A few interesting facts: a very large gorilla has 24” upper arms, 22” forearms, 14.5” wrists, weigh 550lbs, stand 6’ tall. It was hard to find this data but it was worth it.
Nope. No registered Gorilla in good standing has reached 550 pounds or 250 kilos. Only obese and fat specimens in captivity. The largest healthy gorillas rarely reach 210 kilos. The largest hardly usually exceed the barrier of 200 kilos and this on very rare occasions. Otherwise your data is fine... I guess.
@@idiliavillagra2803 Fred Merfield shot a 6’ 588lbs gorilla in 1920. George Vanderbilt shot another 6’ 540lbs. Edmund Heller shot two gorillas over 5’10” weighing 500 and 545 pounds. These were all wild specimens.

@@yashvintackoory2893 A gorilla's strength is 10x their body weight, so a 200 kg gorilla could lift 2 tons. Could you imagine a human with that kind of relative strength? Someone with 100 kg weight could lift roughly 1000 kg, enough to fully lift an entire car, albeit barely, which weights roughly 1300 kg, and the man who performed the heaviest deadlift, julius bjornsson, could lift 2.05 tons at the time of his deadlift, over 4x his actual deadlift. Now imagine mike tyson with that kind of strength.
A friend of mine visited the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois. in the gorilla cage they had a handle with attached weights just like you would see in a weightlifters gym, he witnessed the gorilla pull that handle with one arm and it registered him lifting 500 lbs
I remember many yrs ago, a friend was telling me why gorillas had such strength compared even to a human if similiarly muscled..he said even if we had the same muscle density, which we dont, we would Not have the gorilla's strength because of how the ligaments attach to the joints..something about how the gorilla has them positioned in a way that allows Much more leverage per given amount of muscle mass...
Well, it’s because their muscles work slightly differently from ours. Putting aside the pure density, the muscles of gorillas and chimpanzees activate in FAR greater percentages as compared to humans. This makes them very strong, but also reduces their coordination: human hands are better for fine, careful movement. And that makes sense; that’s kind of our whole shtick, instead of beating something to death we would just make a sharp-stone tipped spear and throw it at our target

Many years ago, I saw a TV show about the strength of a Gorilla. It was at The San Diego Zoo. There was an automotive spring welded to a steel plate. They welded a steel handle to the spring and bolted it to the wall in the Gorilla's compound. A local strong man tried to pull that spring and couldn't budge it. They let the Gorilla out and in no time, he found a new plaything. He stood flatfooted and with his right arm pulled that spring across his mighty chest. ONE PULL and the spring was ruined. I believe the word is 'flaccid'. It just sort of hung there---ruined---the Gorilla got bored and went over to the other side of the compound and started twisting car tires into figure '8's'. Gorillas could absolutely tear your head off of your body!
I'm impressed with their physical strength no doubt. But their intelligence is exceptional and watching them grapple is amazing. If you're into any form of grappling youll appreciate watching them go at it.
I had a conversation a long time ago about Silverback with a a buddy of mine. @@yunggpacino Because most bodybuilders train specifically for size rather than strength, and you’re just nitpicking and trying to start an argument for no reason.
They literally weight train constantly by climbing and breaking trees down all day for food. They’re genetics make it easier for them to build muscle but that doesn’t mean their muscles just appear.

Bodybuilding and powerlifting require different body. Generally (nothing 100%) power lifters need short limbs and a long torso, while bodybuilders need long limbs and a shorter torso. Also, bodybuilders look a lot better if they have small joints (makes the muscles between look bigger). Which is exactly what you don't want to powerlift. Different goals.

@@jooot_6850 The weight is irrelevant... what matters is the muscle density and strength to weight ratio. Even if man and gorilla were the same weight class, gorilla will always be around 3-4x stronger simply because of it’s muscles. Lol not a chance... even The Mountain would get his cheeks clapped by a gorilla and it isn’t close at all lol
While all the things about the diet and his muscles are true, the very foundation of the gorillas strength is his bone size and structure. I stood once in a museum and there was a human skeleton nearby a gorilla skeleton. One of the major misconception is we think about size either in terms of body height or in terms of mass (in flesh), but the truth is, the bones of the gorilla are massively big! At least 2-3 times the circumfrance of the human bones, which allows him to have much bigger sinews and therefore build up bigger muscles too. And his muscles of course are not only big, but due to its wild lifestyle the meat is red and allows for more oxygen to be carried. I think a silverback is far stronger than 4 times average human male. Its proven that even a chimp is far stronger than a man
I think that's why Wilt Chaimberlan was so strong. It wasn't the outward fleshly muscles, although of course they matter. But the overall skeleton and bone density that made him so strong. Same with other species, it's not so much the muscles, although the fibers can work differently, but the skeletal structure and density.
@@souldesire5932 Yes, although this is pretty obvious, everybody overlooks this. The muscle quality though as you said is very important too for sure. In school I learned the muscle-tendon-bone attachments in gorilla limbs is a bit different than in humans, increasing their leverage and making them stronger but not as quick.
They're only slightly slower than the average human. You damn sure aren't going to out climb them. You'd better hope you're on a completely flat area if you want to out run them.

@carlo er There is no "exactly". There have been no accurate enough tests. Tigers and lions have approximately same bite force which is pretty similar to what gorillas are claimed to have.
As land animals go, humans are pretty frail for their body weight. It's not so much how incredibly strong wild animals are as how flimsy human anatomy has evolved to be in comparison. Cro-Magnon was physically stronger and had a larger brain case than modern man.
We can afford to be frailer relative to our size because we are so wildly intelligent. This is the trade that mankind has made. We humans are not brutal survivalists anymore, like Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal, but have instead adapted to become conquerors.

I was hoping for something like: They are strong because their muscle fibres are made this and that way, their bones are curved and this and that (I dont know). But instead it was: because they exercise and eat well -> Those are not the reasons, if it was, any human doing the same thing would be as strong. Didnt learn much.
I sort of remember a long time ago studying the musculature of gorillas in my physics class. There was something about the insertion point of their biceps tendon being located farther from the joint armature than a human. In other words, for the same level of exertion, a gorilla naturally outputs a much much greater amount of torque. Thus they are not only bigger and more muscular, but the actual mechanical setup of their musculoskeletal system is far superior to humans.
But Mark Henry has proven he is stronger than those wrestlers. He even won the Arnold Strongman Classic once against proper competitive professional strongmen. At his best he was legitimately one of the strongest men in the world.
Apes have a higher percentage of fast twitch muscle fibers, which means they are more adapted to strength vs aerobic performance, and that is why they are so much stronger than humans of comparable size.
They aren't "so much stronger" at all. Relative to size, gorillas are weaker than humans and chimps, and chimps are 1.5x as strong as an average man at most. Gorillas can't lift 4000 lbs or anything like that, they will never be as strong as Brian Shaw and etc. These animals are hyped up for no reason.
@@broccoliphysics8209 I agree with you about the hilarious exaggerations about animals strength compared to humans. But I am sure a schimp is more than 1,5x stronger than an average human. Just look at adult schimps and gorillas, they definitely have an explosivity and speed as no strongman. It requires like a 100m sprinter to compete. Therefore I am sure that these primates are significantly stronger than a human with same weight and size. And I really think a 180kg gorilla is stronger than a 200kg Brian Hall. The raw strength combined with the explosivity makes these primates worth to avoid even for a beefy MMA fighter. But all the claims of strength like: schimps(5-10x stronger than human) and that a 140kg orangutang is 40! times stronger than a human(a woman working with these, claimed that in a documentary) are of course strong exaggerations(wish that orangutang good luck with deadlifting a truck or benchpressing 3 tons...). Gorillas are actually quite fatty, compared to animals like lions. 38% body fat. (All these stats are tested). A man who goes to a gym for 1 month is stronger than an average chimp, a strongman would crush both. I would love to see what would happen if somebody got the biggest gorilla they could find, gave it steroids and a strongman training program (if it's at all possible to train a gorillla in that way). The results would be fascinating. Obviously it wouldn't be worth it if the animal suffered in any way, but otherwise
How strong is a gorilla? Let me put it in an easy to understand metric: If you increased Kane's strength by a factor of three, the absolute weakest gorilla could still rip his arms off and beat him to death with them before he could even react. In comparison, on the set of Every Which Way but Loose which featured an orangutang, the orangutang actually did strip a 1973 Bonneville to the frame by hand including tossing the engine block over 10'. A gorilla is about twice as strong as an orangutang.
The problem is that humans as a whole stopped being dependent on physical strength so we've become weakened to stand toe to toe with pretty much any animal out there. If humans were required to maintain a physical fitness regiment all their lives then maybe would have been a little more powerful. But not powerful enough to fight a gorilla in it's prime either.
Fuk that. We worked with our brains more and created life waay easier and fun and comfortable. We even got to space. All of that wouldn’t have been possible if our ancient primate ancestors relied on strength only.
Dont forget that gorillas and chimpanzees are actually so heavy that they cant swim, they sink, because of their dense muscle. And humans are the best long distance runners at land (of course not every individual human, but potentially). Its also different strategies and it wouldn't be only good to be as strong as a gorilla. Its also different strategies. But humans are relying less and less on physique overall, and when times get harder that could come back and punish us

@@latetootheparty 🤣
If you climbed trees all the time you would be really strong too
Well, it’s because their muscles work slightly differently from ours.

@@yunggpacino Because most bodybuilders train specifically for size rather than strength, and you’re just nitpicking and trying to start an argument for no reason.

Gorillas are herbivorous, predominantly ground-dwelling great apes that inhabit the tropical forests of equatorial Africa. The genus Gorilla is divided into two species: the eastern gorilla and the western gorilla, and either four or five subspecies. The DNA of gorillas is highly similar to that of humans, from 95 to 99% depending on what is included, and they are the next closest living relatives to humans after chimpanzees and bonobos.

Bodybuilding and powerlifting require different body. Generally (nothing 100%) power lifters need short limbs and a long torso, while bodybuilders need long limbs and a shorter torso.

If a 100 kg human had the relative strength of a gorilla, which is 10x their body weight, they could fully lift an entire car, which weights roughly 1300 kg.
In Our human wisdom we make a much wider range of Cocktails also.

Gorillas use their teeth poorly. It is documented that when humans are attacked by a gorilla, there are signs that they died to the constant chewing of the gorilla, which could last up to 30 minutes. Any big cat would cleanly and swiftly dispatch of a person even having a weaker bite force.
False, gorilla's have a Bite force superior to any big cat out there and it doesn't need 30 minutes to kill a human
@@SouthDraftCorp it is well documented that they are so poor at using their teeth to bite (not predators) that despite their brute strength and bite force, it can take UP TO 30 mins to kill a human.
Gorillas are not killers and have no finesse. A gorilla with a lion's brain however is a different story.
You have poor reading comprehension, I did not say they had a weaker bite than big cats, and I said up to.
Gorillas aren't built to tear mammals apart with their mouths like cats are though so you expect that
@@JT-km6th The chances of a gorilla chomping on you to kill you is pretty slim. You're more likely to have all your bones shattered and your skull crushed. If the gorillas teeth were shaped for killing, no doubt their bite would be deadly, but they eat plants mostly
@@Cptnballsac See, you go off what you think, I'm going on documented cases. It's called science.
Gorillas use their teeth FAR more than you think, and even though they have a strong bite, they aren't good killers, highly inefficient.
Gorillas are without doubt the strongest and most powerful apes living today and the largest primates!
Off course not a question
Other than me
Yes just not 10 times stronger. Only 3-5 times stronger
@@sharpballer7751 *6 times stronger on average. This result is based on a jumping test
@@animalexpertandonlinedebat6051 what jumping test?
I never expected to see kane compared to the strength of a gorilla but I'm glad it happened
I remember Wille B at the Atlanta Zoo. I saw him display an enormous power I had never seen before! He was sitting down and when he became annoyed with the children watching him, reached over in on motion to a big tractor tire and hurled it into the plexiglass in between us an him🤣
I was hoping for something like: They are strong because their muscle fibres are made this and that way, their bones are curved and this and that (I dont know).
@@MaGi_TekK now that is good information and interesting! Thanks!
Gorillas are so majestic! I hate seeing them in cages.
Kane... really??.. what about Mark Henry? I've seen that dude pull a truck
Mark henry is 400 pounds too.
I think in terms of weight, height and strength ratio, Kane is the best example. :D
@@WildCiencias him or the Undertaker !
But Mark Henry has proven he is stronger than those wrestlers. He even won the Arnold Strongman Classic once against proper competitive professional strongmen. At his best he was legitimately one of the strongest men in the world.
@@WildCiencias what about brian shaw or hafthor bjornsson
I think it is much easier to make friendship with a gorilla than trying to fight him.
@@broccoliphysics8209
I agree with you about the hilarious exaggerations about animals strength compared to humans.
Of course a 150kg strongman is stronger than a 70kg schimp.
@@patricj951 Chimp strength has been tested and it's 1.5x at most. What feats of chimps and gorillas requires a 100m sprinter to complete?
Gorilla strength has never been tested in static strength, and by measuring their jumping height and arm length, it's determined they're weaker than humans of the same size. Gorillas are actually quite fatty, compared to animals like lions. 38% body fat. (All these stats are tested).
A man who goes to a gym for 1 month is stronger than an average chimp, a strongman would crush both. Chimps have been doing arm restrain tests in strength, and many of their numbers were weaker or only slightly stronger than the AVERAGE man.
@@broccoliphysics8209
Seriously I don't know from where you got that information. Chimpanzees are well known to be very strong, though not as strong as often believed. Chimps perform several one arm pull ups with ease, which only 1 of 100000 humans manages. And that requires very hard training. The fingers are very strong. Yes, human athletes can with specialised training in some cases probably come close. Maybe beat the chimps in some exercises. But a chimp being only 1,5x stronger than an average human can't be correct.
@@broccoliphysics8209 a strongman isn't stronger than a gorilla and I'm sure of that , you probably made that estimation based of muscle percentage of captive gorillas which showed 40 percent and that's not an accurate measurement.
There are other factors like
- fast twitch muscle fibres
- bone density
In which the gorilla excels . Brian Shaw wouldn't beat a gorilla even if it's smaller than him , it's no match and there are multiple reasons for this too
Gorillas: swing on branches and pull up trees and have a mass greater than any other ape
Humans: wHy ArE gOrIlLaS sO sTrOnG?
No my buddy that squestion makes al sense Of the wolrd since the gorilas eats just plants and have that massive strenght the same way chimpanzee doesnt have more strenght beacuse they are MoVIng ArOUNd trees all day is beacuse they're muscules are literally build diferent to makes them beable to have that streght
It's amazing how they can achieve such muscular development and stength without eating the sort of high protein foods which bodybuilders need, like milk, eggs or meat.
A wise teacher once said you can get all your nutrition in better quality from edible land plants and sea plants.
Plants have more protein than meat. All the largest land mammals are vegetarian.
You are aware that there are vegan body builders and power lifters out there right? Probably one of the more well known is Patrik Baboumian.
Yep. But important to remember they are a different species despite closely related. We cant even digest the foliage they mainly live on
@@zakosist I know, but what is it about their stomachs that makes it possible for them?
It's puzzling, because you would think that they need the same foods as us, being primates. Cows have 4 stomachs to digest grass.
With the music and narrators voice, I feel like Im playing a PC video game about Rome
A lot we can learn from gorillas there. Big and strong, capable of catastrophic damage yet bashful and would rather avoid fights. A gift from mother nature. THE GENTLE GIANTS OF AFRICA.
I would love to see what would happen if somebody got the biggest gorilla they could find, gave it steroids and a strongman training program (if it's at all possible to train a gorillla in that way). The results would be fascinating. Obviously it wouldn't be worth it if the animal suffered in any way, but otherwise
Gorilla on teen would be wild
How strong is a gorilla? Let me put it in an easy to understand metric: If you increased Kane's strength by a factor of three, the absolute weakest gorilla could still rip his arms off and beat him to death with them before he could even react. In comparison, on the set of Every Which Way but Loose which featured an orangutang, the orangutang actually did strip a 1973 Bonneville to the frame by hand including tossing the engine block over 10'. A gorilla is about twice as strong as an orangutang.
They don’t start many fights, but they end all of them
The problem is that humans as a whole stopped being dependent on physical strength so we've become weakened to stand toe to toe with pretty much any animal out there.
I feel like if we live in the wild and climbed and all that to survive we would be as strong as chimps.
But humans are relying less and less on physique overall, and when times get harder that could come back and punish us
Lol humans no matter how much they train could top a gorillas strength even on steroids lol ....gorillas will own any human
