It's so weird, at points like 7:53 you can hear what I think is the guardian theme literally battling against the darkness/pyramid theme for control over the music. Very cool
One great example of this was back during wrath of the machine. The iron lord theme would play during the dps, before having the siva theme come back when he did his map wipe thing.
Yeah, last wish, and deepstones final encounter tracks do it too it goes all the way back to Kings Fall, it's one of my favorite motifs that I've noticed
I've never played D1 but I've heard it was like the same thing when you fought against Aksis. The trumpets overpowering other instruments in the music resembles Guardians overpowering the enemy. If that is the case then that's some good music
i love that savathûn’s song is underneath the triumphant ending; i think it points towards her coming back and being an ally soon. it also kind of gives her props; she has always known guardians are the most lethal thing out there and having them discover the pyramid was a good way for her to clear out its presence in her throne world
also: love how the guardian leitmotif and the darkness leitmotif sort of fight each other before the guardian theme really starts to dominate. i love how bungie let’s music reflect what’s going on, they like to have the darkness theme dominate other leitmotifs, and that’s how this one starts, but i absolutely love how it just turns around and becomes this triumphant victory theme. such a good track.
Really? That's what points towards her being an ally soon? You don't think that motif just means she hated Rhuk and is Victorious after death through us?
@@roberttheronin9803 her ghost still lives so the chances of her revival are high and after learning of her betrayal at the hands of the darkness if she does return I doubt she would want to be neutral anymore
The best raid boss in destiny imo. Perfect boss entrance, a new and unique look for a raid boss, a badass damage phase animation, an entirely unique raid boss damage phase where you have to move around instead of grouping up, and of the course the amazing music. 10/10
From a music theory standpoint this is a fucking masterpiece. The dueling “guardian theme” and “Rhulk theme” slowly tilting to the light as the song progresses is absolutely insane.
Welp, I may have spent 45 straight hours of my life trying to beat this guy on contest mode with nothing to show for it, but at least I can say this raid is some of the best content we've seen in years. This music just takes this experience to a whole new level. Easily on par with, if not better, than the badassery of Riven's theme, with a style and thematic substance so much more than any other theme we've had since Regicide. I cannot wait to see what Bungie does next, nor what they do in Lightfall to top this experience.
Multiple disciples at one time during the witness fight 100%. Maybe even savathun will get involved to end the witness after learning of what he done to her and since she’s not dead could still work
We're in the same boat man. First 3 encounters took my team around 7-8 hours, and then we spent around ten more on Rhulk before we started arguing and broke up. I proceeded to do the fight for another 30 hours straight with little to no breaks and have nothing to show for it. It's completely fine though because I had a great time playing this masterpiece of a raid.
In the game Kenshi, there’s a character called Beep, a scrawny insect-like being called a hiver who dreams of being the mightiest warrior in the land. Thing is, Rhulk really just looks like a supremely-beefed up Beep, so I like to think that Rhulk is Beep after embracing the Darkness and becoming a being of pure dominance.
Genuinely one of the best raid boss themes since Aksis, if not the best. Really looking forward to hearing more of what they do with the darkness motif
This is on par with rivens theme. The way the darkness theme creeps in during the very start as rhulk reveals himself was enough to put it just as good. Along with the guardian motif playing as we damage rhulk and he is on his frenzy stage hunting us down
From exploring the Vault of Glass to going head to head with the disciple of one of the most powerful beings in the universe, capable of slaying beast of legends like the Leviathan or the Worm gods with a mere thought... We have come a long way!
I fucking love rhulk's voice too. He is incredibly sinister beyond any other villain we've faced so far.. the only thing that tops him for that... Is the witness. Hearing them speak in their many voices... I got massive chills when they spoke.
If you think about it, it's actually 4 races: 1. Hive at first (and maybe hive worm-scorn combination for Caretaker) 2. Scorn 3. Taken 4. Rhulk himself as Lubraean
@@tompramanaaccount8892 hive are rarely counted but if you want to be that technical about it sure. rhulk is also one enemy and not really a “minor” consistent enemy so he’s rarely counted as well. I think OP meant like main presented races, sort of like KF with hive and taken being the main focus at all times despite if there were say cabal at the beginning. (i know there arent)
It’s especially more epic when Rhulk is walking towards me intimidatingly and I’m just there in the Well of Radiance with my Izzy just going “Bring it daddy longlegs!”
Even a year later, just under halfway into Lightfall, this still takes the cake as the most menacing theme and boss fight I think we've been up against as Guardians
The most dangerous mission that we, the guardian, have ever been on. Venturing into the madness itself and fighting a culmination of evil, only to find out there’s many of them just like him out there. The power we face at the hands of Rhulk is but a fraction of what the witness is capable of. This track not only shows the malice we face against, but of things to come. The witness is returning, and we need to prepare for dangers unimaginably greater than Rhulk.
@@joemonkey18 Neither the traveler nor the Black Fleet are the causal forces. They’re vessels, and now knowing that the black fleet wasn’t born from darkness, but from the witness using darkness; it’s very likely there’s something out there pulling the strings for the traveler that isn’t the light itself.
eh it took 6 guardians to kill him, and like Ikora says in the post-raid cutscene, we barely even achieved that. if every pyramid has a disciple of similar strength, we're fucked
I can't help but feel overwhelmed by just how DEFIANT the damage phase part sounds. You go from fending off hordes of the Witnesses' troops and playing Rhulks games, to going face-to-face with him and showing him how Guardians face the worst threats to Humanity! I come back to this song a lot to relive my memories of doing this raid for the first time with my friends; learning callouts (at least our dipshit callouts) and how the different encounters worked, making jokes that we continue with, and just enjoying what we're doing. I'm happy that I got to enjoy this game when I could, I wish I had the money to get the expansions to keep up with it all.
This boss is an incredible feat of Destiny game design. So many times i feel like my team and I are pumping dps into a wall that doesnt even fight back. In a game, the enemy should act like an enemy and fight you. Rhulk really makes you feel like he wants you dead, from trying to wipe you at the start of the encounter, his menacing approach, constant lasers, his glaive strikes, and his signature kick. The boss is actually fighting us for once, and we aren’t just shooting at a wall with a health bar. It feels great, and the ost just makes it feel better. From the first 3 notes you already know this guy means business and isnt afraid to get his hands dirty.
You know, when you fight the Traitor/Ruin of Lubrae, all I can think of is when you hear the choir is the voice of untold billions massacred calling out for revenge.
I always thought that was fitting. Plus a note to make to? This is one of the few Raid Bosses where it feels like instead of us being intimidated by them? We make them realize just how DANGEROUS we really are.

I LOVED the soundtrack of the final boss. Those undertones of the Darkness, of Savathun's song, all finally coming together. Thanks for posting this, going to listen to it for hours. Also Rhulk is a fantastic raid boss, design is impeccable.
So basically the raid is running around, dunking whilst a dissapointed father looks at you, and THEN you have to duke it out with disappointed father until he does a chestburster on you and dies. Amazing raid, music fits really well, 10/10 would avoid being stomped on.
Just a note, that giant bone in the first encounter room belongs to the Leviathan from Fundament. It was keeping the worm gods prisoner until Rhulk came along and tore that rib out of it and assumedly killed it with it. And we killed him. Just thought I'd put that out there.
I think the Leviathan is killed by the worm gods in the battle for one of the moons of Fundament, when the sisters were hunting for Taox? i haven't read the lore in a while so i could be spouting nonsense~ but yeah, definitely shows how powerful we can be! with the power of friendship~
@@herewegogain6411 If you’re going off the Books of Sorrow, we already know that they’re unreliable. Up until this season, we fully believed (according to the lore at least) that Fundament was going to be destroyed because of the great wave, but now we know that it was all a lie told by the darkness to keep the Traveler from getting to the Krill.
The books of sorrow said that part, and the books of sorrow have some lies in them. Rhulk’s lore has no reason to lie, and it also seems like he didn’t kill the Leviathan
Rhulk injured it to the point it couldn't do anything he didn't kill it the hive put the last nail in the coffin to its death which explains why it didn't stop the three sisters from freeing the worm gods.
I love the motif of Rhulk's theme and the Guardian's theme constantly battling back and forth throughout this OST, sprinkled with the ever amazing Pyramid leitmotif that pokes its way through so many different scores.
Just the fact that you get a raid boss where it isn’t “ok get in the div b*tch’s well so we can div and burn him” was so refreshing…. It was move or get bodied until final stand and I loved every second of it.
Then we proceed to (figuratively) dunk Rhulk's head in the deep while he believed he could just hold his breath for however long he wanted. It's like an olympian swimmer just kinda floating in the water until he gets drowned by a bunch of crayon eaters, edgelords, and nerds.
The intro and darkness theme throughout sends me to lower depths. Absolutely love the dread it brings to this theme. They did a fantastoc job on music and the raid. Glad I got to do this day 1
After almost 3 years I finally was able to fight Rhulk yesterday, mind you he wasn't very hard to kill. But this music, the setting, the raid up until that point was unforgettable. This may be my new favorite raid.
I used to be a COD guy, but eventually I had enough with the franchise. I made Destiny 2 my new main game. I started playing fully a little after Beyond Light came out. Witch Queen was the first expansion I pre-ordered and played on launch day. Vow Of The Disciple was my first new and original raid on this game, and I must say that the Rhulk boss fight was an epic experience, mostly because everyone seemed to be loving it as much as me as they weren't going on about it being similar to boss fights I haven't experienced before. It felt new not just to me, but to everyone else.
Genuinely the best raid I’ve ever played, Vow of the Disciple is leagues better than Wrath of the Machine ever was, despite its size of course. And this raid has to have the best soundtrack BY FAR, everything about it seems so elegant and terrifying, like the Darkness is persuading us to give in but we as Guardians know it only leads in an endless abyss. Truly the best music I’ve heard in Destiny 2 in a while, can’t wait to see what they do in Lightfall.
I absolutely ADORE how much this theme highlights the imposing nature of Rhulk and his boss: Being this brand new enemy with awe-inspiring power and the track conveys this dreadful and villainous vibe, then when the damage starts it hypes you up with the triumphant guardian theme while mixing Rhulks villainous theme, clashing and making a sick ass theme (I fucking love destiny's music)
I absolutely adore the clash of music it’s just so perfect, to the damage phase start with the amp of guardian music makes you really feel like a guardian fighting evil, back to the darkness music at the end of damage phase putting you back into a serious trance of battling to get back to damage! This is just a perfect circle of light triumphing over the darkness yet again
Bro bungie nailed the "Darkness" soundtracks Like the beyond light main theme just embedded goosebumps all over my body the first time i encountered him
Beyond light theme is a more prevalent Darkness motif, now the Darkness motif here is much more violent and domineering in the beginning signaling "alright no more of this mysterious bullshit im going to fuck you up"
Man u have no idea how much i wanted this one back, grats on the copyright claim being taken down and on the videos restored, your work is trully amazing, keep at it!!
That’s also the reason he’s in savathuns throne world in the first place. I might be wrong but in the lore The Witness gave him a job to take in a species on a world but failed and gone extinct. So rhulk thinks his punishment is being in her throne world

If that is the case then that's some good music
its actually so sick. its a great subtle representation of the light fending off the forces of Darkness. Such as Rhulk
@@linkofdoom24 We also had The Guardian' theme there, super fucking cool.
i love that savathûn’s song is underneath the triumphant ending; i think it points towards her coming back and being an ally soon. it also kind of gives her props; she has always known guardians are the most lethal thing out there and having them discover the pyramid was a good way for her to clear out its presence in her throne world
also: love how the guardian leitmotif and the darkness leitmotif sort of fight each other before the guardian theme really starts to dominate. i love how bungie let’s music reflect what’s going on, they like to have the darkness theme dominate other leitmotifs, and that’s how this one starts, but i absolutely love how it just turns around and becomes this triumphant victory theme. such a good track.
There's countless number of motifs. It's my favorite part about the music in these games.
Really? That's what points towards her being an ally soon? You don't think that motif just means she hated Rhuk and is Victorious after death through us?

The best raid boss in destiny imo. Perfect boss entrance, a new and unique look for a raid boss, a badass damage phase animation, an entirely unique raid boss damage phase where you have to move around instead of grouping up, and of the course the amazing music. 10/10
9/10 for me i wish he was a little more faster {Not like lighting fast} but overall yeah is extreamly fun to fight.

LET US DROWN IN THE DEEP ONCE MORE
Rhulk was on some bullshit with "you will drown in the Deep" until we waterboarded the fuck out of him into the Deep
Same
Multiple disciples at one time during the witness fight 100%.
Hey, aleast u got an emblem which no body cares about lol and nobody know whats it means
valiant effort guardian, kingsfall is yours in a few seasons
In the game Kenshi, there’s a character called Beep, a scrawny insect-like being called a hiver who dreams of being the mightiest warrior in the land. Thing is, Rhulk really just looks like a supremely-beefed up Beep, so I like to think that Rhulk is Beep after embracing the Darkness and becoming a being of pure dominance.
“You have served your purpose. Now all that awaits you is death. The darkness beyond your days.”
“What?”
“I mean, beep!”
“BEEP IS NOW HERALD OF THE DARKNESS! THERE WILL BE CHANGES!”
oh my god he does
Genuinely one of the best raid boss themes since Aksis, if not the best. Really looking forward to hearing more of what they do with the darkness motif
Don’t forget riven and shaniks’s themes their great
I gotta mention Riven, that theme was sheer perfection with the setting and mood of that fight
This is on par with rivens theme. The way the darkness theme creeps in during the very start as rhulk reveals himself was enough to put it just as good. Along with the guardian motif playing as we damage rhulk and he is on his frenzy stage hunting us down
Finally someone recognizes how good eyes up was.

What I loved about this Raid was that there were two enemy types the teams had to face instead of a one enemy-based raid.
If you think about it, it's actually 4 races:
1. Hive at first (and maybe hive worm-scorn combination for Caretaker)
2. Scorn
3. Taken
4. Rhulk himself as Lubraean
@@tompramanaaccount8892 hive are rarely counted but if you want to be that technical about it sure. rhulk is also one enemy and not really a “minor” consistent enemy so he’s rarely counted as well. I actually truly believe getting to third DPS phase and hearing 8:37 is the hypest moment this entire game can possibly offer
A song in a game hasn't given my a boost in ages. Props to Bungie.
It’s especially more epic when Rhulk is walking towards me intimidatingly and I’m just there in the Well of Radiance with my Izzy just going “Bring it daddy longlegs!”
It is definitely more fun to 3-phase him rather than mash it just to get the final 1/3 bar music.
This track is straight metal. Very close to the final shape.
I wonder, oh Guardian mine. What will remain after your Light is winnowed?
32 clears on Vow and I still agree with this statement. Getting to DPS3/Final Stand is pure serotonin.
Even a year later, just under halfway into Lightfall, this still takes the cake as the most menacing theme and boss fight I think we've been up against as Guardians
I learned from Nezarec that menacing themes has their own distinct ways of nuance.
This exceeds the OST version, thank you so much
The OST one is his main leitmotif.

Man. Things were so intense in this raid. Where was darkness like this in light fall.
Rhulk felt like a genuine final boss, but calus was lacking and the witness was just kinda there
the fact that we can kill wielders of darkness speaks volumes of how powerful guardians can be. we killed gods before but nothing like this.

8:36 this part makes me want to learn how to play French Horn JUST so I can play this around my house to announce that its DPS phase to my family.
I honestly believe Rhulk was the peak of raids in destiny history.

Just a note, that giant bone in the first encounter room belongs to the Leviathan from Fundament. It was keeping the worm gods prisoner until Rhulk came along and tore that rib out of it and assumedly killed it with it. And we killed him. Just thought I'd put that out there.
No wonder he one shots us
I think the Leviathan is killed by the worm gods in the battle for one of the moons of Fundament, when the sisters were hunting for Taox? i haven't read the lore in a while so i could be spouting nonsense~ but yeah, definitely shows how powerful we can be! with the power of friendship~
