The Eurovision Song Contest of 1972 was held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom. 18 countries participated in this year's contest and in this video I share my thoughts on every single one, ranking them from the one I enjoyed the least to the one I enjoyed the most.
List of participants from 1972:
AUSTRIA | The Milestones - Falter im Wind
BELGIUM | Serge and Christine Ghisoland - À folie ou pas du tout
FINLAND | Päivä Paunu and Kim Floor - Muistathan

NETHERLANDS | Sandra and Andres - Als het om de liefde gaat
NORWAY | Grethe Kausland and Benny Borg - Småting
PORTUGAL | Carlos Mendes - A festa da vida

SWEDEN | The Family Four - Härliga sommardag
SWITZERLAND | Véronique Müller - C'est la chanson de mon amour
UNITED KINGDOM | The New Seekers - Beg, Steal or Borrow
YUGOSLAVIA | Tereza - Muzika i ti
Safe to say Portuguese songs that starts with A festa are likely to be masterpieces 😊
That year has one of my clearest Run away Winners. And its ofc. Portugal.
One of the most engaging, mesmerizing and atmospheric Songs ever. And by no Doubts by far their best entry.
Such a lovely top list. My own favourite from 1972 probably is the United Kingdom, that song's so darn catchy. But there are quite a few gems in 1972, among them Portugal and Italy. Thanks for yet another great youtube video 🎉
Wonderful, intricate knowledge displayed as always Groot! 👏🏻 Although I personally don't agree on Netherlands and UK being so high, I respect your views. I'm glad to see Spain up there with Finland, Portugal and Luxembourg though!
Hey Groot!! Great video as always, but i hope you make the time between the songs like 5-10 seconds longer so i dont need to pause the video to read your comments.
Thank you for pointing it out!
I set the time of each clip to try and avoid any issues with copyright, but it seems like the older contests are more lenient with this. I'll test out making them slightly longer for the next one, but I unfortunately can't guarantee that it will work!
The party of life 🎉
Great ranking! I love a lot of the contests from the 70's but always find this one hard to watch because of all the awkward duets! 😄 There are quite a few charming entries here though.
I really love the late 60's vibe of the Swiss, UK, and Austrian entries this year, but my top two are probably Luxembourg and Portugal!
Here are my personal votes/rankings, i'am from the Netherlands (Rotterdam city)
12 points: United Kingdom - The New Seekers - Beg, steal or borrow
10 points: Spain - Jaime Morey - Amanece
8 points: Luxembourg - Vicky Leandros - Après toi
7 points: Germany - Mary Roos - Nur die liebe lässt uns leben
6 points: Yugoslavia - Tereza Kesovija - Muzika i ti
5 points: Austria - Milestones - Falter im wind
4 points: Portugal - Carlos Mendes - A festa da vida
3 points: Sweden - Family Four - Härliga sommardag
2 points: Monaco - Anne Marie Godart & Peter Maclane - Comme on s'aime
1 point : Ireland - Sandie Jones - Ceol an Ghrá
This is one of the years that falls a little bit off the radar for me, but we agree on the last place and the first place. The Belgian song is just offputting for me, another channel said the lady of that duet looked like a hostage, and I had to agree. And now, on the other side, Carlos Mendes just returned and performed one of my all time favorites! Portugal was seriously underrated. My top 5 is:
5. Italy
4. Netherlands
3. Germany
2. Austria
1. Portugal
Take care, min kära!
Many great songs in 1972 but my winner is still Luxemburg ❤❤❤
My Top 5: Germany, U.K., Italy, LUxembourg, PORTUGAL.
I remember nothing about this year, oh wait, I actually remember Norway's shower curtain dress. And also my winner Portugal, how could I forget A Festa Da Vida, overall the year is kind of weak, would you agree? Also as always good job, very nice read. I appreciate the effort you put into these videos.
I'd probably agree on that... I did enjoy watching it back, but there are a few too many songs I consider to be quite poor.
This ranking confirms the Groot bias for a male vocal. Granted Italy and Portugal are amongst the better songs, but can either really match the profoundness of 'Apres toi'?
I hope you took time to read the comments, Alipan ;)
Vocals rarely influence my rankings too much, yet in this case, Vicky gives us one of the all-time performances in that regard. However, the song has unfortunately never been one I've cared for too much.
Also, a slight spoiler, but I suggest you hold back your male bias comments for the next few ranking videos!
@@groot1421 I always read all of your comments carefully. Indeed I even discovered a word I had never seen before "Passaggio". However, the alround impact of VL's song is what I have always loved about it. The vocal cannot win a contest on its own., and I reckon it won because the two coalesce. - BTW - my flagging up of your male singer bias is not only based on 1972 but in general though the years. We are all allowed our bias but it is relevent when approaching your highly instructive and jolly reviews. 😁
@@alipanroosendaal9503 Give me a few more videos to see if I can balance those numbers out ;)
I think the 60s is the main time period where I have a lot of male-sung favourites
This rating proves no such thing.
@@paulmartin1532 I did not say that it "proves", I said it "confirms". This is based on the whole set of rankings from 1956 up to and including 1972. If you then read our Grooty's comment carefully you will see that he tacitly acknowledges this. - Can I suggest that next time you feel the urge to respond to a comment that you first read the original comment carefully and all subsequent responses before adding your thoughts. That way you can avoid making a fool of yourself a 2nd time.
Same winner and last place
