I think ultimately the story meant to tell us that Calus was constantly being played, manipulated and probably abused by the Witness (mainly by appealing to his extreme insecurities). Comparing him to Rhulk, Nezarec, Savathun (who was supposed to be a disciple but had her own agenda) and probably Xivu (I guess she'd be a disciple too?), Calus is spare change and probably more of a tool than an actual ally.

Rhulk was stuck in his pyramid ship due to the curse that Savathun put on him (she cursed his ship with Light which forbade him from leaving). Calus was busy with his fascination with the dark, and it was during that time in which he likely wasn't ready to reveal himself just yet. Eramis was doing the whole scavenger hunt for the Witness to collect all the pieces of Nezarec, who was dead for a long time, up until recently. That leaves Savathun and Xivu Arath left. Savathun obviously betrayed the Witness because she had her own ideas, and as for Xivu Arath, I'm not 100% on whether or not she is a disciple yet. maybe she will be anointed next DLC? My lore isn't the best, which is why i'm gonna go read up on this, especially since i didn't play season of the hunt or plunder.

The reason calus was probably chosen first was because the witness could control him easily, while eramis was conflicted by the resurrection of praksis as a scorn and Xivu Arath wanted to destroy the traveller (as far as I know) while the witness wanted to do whatever that portal thing was at the end of the campaign, so it probably felt like she couldn’t be trusted as well
I believe that the Disciples are a group of generals from different races. Some will be from what we know(Xivu Arath of the Hive, Calus of the Cabal, Eramis/Fikrul of the Eliskni/Scorn), but there will be some who are not of these species, like Rhulk.

Last Wish has Riven taunting us, Deepstone has the Clovis Bray AI and Vow has Rhulk. Meanwhile you got Shattered Throne with Riven sometimes, Prophecy with Drifter, Eris and Orin at the start and end. Duality has Eris and memories of Claus and Spire has Osiris (the real one this time) for dungeons.

@@urifrid6767 Haha I just read a ton of lore and I gotta say next to the witness, the winnower and the gardener, rhulk is the most powerful opponent we as guardians have ever faced to this point. He is a gigachad and we haven’t killed him. In the raid he uses stasis branches to cover himself to heal when he is defeated, we never beat him. The last opponent that was uber powerful was savathun and rhulk is entire orders of magnitudes stronger than savuthun and oryx. I fully expect to see him return at some point.

Rhulk is a better villain than Ghaul or Eramis. Both had entire campaigns to themselves. Yet Rhulk was only present in a raid / a repeatable mission and a few lore tabs. Heck he’s better than Calus, imo. Obviously Oryx and Savathun are leagues ahead

He was kind of a disciple, he worked to fulfill the darkness' agenda through the sword logic but wasn't directly subservient. He did his own thing mostly but still "communed with the deep."
He wasn't a disciple because he didn't reach the same understanding that Rhulk and calus did. The witness used him as a tool instead of a subordinate, letting his hive destroy civilizations in the name of the darkness but never trusting him. That's why Rhulk was always in savathuns throne world, to hold the leash
Rhulk is just a fraction of what the Witness is capable of, and I don’t want it to be an immediate boss fight. I want dialogue, cutscenes, and I want to learn what he wants. Does he want destruction? Domination? What does he mean when he says “Salvation”?
Working on another video about all that. I’ve tried farming for dialogue during his encounter and it’s been incredibly difficult getting all his dialogue. It simply wasn’t feasible for this video. This just includes all his main dialogue throughout the raid and preservation.
The darkness trails remind me of siva tbh, imagine darkness infused siva that actually has a will of its own that'd be cool, and instead of the red and black it's that weird orange darkness color and black

The way I see it: The Upended can only be wielded by one who is worthy, otherwise anyone trying to use it would be destroyed, hence why it is a privilege. Rhulk no doubt takes a lot of pride in the fact that he himself was worthy.
He imploded it using resonance energy, the orange power he, nezarec, and the witness use, on the tech that harvests power from the sun. He only destroyed the blue sun though.
