUOTE] Thank you for contacting us. I understand your concern regarding ink pad storage. Tim recently addressed these concerns in his latest Facebook Live Q&A demo. Throughout the years we are always learning and growing. When we launched oxides we did suggest storing them flat but have learned that in reality the ink pads could be stored on the sides just like the regular Distress Ink pads without a problem. I understand the confusion but I hope this helps clarify. As with any new product that comes to market, we are always learning and developing new ways to use the products, techniques and of course storage. I hope this helps. Best, Kelly [UNQUOTE] Just wanted to let you know
Thank you for sharing! I did personally notice some slight leaking when mine were stored on their sides so I'll probably keep mine flat but I definitely think everyone should do what works best for them in their conditions.
Hi. Thank you for the video. I wanted to buy more distress oxides but I wanted to know how long will they last if they are used sparingly. Thanks again!
If you worry about settling pigments, you should rotate their orientation. So storing them on the side and turn them frequently is better than have the pigment settling at the bottom.
Just received my order of Distress Inks and many had leaked inside the plastic packaging. (How they are sold in groups of four minis.) Baby wiped them all before storing flat in bead containers.
What I’m wondering is why we had to rely on someone like you (thank you very much) to give us this very important information and ranger just couldn’t tell us that?
I think Ranger has since said it doesn't matter in they are flat but I haven't personally contacted them again. I think it may be a climate thing. I've lived in a dry climate and a humid climate and it does seem to effect art and craft supplies. So it may not matter to some. Definitely keep those lids on tight if you live in a dry place.
@@JessCrafts : Jess, I SO agree. I live in CO. I always order reinkers when I buy new ink pads. My ink pads dry out here so much faster than when I lived in OH.
Glad I found this video as I'm redoing my craft room and purchased the Alex drawers and I was going to lean them on the side. Can I ask the name and where you got those baskets for the inks? I've been struggling to find baskets that fit in the top drawers. Thanks for sharing.
Jess Crafts Thanks for getting back to me. I'll check my local dollar store, maybe I'll get lucky. Can I bother you for the measurements, that would be a big help. Thanks again.
Great info, Jess! I have my regular Distress Inks on their sides as well as the Oxides. Time to do a little rearranging in my craft room. Thanks for sharing. ~HUGS~ #kindnessmatters
Not yet. But the foam pad is going to leave marks on the one below it so I'm not sure what I'll do. I saw someone make trays for them which might be necessary. I'll update when I decide.
Jess, thanks for the tip. I have one question about the regular distress inks, I don't know if you can help me. I live on the tropics and I have all my mini ink pads flat on their tin can, and sometimes when I reached for them I found that they have bleed all out and are a complete mess. Any idea why this is happening?
At Jennifer McGuire's website. Her Ink Swatch page isn't updated but here's the link: www.jennifermcguireink.com/images/2017/07/TH-Distress-Oxide-Merged-7.5.2017-web-1.pdf
What's annoying to me but the foam doesn't play flush on the back of the Ink pads. Like they lift up a bit at least for me . But I do have the foam on the backs lol
Yeah it would be nice if it was flush but it would also make the pads even bigger. However it's the most convenient way I've seen or heard to keep track of the foam pads so sticking with it for now.
I'm new to this. Can you tell me what the difference is between Oxide and Ink? I bought 4 at a craft fair and have just realised through watching your video that 2 are Oxide and 2 are Ink? Many thanks for your help!
Although I’ve been a Stamper forever, I am new to distress inks. I’ve just started with a few of both the oxide and regular. I’m sure this seems like a dumb question, but I’ve always stored my ink pads upside down to keep the ink at the surface of the pad. Does it make a difference with these pads?
TYFS this video.... Distress Oxide Minis are available from Simon Says Stamp in sets of 12 different colorways for about $72. Happy Addiction Shopping lol
Jess Crafts I've just bought all the colors new and old but full size. Honestly I bought one color after much reistance but was hooked so I've bought them all ...no hope for me lol
MadHatters Original I heard Tim say during a demo that the oxide formulation doesn't allow a mini pad format, so if you're buying minis I'd check because they're likely regular distress, not oxide..
Renee VanEpps The other lady made a mistake, there are no mini's oxide inks, and have never been. Tim Holtz's chemist tried to develop it but they scrapped the idea this year (2018) The inks just did not hold well in a mini size.
I've seen those but I like to be able to take them out and put two colors next to each other. There's other things that work about this system for me but everyone should certainly do what they like best.
That's unfortunate. I've had mine for years without a problem and have known several other crafters who have as well. Plus the Ranger website says you can store them on their sides. Sorry to hear that happened to you.
Kind of a bummer that they sell the tin to hold the oxide inks on their side! Now I’m a little miffed that I wasted my money on something that can actually damage them! Shame on Ranger! 😡
Unfortunately from what I can tell the official answer has changed over time. It also seems somewhat dependent on climate. For me I've had success storing them flat.
I’ll just store the tin on its side. Seems like laying them flat makes more sense. You would think they would include some sort of instructions on the ink pad, but I guess they want us buying more. I do love the oxide inks tho, and never was really happy with the original Distress ink pads. I may just sell those.
Well I’d be annoyed too if I had to spend that much money for each ink pad and Ranger doesn’t even put a little note on the ink pad cover. they’re making millions of dollars from these ink pads😠
I also contacted Ranger and received the following reply that contradicts your information in this video. Looks like 2 different employees of Ranger have two different ideas about storage. Here is my email response from them... Distress Oxide Ink Pads can be stored on the side or facing up (no need to store them upside down). Also I asked about cleaning distress oxide from stamps: Thank you for your email and interest in Ranger products! Distress Oxide Ink can be cleaned from rubber stamps with Ranger Water-Based Stamp Cleaner (rangerink.com/?product=inkssentials%E2%84%A2-water-based-scented-spray-cleaner), and Ranger Clear Stamp Cleaner for clear stamps (rangerink.com/?product=inkssentials%E2%84%A2-clear-stamp-cleaner). Some warm, soapy water will also do the job if stamps are cleaned immediately after use.
Thanks for sharing! I have heard of some people who had leaking when storing them on their side and I experienced it a bit myself but sometimes ink and other crafty materials are effected by climate. So everybody should definitely do what works for them and keep an eye on investments like these inks to discover the best solution for them.

Hope your home all is back to normal. Although there’s some things lost that can never be replaced, thankfully sounds like no one was injured. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. 👍👍👍
Thanks for the information. I just started with distress inks and was wondering how to store them.
Thanks for sharing that tip about not storing them on their side
Thank you, thank you for this. I have mine flat and now they will stay that way. :-)
I always store my inks (all) flat.
thank you for this update, and for showing your organization system. much appreciated!😊
Thank you so much, this video was very helpful Jess. I will have to rearrange my storage. TFS
Glad it was helpful! I would have been so bummer if anything happened to my Oxides because I had them on their sides for awhile.
Thank you so much. I rather be safe than sorry! 😁
Sorry I can't be of more help.
ginaspod rubberbands
I use double stick tape to hold the pad to the ink pad. Works fine although may have to replace eventually.
Thank you so much. Yes, oxide tutorials. Please 😉
Apparently they can indeed be used for the Oxide Inks (YEAH!)

Thank you for contacting us.
Best, Kelly

Just wanted to let you know
Thank you for sharing!
Silke Schümann if you remember of course!!
Just received my order of Distress Inks and many had leaked inside the plastic packaging. (How they are sold in groups of four minis.) Baby wiped them all before storing flat in bead containers.
Hi Jess ! The lid on my distress inks seems to open if I stored them by their side. How do you to take care of this? Thanks a lot for your ideas!!!!!
Brilliant video and thanks for your time and helpful advice
I rinse my blending pads out with water and can re-use them with all my inks.
Great idea!
Glad it was helpful. I got the little baskets at my local dollar tree. I looked but didn't see them online. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Jess Crafts Thanks for getting back to me. I'll check my local dollar store, maybe I'll get lucky. Can I bother you for the measurements, that would be a big help. Thanks again.
10.5 inches long, 4.5 inches wide, 2 inches deep. Good luck finding them. I've been able to find them several times in at least 2 different states.
Jess Crafts Thank you, big help!
Jess Crafts BTW if you live by the Ranger warehouse then we live like 40 minutes from each other. I'm a Jersey girl, too, lol!
Thanks! I appreciate the info.
Great info, Jess! I have my regular Distress Inks on their sides as well as the Oxides. Time to do a little rearranging in my craft room. Thanks for sharing. ~HUGS~

I am with you. I prefer to have each ink have it's own foam pad.Do you store your pads on top of each other?
Not yet. But the foam pad is going to leave marks on the one below it so I'm not sure what I'll do. I saw someone make trays for them which might be necessary. I'll update when I decide.
Thank you 😊 very much, I will change mine too
Thank You , any little hits or tips are helpful...tfs 🥰
What's the difference in appearance between the inks and the oxides? The inks are just stronger-colored?
Thanks so much for the thorough follow up!
Thank you. These tips are very helpful.
Hi Wilma, I'm sorry that's happening. I would definitely contact Ranger. They are super helpful and responded in less than 24 hours to my question.
Jess Crafts Thanks, I'll do that.
Thank you for the information and thank you for sharing
What company was your flower stamp from -i couldn't quite understand. I like that one!
It's from Newton's Nook Designs but it appears to be retired, sorry!
@@JessCrafts thanks! Any idea what set it was in? I can keep checking ebay -you never know!
I believe it's Newton's Nook Fanciful Florals
Where did you get the swatch printout for the 12 new distress oxides????????????
At Jennifer McGuire's website. Her Ink Swatch page isn't updated but here's the link: www.jennifermcguireink.com/images/2017/07/TH-Distress-Oxide-Merged-7.5.2017-web-1.pdf
Thank you for all the tips
Good information.
Thank you had no idea that I could be damaging expensive ink pads. Why take a chance on ruining them.
Thanks for the info. Connie
Thank you for this tutorial!
What's annoying to me but the foam doesn't play flush on the back of the Ink pads. Like they lift up a bit at least for me . But I do have the foam on the backs lol
Yes! That annoys me too!
Yeah it would be nice if it was flush but it would also make the pads even bigger. However it's the most convenient way I've seen or heard to keep track of the foam pads so sticking with it for now.
What happens or happened if you share the pigment foam with the dye foam?
I'm new to this. Can you tell me what the difference is between Oxide and Ink? I bought 4 at a craft fair and have just realised through watching your video that 2 are Oxide and 2 are Ink? Many thanks for your help!
Here's a video where the creator, Tim Holtz, explains the difference: ruclips.net/video/sdQ21YvFFVA/видео.html
Jess Crafts great, thanks!
Great Demo!
Thank u for this info!
I have heard that is a good way to store inks but I don't personally store them that way. I store my oxides face up and they always stamp well.
Brilliant tips! TFS X
Thanks for sharing this info.
Very smart 👍🏻
Very interesting video.
Hi There! I might have missed this, but where do you get the Alex drawer inserts that the distress inks?
The ones I used were from the Dollar Tree. They've had them on and off for a few years so you may still be able to find them.
I just organized all my oxides on their sides 😫😫
I had too and would have much preferred to save on space with that method, but don't want to ruin these pads.
Interesting because every store has them hanging. They do not have them flat.
Thank you for the tips
Hi Jess, thankbu for your video. I enjoyed it. I learned alot from this video. Tfs 😊👍
Yet they sell the storage boxes that stands them upright
For your distress inks why not pile in sets of two..Turn them and you can see your labels on the front.
TYFS this video.... Distress Oxide Minis are available from Simon Says Stamp in sets of 12 different colorways for about $72. Happy Addiction Shopping lol
Mine are on order. Can't wait for the new colors!
Where? I only see full size??
Renee VanEpps The other lady made a mistake, there are no mini's oxide inks, and have never been. Tim Holtz's chemist tried to develop it but they scrapped the idea this year (2018) The inks just did not hold well in a mini size.
Thank you, Jess!!!😻
I have a pad for every colour and I won't apologise for it. 😂
LOL. I'm the same way. Makes them so much easier to use.
Me too. Its it way easier that away.
Good for you ladies! I was wondering if people bought a whole blender, I'm new to this, for each color? Pads sound a lot cheaper!!
Tv's. Very informative.
I find the foam pads on the bottom is to thick to stack them.
RANGER does have ink swatch pages as does stampin up and many others so you dont need little pockets can store in a regular binder
Have had problems with storing regular ink pads on side as they have leaked out the side
I did this some time ago prior to this video but Yikes! they sure do take up a LOT more room so I removed them since I dont have that kind of space.
Great thanks
@@carolstella6776 did you see the videos that talk about using glycerin on the ink pads to bring back to life when drying up….
Very helpful!! You kind f sound annoyed though.
Glad it was helpful.
Also I asked about cleaning distress oxide from stamps:
Thank you for your email and interest in Ranger products!
