Subtle Flaw - Big Problem in this Australian Opal!

- This 65.7-carat chunk of seam opal hails from the old Zorba field in Coober Pedy, South Australia. This dazzling stone boasts a spectacular array of bright yellow-green and blue hues. Our goal is to transform this impressive piece into a cabochon, but as I examine the stone, I note a finding that teaches an important opal lesson: a wedge-shaped defect on the edge nearly always indicates an underlying crack in the opal.
Wedge defects are found with similar properties to opal, like flint, chert and chalcedony. In this opal, a crack was present, but a careful approach minimized loss. T
Just wanted to say you are probably my favorite youtuber. I enjoy the ramblings and your kitties.
Nothing quite like a video from pulitzer opal. Hands down the best opal content online. Looking forward to the next one already
Agree 100%
Hands up, paws down. Dinner will presume after we gather to watch on the big screen
I found a new way to get videos done more quickly, Gary. Basically it involves not procrastinating! I may be able to do them more often, but I probably won't (unless I have to!)
Shows how much risk there is in opals. Still cut some pretty stones. Love that you cut material I don't see much on other channels. Thanks!
Man on a mission…. I appreciate the way you stayed focussed on that Honduran opal like Sheila driving past a department store display window. 🇦🇺
I didn't tell the whole story, adz! I was cutting it and for some reason, I could not get the shape right. It turned out that there was one of those soft areas right in the middle. (I thought that I was losing it .... but that's not possible, right?)
@@PulitzerOpal not possible at all mate.
Blame any inconstancy’s in judgement on Sheila.
Your videos are a wonderful surprise that always makes the day better , have you ever played with spencer Idaho opal? Really thin color bars but makes some beautiful stones
Always a pleasure to watch your videos and i really enjoy the extra footage of paco ❤...no sheila this time i hope she's well !
I know you’re a professional, highly skilled cutter when the ones you’re disappointed in would end up in the top 5 of my best ever. Loved the video, already looking forward to the next!
I've gotten to the point where nothing surprises me anymore in this channel! (In a good way lol) but that horse video/meme caught me off guard 😂
Hey Pulitzer, loved the video. I was wondering if you can shed some light onto the harness of opal. I have always heard that Brazilian and Mintabie material is the hardest, but how much harder is it really? I know opal ranges from 5.5-6.5 but was wondering which localities fall the high and low ends of that range.
I love watching your videos because you take the time to tell us about the different opals, the way they are formed, their flaws, etc. Thank you so much for taking the time to do that. I would love to give Hizz a home!
Thanks for the upload. I always love your animal videos mixed in with the opal cutting. Wish you and the family my best!
Always a happy day when I see a new Pulitzer opal video. Pity about that Honduran opal , but love the others. Thanks Colonel, I look forward to your next escapades in opal.
Agree! Do you remember what the title is of the knife video?
Always enjoy your videos and humor. Your talents are fair too. Thanks for the laughs and lesson. Keep Smiling and Stay Grateful
Great video. I didn't know that the wedge was always an indication of there being a crack in the stone. Thank you for that information!
Another great bunch of stones and a fun monologue. Keep having fun!! See y'a next time.
Too bad about the Honduran opal. It really looked promising. Great video and educational as always!
The Godfather of Opals what a great video . Love the crack lesson and did not know about Opal from Honduras . Thank you
I like watching how lightning fast you get them stones cut and polished too!! Almost like a film sped up real fast.🤭 incredible!!
Super fun video as always
I would be thrilled to adopt any of these orphans in need of a loving home!! I have the ability to shape and polish, and create a lovely piece of jewelry that I would wear and treasure, or give to a grandchild, who would also treasure it. Two of my grandchildren even have opal as their birthstone!
The foal is adorable. I am happy to hear that they only got a bruise. Growing up can be rough.
The Honduran opal is amazing looking stuff. I had never heard of it. Thanks so much for showing us. I'm glad the foal is OK. The crash looked horrific. Thanks you again for all the videos, information and humour. Always brightens my day.
I came for he opal and was rewarded with a gaggle of awesome cats! I am a horse person and think Opal would be a fantastic name for a really cool colored horse. My own horse is a black bay....I bought him already registered with the name Zephyr. Still continuing my arrowhead journey. As a final thought, Hizz reminded me of mother of pearl....gorgeous!
I love all the different types of opal that get exposure on your channel
Fantastic advice and great opals, punctuated by ferocious and adorable cats.
My kind of video! 💖
Glad that you liked it.
I always love your sarcastic sense of humor. Thank you for another entertaining video. I love all of the final stones. Hizz might not have as much color, but I think she's absolutely gorgeous. I think that a layer of resin would definitely be the way to go with Hondo.
I would happily give Hizz a new home especially if she is letting the side down at your house. Your expertise in the realm of opals is, as always, appreciated and I love the feeling of knowing your intuition is correct, there was absolutely a crack.
Great video again, I’m impressed that you give away opals. Sweet!
Learned something again from your video, whilst being entertaining too. Thanks for making the video!
Hubby and I both get excited when we see that Pulitzer has a new video out. The way you mix beautiful Opals and purdy cats is simply a thing of Beauty!!!!
Keep up the great work... And just an fyi I have a beautiful place all set up for Hizz to come and stay if they need a place. Just saying!
I to have a cat but he's feral mostly he likes me enough that he let's me feed him tuna and dry food and pull the ticks he gets. He very rarely loses a fight and he will let me heal him up. I took him to the vet once (big mistake) to get fixed they said he would become a house cat...right. He has fiv and is not doing so good with his breathing and his little nose and eyes water. It breaks my heart to see this. They tell me there is nothing I can do but just love him. Not sure why I'm sharing this but I see your videos and how much you love your cats and was sure you could relate. Love the passion you have for your craft and really appreciate the videos you share with the cat friends you live with. Thank you.
Cool cat channel.
Nice opals too!
Great show & beautiful stones do love me some Pulitzer Opal... Have a great week & keep pumping the vids out :)
It felt like a flashback. Thanks for the video.
I like opal a lot.
ty for all the opal videos. I have learned sooo much from you and Shelia.
Right on love those opals.
Congrats on being #1! You win a ..... gold star!
@@PulitzerOpal I’m a lucky man
BIG congrats to the winners. Another great video. Keep'em coming!!!
I very much enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thanks for explaining how you find and work around opal cracks. Also, for telling us about Honduran basaltic opal.
Of course, the kitties are always fun to watch. Their antics distract me enough that I lose focus on the opal cutting and have to rewind. And that foal - holy moly! I would panic attack if my horse baby went through a fence.
Bringing us all the opal, wether they're spectacular or not! That's the way it goes. You can't tell till the end. I enjoy it all!
Great video, Pulitzer. Fun and entertaining even if the opals don't meet expectations!
That Seam Opal looks so similar to Crystal and Jelly opal. Quite interesting there are so many varieties! 🎉
Seam opal is just the way it comes, and has nothing to do with the type of opal. Seam opal comes in relatively thin pieces that are flat on the top and bottom. Most of the Australian opal that I deal with comes as seams, including jelly opal, crystal opal, etc.
I am thoroughly amused with your content. Subscribed and ready for more! ❤
Keep learning new things from you. Thanks for the great vid.
Cracking video!
All a Tizz about the Hizz, fantastic looking stone, great work.
I do look forward to seeing a new video from you! Congratulations to all the winners!
I loved Hondo! He deserves a coating of epoxy - not like he's so valuable that it will diminish him any. Thanks for the great opal lessons. I learn so much!
Excellent information on the v crack thanks!
Glad it was helpful, KM. But you don't cut opal, right?
@@PulitzerOpal I don’t, I stalk the auction site and window shop what I would and wouldn’t buy. Mostly based on what you’ve taught me. Maybe one day I will have expendable cash to get one or will come across a massive bargain. Until then I can play pretend.
OMG - besides opals I really love horses - and the little one's "adventure" seemed to be rather dangerous! 😢 Glad you assured us he is still fine! ❤
Such a pity with the Honduran opal - I absolutely love black background! 🥰
Learn something new every video. Thank you!
It seems that I don't get any of your channel notifications on time. But all is not lost. I love watching all the kitties, the orange ones just have a oddly personality, Just like me 😂
We love your Videos on Opal! Thanks for sharing your Knowledge to the World!!!!!
Thanks for another awesome adventure in opal 🙏🙏🙏
Another great video to brighten my day. Thank you.
Great episode, Don. A shame about the Honduran but it was nice to learn about it.
Gratz to all the winners and good luck to everyone in this round!
Interesting point about the wedge defects, it's cool to hear experience you've gathered from knapping
Love your videos! Always fascinating facts and interesting opals. ❤
Wonderful opals, Mr. P 👋💎👍! I love the cute cats you have as well as that little firey courageous foal ( maybe he or she will be a good jumper one day too ), your friend have! Greetings to you dear Mr. P with family and pets from me in Sweden 🇸🇪😊❤️!
Thanks, Susanne! I don't know very much about horses. That was probably the first time it ever tried to jump, an only did because there was a fence in the way! My friend has very good horses, so I expect it to grow up into a fine animal. I have never been to Sweden ... but I have been to Denmark and Iceland. It gets really cold in Sweden, I think ... compared to Denmark, Norway and Iceland .... I think.
@PulitzerOpal In Sweden winters can be cold, especially in the northern parts! I live in the most southern county of Sweden called Skåne or Scania. The town I live in is built by the strait of Öresund ( the strait who divides Sweden from Denmark ), and I can see Copenhagen from my windows. Today, it's warm day here, and we will have temperatures around or slightly above 30 degrees Celsius. In winter, we can get if it's a cold winter -15 degrees, but usually we have - 2 to -3 degrees cold up to around +5 normally. We have a more humid climate than the northern parts of Sweden have, too. It's a sweatty day here🌡🌞😰😓! Take care 👋♥️👍
Love to see your vidéos from France , love you and your cat
Horse zoomies are usually more dangerous to the horses than the home. Glad the foal was ok! Cat zoomies are usually more dangerous to my home. 😂 I loved the Honduran opal, but sad that is kind of loses its luster when dry. Thank you again for all the incredible information and adorable fuzzy things!
Love the videos!!!! Not to mention all the knowledge bombs you drop- thanks as always! And winning an opal sure would make my bike accident hernia feel better! ❤😂❤😂❤❤❤❤❤❤
You deserve an opal, for sure. Maybe an unclaimed giveaway?
Wait hold on really?!?!? That would be amazing!!! All of your stuff is spectacular!!!! ❤❤❤
Always the best vids, informative and entertaining!
Another great vid - and good results I figured. Thank You!
If you put a clear coat paint on the Honduran Opal would it help it hold some color? Can you do that with stones , kind of like clear coating wood to bring out the grain?
Always happy to see you post! I just knew that Honduran was going to be special. Oh well. Still learned something new. All the best!❤
haha, your wife trying to divide a churu between all 4 cats 😂 i know what that's like. they're so greedy and cute 😻
Hondo opal looked promising, sadly it didn’t look so lovely at the end. Another entertaining and educational video. As always, thanks for sharing 😊
Glad you enjoyed it, n
Can you imagine the feeling of finding a seam of fire green opal in the wall. My god!
Such a bummer about that Honduran opal .... it looks so pretty when wet but not so great after it dries out. Thanks again for sharing!
Hey can I ask woud u sell me some opals so I can make cutting board with epoxy resin and will ship it to u back?
I'm not sure what you .... explain
Oh, right ... like a mini table? Maybe I can do it... pulitzeropal@gmail.com - explain
Thanks for the content and helpful knowledge!!!! Always keeping a eye out for your vids, I'm new too all of this so I'm always looking to learn :D
Excellent content with my great coffee.
Beautiful opal...
Best opal info on the internet! Love the content!
So would coating Hondo in a thin layer of resin work? Because it is absolutely beautiful when wet, like a night sky with multi colored stars! The others are beautiful also, I don't think there is a stone I have seen you work on that I have not loved or wished for!
I actually put on about 5 coats of a thin cyanoacrylate (super glue). If you watch the part where Hondo fell out of my hands you will see that the back is very shiny. That’s the superglue which built up under Hondo (gravity). The real problem is that because of the porous part, I could not get an even surface, so even with coating, Hondo may still look funny. I will probably try a thick epoxy coating for Hondo in the next video.
YAY!!! A new video from the MAN...and Sheila too.. 😂😂
Would love to know if you've tried your hand at cutting other stones or if you stuck with opal (Understandable) :)
I wish I could win anything from you. I love your videos. Watching you work with each piece is so fascinating. The cats are so cute. That little horse is adorable, but hopefully doesn't have any more fence incidents 😅. Love from Alberta Canada 🥰🖖.
Great video and hugely intuitive. Thank
Poor Hondo. Hizz is very nice, though. I like that one! Good work, sir!
Dying to get back to cutting again, moving house and cant set up the work area for a while yet.
Another cool video, you always seem to pull out something I havent seen yet.
As always another quality video from the opal king!
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND HARD WORK OG OPAL
This will get easier ... right? RIGHT?
@@PulitzerOpal MAYBE .MAYBE NOT
You never cease to amaze me with such beautiful opals. I believe God created opals just for his good pleasure. I believe opals are the colors of what Heaven looks like. Thanks for sharing Your kitties, the foal over the fence (poor baby!) and some opal I have never seen before. You Rock.
They are all pretty stones in my eyes. Nice one Don.
I’ve been away on family business, & yet to respond in email to our last chat.
I’ll explain more in the email.
Congratulations to the lucky winners, who are no doubt also grinners. 😊
Great opals and cute animals!
Very good video. I had no knowledge about Honduran opal, I guess it is for specimen collection only. Thanks for the vid and have a great day.
Hopefully one day you will find an Opal that wants to move to the uk. A spend its day living with me lol. Great video thx
Nice job, that hondo opal is weird stuff. I think you did a good job on the seem opal, look like a nice stone to me. Thanks for sharing, hope your grand child is doing well.
It must be so disappointing when you have what you believe is a quality piece & it doesn't polish to expectation.
I may not be an expert on all things opal, but I believe that no matter how bad it may turn out, there's always someone who will admire the colors that appear, even if it's got podge or sand inclusions!
Great stuff, as always, Mr. P!
I love that shield shaped opal, it sure is a beauty & it's no wonder you have that as your profile pic!
Hi, Trish. I DID expect better out of the Honduran opal, but upon reflection, I should not have. I may coat it with epoxy just to see what might have happened. The other one ... the yellow/green one was not the highest grade opal, but it came out okay. The Rainbow Shield is in the pendant that I gave my wife for our daughter's wedding. She is our only daughter ... but I still have 3 boys who are not yet married! That pendant is very fine - opal and diamonds ... what do you expect? That opal now costs $60K USD per ounce (so the piece that I bought would be $20K today ... I paid $5K). Inflation is constant in the opal market ... even when everything else is cheap!
@PulitzerOpal I'm not surprised at it's worth, Mrs P is a very lucky lady indeed to have a husband with an exceptional talent of eeking the best out of rough opals!
It feels like a year since your last video. I’m in need of more patience because it’s always worth the wait.
Man 3 day late , youtube notification sux lol I always learn so much on these videos Thanks.
Sometimes it do be like that. I still really love that leopard patterned opal from the last video, its so spotty!
Keep up the great work Colonel! ❤
So many cats, and not one called 'Opal'. Though I have vague recollections of one called 'Potch'. Of course, I may be misremembering. Great vid., Colonel.
Great vid, thanks for sharing the craft
Really like your way to cut them into unusual shapes!
Thank you! Cheers!
I love the way the Honduran opal looked wet. That one is worth coating in resin.
Thank you for introducing me to two opals that i knew nothing about, the leopard and Honduran. I had never heard of either before. Now I'm looking for some. You're a bad influence on my opal addiction. 😅
I show opal and then people get addicted and spend their life savings and end up divorced and homeless. How do you think I feel?
@@PulitzerOpal you're secretly laughing inside. 😃
Hizz loves beautiful to me! She would be right at home with my 2 cats Rocky and Tuktuk. Love the videos of your cats and the Opals of course.
Hello Mr. Opal! I have two cats right now, how many more cats do I need before I can work with opal? Many thanks, ryzeking33
Your opals are neat! Keep it up!
