Ya, that should be done by the dealership when taking ownership of the bike. They charge enough for prep fee’s, it should be part of the prep prior to you leaving the dealership.
Did mine on the CVO RG ST which made a world of difference! Most dealers charge a dealer prep, it would be nice if they did it for you before you take delivery of the bike.
Same here @erich3663. I actually increase a couple of mm more than was in the chart. For now, I’m satisfied but can see a good Legend suspension in the future.
Just pickup up my 2024 RoadGlide last weekend , I love this bike ! I stepped up from a 2014 StreetGlide special . Anyhow I rode it back to NJ from Lancaster wasn’t a bad ride home , but man when I loaded me and the wife on I knew something was wrong . I did the same thing read the manual and wow 40mm adjustment !! . She rides perfect now . Thanks for your excellent videos !
I took my ole lady for a ride for the first time since I put the SE Ohlins on.. pita to adjust since ya gotta do both sides with a tool. Landed up leaving it on that setting for ride to work next day.. all 1mm of sag lol I’m 170 She’s 120 so not a huge difference but enough
Surprised you haven't changed windshield out yet. I test rode a 24 RG. The buffering was terrible with a skull cap helmet and glasses. At 70 mph I was practically blind and had to back out of it.
Your salesperson should have told you to adjust the shocks as soon as you got home. I agree with others below that it should be part of the pick-up process. I added a chopped tour-pak to my new CVO and had to add another 15mm to my weight according to the chart. So the tour-pak was more mm's than my weight. It seems to be working well for now.
Bro, thank you so much for this video. Just got the 24 myself. Just went out to the garage and pulled the bags off. Mine wasn't set either. Did the same as you but added a passenger at 100lbs. Manual calls for 35mm or 1.3 inches. I set the hydraulic side at 10 for an extra 40-50lbs of random stuff I carry in the bags all the time
@@midwestvenom1 I agree that the service dept should handle, but those requests need to come from the salesman handling your deal as the service dept still needs to get their mechanics paid, regardless of who is paying. The salesman handling you should grease all the departments for you though (to your point) to make sure the bike is ready for you. Every time I buy a new touring model, I try to get at least one thing from each dept for free.
John, This is one of the absolute BEST upgrades you can perform on your new bike: Give George Quay or DJ Korzen a call. They are the owners of PRO ACTION Suspension in Beaver Falls, PA. Order a pair of their FABULOUS rear shock absorbers….. and install them on your bike ASAP. This will make a great upgrade video on your channel…… but beyond that you will not believe just how GREAT these shocks are until you try them. Of my 40+ years wrenching on Harleys…… these shocks are hands down BETTER than even Ohlins…… guaranteed. Tell them that J. Mac sent you!!! 😎🍀🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hey my guy! Love the video. I’ve got a 24’ cvo street glide with about 2500 miles on it. I’m a suspension fanatic. I live in Arizona and the roads are all bad here. I set my bike to what the owners manual said and I felt the back end still bottom out in some areas and areas where the asphalt had erosion the bike would become very deflective. I ended up adding 50lbs of preload and found that plus loosening the dampening a click or two made the bike handle small square bumps much better and g-outs as well. Made the bike feel very balanced front to back. Thanks for the video!!!
Road to the dealership last weekend on my 2024 and by the time I got there, I was ready to change the suspension. Knew I needed to do this, but didn’t know how bad it was so I thought I would wait. Great video and after talking to the owner of my dealership, she said she was gonna make sure that they started to fit everybody before it went out.
Hi John, thanks for this detailed video…. I bought the Kemimoto Delux Cup Holder last week from Amazon, to my door in less than two days, great…. Install did not go well. The tightening long screw pulled right out of the round through piece as I tried to tighten the knob. The round through piece had not been threaded deep enough to hold the bolt. I had to redrill the piece and retread it to properly take the bolt. You are not the complaint dept but perhaps Kemimoto needs to know. Thanks I like the Cup Holder.
Amazing! Folks that have been riding for a million years don't check the preload before going out on a ride on their new bikes or after loading the bike up with significant different loads - sorry but you should have known this already, especially being into the 'performance' bagger thing. And more amazing is that for a so-called premium brand/model like HD tourer, still in 2024, requires a tool to adjust pre-load. At least none of this is necessary on a truly premium model like the Pan America S as the bike adjusts preload/ rebound automatically for you, including when loads change - and of course, also changes suspension settings to match changes in the ride modes (eg. going to Sports mode also stiffens the suspension as well) - and yes, you can override the change from controls on the handlebars. I know, not everyone wants to ride a trail bike, even though the PAm is a great sports/tourer with just about all the modern tech and truly premium. And I haven't mentioned, 150hp out of the box.
First thing i did when i got my CVO. Totally makes a difference. I now have Rob's suspension from his CVO ST on mine. I cant believe the difference. Harley made an amazing suspension, rides like a dream!
Man, thanks for this video! I got my first brand new bike last week,24 RG and this video took me from kind of disappointed to completely in love with the ride of this new bike! Thanks again
One thing to note. In the manual on page 48, note 5 instructs to add a preload distance of .59” to accommodate the weight of the tour pak. Then use the left side knob for cargo weight. My tour pak stays off most of the time but for an upcoming trip, I will use it. If I understand the manual, I set the right side for my weight + .59” and then adjust the left side knob for my gear and luggage.
Motorcycles should not leave the dealer until the suspension is set up for the rider. I almost want to say sold without suspension but, out the door with the riders choice of suspension. 👍
This is an excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate how to adjust both the right and left shock. I just bought a 2024 Street Glide and this weekend we put about 500 miles on it and I felt as though my spine would compress with each bump in the road. It was painful. I'm about 250lbs and mine wasn't set for anyone that size. The dealer should probably ask that question and at least pre-set them at the same time they are setting up the key fob.
Thanks for video John , definitely needs adjustment after delivery . So maybe dumb ? But if your a 50/50 rider passenger rider and adjusted for both weights , what happens when you don’t have a passenger and don’t change adjustment ??As this is a pain in the a** to do every time you change weight . I just adjusted for me and a passenger , I only had set for myself with no gear or extra passenger and was bottoming out almost always . 😮
I had the same question. I set mine for a bit heavy on the right side and when wife rides; I adjust the dial on the left by hand basically all the way up. I'm not sure that's the right way - but that's my plan.
John, at the beginning of the video you say from Top of locking ring and then when you are actually doing the adjustment (12.50) you say 1/2” between the two rings. Just looking for clarification…. Thanks
I bought a RG CVO Saturday and paid $995 service fee. I didn't even make it home and the front tire low pressure light came on. Then I found out about the shocks needing adjusting. Mine too had no preload at all and the rebound adjustment was on the softest setting. Not good for a 260 lb rider. I got everything squared away myself even though the dealership should have done it since he charged me for setup. I did call the dealership and told them about both issue and that they need to do better in the future.
Thanks for the tip! Going out to adjust mine now. Love the new bike, got me a 24 in black as well. Working on the build series myself also. Keep up the great vids brother!
All that effort redesigning that bike and kept the antiquated rear suspension. Silly. A single adjustable mono rear shock would have served that bike good.
That is SO strange to me the way they have different adjustments on either side. Really weird. I ride with My Wife most of the time, but if I decide to go on a ride alone, I'm not gonna keep taking My saddle bags off and readjusting. Thank You for this video though, we just got back from our first ride and we bottomed out once. Definitely gonna make the adjustments 😎👍
My ST came set for 250lb rider. Set my sag about 30mm. And it was 8 mm I’m 195lb. The front forks were not even the same preload on one fork was 4 turns the other a little under 5 lol. Harley says the dealer should work with purchaser to get this shit right at delivery. Never happened on mine even after I said something. After setting bike was much better still setting dampening empirically.
Hey John can you confirm if the legend suspension revo with the canister fit the 2024 road glide? I went to a Harley dealership and saw that a customer cut into the top of his lights for the canister to fit and to me that’s tacky. What suspension are you going to go with?
K so is that kemimoto drink/cup holder the medium or large size? And can you change the clamp orientation to be either in a vertical or horizontal position as in on a up and down handlebar perpendicular to the ground or as a parallel bar to the ground?
This question is specifically related to your product. This is an m8. I want to redirect the larger breather hose / recirc to the atmosphere by plugging the air cleaner side and running the breather hose to a small filter. I believe the answer to my question is no, but figured Id ask anyway. Will this mod I suggest adversely affect YOUR product ?
When I bought my 22 I didn’t realize the dealership didn’t give me all my extras. (Suspension wrench, owners manual, rain sock) and when I asked them after I got home they said they don’t have to give it to me.
That’s weird The preload used to be set on the dial on the low side With nothing on the high side. New way gonna have better ride I’m sure .. yet to ride 2024 bike .. the SE Ohlins gotta use the tool on both sides if u toss your ole lady on.. PITA lol

Very true.
Bro I bought 2 Cvo’s in 4 months. A 23 then a 24 Cvo st. I had to remind them about the bell ring lol. Dealerships give 0 shits about the customers

@TRC_WA congrats!
Dealer should set you up when you pick it up. I always read owner manual when by a new bike.
Absolutely, SAG should be first thing anyone sets on a motorcycle. Surprised dealers don’t do this as part of the sale.
They definitely should

For the price that shock set up should be part of the dealer prep. Imo

Always ask your MOM- Motorcycle Owners Manual. A good salesman would have set that up for you.
A good sales man won’t have time to do that. A good service department should do this. Not the salesperson.

Can’t wait to see what suspension setup you go with. I’ve been debating on going with the Wilburs.
I adjusted my 24SG before I rode it and have not bottomed out after 2k miles. I weigh 280lbs.

I hate the rear bottoming out. Just got the Ohlins rear, and it was a huge difference.... Big man life!!!
I set mine up the day after I got it. It works so well I dont see the need for anything else .

Setting up the sag is absolutely the 1st thing anyone should do on a motorcycle. However if you are bottoming out you may need a stiffer spring.
Wow Harley shows up with adj suspension about 40 years late and then it's soo complicated for no reason, lol 😂
It’s really not complicated super easy
