She married a man you loved and adored her, and got to stay home and raise her children!!! Not call they from some studio or from across the country!!! She stayed married until her husband died and she lived to a ripe old age!! I hope to see her again in paradise when all is new again and she is resurrected. Revelation 21:3,4 ❤️. Sheila Guyse's daughter, Sheila Crystal Devin (the one quoted in this video) is my cousin through Guyse's first husband. She is pretty amazing in her own right. Under her professional name, Sheila Anderson, she was one of the most well-known Black models in the 70s and 80s and was signed with the Ford Modeling Agency. She also acted in movies like Star 80 and played the role of Cecily Pigeon in the short-lived television series The New Odd Couple. More than all that, though, she is just a beautiful and wonderful person. If you have time to profile a legend still living, I'd love to see something about her.

The sound is perfect; The music has just the right tempo, not too quiet and not too loud, compliments the vibe of the video as well as your voice - which by the way, is just as perfect and full of kindness and joy, it's contagious! 😄You can also really tell that you've spent much time doing research, many of these actresses and icons I thought I already knew everything about, yet you always have interesting facts to share that I never knew of! I adore the way you manage to balance things in a way which fills the receiver's mind with neutrality despite the big scandals and controversies that often are covered. I remember watching your video on Brigitte Bardot and loved the way you praised her for her icon status, without giving her the "Saint treatment" if you know what I mean lol, a lot of people tend to overlook controversies like these because of their "pop-cultural significance", so you are very appreciated 🌸 You're amazing, happy new year, from a snow-covered Sweden 🥶 ❤

Thanks for documenting her. I too fell in love with classic films as a teenager and began watching "race filmsproduced by Oscar Micheaux and others. These films were produced on a low budget and were created to offer black actors an opportunity to star in films as the lead. During the Jim Crow era, Hollywood would not allow black actors to star as dignified characters opposite their White counterparts. Most were reduced to portraying domestics or pullman porters. Also. colorism played a big role even among Black films which enabled light skinned black actors to star as the leads as well. I would also like to see a review on Doan Drake, who concealed her ethnic identity in order to maintain roles in Hollywood during the 30's and 40's. Ms Drake later on admitted that she was Black. Concealing one's true ethnic identity became a common factor among entertainers during the 30's, 40's and 50's who were trying to obtain roles among White actors in major films. Anglo-Indian actress, Merle Oberon engaged in this same act of deception as well. For fear of losing roles portraying White women opposite leading White actors of her day.

I remember seeing a couple of these films in the late 90s, and early 2000s. Around this time I learned about Oscar Micheaux, one of the first Black filmmakers. This video made me remember that. It was wonderful seeing a wonderful all black cast when I saw these films. As always, a wonderful, thoughtful video. Ms. Sheila Guyse was a beautiful and talented performer. What a voice! I'm so glad I learned about her abundance of great work. Thank you Karine. Well done as usual.

Thank you, for sharing background information about Sheila Guyse! Guyse was an amazing actress , as well as, a wonderful tender hearted human being. But, please be respectful (and sensitive) when describing a person's key life choices and especially when concerning their family members. And also understand that the dominant cultural perspective of an era often lends a hand in persuading and/or diswading one's behavior. And too, I'd like to enlighten you just a bit more about Guyse... Sheila Guyse was a very lonely lady and wasn't very happy with the industry and how her career was developing when she met her husband. For example, there were times when work and lucrative pay was very scarce and so she often felt abandoned, forgotten and stagnated. Moreover, the entertainment industry was in many aspects quite exploitative as it still is nowadays. Consequently, Guyse struggled financially at times, and so, the financial roller coaster was often emotionally overwhelming. There were times when Guyse barely had enough money to purchase something to eat and/or to purchase new stockings and other essential female items. However, she had the skills to know how to look fantastic with less. But, she eventually met a man that absolutely adored her (and wouldn't exploit her) and eventually they fell in love and married. Her husband alleviated her financial burdens and was too very attentive, caring and protective. Overtime she decided to take a rest break from acting and overtime she became content with being housewife. Guyse worked outside the home as well but at her leisure... And too, understand, that in those days as many African Americans were leaving farming and servant occupations they began to enter the world of entrepreneurship, the blue-collar and white-collar workforce... The workforce was becoming much more diverse and so garnering consistent work (and a consistent paycheck) was every man's ultimate goal. So, a sanitation worker/garbage pick-up person was (and still is) a respectable blue-collar job (manual labor) position. Moreover, the pay by comparison to most other blue-collar (and even white collar) careers is far above standard and still is today. The sanitation worker nowadays earns about $22.00-$42.00 per hour and that's without overtime and there's usually always overtime... Simply, her husband earned a middle-class income. His pay was consistent (unlike many entertainers and no matter their level) and even though her husband was far from being rich and famous he did provide her a middle-class lifestyle and treated her well. Therefore, I feel that she wouldn't want her husband to be demeaned in anyway when describing her rise and fall from being a Hollywood starlet.
