This album dropped the same week as 9/11. I just found that out about a month ago and it made me realize that’s why I have always made a subconscious connection between SOAD and that event. I remember the fear of continued terrorist attacks, the possibility of friends getting drafted, and overall feelings of being scared and insecure. That was also only 2 years after Columbine so the line “How do you own disorder” really resonated and I am instantly transported back to that time when this song comes on. Wild.
I was 18 years old when 9/11 happened. And I went and bought this CD the day it came out. Jet Pilot caught my attention right away…”wide were the eyes of a horse on a jet pilot. One that smiled as he flew over the bay” was haunting to listen to after that. Crazy $hit!
If you count SOAD and Slipknot as Nu Metal (I think they are more Alternative or Progressive Metal) then they are absolutely on Mt Rushmore along with Lincoln Park, Deftones, Limp Bizkit and Korn. Next SOAD songs to check out are BYOB/Sugar/Prison Song/Forest for harder more political songs and Aerials/Question/Streamline/Holy Mountains for the most beautiful and emotional songs. But there is so many more dude of all types every SOAD song is an experience.
Big 4 of Nu metal is tough there are so many bands who made the genre what it was and if had to name an unbiased big 4 it would be Korn, Disturbed, Limp Bizkit, and Linkin Park. There were bands that transcended the genre and some who never were not in the genre but helped build it like; System of a down, rage against the machine, Slipknot, and most of the big grunge bands were influence in the making of nu metal.
