You can't go wrong with Cher! "Half Breed", "Dark Lady " are two more of her classic ones of course you can't go wrong with "Turn Back Time", "Jessie James", or "I've found someone " Everything Cher does is amazing!
I agree with all the songs mentioned. I would like to add “Take Me Home” which also had one of her best album cover photos I’ve ever seen. Hey what about “Do You Believe”. She was my music hero growing up. Never missed an episode of “Sonny and Cher” and after their divorce, “The Cher Show”. The comedy skits showed the great comedic timing she had. Don’t forget Oscar winner for “Moonstruck”. Fantastic in “Mask” and Oscar nomination for “Silkwood”. 🔥🔥🔥
Cher was the first woman on TV who was dressed to the nines every week and with a different hairstyle. She had beautiful long, long hair but definitely used wigs and still does. Walking in Memphis is another great song of hers. 👍👍👍
You should hear the version of "Walking in Memphis" by the man who wrote it; Marc Cohn and had a big hit with it. I have never even heard Cher had a version of it.
The cycle continued.... listen where she says; three months latter I'm a girl in trouble and I haven't seen him in awhile. then she says; "She was born in a wagon of a traveling show, she (Now Cher) had to dance for the money they threw .. as, her father is a grandpa and she had a little baby girl to support."!
Very good and deeply insightful observation.. I had just thought that scrolling down, the second verse came up, along with your comment... universal karma 🤗🤗🤗
I always wonder how many listeners miss that change from the 1st to the 3nd verse. There's a similar shift in Jim Croche's song Cats in the Craddle about missing all the time with his kid growing up. The last verse changes to "when you coming home son?"
Cher's voice and singing style makes her, in my opinion, one of the best performers of "story-songs". And this song is arguable one of her best. Love it so much.
I remember her singing this song on the Sonny & Cher show. It was just Cher's single. During the Sonny and Cher show, Cher had quite a free singles ... she started out shy, the duets with Sonny... but later on, the Sonny and Cher show she did sing her early single hits. I REMEMBER THAT!!
"Snake Oil", not soda pop. And she's probably wearing a wig. I don't know if she still does, but she used to own a line of wigs and during her shows would change wigs quite often along with her costumes.
The music in this song is so haunting. The sadness is that it's about the cycle of poverty and told kind of in the same way The Ghetto by Elvis was told. The narrator herself was born into this cycle, and then after she became 'a gal in trouble,' her daughter was then born into the same situation. This song used to make me cry and feel hurt in my heart.
So the town talked smack about them but then would come at night to lay their money down. The 16 year old got pregnant 3 months later and the 21 year old took off. So just like her the child was born in the caravan and now the 16 year old had to dance. The cycle continues.
I grew up with Sonny & Cher's music & their TV show. Sonny wrote their hits in the 60's including "Baby Don't Go", "I Got You Babe", "The Beat Goes On" & "Little Man". He also wrote the song "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" which Cher recorded in 1966. Other songs she did were "Half-Breed" & "Dark Lady". Cher went on to have a big solo career.
You guys are probably too young to have heard the phrase "a gal in trouble". It is a reference to being pregnant. It was different times back then. There was a lot of judgement/condemnation of girls/women who got pregnant out of wedlock. Women would often move to another town if she was "in trouble". The guy (if it was known who he was) was expected to "do the right thing" (i.e. marry her) and "make an honest woman out of her". People would say, "they HAD to get married" or it was referred to as a "shotgun wedding". In Aerosmith's song, "Walk This Way", he says, "you can't catch me cause the rabbit done died" meaning that the woman was pregnant and he was outa here. It's all part of the "good old days" that weren't so good. 😒
Adding on to this. Back in the day before the pee stick pregnancy tests, it involved going to the doctor and a blood test I won't go into detail with but if the rabbit died - that was a positive pregnancy test.
@@MichelleCWeber Absolutely! I got pregnant “out of wedlock” at 19, in 1982. You would have thought by the reaction of my family that I was a serial killer! (They are Roman Catholic) I was told I would destroy the family name, ruin the family reputation and to get married. So I did. Not in church though, but I was pressured to have a church “Blessing” to somehow make it official in their eyes. If one person, one friend or family member had offered a kind shoulder or advice, I never would have married. I felt I HAD to make it work since I was the problem. So I stayed 17 years in a very abusive marriage ( I never fought back, wasn’t raised with violence or alcoholism) had 4 children so no escape. He wanted to Kill us but in the end he died by suicide. Im still recovering with Complex PTSD and have had 2 of my 4 kids have drug issues and prison time. Now I Know he was a narcissist and verbally, physically, emotionally and sexually abused me and the only time I stood up to him was when he would try to go at the children.
@@Dee-JayW yeah I'm a big fan of The Carol Burnett Show too. Those gals were stunning as well even though the only thing popping up in my mind right now is the curtain gown skit.
True story! Elvis Presley had one of his guy’s call her and asked her for a date. She turned the invitation down. On David Letterman he asked why did she turn him down because that was Elvis! She said yeah I know, but she was too nervous to go out with him because he was Elvis.
Cher is in my top 5 women I admire along with Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Loretta Young, Kathrin Hepburn. She has beautiful long raven hair but also wore many wigs on her shows.
The song describes the life of a girl, the song's narrator, who was "born in the wagon of a traveling show" with her mother, an exotic dancer, and father, a patent medicine salesman and preacher. Though the family endures jeers of being "gypsies, tramps and thieves" from townspeople, the men of the town would always come out at night to "lay their money down." One day, the family takes in a 21-year-old man who travels with them from "just south of Mobile" to Memphis. One night during the trip, the man implicitly has intercourse with the 16-year-old narrator without her father knowing, and three months after the man disappears in Memphis, the narrator is "in trouble" (pregnant). The narrator's daughter is born later, now the narrator is the dancer and now Grandpa did whatever he could (as now he is the grandfather of the narrator's new baby) continuing another generation of Gypsies, Tramps, & Thieves. If you listen to the studio version the song it is a better understanding of the story of the song.
Her natural hair is so gorgeous. She also fully embraces wig life. Her clothes for the Sonny & Cher show were by the great Bob Mackie who also dressed Carole Burnett at the same time. Cheer just had the perfect body and attitude for his vision. I adored her as a kid. I loved my Cher doll and outfits.
4:00 three months later she’s a gal in trouble means she was pregnant and the guy was gone. Her daughter was born in a traveling show, just like she was.
Hi beautiful couple! This song teaches us not to look down on folks - live that! I remember vividly swinging on our backyard swing in Cheltenham, GLOS UK and singing along to this when I was about 13! Good days! I was raised on 60s music - in my teens through Disco and Motown and ABBA! So lucky! I live in So Cal now and drive past Chers house in Malibu almost every Saturday. This is from the TV show that Sonny & Cher had in the early 70's. In the 60's they had been hippie icons. By the early 70's Cher had gone glamorous, wearing Bob Mackey designer gowns every week on their show. I saw them in concert around that same time. Cher came out in a tight scarlet evening gown with her hair straight & shiny (& down to her rear). She looked stunning & sounded great. Sonny looked dapper in a tux & was really funny. He & Cher were hilarious together. What a great team they were.💙☮💙
This was clipped from the Sonny & Cher tv show in the 70's. She used a lot of wigs because she would change hairstyles 2 or 3 times a show while it was being filmed in front of a live audience.

From her show-stopping red carpet events to her dazzling outfits on tour, Mackie says he has created hundreds of outfits.
Bob Mackey designed the mot stunning dresses that only Cher could pull off. I would jam to this song, wearing my whiter go-go boots while singing into my brush, in front of the mirror. I was 10!

This song came out in 1971, written by Bob Stone and produced by Snuff Garrett. This was Cher's first solo hit. It was said that she didn't care for this song, actually, it shows in her lack-luster performance in this video, I could've sworn she hit a flat note as well. If you listen to the studio version, you'll see what I mean. You can just tell by her demeanor while doing this song, she wasn't into it. Well, despite it not being one of her better performances, I still enjoyed watching this reaction video, thanks!
Thinking of Cher, have you ever watched Adam Lambert doing Do You Believe In Life After Love? Cher watched him do it and clearly loved it. It takes an already good song, slows it down and makes it very emotive. Worth a reaction for sure.
I especially loved watching Cher in the 70's I always thought she was so glamorous and beautiful. Her style is timeless. She was also very funny and has great comic timing. Then when she became an actress she was amazing. She is certainly what they call a triple threat. My favorite movie she did , was Moonstruck.
Sonny and Cher had a show that was on Friday nights. I was 18. I used to make my boyfriend pick me up after the show finished. Or, he would watch with me. I always watched. Love her music. ✌
" Half Breed " and " Dark Lady " are two of Cher`s best songs...And they tell a great story...You both will love those two songs.

If you listen to the studio version, you'll see what I mean. You can just tell by her demeanor while doing this song, she wasn't into it. Well, despite it not being one of her better performances, I still enjoyed watching this reaction video, thanks!
Well, she's straining to get some of those higher notes - her voice isn't at its best here, I'd imagine.
Mainly because this particular song hit too close to home for her. Given that it's amazing she even recorded or performed it.
OMGoodness, you need to see Cher at age ? She did some of her best work in Burlesque.. Type in, "Welcome To Burlesqe". It's amazing!
You can tell she's really singing this. No lip sync
That song is a window into a corner of the past. It really builds an image in your head.
"soda pop" - yep, that is what it was. You will never get this tune out of your mind, by the way.
62, heard this song a bunch of times. I never got all the words.😲
I knew you'd love it! ❤
Cher - You haven't seen the last of me
It makes me cryyyy
Sonny and Cher had a show that was on Friday nights. I was 18. I used to make my boyfriend pick me up after the show finished. Or, he would watch with me. I always watched. Love her music. ✌
Cher is a fantastic storyteller! Here are more… Dark lady, carousel man, half breed and Dixie. She is so good! By the way, you two are really cute.
One of her biggest hits Believe and Turn back time are two of her later songs.
Thanks, Shawn & Mel -- I can only repeat what Michael H. says: "Half Breed" and "Dark Lady" -- story-songs... look forward to more of your reactions..
