I think it would be nearly impossible to do every denomination. But I think we could do most of the mainline denominations

@@TheRemnantRadio well, just the main ones, if you just look at the main theological strands that there are, there are just 6 or 7 (like Baptist, Presbiterian, Lutheran, Methodist, Anglican, Pentecostal and everything in between)
Proud to be an AG member. We are not perfect though but we desire to live according to God's will and according to His Word.

My great great aunt was one of the first A.G. missionaries to Tokyo Japan in the early 1900s. Her name was Esther Kelchner Juergenson. She married the Juergenson's son and is buried there in Tokyo.
My great grandpa(a brother of Esther) was H.B. Kelchner. He wrote the book "Living Your Christian Life Now in the Light of Eternity". He was an evangelist in the 60s early 70s.
And also, my grandparents are retired, yet still working for the church, A.G. pastors for the past 50+ years.

I really do hope the AG begins to fall more in love with theology. I went to their general conference last year, and there was no discussion of doctrine. I pray that begins to change
Seems like they are more interested in pragmatism and whatever fills the seats. I grew up AG and my parents pastor an AG church. So sad to see what is happening in the area they are affiliated with. There is no discernment in relation to doctrine and theology. This is partly what led me to dig deeper and eventually become more reformed and amillennial, though I'm still a continuationist.
@@GabrielMartinez-su8di it's what caused me to leave too. Along with the fact that I've realized that I was raised inside of the prosperity gospel movement, and I have been to so many AG churches in my life. It's gotta be a problem with the system, not just my few churches

Similar story to mine, @@GabrielMartinez-su8di , although I am still premillennial ;-) I strongly disagree with the AG on initial evidence (Fundamental Truth #8) and divine healing (Fundamental Truth #12). If you have to twist Scripture into a pretzel to support your views, it's your views that need to change - not God's Word. I still have hope for the AG, though.. search on RUclips for a sermon by Rick DuBose entitled "Bible Engaged" - sermon starts around the 51-minute mark. I can only hope and pray leaders like Rick prevail in steering the AG to Christian fundamentals.

As an individual who has grown up AG (and still serves and attends today), it's refreshing to hear a little rebuttal in regards to some of the core beliefs that often turn people away from the denomination (such as tongues, and end time beliefs). I ALSO would be curious to see where AG would be today if they changed the verbiage to "a" vs "the". I love AG for a lot of reasons, my only "eh" with them is their thoughts and emphasis on tongues which almost creates or separates the church into the haves and the have-nots. Mature christians and christians who haven't "tapped in to the power yet". I think that emphasis is their biggest flaw and I know a lot of people who have been hurt from this. Other than that, I find myself in agreeing with most of AG's beliefs compared to other denominations.
I would have liked for him to talk about how the founders were mostly ministers ordained in the Church of God in Christ and the reason(s) why they decided to break away from it.

@@ihaveavintageheart that was 100 years ago. AOG is no longer racist, so what would be the point of bringing that up? I'm 66, and grew up in the AOG, not once have I seen any racism in the churches I grew up in or visited. So, at this point in time, it is a moot point. Not saying it was ok back then, it wasn't, but it's not something to get your panties in a bunch over any more.

Thats like saying you can erase slavery from the USA history because you did not experience it and it was a long time ago. To not even mention that AOG was part of the COGIC is leaving out a crucial part of how it even started in the first place.
I’m actually J. Roswell Flowers great, great, grandson, so it’s cool to hear about him from other perspectives.
He actually was used by God to start a magazine and he was the one early A/G leader that opposed the miss use of water baptism using a formula of Jesus name. He understood the Bible and that in Acts Luke was speaking of salvation and not water baptism having to follow a formula. Smart man used of God to stop Satan from ruining the Pentecostal revival. Some still followed the oneness false doctrines.
Thank you for this video. I have been raised AG and even went to SAGU (years back). But hearing about our history again was great. Especially helped hearing about the diversity of each AG church. When looking to be an associate minister in a new church they are vastly different and your talk help give understanding to the diversity of each church.
wow, well said. I grew up baptist/non-denominational, and Ive just started dating a catholic, and I just started attending a non-denominational/first assembly church. So this was very helpful, and I just love learning the history of the church which we never talk about.
Part of what Drew me to the assemblies of God is that I grew up as a Baptist and the Baptist churches. I went to were very big on the Bible. I went to an assembly of God Bible school anyways this is reminding me of some of the history of the Pentecostal movementclass I had in Bible school. Thank you for the review.

I am an Assemblies of God pastor and we have been doing Oktoberfest for 10 years… I’m in Portland Oregon, so that may explain a little bit as well. We have several microbrewery owners at our church and we make root beer specifically for Oktoberfest every year… I love being in the AG
I am also proud to say that, although we are an independent church, our roots and confession of faith comes from the Assemblies of God.

I found it interesting that racial divisions occurred during the early years of Assemblies of God before 1914. After Azusa, The Pentecostal church known as The Church of God in Christ was a interracial group, black and white Christians united together 1907. During the times of racial controversy they split and formed Assemblies of God. Tell the whole story
They won't any documentary about their history they never acknowledge that their denomination was born out of COGIC And it was because they didn't want to be under a black leader
I've never heard of this. I was saved in an Assembly of God. But not currently attending one. I have no problem as a white person attending Church with minorities. But I've seen the Church of God that I attended for years, have churches in the denomination that were all black or Hispanic, But not alot that are of different races. I've never understood why it's that way. It's like segregation in the church.

My mother wanted to make sure I pointed out that I misspoke at the start and said I got a masters at Austin Presbyterian Seminary when really it was a doctorate in historical theology. She doesn’t want to get cheated out of having a doctor son I think. 😂
I was saved in an Assembly of God Church. It was the most awesome day of my life. I was saved in 1979. Have been baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. I grewup in a church that did not believe in the gifts of the Spirit. So I am pentecostal through and through. I don't currently attend one, but have in the past.
There is no evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit it was a language. Get your dog in straight read your Bible Bible all this stuff is gibberish
I was baptized in an Assemblies of God church. It was a Sunday night in January 1998 when they had Sunday evening services. It had Sunday evening services till 2018. I didn’t attend an Assemblies of God church after late 1998.
It is both. Some people in modern times have been given an actual language in tongues and the bystanders usually said it was,praise to God. My spirit talking in tongues that sounds gibberish also occurs. God can do what He wants@@robinchevrier497
I was born and raised in the AG. It’s important to do a large and thorough research of the roots, beginnings and look at the personal lives of the movers and shakers within the movement. You will be shocked. It will take courage to do this, but if you do, it open your eyes, and make you decide if you allegiance is to the LORD or is it to a movement. I was a licensed minister within the AG and had enough schooling to be ordained. Please do your homework. You will know the truth and it will set you free.

the split with the assemblies of God and Church of God came over sanctification, progressive/instantaneous sanctification that was what caused the split, people it is not one or the other it is BOTH.

I know this is a couple years old but I really appreciated this video. I would love to have heard more on the view of women in ministry and how that is playing out in AG right now, especially with female lead pastors/elders
For the last 10-12 years of my 42 as a believer, I've attended AG churches. Invariably my experience has been far less than rewarding. No teaching, none. Simply "prayer and share." It is as though the spirit of Socrates has possessed the place: district sends out "questions for discussion" and the sheep begin bleeting. "Well sister Snodgrass what do you "think/feel" this passage is saying?" My most recent pastor remarked, "well, I stay on a basic level and try not to wander to deeply theologically, because few of the members here are on that level..." Sir, that is what teaching is all about. The "worship" service invariably is a repetition of one or three very simplistic "experience-related" lullabies, sung over and over and over and over again. Yep, I'm outta' here.

I went to Assemblies of God Churches for about 4 years. I don't remember that they were very big on doctrine. I left and eventually went to a Church where the Pastor had been ordained by the Assemblies of God in Canada. They (at that time) had a Bible College inside the Church. (which was handy).
At the first Assemblies of God Church I went to, my "spiritual mother" had gone to Bible College. This must have been around the 1950's as she was kind of elderly. I think she might have had a "call" on her life, but they didn't ordain women in those days (that I know of). She was really pushy. (God bless her). So, instead of ordaining her, they made her a professional "Exhorter." She could do just about everything a Pastor could do, but they just called her something different, so they wouldn't go against the Scripture that says: Women can't TEACH men. (But they can EXHORT, which is basically the same thing). I thought this was a little strange. This was in 1969.
I love my Assemblies of God Church. We have altar calls.
The new AG motto is “we will do whatever it takes to get people in our church.” And entertainment is king.
Some of them have gone back a way like that. I listen to Rodney Howard Browne, whom some if not many Assembly of God have in the past or still do look down upon. But ironically enough, the very things that Rodneys church has probably resembles Azusa street more than most Assembly of God churches have today which is sad. The a/g people to have rotten tomato’s thrown at them (so I heard in the past),for being Pentecostal

Jesus has given me the gift of Teaching and evangelism or evangelist. Through my Baptism of the Holy Spirit. I am Hispanic and Portuguese and speak non of them but English. Yet I do not speak in a language different from English. I do pray in my closest in secret in tongues. Just as scripture says. And not all the time, but as the spirit moves.
Currently I'm converting to Eastern Orthodoxy but i did grow up AG.
I knew all the Azusa stuff but the schism stuff was new to me and pretty interesting! Thanks for the video!
I grew up Methodist, attended an Assembly of God church, for four years at their Bible college in Springfield, then became Greek orthodox for 25 years. We still are, but I just love Rodney Howard Browne on RUclips and Heidi baker. I guess I came full circle and enjoy them all.
I meant to say I went to cbc in Springfield, mo for four years and graduated from there. I think the Azusa street revival is what began this countries 19th and 20th centuries’ religious life..

I like the way the assemblies has the churches set up. In the Church of God, they own the church. You can't pull a local church out of the denomination. Also, the head can appoint your pastor, and unless he does something really sinful you can be stuck with him. The church members don't have much of a say, although their tithes support the church and pay the pastors salary. There is also way to much politics in alot of denominations.
This was a fascinating interview. I grew up in the UPC tradition so I have heard this history but from the other perspective. I now attend a Southern Baptist seminary though my theology is definitely more charismatic than SBC.
I believe in the 16 Fundamentals, except I don't believe that speaking in tongues is the ONLY INITIAL evidence of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. I believe it is AN evidence...When I went to their Church in 1969, I did not speak in tongues, but they let me be water baptized. I don't remember if they asked me or not. I was young, a new Christian, and I didn't understand "Pentecostal stuff" at that time...
Yeah the wording is poor, the ‘only initial’ just means it’s a physical and immediate evidence.

I currently attend am AG church and i grew up in one. I dont live everything about my church or what I've heard about things at the leadership levels above a pastor, however i dont know of a single major problem i know of that would make me want to leave.

I totally agree that if you are a "Pentecostal Church", a Pastor must be filled with the Holy Spirit. If not your church can turn from a Pentecostal Church that has the gift of the Spirit operating, to a non Pentecostal Church.
The sad thing is that you don't have to go all the way into modalism to affirm baptism in Jesus' name. If they had left it there, then we could still have fellowship, but they put themselves outside of orthodoxy and rendered fellowship impossible.

If you really want to push the envelope you should do a podcast with Jay Dyer who used to be a Protestant and became Orthodox. Check out Jay Dyer's video on Protestantism and Evangelicalism Refuted. Not very many Protestants want to talk to Jay Dyer. He's an expert on church history and patristics.

When my AG church split when I was in jr high it was over the pastor’s affair. I’ve also heard of them splitting over the color of carpet.
I didn’t even realize some people didn’t believe in the Trinity until I was much older. And I never saw a trace of Arianism.
“Do all speak in tongues?”.... But we are all called to the Great Commission. We are ministers of God without any ordination of man.

@@nickspitzley8539The passages in I Corinthians passages clearly describes the public gifts of the Spirit and not the initial Baptism. In spite of the insistence of some at least 3 passages indicate tongues as the evidence of that experience. Paul covet to prophesy and forbid not to speak with tongues. It is people like the above commenter who twist the scripture and omit verses that go against their ideas.

We speak of nothing of Evangelism in our assembly. I bring up discipleship. And counting the cost and Sunday school teacher shunned me. They ask me not to bring up the Scripture's that deal with, Jesus saying not everyone who says Lord Lord. They say don't speak of those Scripture's.

4 generation Assembly of God God has been so good to me.
I grew up AG and it was not perfect but the people really loved the Lord; and the music was the best part. But now, like the vast majority of churches of all Protestant denominations all the leadership really care about is growth. Just like you two say the growth is so amazing; but growth is not what is most important in a Church. Following Christ without becoming corrupted by the world is what is most important. Purity, holiness, the fruit of the Spirit is what is most important. In my opinion the AG denomination has lost its way, and is going way into pragmatism. It’s a shame.
So if God in His infinite wisdom and mercy baptizes a person in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues, and that is scriptural and accepted in Pentecostal Churches... then why isn't Water Baptism in the Name of Jesus Christ for the Remission of sins isn't accepted as scriptural when it it clearly recorded in the Book of Acts and is the historical of the Apostles Doctrine? Whether Trinitarians or ONENESS?

The pentecostal movement formed primarily through those that were Jesus onlyist. Although the AG settled as triniterian you can't ignore the same movement lead many to deny the Trinity! Even today the AG list the Trinity as a crucial doctrine but then what are they to say of their UPC tongue speaking Trinity denying brothers? They have the sign of the Spirit according to Pentecostals but then deny the bases of how God has revealed himself? After all, the basis of Jesus being true is his heavenly witness seen clearly in his baptism.
The Bible says there is one baptism. But Pentecostalism teaches two. One with water and one of the Holy Spirit. If the baptism of the Spirit is a secondary event not tied to the water we have two classes of believers and another sacrament. A sacrament is God doing something in us with an outward sign. But as Paul says... One Lord one Spirit and one baptism and elsewhere Paul says we've all been baptized into one Spirit and then goes on to say do all speak in tongues?
That's why the mainline churches weren't having this.

I grew up AG. Im not inherently against them by any means but I will say im more outspoken of how its unbiblical to have dozens of people shouting in tongues.

Can we get a Church of God history?
I never knew what Azusa Street was. But, I kept hearing it mentioned. When I asked, people didn’t know much. So, I prayed and asked God. A few weeks later, I was walking the airport, waiting for my flight, and praying for soldiers waiting to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Then, I saw a black man with a t-shirt that said, “Azusa Street.”
He knew all about it, had studied it. He said that the reason it failed was... outside glory seekers started coming from all over, looking to make names for themselves, and taking the podium to preach... and the Holy Spirit began to appear less and less frequently.
I wonder... are those frauds who restrained the Holy Spirit... the ones this guest said started AoG?

Your mention of the oneness water baptism formula in 1916 shows an early weakness. If only some one there had actually studied the way Luke mentioned salvation way baptism in Jesus name, and spoke up it would have stopped the oneness foolishness at the start.

Education is an execellent power to have, but what about the Anointing? Today's churches don't look for anointing, they want a 25yr old with a Doctorate degree, with 20 years of experience. Then they accept you for a Internship. No thought of God's Anointing anymore!
How about the love of God being the initial evidence for Holy Spirit baptism?
A lot of things we do are pure tradition. I'm not a "Jesus only" type but it is easy to prove that the early church baptized in water in the name of Jesus only. Not our religious formula. And where do we get the idea that to immerse believers in or into the name of the Father, and the name of the Son and the name of the Holy Spirit means to repeat those very words. If I was instructed by the government to register an account in the name of my father, and the name of my mother, and the name of my brother, what would that mean? To fill out the form by repeating those words? To repeat those words to the clerk at the counter? It is not even a logical or proper use of language, but that is what we do. Does it not mean to use their actual names?
Because "baptism" is such a religious tradition word, the only thing we think of is water baptism. The word means to immerse. And immerse does not only mean the religious ritual of the water tank.
Jesus instructed his disciples to immerse those who believe into the name of the Father. Probably meaning immerse them into the name of the family of the Father by new birth through repentance. Immerse them into the fellowship of the death and resurrection of Jesus through water baptism. And also immerse them into fellowship of the Holy Spirit through the baptism of the Holy Spirit. All this is what they did, but never once is there any mention of someone repeating the instructions that were given as a formula over those baptized in water. "In the name of" does not mean something that is said, but the authority by which it is done.

I'm only 30 minutes in but I find it VERY disheartening when for whatever reason people don't tell the FULL HISTORY of the AoG, the good and bad. The Azusa revival occurred in 1906 and the assemblies of God formed in 1914. What happened in between those years? Those white ministers who went on to form the AoG in 1914 were apart of another Pentecostal Holiness group called the Churches of God in Christ lead by a black man Charles Harrison Mason. They were licensed and ordained by this black former slave and sat under his leadership until racial tension in the south caused them to not want to be under a black leader and worship with other black people, that is why the white ministers left he Church of God in Christ and met in Arkansas in 1914 to form a segregated group called the AoG. Charles Mason who had once lead this group traveled to Arkansas and despite the racial division that caused the white ministers to break away from his group he blessed them and their movement and even licensed some more of the white ministers so that they could license more white ministers, because his focus was getting the message of holiness and Pentecostalism out to the world. You can't mention AoG history without mentioning Church of God in Christ and Bishop Charles Mason
