  • My first time watching Guardians of the Galaxy and you guys were right. I didn't need any previous information before seeing this movie and now that i think about it, it is a smart move on Disney since it ensures that anybody out there who's just curious can enjoy this film. Amazing visuals, interesting story, funny and memorable characters (rocket was the funniest one, let's be real). I'm glad i reacted to this and if you're reading this please tag along so you don't miss Volume 2 ;)

Hey guys! It's me :D haha. Just wanted to let you know that i made captions for this video. They're more accurate than the ones RUclips generates automatically and i know a lot of people rely on them while they're watching content. I don't know if this makes a big difference or not so, if you're a "caption user" please let me know and i'll try to do it more frequently in the future. Sometimes RUclips's captions suck, man. Oh and both, the movie and my comments have been transcripted so there's that :D Hope this is useful! Enjoy the video, guys.

They auditioned dozens of actors for Groot, and none could give the emotion and nuance to repeating the same line over and over that James Gunn (the director) wanted. Then, Vin Diesel auditioned; it was the first thing he had been able to bring himself to read for since Paul Walker died, he used it to grieve and process.

While it's true that you can watch the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies without watching any of the rest of the MCU, there are parts of this movie which are important to understanding what's going on in later parts of the MCU. So it's fine to watch these early, but if you are going to watch the MCU from the beginning at some point, when you get to where these movies would normally be next you might want to watch at least this one again just to remind yourself of what's in it. (The second one is mostly important to later MCU movies only to the extent that the Guardians of the Galaxy show up in some of them, and it's good to know what's happened to them before that.)

The Collector [Benicio Del Toro's character] is in fact immortal and slightly younger than the age of the universe, he's called The Collector because that's basically all he's done across all space and time (hence the museum) - this means that if you have something that is of interest to him, it is of universal importance, very literally. Also, if you enjoyed Zoe Saldaña in this sci-fi role, she's also in the Star Trek series. And the Avatar series. And the Suicide Squad series. And the Adam Project series. etc. et al. ad inf., true sci-fi royalty. 🍿❤

    My viewing list for MCU
    • Ironman 1 (the OG but you can start with Avengers if you want)
    • Captain America: First Avenger (Cap's origin story is really good but you can start with Avengers if you want)
    • *Avengers 1* (must watch; it's cool if you've seen the origin movies first but it's designed to stand well enough on its own)
    • *Captain America: Winter Soldier* (must watch)
    • Avengers 2 (not the best but future plots rely heavily on it)
    • *Captain America: Civil War* (must watch)
    • *Guardians... Vol. 2* (must watch)
    Then the big one,
    • *Avengers: Infinity War* (the best of the whole series + it's where the Guardians become important to the main plot)
    Then go directly to
    • *Avengers: Endgame* the part 2 to Infinity War.
    Then finally,
    • *Guardians... Vol. 3* (must watch)
Honorable mentions: Thor Ragnarok leads directly into Infinity War, but it's really not that good IMO (unpopular opinion)
"Captain Marvel" IS NOT necessary viewing for between Infinity War and Endgame; they said that for the marketing and it's a lie.
"Ant-man" and "Ant-man and The Wasp" are way more important to the plot of Endgame BY FAR, and even then, you can skip them, Endgame includes all the context you need by itself if you watch the ones I've listed.
I like Spiderman: Homecoming and Spiderman: No Way Home a lot but they're not for everyone. Homecoming is very chill and small-scale with a different take on Spiderman as a character, and No Way Home is a clusterfuck monstrosity that I only adore because of how it does commentary on Spiderman movies that aren't even in the MCU that won't make sense if you didn't grow up with the character.
Also, Thor 1 is the only good Thor movie.

Hey, Amanda! Although a highly popular series, this is actually a poor adaptation of the source material which reduces the scope and grandeur of Marvel Cosmic to juvenile silliness. There were two iterations of the team that are far superior to their film counterparts. The 1990s Jim Valentino Guardians were each the sole survivor of their respective homeworlds in an alternate 31st-century who united under the leadership of a time-displaced 20th-century character serving the same function for the team that Captain America did for the Avengers. They fought against the Badoon who had conquered the solar system. Yondu, a Centaurian, was actually from that team who used a bow to fire his yaka arrows whereas Michael Rooker whistles to direct his sound-sensitive yaka arrow. This alteration is actually clever.
The film characters are based on the 2000s Dan Abnett-Andy Lanning iteration of the team who were down-on-their-luck misfits brought together against the Annihilation Wave, a terrifying insectoid horde led by Annihilus, a staple Marvel space villain. Peter Quill is supposed to be world-weary drifter who has seen too much to care about anything but Chris Pratt plays him like a frat-boy goofball. Gamora is fiercely portrayed by Zoe Saldana but is never given a proper showcase to confirm her as the 'deadliest woman in the galaxy'. Dave Bautista does impressively mine comedy gold by blending two versions of Drax the Destroyer threading the needle between his 1970s dense persona and his 2000s formidable persona. He is a standout. Bradley Cooper does nail Rocket Raccoon as a resourceful, smart-mouthed brawler with a mean streak. The enigmatic Groot is adapted accurately and happens to be the only character actually created by Stan Lee. He is needlessly voiced by Vin Diesel who should have played Ronan the Accuser instead. Lee Pace, a fine actor, is reduced to portraying the complex and noble Kree adjudicator as a one-dimensional maniacal zealot bent on genocide which was a waste of both the character and actor. Karen Gillan plays the space pirate Nebula who claims Thanos as a grandfather in the comics whereas she is reframed as his second adoptive daughter in the movie. Thanos makes his first major appearance played well by Josh Brolin after being hinted at in "Avengers" and Benicio del Toro is sheer genius as Taneleer Tivan, the Collector.
The Nova Corps space police, the Kyln prison, the severed Celestial head known as Knowhere Station, Cosmo the canine cosmonaut and Howard the Duck are all from the comics.
If they had adapted the comics faithfully, audiences would have been treated to an incredible space opera with very real stakes rather than a cartoonish comedy which is a real shame. I encourage you to read the source material if you truly want some excellent storytelling with these characters. Only people who never read the comics thought these movies were amazing because they had no frame of reference. Everyone in the know realized what a missed opportunity this was.
You do realize, Amanda, that this is a key chapter in a 22-film saga. You are missing out on one of cinema's greatest achievements by seeing only a portion of the whole story out of order. Why would you elect to rob yourself of experiencing one of the greatest epics ever put on film? I don't understand why anyone would willingly choose to deprive themselves of such a rewarding journey. If you just see "Guardians" movies, you're not going to understand all the developments if you skip the rest of the saga because they're all interconnected. That is the whole point of the enterprise!
The next chronological stop in the MCU are three "I Am Groot" animated shorts: "Groot's First Steps", "The Little Guy", "Groot Takes a Bath".
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" occurs just months later and can be seen next chronologically after the animated shorts.
Just so you are aware, Marvel Universe co-creator Stan Lee appears in a cameo in most Marvel movies. He and Jack Kirby co-created this interconnected universe and its characters in 1961. In "Guardians of the Galaxy", he's the elderly lothario Rocket spies hitting on a young woman while he's scanning for bounties on Xandar.
    PHASE 1: (Hulk (2003))-->Iron Man-->Iron Man 2-->Incredible Hulk-->Thor-->Captain America: The First Avenger-->Avengers
PHASE 2: Iron Man 3-->Thor: The Dark World-->Captain America: The Winter Soldier-->GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY-->GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2-->Avengers: Age of Ultron-->Ant-Man
    PHASE 3: Captain America: Civil War-->Black Widow-->Black Panther-->Spider-Man: Homecoming-->(Venom)-->Doctor Strange-->Thor: Ragnarok-->Ant-Man and the Wasp-->AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR-->Captain Marvel-->AVENGERS: ENDGAME
Hulk (2003) is proto-MCU, the first excellent but commercially unsuccessful attempt
Venom is MCU-adjacent and necessary because the sequel partially occurs in the MCU
The end-credits for "Ant-Man and the Wasp" should be seen AFTER "Infinity War".
The end-credit for "Black Widow" should be seen AFTER "Endgame".
"Black Widow" is Phase 4 but occurs chronologically where it's placed.

I deeply appreciate the comic lore you provided here.
Kinda lost me with the claim that the MCU is a deep masterpiece that needs to be watched in order, though. There's some excellent work in this series but more than half of it doesn't pull its weight, lol

The perfect blend of humour, heart, and music are the only reasons these movies work. This movie would NOT have worked without even just 1 of these 3 components. What you miss is that between the humour there is an unbelievable amount of heart, and themes of family run through the DNA of the entire trilogy, humour is not the enemy. It can be done well, and it can be done poorly. James Gunn was BORN to make these movies. That is just the reality. It is the most praised trilogy in the entire MCU for a very good reason, only James Gunn makes you feel this way. Nobody else would have it any other way, only you. The perfect trilogy. There was no missed opportunity, any description of these movies as just "cartoonish comedies" misses the entire point.

I didn't read much of your treatise here, but have to disagree with your characterization of this as "juvenile silliness." While I _do_ consider many modern comedies juvenile and therefore not to my taste -- such as Adam Sandler films and the American Pie franchise -- Guardians of the Galaxy does not stoop to the crass biological and raunchy humor that are central to juvenile comedy.

While perhaps not high art but populist entertainment, it is populist entertainment of extremely high quality that successfully adapted a comic universe and achieved an interconnected narrative across multiple cinematic franchises and studios that culminated in a pair of the most popular blockbusters of all time. Regardless of whether you consider much of it low-brow material, it is a landmark series in the history of film accomplishing what only the Universal horror cycle did in the 1940s but on a much more massive scale. While not every single chapter is necessary, seeing the films in sequence is precisely how they were designed. If one were to jump in at the very end, the impact would be significantly diluted and the narrative would be quite confusing. The finale is not meant to stand alone and most chapters are built on the shoulders of their predecessors.@@samwallaceart288

I don't know. There's talk of a-holes, b-holes, male organs and turds. Peter acts like a frat-boy. The Ravagers are sniggering morons. Everyone uses Earth vernacular. Everyone comes off as pretty silly. If they had adapted the comics faithfully, audiences would have been treated to an incredible space opera with very real stakes rather than a cartoonish comedy which is a real shame.
