  • Hey Everyone
    This weeks video is a little different!
    We'll be looking at how to adjust the side seams of a wedding dress.
    I'm hoping this video will be useful for anyone who is either altering their own wedding dress, making a wedding dress, adjusting a loved one's or perhaps want to be a bridal seamstress too!
    In this video I demonstrate how to bring in the side seams of a lace and beaded bridal gown but it also applies to letting out the side seams! Just remember not to unpick the beads or lace past the side seams, as you'll create more work for yourself when it comes to sewing everything back on!!
    This can also apply to ANY DRESS really!!
    I've given you a couple of PRO TIPS that will be useful for any alterations project.
    Hope you're all having an awesome sewing week :)
    If you'd like any more info, leave me a comment below!
    Mol x
    P.S It's a longy but a goody...hard to condense down an involved alteration!

    Loved your video and found it so easy to follow. I'm taking the challenge of recreating a wedding dress for my daughter's debutante ball and as someone who usually only really mends this is a huge curve ball. I have a month and some careful planning should allow for fittings throughout. Wish me luck! Though I feel so much better about the whole thing after watching this. Bring it on ! 😀

      Robyn-Maree Penny ah that's awesome. I'm glad you found it useful😁. It's sounds so exciting making your daughter's dress, you'll feel so accomplished when you finish! Give me a shout if you need any advice 😙 xx

    hello! thank you so much for this. Both of my dresses have sleeves - is the process any different for a sleeved dress? I am a complete beginner! Thank you so much for your help :)

    I really needed this tutorial. I offered to alter my son's finace's dress and was totally freaked out. You made it look very manageable. I will let you know how it goes.

    Love the stretch idea, dress I bought recently fits well but a bit tight in some areas. Adding to it would make it much easier to get on/off.

    There IS a very quick way to tie a knot, though I don't know if I'll explain it well. Wrap the thread around the tip of your finger two or three times. Let's say your right forefinger. With your left hand, hold the rest of the thread out and pull, while, with your right thumb, you roll the wrapped thread off your fingertip. Trust me: it'll knot up.
    I hope that works for you!

    It's only easy (simp!e) if you have a little knowledge. It can take quite awhile to get it where it looks good and The Bride is happy....THAT WHAT IT REALLY IS ALL ABOUT!!! This is a skill and when you can't do it pay someone...I sew for a living and what I can't do I have no problem finding someone who can ...Respect the Profession ...we can never be replace with a computer...

    This is a great video, very clear and helpful - but would you confirm whether the lining seam needs to be hand sewn to close? I've taken in a bodice which has three layers; fine net with appliques, heavy glitter layer and a final lining. The net and glitter layers I've taken in by machine exactly as you show in your video, but without turning the entire dress inside out (impossible for a large gown) I'm assuming that I close the lining seam by hand sewing. Is this correct please as no-one every seems to show or discuss it. Thank you!

    • @mollycostume
      @mollycostume 5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes I'd hand sew for the neatest finish but most of the dresses I work on, they've been topstitched to close the seam by the factories, so I do this too sometimes :)

    Interesting video! Id be interested to know how much profit wedding gowns create ...theyre expensive to buy and im guessing that is due to fabrics time experrise etc would be great to see a breakdown of all that (not your personal finances obviously, just generally in bridal) and i think rhat would help anyone thinking of going into that field... you must be a saint i lose patience if i spend 4 hours on the same garment, id never manage a wedding dress lol. I did make my own wedding dress but we did it on the quiet so i made betty dress from sew over it using fabric from ikea!! Not dressy in the slightest! And i made it with two days to go! Lol would be interested in what its like to work in a bridal ie is it stressful? Fun? What do you love and hate about bridal etc? X

      @frockmolsews7672  5 лет назад +3

      Hi Claire. Thanks for the watch! Glad it was interesting for you :) Yes, defo need to be patient. The thing with bridal is that it's seasonal and it's best to diversify so you have other revenue streams....that's what I'm trying to work on at the mo with the whole workshop idea and maybe one day RUclips! If you wing an email to: molly@frockandmol.co.uk, I'll be happy to give you more details if it's helpful x

    • @Penguinandpear

      @@frockmolsews7672 Thanks Mol, it was really just me being inquisitive. I'm not thinking of working in Bridal so dont really need the finer details, okay I'm just nosey lol...good luck with diversifying. It can be difficult juggling lots of balls but certainly can be done. Are you any good at graphic design? If so you could produce pins, badges, stickers with sewing sayings on them, they seem to be quite popular in the sewing community atm...xx

    Hello! Thankyou so much for your lovely video. I’m getting married next year and a kind friend is lending me her dress for the day. It’s 27 years old ivory satin with pearl beading on the front. Its beautiful but also a size too big. Is there any simple way I can alter the size or fit without causing any permanent damage or changes or the dress? Hope you have a lovely day xx

    • @frockmolsews7672
      @frockmolsews7672  4 года назад +1

      Aimee miller hi Aimee. Thank you for your kind comment 😁. What you can do is take in the side seam but not trim off any excess, that way your friend could let it back out! If the pearls run along the side seams, that might be an issue as you'll likely need to remove along the line that will be stitched! You could also hand stitch it and try and avoid any beads! Hope that helps xx

    I haven’t seen anybody asking, but I would be curious to know how long this whole process really took? I adjust wedding dresses but some of them I wish I wouldn’t have to deal with 😄 because it seems impossible sometimes to do and it takes many hours, and I feel bad to charge so much (good thing I don’t do this for a living, so I don’t have to charge a lot).

    • @frockmolsews7672
      @frockmolsews7672  4 года назад +5

      Sorry for late reply! I've sped up over the years but I'd say anywhere from 1.5-3 hours. As I do it professionaly, I charge an amount that covers my materials and the mortgage! It's a skilled trade, so I'm happy to charge what an electrician, carpenter etc would per day/hour x

    Your video was very helpful but I want to know how do you get the lace to fit when you take up and inch or more on the side seam and there is a gap on the lace panel and not applied lace appliques to meet the center of the seam and match the overlaying pattern of the lace?

    • @frockmolsews7672
      @frockmolsews7672  4 года назад +2

      I usually try to take lace from the train if it's not noticeable or I just let the bride know that the lace might not meet x

      BARB SHUFLIN oh really. Is the bust side seam sticking out to far at the top? X

    • @sueiverson258
      @sueiverson258 4 года назад

      This happens all the time. Often you need to take out the entire side seam and trim the waistline seams to match. This is often helpful for a truly great fit however. But you have to also take out the entire front waist. This is not often as easy as it might seem.
