They couldn't have known I had coins and tea on my last turn. The birds are the only faction that had the actions to hit me, which they did, but the constant harassment of the other 2 (especially lizards) kept their focus on the decree. By the end, everyone was so close that nobody could afford the action loss of hitting Vagabond, lest they sacrifice too much of their own position to win. Birds had no chance of winning without going all in on the last battle. Vagabond is a strong faction overall but the Scoundrel is probably the weakest of all the characters so generally you don't need to hit them a lot to make enough of a difference. The early tea, 2nd hammer and good questing RNG led to my victory more so than my opponents letting me have it.
Oh, I’m not suggesting they let you have it. Of course no one knew you had coins. I’m just surprised you were never forced into the forest (not necessarily at the end). Especially after your excellent start. As you say, Scoundrel is considered weaker, so they didn’t think about it as much. That’s what I mean by meta. It was a very efficient game by you.
@@j.prt.979 Meta definitely makes a difference. We play together a lot and all 3 of them are very experienced so we can predict what each other is likely to do and cannot expect the others to make mistakes. That's where the next level of meta comes in which is to try to surprise each other with outlandish and bold tactics. It's the reason Root gets better the more you play with the same people. Scoundrel may be the 1 Vagabond that canose without being sent to the forest and I played with the knowledge that my opponents know how to size me up and wouldn't be likely to come after me unless I made a huge leap in my engine. Had I chosen a stronger Vagabond, I would have expected more violence and probably played very differently.
@@j.prt.979 Hey! Decoy here chiming in. Any battle that I redirect into the scoundrel is one that doesn't hit the cats or lizards. Getting points vs policing the vagabond is a delicate balancing act. Oftentimes sending the scoundrel into the forest effectively ends their game. I could have easily hit them one more time but I decided to attack the cats in the bottom fox clearing, which I weighed as being more valuable than a few more vagabond damage. As it turns out I rolled poorly, missed out on a potential point, and ended the game at 29. Them's the breaks 🙃 Great game though. Everyone had a great chance to win given one more turn. Those are always the best games! Cheers
Did you consider torching the mouse clearing with 2 sawmils? That's what I would do at that point, because it would hurt the cats wood economy more and at that time I thought they had a higher chance of winning then the birds (time proved me wrong tho lol)
I didn't consider that for a few reasons. First is that it wouldn't have given me enough points and I needed as many as possible on my penultimate turn to ensure that I could cross the finish line on the final turn. Second is that it didn't do enough to check the birds whom I was also worried about. The central fox clearing hurt both cats and birds which bought me enough time to win the game (though as you saw the birds game thiiiis close). One mistake a lot of Root players make is focusing so much on a singular goal. Be it scoring points or hurting the leader, many players experience what we call perceptual narrowing where they have difficulty multitasking because they are only focused on the most important goal of the moment. A great Root player can make moves that accomplish many important goals at once. That's what makes this game very challenging and rewarding to improve at.
on Turn 8, if you had crossbowed down 1 cat to gain infamy and THEN scorched earth, wouldnt that net you more points? because you get 1 for each cat destroyed too at that point
I have a doubt: Been the vagabond, when you burn the clearing, isn't supposed that you gain VP for each dead eagle? considering they are hostil on that point ? I really appreciate if you can help me with that rule.

Did you know coins give you extra card draw? 🤯
I just found out myself last week!!!
Great game! Strong plays all around. I am a little surprised you didn’t get punched at least one more time, but I guess that’s meta for you.

@@nitrorev Thanks for the answer! Yeah, I usually fall into this trap of focusing only in the leader

No, Infamy is only in battle, not scorched earth or favour cards.
I just tried this in a game too few days ago, to my dissappointment only the 2 buildings net me points @@nitrorev

No, Infamy is only in battle. Favour cards, crossbow strikes and Scorched Earth are bot battles so they don't give victory points.
