2007 NBA Finals Game 1 Spurs vs Cavaliers Full Game Highlights

  • Some of the best plays (and every basket) from the first game of the 2007 NBA finals. NOTE I added some good defensive plays from Tim Duncan in the post and tried to get every Lebron James shot, turnover, assist and block. Obviously had some spurs favoritism with these highlights, but nonetheless wanted to show Lebron's performance from his first NBA finals game as its now part of NBA lore (He played in like 40 finals games up to this point). I own nothing.
    www.basketball-...
    Lebron James 4-16 14 Points 7 Rebounds 4 Assists & 1 Block (11:58)
Tim Duncan 24 Points 13 rebounds
Tony Parker 27 Points 7 Assists
    Spurs 85 Cavs 76

I remember Stephen A. Smith saying before this series that the Spurs don't want to face the Cavs because of the greatness of LeBron James. The Spurs then proceeded to shut down LeBron in this series holding him to 22.0 PPG 7.0 RPG 6.8 APG on 35.8% FG, 20.0% 3pt, and 5.75 TOV. Spurs truly don't get the credit they deserve. One of the more underappreciated dynasties in the NBA.

Spurs had better coach, playoffs experience, better players, better disciplined players and smarter players. Lebron averaged 6 turnovers in the NBA Finals shot 36% fg, Ilgauskas shot 35% from the field. We all know what Kobe did in the playoffs as a 22 year old. (Sentinel from X-men) DESTROYED! 22 year old LeBron was just shut down by this experienced spurs team forcing him to shoot the jumper. If he wasn't the only legitimate scoring threat they had, Cleveland could've forced this to at least 6 games. They had an ugly second half until the end of the fourth, but only lost one of the four games by double digits in this series. Just too much pressure on a 22 year old guy to carry a team that's an offensive liability, besides himself, but an asset on defense.

I guess the blame should go to the stupid coach who let Lebron play all those minutes. Lebron definitely always got the special treatment by coaching staff and media. If any other player is as unproductive they bench they ass and sub in someone else. If the coach of the Cavs would have done his job correctly, he would’ve sat Lebron for a lot more minutes. Lebron was holding the team back and the game would have been more competitive if they subbed him out and the Cavs might have even stole one

You should watch Game six of the Pistons Cavs series. LBJ's teammates also picked up the slack in that game too to close out the series. The 07 Cavs weren't half as bad as people love to remember. They were a really good defensive team and were able to stay in most of the games in this series because of there defense. Had LBJ gone off at all they could of won some of those games but the Spurs closed the lane with doubles, limit his transition pts and forced him to shoot jumpers and he couldn't adjust.

Had LBJ played against the Spurs like he did against the Cavs they could have easily pushed that series past 4. Wade the year before practically had no help in the Finals yet he still carried his team to a championship against a Dallas team that defeated the "dynasty" Spurs team you're talking about. Not one of Wade's teammates averaged over 15 pts yet Wade was still able to carry them to a chip. Had LBJ played the same exact way Wade did instead of choking then the Cavs possibly win that series. The spurs DID NOT OVERPOWER the cavaliers. Lebron played bad. 22 ppg and shot 35%. The last two games were won within 3 points. Zyndranus ilgauskaus played great and had 10 reb. a game and one game he had 10 OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS an nba record. Game 1 lebron had only 14 pts and played 44 minutes. All he needed was 10 more to win that game. I'm not saying he choked. He just underperformed and his team had great defense. The team held duncan to 18 ppg with 44% shooting as a big man. 4 players averaged in double digits on the cavs. Boobie gibson, sasha pavlocic, and drew gooden all played better than they did in the regular season, the only one who didn't play as good was james. He went from 27.3 on 48% shooting in the season to 22.0 ppg on 35% shooting. He kept taking ill advised shots and was playing much more passive than how he played against detroit the previous round. Sidenote larry hughes was injured. Had he been healthy the cavs would have had an even closer series.

You are right, and you didn't even mention the TO. bigz held dunkn at a very low per and points (even through he wasn't that great offensivly either) and the rest of the role players played a lot better than they actually performed in reg season. Mike brown tried and managed to keep the score at low levels which it would be better for the cavs.actually if you look at all
games you would see that they were pretty close. So, I do believe LeBron was the reason for the sweep. If he had play as he did with the pistons, cavs could be able to steal one or two games from spurs

Iverson had a legendary coach who had a squad that had players that were well known to defend. McKie, Mutombo, Snow, Bell. Lebron had all star ilgauskas and a good supporting cast. His supporting cast played really good in the eastern conference playoffs. The 2007 NBA Finals felt like a #1 seed vs #8 seed western conference 1st round matchup. Pretty much what happened next year in 2008 1# seed Lakers (Kobe & Gasol) vs #8 seed Nuggets (Carmelo & Iverson) it was a sweep 4-0. The Nuggets NEVER lead at the end of each quarter throughout the series.

Jordan took a worse team than the 2007 Cavs to 6 games against a much better team than the 2007 Spurs in the 1989 Pistons. The 1989 Pistons were 15-2 in the playoffs, tied for the 2nd-best playoff record ever in the 4-round format.
The 2007 Spurs had lost 4 playoff games in the West alone before sweeping the Cavs in the Finals. In the 1989 and 1990 Playoffs, the Pistons were 22-2 against non-Jordan teams.
    1989 ECF best scoring teammates
    Hodges 12.0 ppg on 45%
    Cartwright 10.5 ppg on 41%
    Pippen 9.7 ppg on 40%
    Grant 9.3 ppg on 50%
    2007 Finals best scoring teammates
    Gooden 12.8 ppg on 50%
    Gibson 10.8 ppg on 44%
    Pavlovic 9.8 ppg on 36%
    Varejao 7.5 ppg on 67%
The Cavs were also ranked 2 of 30 in rebounding, as opposed to the Bulls' 22 of 25 rank in rebounding. The 2007 Cavs held Duncan to under 45% FG in the Finals, the 2nd-worst shooting series in Duncan's Finals career after 2005.
The 2007 Cavs clearly had far superior defensive and rebounding help than the 1989 Bulls, holding the Spurs to 85 or less in 3/4 games
And remember, MJ played great in the 1989 ECF
    (30-6-7-2 on 46%)
unlike LeBron in the 2007 Finals
    (22-7-7 on 36% FG and 5.8 TOpg)
    badly outplayed by Tony Parker
    (25-5-3 on 57%)
Video - Tony Parker Schools LeBron's Defense - 2007 NBA Finals
LeBron played so poorly, that he was the only player in Finals history to shoot under 40% FG (35.6%) with 5+ TOpg (5.8 TOpg) in an NBA Finals. The only person to average more TOpg in an NBA Finals is Magic Johnson with 6.0 TOpg in 1983, but he also had 12.5 apg when no one else has reached 11.5 apg in an NBA Finals. Despite LeBron's all-time historically bad performance, the 4 games were only decided by a margin of 6 PPG.
so MJ was doing way more to create those opportunities for his teammates, and was far more responsible for whatever production they had than LeBron for his teammates, and MJ was playing against a way better team. Keep in mind 3 of 4 games of the 2007 Finals were in single digits despite LeBron's negligible contribution on both offense and defense.
Had you replaced LeBron with prime Jordan in 2007, the Cavs would have swept the weak East 12-0, maybe 12-1 if they got unlucky
    - two 0.500 teams
    - Pistons with no 4x DPOY Ben Wallace or Larry Brown
and beat the Spurs in 5 or 6 games, with Jordan shutting down Tony Parker along with playing great offensively being the difference.

    • @NobodyTouchesJordan

Jordan didn't make the 1989 Finals because he played a better team than the 2007 Spurs in the ECF, and was in a much tougher conference than the 2007 East.
The 2007 Cavs only made the Finals because they played in a very weak conference. If every team in the conference is bad, of course a bad supporting cast will make the Finals by default. This also applies to teams like the 2001 Sixers, 2002 Nets, 2003 Nets.
It's much more impressive to take a 15-2 playoff team to 6 games in the ECF, after beating 2 50+ win teams to get there, than to beat easy competition for 3 rounds only to get swept in the Finals against the only good team you faced.
The 2007 Cavs are the only team since the 1987 Lakers to beat two 0.500 or worse teams to make the Finals, proving how easy of a path it was. For reference, Jordan only faced two 0.500 or worse teams in his entire playoff career, the 07 Cavs matched that in one single playoff run alone.
then they beat the 2007 Pistons without 4x DPOY Ben Wallace who had left. the East declined so much in 2007, that the Pistons had the 1-seed with a 53-29 record. This is the 3rd-worst record for a 1-seed in the 4-round format, after the 2003 Pistons and 2002 Nets. and as expected, the Cavs were swept when they finally faced a legitimate team in the Spurs.
had Jordan faced two 0.500 teams and the Pistons without Ben Wallace, the 2007 Cavs with Jordan would have easily made the Finals and beaten the Spurs for reasons mentioned in the 1st comment.

Hay muchas errores en lo que tu has escrito. Te respondería en español, pero tengo que escribir en ingles para que los otros en este sección de comentarios puedan entender.
The 1989 Bulls that I was comparing had no all-stars besides Jordan. That includes Pippen and Grant who were not yet all-stars and just average role players in their 2nd year. As the first comment showed, even with Pippen and Grant, Jordan's teammates played worse against the 1989 Pistons in the ECF than LeBron's teammates against the Spurs in the 2007 Finals.
The 2007 Spurs were 16-4 in the playoffs and 12-4 against non-LeBron teams. The 1989 Pistons were 15-2 in the playoffs and 11-0 against non-Jordan teams. 15-2 is tied for the 2nd-best playoff record in the 4-round format after the 2001 Lakers' 15-1. And the Pistons' 2 losses came at the hands of Jordan himself.
The 1989 and 1990 Pistons combined were 22-2 against non-Jordan teams in the 89 and 90 Playoffs but the 2007 Spurs had 4 losses in one Playoffs alone.
You said that LeBron's teammates had a good FG% because of his passing, but Jordan did a much better job on offense (and defense) in the 1989 ECF than LeBron in the 2007 Finals against a better team than the 2007 Spurs.
MJ played great in the 1989 ECF
      (30-6-7-2 on 46%)
unlike LeBron in the 2007 Finals
      (22-7-7 on 36% FG and 5.8 TOpg)
So Jordan, in fact, created much more opportunities for his teammates in the 89 ECF than LeBron in the 07 Finals, but his teammates still had worse production (on defense as well as offense). The 1989 Bulls were clearly a worse supporting cast than the 2007 Cavs on both offense and defense.
Yes, Jordan did not get to the Finals at age 22 because that was only his 2nd year coming off a broken foot where he missed almost the full season. and LeBron was in his 4th year in an incredibly weak Eastern Conference. Much different circumstances.
The 2007 Cavs are the only team since the 1987 Lakers to beat two 0.500 or worse teams to make the Finals. For comparison, Jordan only faced two 0.500 or worse teams in his *entire playoff career* yet the 2007 Cavs matched that in one playoff run alone.
Then they beat a watered down Pistons team that was not close to the 2004 and 2005 teams that made the Finals under Larry Brown. The 2007 Pistons had no 4x DPOY Ben Wallace who left, and they had the 1-seed with only a 53-29 record.
That is the 3rd-worst record for a 1-seed in the 4-round format after the 2002 Nets and 2003 Pistons. If every team in the conference is weak, of course a weak supporting cast, like the 2007 Cavs, will make the Finals by default. It was a significantly easier and less impressive accomplishment to make the Finals in 2007 under such easy circumstances.
Jordan never had the luxury of playing in that weak of a conference, so of course he wouldn't make the Finals earlier in his career since he was under much tougher circumstances. In the 1989 Playoffs alone, Jordan beat two 50+ win teams before losing to the 63-19 Pistons. In Lebron's entire first run in Cleveland from 2003-2010 he beat only one 50+ win team, the 2007 Pistons without 4x DPOY Ben Wallace, who likely would not even reach 50 wins if they played in a legit conference.
Lastly, the 2007 Cavs are not the worst supporting cast to make the Finals since the 2001 Sixers. The 2002 and 2003 Nets had worse supporting casts than both Iverson's Sixers and LeBron's 2007 Cavs. The 2003 Nets are the last team to make the Finals with a record under 50 wins (49-33).
Richard Jefferson and Kenyon Martin, the 2 best teammates that Kidd had on those Finals teams, never averaged 10 ppg or 13 ppg respectively in a playoff series without Kidd's passing. So whenever they played well with the Nets, it was only because Jason Kidd's passing made them play well in the first place.
The Nets also had much worse defensive help than the 2007 Cavs, as they were a top 10 worst defense in 2001 before Kidd joined them. Their rebounding was so bad that Kidd had to lead them in rebounding for the 2002 Playoffs as a PG. Magic is the only other PG to do that on a Finals team and he is 6-9.
However, like the 2007 Cavs, the 2002 and 2003 Nets only made the Finals because they also benefited from a weak Eastern Conference. The 2002 Nets (52-26) and 2003 Pistons (50-32) have the two worst record for a 1-seed in the 4-round format with the 2007 Pistons (53-29) being the third-worst.
