I think they just try to hustle a little harder than they should. They agree to projects with deadlines they can't really make and because of that the project suffers and it comes back to bite them. Prefect example is Fallout: New Vegas. Everybody talks about the position they were in making that game but you have to remember that they agreed to it. That's partly on them.

      3. Show hate and despite to Chorus and Disfavored both (optional).

I think it’s a minor miracle Obsidian have survived as long as they have and lately it seems like they’ve been on a bit of a heater in terms of releasing well received games.
Personally I think a decent number of their problems come down to them being a really great AA devloper that gets miscast as a AAA developer. They can make a game with the best of them, but their stuff will always be a little more niche it seems.

They've obviously gotten better and better at the technical and financial stuff as time goes on, but they've never neglected the writing, which means that while their launches may have not been financial juggernauts, their games all have legs (meaning that their games reputations improve over time and remain relevant much longer than games from other studios)

If that's to mean Josh Sawyer's postmortem about Deadfire ship combat, I'd say management was right. An exploration-based Age of Sail game without ship combat is like making a game about the Eastern Front of WW2 and not including tanks. If the ship combat didn't work, then that was a game breaker. Not just a "remove it and pretend we can ignore it" issue. And Sid Meier's Pirates! Had made fun, simple ship combat a decade before.
Same thing with people who are saying Rogue Trader doesn't need ship combat, that it's a side system. It absolutely isn't in a game based on exploration in dangerous places. Unless you have a narrative get out of jail card like the Normandy stealth drive. Which doesn't exist in 40k. I echo Your sentiment, it is one of THE BEST modern cRPGs You can play, personally gave me the closest vibes to Baldur 2 compared to anything else, really enjoyed the characters and their fantastic voiceovers, the world with it's serious and believable problems (faction choice, the pantheon and the concept of watchers), and the actual gameplay which for me hit the perfect balance between complexity (so desired in RPGs) and meaningful choices (WOTR comes to mind where imo You could slash half of it's spells/skills/talents and the game would still be kind of the same...NOTE - I do enjoy WOTR and is more or less of similar quality, just a comparative example). Here is my overall take on Obsidian: they make interesting stuff. Their games have unique identity and provide one of a kind experience. The exception was Outer Worlds that felt…. Safe, imitative, predictable. It wasn’t bad, just not as fuelled by creativity as their previous titles.
They made some flawed game, but there is no one else I can turn to for an Obsidian experience. And while I found some of their titles frustratingly flawed, I never found my time spend with their games as wasted.

I feel like this is the proper comment section to ask: I want to get into CRPGs but don't know where to start. What is the best CRPG (I don't care how old or new it is) to play to stair-step me into the genre? If the combat is too complicated, it might scare me away. The closest thing I've played is Dragon Age: Origins but am fully aware that is not a true-CRPG on most difficulties. HIT ME WITH SUGGESTIONS!

My gut tells me Divinity Original Sin 2 on the easiest setting, (since difficulty could put you off forever) & just enjoy the ride. Larian studios basically made DOS as a proof of concept that they could handle Baldurs Gate 3, & it is lovingly crafted. It also allows for the use of physics as part of the combat mechanics. It is entirely voice acted with amazing talent and the world building is exceptional.

Really rough start with them, with the time restraints and all. But now it seems they're finally getting some leeway to develop their own stuff at their own pace so to speak. If their earlier track record of managing to dish out 2 exceptional character and story rich games in record speed it seems like then what they can do now at their own pace could be something else. I get that they probably don't have many of the people still there that were there back in the day but still what they've always managed to do is they always put story and characters in first place. Which is a solid foundation for any project. So that in mind I'm looking forward to what they're doing atm.

Obsidian is my favorite developer, I have always enjoyed the things they have put out...even Pathfinder Adventures on my phone, I have always loved their products even if they weren't polished. Fallout New Vegas is my favorite post Interplay Fallout game to this day. With the amount of talent they have garnered from that history you pointed out, Troika, Interplay and Black Isle, they haven't really disappointed me yet. I eagerly await Avowed and Outer Worlds 2 because of how much I loved Pillars of Eternity and the Outer Worlds...I still consider the Outer Worlds as the spiritual sequel to Fallout because it feels like Fallout 1 and 2 unlike anything that Bethesda alone has put out.

Ah yes. One of my favorite RPG studios, especially during those early years from KOTOR 2 to New Vegas. Despite their imperfections, those games had me hooked! These days, however, Owlcat basically fills that particular spot, since the last Obs game I've played is Deadfire. Which I still liked a lot, but Owlcat's games have simply scratched that particular itch for me for the last few years.
It bums me out to this day that Deadfire didn't perform and that that particular cliffhanger may never be resolved, especially since Avowed will be set before both PoE games. Still, I'm curious to see what comes of that game and OW 2.

Personally I found the Outer Worlds to be a really tight package with just about the perfect scale of world for the story being told. Where I'd like to see improvements is in the customizability of weapons down to changing color or say material (as the guns had a steam punk meets buck rogers kinda vibe (Firefly?)) where you could modify your armor as well in a similar way to what Fallout 4 was doing but even more expansive. Broke ass Mad Scientist with a quest line or story arc resulting in discovering the fate of his long lost peers and their abandoned research maybe?
I did basically everything in The Outer Worlds and it was around a 40hrs. or so, which felt just about perfect for the type of game it is. I loves me a massive open world but not everything needs to go that route and there is plenty to be said for a really tight and nuanced campaign.
Fallout New Vegas would have been a better game if the map was about 15-25% smaller and all the systems therein had gotten 20-25% more time in development and polish. Loved it as it was but that was feeling after having completed every inch of it.

I haven't played these types of games since I was a kid and playing them now I have no idea how I played them when I was younger... I played Armored Warfare while Obsidian developed it. They introduced a ton of really cool mechanics to the game that made it a breath of fresh air and feel different in a positive way from similar games. They even introduced a tiny bit of RP to the game with some stories, resource collection to upgrade a base in your garage (which would grant you bonuses) loot boxes that could only be earned by playing, and a host of really fun game modes. and during this sort of early access development period, the game enjoyed a large following, especially those who had grown dissatisfied with World of Tanks or War Thunder. Unfortunately, the publisher just wanted a copy and paste of World of Tanks but with modern vehicles so they fired Obsidian and took over development, eliminating or severely limiting every cool thing that Obsidian had added thus losing a large portion of their player base. It was shortly after that when I stopped playing for good and uninstalled that game.

The big question now is if microsoft let them do their thing. I could see their suits say "the outer worlds didn't do so well. You know what sold well ? Skyrim. Now do skyrim (and call it Avowed)."
OTOH the fact that Pentiment has been released in today's industry is almost a miracle, but it is 1/a nothing budget for microsoft and 2/probably a condition on the buyout (pure speculation but it definitely is a passion project with no commercial potential so...)
I really really hope we don't get a Bioware situation at worst, or the same situation they started in with the publisher pushing the release date before the game is done (sounds familiar in 2022 doesn't it, they were pioneers ^^)

While everyone was raving how great Dragon Age was back in the day and I had good time with it and the combat was gorgeous (unlike the epileptic color show we got in Inquisition). However I couldn't help feeling that I was playing more polished version of Neverwinter Nights 2. So many design choices and story bits just reminded me of Neverwinter Nights 2 and it's expansions.
Neverwinter Nights 2 is still probably one of the most epic journeys I've gone in video games.
Gotta give shout out to Alpha Protocol while I'm here. The setting, the choices that mattered were great and I wish there would be more modern day rpgs. The combat didn't bother me that much since it was still time when B-level combat was expected in the rpg genre. How ever some of the skills were so overpowered that game was pretty broken on that regard.
