Thank you for your very helpful video. You had the best video on youtube to help me with my Yamaha MOX8. Dust got under the keys making some notes spike up in full volume. Thanks again.
It helped me unclog the keyboard, it had a key that sounded harder than the others, I cleaned the key and put vaceline on it and it was perfect, thank you and God bless you
Hey, thanks. I hope I never need this video, but I thank God for helpful people like you that allow SO many to save time and money with DIY! Thanks to you! PS I was diggin the intro piano!
Thank you so much for this video! A few keys on my MOXF were noisy but I was kinda scared to just open that rather expensive instrument up without any knowledge of what I would see inside. This is extremely helpful, thankfully replacing some keys isn't that hard after all!
Thanks for this - Using your vid saved me hours - Additional tip - if you need to remove "hammers"they're numbered on the white plastic and go back in specific places based on the weighting
Thanks a lot Scott ! In my case I had hooked a white key with my wedding ring while sliding my hand on 'sharp dressed man'. It had jumped up without breaking, so I had to put it back in its slot. I managed greatly in a couple hours thanks to your video. Next time I play in public... I'll be single ; -)
I play "single" all the time too, not only because of the likelihood of the problem you had, but also because I noticed strange pock marks showing up on the black keys of my low end. After further investigation, I discovered that it was from my wedding ring hitting them and leaving little dents. Just remember to keep your ring(s) some place you won't walk off without them (oops).
Thanks a lot for your video! I have also fixed my MOXF8 today in which one of the keys (the second highest E note) did not work. I managed to order the spare part at Syntaur with the IC board over the higher register and the rubber feet overlying. Following your video I am able to replace the board and the key works again.
Thank you very much for this video. I have a MOX8 but it seems pretty the same mechanically. I have a different problem, as my keyboard turns off by itself once in a while so I'm gonna try to open and see if there's something dodgy inside.
thank you so much for sharing this video, i have an mx88 and some keys is kinda wobbly, is it just loose? i might follow the steps and do it myself to save money
Thanks for the video! It makes me less afraid to open mine up... but my problem is not a broken key, but rather a broken/dirty/misbehaving key sensor - one key is *way* more sensitive, randomly, than the others. Any chance I'll be able to replace that? Or maybe just clean it out?
the problem is probably due to the rubbery gray contact strip that you can see on the green board under the keys when he takes them out . You can take that off and clean or replace . But I think this is better done by a real repair guy .
Does this mean that the contacts for this beast are open to the air?! And to environmental dust and crud?! If so I guess I better start covering my keyboard. (I had a Yamaha PS120 for like 15 years in the same space with no problems....)
I didn't replace that strip in this video (obviously). I will give you the short answer and then (if you care) you can read the long answer that follows: It might not necessarily be dust (though that is the most frequent culprit). If you are experiencing this problem (I would go ahead and replace that little grey strip. They aren't real expensive and it's better than opening this lovely design up again. LONG ANSWER: the way your velocity control works is there are two sensors under the key that are very close together, one on top of the other (or some reasonable facsimile thereof) . As you press the key down, the computer detects the difference in time it takes for those two sensors to close and that translates into a reading of the velocity... the faster the time, the harder you must have hit the key. These switches might get dust or any other debris between them or simply short out so that the moment you press the key down, it closes both switches at exactly the same moment (which translates to King Kong playing on your keyboard). You might be able to blow it out, but I wouldn't go through the hassle... just replace it and sleep well at night.
Awesome, thanks for the info. I just might give it a go. There's a local repair shop that wants $120 for the first hour of repair, and they won't get to if for 4-6 weeks. :-(
Thank you for this excellent video. I have 5 keys that have stopped working in the last octave up top so I took my MoXf8 apart following your guide. I cleaned the rubber contacts and the circuit with rubbing alcohol then gently drew over the circuit with a pencil, which I saw in another video. Re-assembled everything but still the 5 keys are dead (no sound). Any ideas?
Hola así mismo hice yo apenas por qué me dejó de funcionar la tecla de fa de la cuarta octava . Siempre si lograste hacer que sonaran las teclas Si lo lograste me podrías ayudar por favor 🙏
Hi Scott! I have the same problem. I found your video on RUclips - clear and simple! Please add this part number in the comments. It would be very helpful in searching the web.
THANK YOU!! Super tutorial, I managed to open and repair my Moxf8 👍👍👍👍 I switched the mid octaves that I have used the most, with the ones at the top and bottom sides. I noted that there is a silicon gel inside the keys. Do you maybe know what is it?
Thanks for the vid Scott! Can you make a video repairing the LCD screen on the MOFX8? Anybody know where a tutorial might be for replacing the screen?!
Hi< my name is Vincent and I like your video very much. I did the same thing as you and your video help me to do it. can you tel me how to get the same set of black keys? Iwill apreciate very much. Than you for the videos you do an amaicing job.
Thanks, do you know where I can buy the flat cable that connects the keyboard to the display? I requested Yamaha but the times are very long. Unfortunately it is a non-standard flat, it has 27 pins. Thank you
sir am using moxf6.. my keyboards all octave. A. nd D# KEYS SOUND louder thn other...when I play piano soung is (ting ting).... when the room tempereture is below 22 degre or lower the problem is autometicly solved.. but if it over 28 or more the problem is again start..are this is for humidity problem! what can I do!
The flat ribbon cable (and its slot), as you can see at 5:11 in this video, has dirt gathered in it. Also the electronic board under the rubber band (see 07:33 in the video) must be dirty. With humidity they get muddy and create short-circuits, when you press the keys. Open the keyboard carefully and try to clean those areas with contact spray.
Usually these type of keyboard, they are weighted keys.... i wonder if i can make them more heavy feeling.... OR btw what if the keyboard lost its heavy feel, how can i bring it back to its heavy weighted keys like from factory???
If u are on the first piano voice... The grand piano setting....what if as you play the scale up higher the sound of the scale goes out of tune slightly? Do keyboards go out of tune once in a while? Is it fixable? Have you had it happen on the moxf8?
Digital synths can't go out of tune, like analog synths can. I admit though, I can't think of anything that would go wrong based on your explanation. If there was some issue that caused the wrong note to play, I could sort of see how that could happen.
Nice video, thank you...maybe you know what has to be fixed to get rid of noisy keys? some keys became noisy on my MOXF8 - I think it happened because of intensive usage. Thank you in advance
Hey Arik, Short Answer: There isn't anything that can be done. Long Answer: If there is no abnormal lateral movement of the keys, there isn't much to do about it. My MoXF8 has been noisy since I bought it. When you buy weighted keys, there will usually be more noise because of the mechanisms inside that make the weight. It's just the nature of the beast with weighted keys.
Hi Scott, thank you for your reply. I just want to tell you - not all keys only some of them became noisy because of heavy usage, e.. like 2 central actives white keys and I thought there is a stripe inside to be replaced like on some other Yamaha pianos. Does MOXF-8 have this stripe or something similar like this? The noise comes when key rebounds. Thank you
Yes, there is a felt strip inside that catches the metal "hammer" when it returns to the resting position. As with all felt, the more you beat it, the harder it becomes and, therefore, the less noise reducing. I've never tried replacing it.
Found your video because obviously I broke something. I cracked the left end assembly on my moxf8, is that a hard fix? After seeing this video I believe that I can manage and ordered the part from Yamaha. Any advise. Thanks
whaouu !! this keyboard seems to be very fragile !! I expected to buy a Moxf8, but I'm not sure that it's a good idea. I had a motif 8 classic 10 years ago, and I had a lot of problems whith broken keys... seems that it could be worst with this moxf8 keybed.. too bad.
Greetings! Can you tell me how I could replace the felt strip in my MOXF8? I am pretty sure it is getting worn out mostly in the middle octaves of the keyboard. I managed to replace one octave of keys thanks to your video, so I'm reasonably sure I could tackle replacing the felt unless it's a real hard procedure. Thanks in advance!
Thank you for this video . I've replaced many keys and other things in keyboards in my days and this got to be the worst design to get into ever ! I can't believe how stupid this is . You could never do it if you had a problem at a gig .
Yes, the process would be the same. The chassis is similar. The moxf6 is the shorter version of the f8. Everything should be the same or at least very similar.
Damn. What a complicated mess. I just bought a MOXF8 after feeling limited by the MO8 I've owned for about 6 years. My MO8 has some major squeaky key issues and I fear running into the same problem down the road with the MOXF8. But I suppose there's just no way around it. Just makes it irritating when trying to record voice and keys at the same time. Oh well.
OMG!!! I am so shocked at the cheap plastic these keys are made of...we're talking about a n almost 2K. $ keyboard...which us supposed to have Graded Hammer Action. My 12yr old Motif 6 has much better quality keys.

Thanks for this - Using your vid saved me hours - Additional tip - if you need to remove "hammers"they're numbered on the white plastic and go back in specific places based on the weighting
I'm glad I could be of service! Thanks for the extra tid-bit of info.
Thanks a lot Scott !

Great review. Do you have any videos on fixing the outputs on this unit. Headphone and stereo outs have starting playing real low. Thanks
Where did you buy replacement?
I had to replace a key on a roland Fantom g This reminds me of that time Im glad you made the video Im keeping it
Thank you very much for this video. I have a MOX8 but it seems pretty the same mechanically. I have a different problem, as my keyboard turns off by itself once in a while so I'm gonna try to open and see if there's something dodgy inside.

Thanks, I will take that advice. :-) I've got about a 25% success rate with my repair projects, don't think I wanna do that to my moXF8!

Great key replacement! Any tips on why my fx8 won't start? Is there a fuse or something?
Thanks for sharing...now I know to heavily look into the quality of the keys before considering a yamaha keyboard.

saved me a lot of time fixing a key problem, thankyou!
Thanks very much, it's really helpful
What's the name if your driller with battery pls?
You are very welcome! I'm glad we could help.
It's just a regular DeWalt with an 18v battery
I need to know where I can find the keys🤦🏾♂️
Thanks a bunch, this was a great tutorial on how to fix my moxf8! It works perfectly now!
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the vid Scott! Can you make a video repairing the LCD screen on the MOFX8? Anybody know where a tutorial might be for replacing the screen?!
Nice one. Do you know what would make a white key stay down only sometimes and a couple of keys not in line fractionally? It's a new moxf8
I have a Yamaha ModX8 with a wiggly key. Is it the same for that one? Thank you!!
May I ask you for a link, one can order the necessary spare parts?

I have a key that sounds like it's out of tune on a MoX8, do you think the key needs replacing ?
What can I do,it’s difficult to get a replacement here where I live
Seeking advice, my moxf6 has 4 dead keys E and b flat on the lower and upper octave it just stopped working, any advice on what might happen to it?

Same process for a MOX8 right?
I have a mox 8 for 10 years and just had my first key stick, will see how it goes.
Hey Scott,
question, where did you get your black key strip from? Thank you
You can get it from Yamaha parts 714 522-9011
Hello, I have MOXF6 . Is replacing keys procedure the same? It seems that MOXF8 has much more screws to remove in order to access the keys area? Thanks
Can I do the same to my mx88?

Is the MODX8 the same deal?
I haven't worked on that one, so I can't say

Great video, where can I buy some replacement keys thou?
The only part missed is adding grease to the keys being replaced. If you don’t you will have loud clicking taking place after the repair.
Where can I buy a new sets of keys?
Reverb is the best place
Found your video because obviously I broke something. I cracked the left end assembly on my moxf8, is that a hard fix? After seeing this video I believe that I can manage and ordered the part from Yamaha. Any advise.

Take your time and KEEP TRACK OF YOUR SCREWS!!! It's not difficult, just a little cumbersome.
Mine is totally freezing( the note or the key) how can I fix?
Useful video as some of my moxf8 keys are showing signs of wear. Thanks for posting.
Very helpful! ❤thanks!
thanks for the video.....our church keys has been taking too much communion juice.
I'm not sure what "hooks" you are talking about. Could you specify?
Thanks for your Instructions I hope I dont have that problem

This is really sick! You working at Yamaha?
No... I just like taking stuff apart and don't want to pay somebody else a ton of money. I break a lot of keys lol
Excellent
weird, never seen that design with the keys joined together like that

The Japanese used to take pride. Now Yamaha makes junk.
