Sydney issues spider warning: Funnel-web’s emerge after heavy rainfall

- Sydney residents have been issued a new spider warning after flooding across New South Wales is expected to cause funnel webs to come out of hiding in search of higher ground.
Australian Reptile Park Head of Reptiles and Spiders Dan Rumsey said the rain and warm weather would “flush” funnel web spiders out in search of safer conditions.
“They’re potentially one of the most dangerous spiders on the planet not just here in Australia," he said.
Mr Rumsey pointed out while no one had been killed in Australia by a funnel web in a very long time, it was important to be vigilant.
Say what you will about America, we've never had a freaking spider warning.

I know exactly how a red back looks like, because once stoped at a petrol station to fill up and lucky I saw it - with the huge red mark on its back- sitting right on the handle of the pump... since then I have been careful checking handles and surrounding area of the pumps every time ...
I called the assistant and they were taking photos and making people aware... just in case ...

I remember my dad catching one in our garage when I was young.
He used his shoe a ushered it into a glass coffee jar to give to his friend for milking.
I was scared of these spiders until that day. Dad taught me they shouldn't be feared but respected and if you're unsure of what spider it is just stay away from it.
It was interesting seeing it up close in the jar of course hehehe

Sounds awesome. I'm Australian and I enjoy observing the local wildlife (large and small.) Many great little creatures here. I'm currently keeping a bull ant (likely a queen) as a pet.
When I was living in Sydney, I encounted a funnel web in my bathroom. I went to get a broom to chase it out. But the damn thing raised itself up on his back feet and stood it ground. That’s it !! I was done I ran out!!’ And got the help of a neighbour 😱 lol
My neighbor was able to get the spider outside. I hate spiders, he got a bottle of Jack Daniels for his efforts🤣

I’m an arachnologist and herpetologist, and this video made me smile.

Australia’s wildlife isn’t quite as dangerous as it is different. Life evolved there isolated from the rest of the world. South America use to have some of the same animals but they went extinct when introduced to things like big cats, canines and bears

@@charlalar14 Well I absolutely love my country (I live in a small historic village in the English countryside), and would not want to live in Australia or anywhere else. If you are so miserable and dislike the country as a whole then that’s on you - it does not mean that the United Kingdom is in any way a “dump”. The points you raise are also inaccurate:
1. “Spiders or knife crime” - The United Kingdom is one of the safest nations in the world (check the homicide rates per country for example); if you want to compare it with Australia, the UK has only 0.31 more murders *per 100,000 people* each year (using 2018 figures) - to put that into perspective the US had over 4 times more murders, *per 100,000 people*, than the UK during the same time period.
2. “Boris Johnson” - if you don’t like your Prime Minister you’re luckily enough to be able to change him.
3. “Open borders” - countries with highest number of immigrants against population (2019):
- 1st. UAE
- 2nd. Saudi Arabia
- 3rd. Switzerland
- 4th. Australia
- 5th. Canada
- 6th. Austria
- 7th. United States
- 8th. United Kingdom (13%)
Just so you know Australia has a higher immigrant population than the UK (if that’s something you dislike). In my opinion I would much rather have hardworking people in this country from outside the UK, than people like you who come across as the perpetual victim and (seemingly) love to complain.
4. “Too many people” - If you didn’t know around 1% of the UK is built upon (2.3% for England specifically) in terms of: roads, buildings, railway tracks, quarries etc. The figure rises to 8% (12.6% for England specifically) if we include ‘natural’ areas that are not entirely natural: parks, sports fields, man-made waterways, gardens, golf courses etc. So there is plenty of space, plus if it’s space that you crave so highly, you do realise the countryside exists right?
5. “Miserable weather most of the time” - of course Australian weather is a completely different entity to weather in the United Kingdom, but it very much depends on ‘where’ you live within the country and ‘what’ you prefer. For example I live in Suffolk (which is Eastern England), and our weather is very much similar to our neighbours in the East (the Netherlands, Belgium and Northern-most France) - I have no complaints. The weather in the majority of England at least, is extremely mild and therefore very rarely ‘too’ hot or ‘too’ cold (which I greatly appreciate). I never found the rain to be much of a problem outside the winter months either (and the rain we do get ensures our beautiful countryside retains its characteristic lush green), and blue skies (outside of winter) I find perfectly fine where I live/ have lived. I do not think I’d survive Australian summers that’s for sure.
Just thought I’d share my opinion with you. I understand that we all like different things, for example my passion is history and therefore I love living in England (I am able to explore beautiful historic villages, market towns, smaller cities, castles, grand medieval cathedrals, stately homes that range from the Baroque to Elizabethan, manor houses, churches, ancient monuments from the Neolithic to Roman etc etc etc)... perhaps you love other things and think Australia is the place for you? Maybe so, my point is that there’s absolutely no need to degrade your own country in the process - we have so much to be proud of!

Where I live, we've had some rain but no flooding, none of the bushfires, and while we have venomous snakes and even jellyfish, we aren't troubled by Funnelweb spiders.

I live in Melbourne and, whilst I’ve been to NSW a few times and my brother lives in Sydney, I could never live there because of the funnel webs. It’s their “thickness,” their blackness, the way they rear up (as shown here) as well as their lethality.
Where I am, the main problem spider spider is the huntsman. They are not lethal, but they are bigger and more hairy than the funnel web. They’ll come into your house several times a year. You’ll see something dark out of the corner of your eye on the ceiling or the wall. Sometimes you then have to walk under it in order to get something to use to deal with it, and you always run, in case it drops on to you, but you don’t want to run too fast for fear that you create some sort of “wind” that blows it down onto you. Sometimes the spider stays in the one spot for days, and you can’t reach it to kill it. Or you go to sleep and the next morning it’s gone - it’s moved, and could be anywhere in the house. This happened to me about six weeks ago. It was originally in the hallway, it moved, then I was in the bathroom (at the toilet actually) and all of a sudden it turned the corner and was moving at a great pace towards me. I had it cornered, so I “dealt with it.”
Another huntsman story would be the time I was driving and suddenly there was a huntsman crawling across my windscreen, right in front of me. At least it’s on the outside, I thought, until I realised it wasn’t.......I remember pulling the car over and jumping out of it, fast. I do not remember what happened after I got out - I must have got someone on the street to get rid of it, but, as I said, no memory. The huntsman spider usually comes in when there has been a lot of rain (which I think is what has happened with the funnel webs and the floods - funnel webs like moist, not wet, conditions) or a run of very hot days.
The other potentially lethal spider which I think is lethal to Australia is the redback. I have come across these on three occasions. They can can usually be identified by their eggs, so that even if you don’t see the distinctive markings of the adult, you still know it’s a redback nest. The last one I found was in a corner of my garage, a typical place to find them. There is an antivenene for a redback bite, as there is for the funnel web, although as is mentioned in this video, they are low on it (and they want people to catch them so they can be milked - there is no way I would try to catch a funnel web).
I think the final significant spider experience happened about six months ago when I was tidying up around the house and I noticed a cobweb top right of my front door. I put my cobweb broom up to brush it away, but as soon as I touched it, hundreds/thousands(?) of tiny baby spiders poured out, crawling down the side of the door, along the top of it, under the eaves, over onto the windows to the right, in other words, everywhere. The spiders were white. There was no adult visible. Naturally, I didn’t go inside the front door, I went in through the back. The only other spiders we have are daddy long legs, but I think most countries have them.
Anyway, when it becomes possible, consider visiting Australia. The arachnids are a little problematic, but most of the people are not.
Never met a Funnel Web and hope i never do. But just last year we went to Ikea and a Huntsman spider had entered our car. Realized it was on our speedometer while in the middle of traffic. We obviously froze, not knowing what to do. All the kids in the car unaware. I whispered to my hubby to keep moving for fear of it running under the seats if we tried to get it out. He did. Thank God we reached home safe and all got out of the car. Then he got it out using a long stick. Scariest day ever. Not to mention our kids find Redback spiders in the backyard everytime. Australia is riddled with these things. Am so glad i don't get to deal with crocs because i couldn't.

In Tassie we come across Whitetails inside a bit too often. Unfortunately since they are smaller they can be hard to tell apart from normal house spiders. I once pulled one of my pocket, I was fine but it has left me jumpy around spiders

Learned that one the hard way, smack big spider=hundreds of tiny spiders running in all directions, I about died.
On a side note, planting mint tends to deter them.
The mint oil irritates their pedipalps.
And I would literally burn my house down if that many spiders where in it/on it.

Australia: friendly people, beautiful beaches, wonderful food and awesome scenery you will totally miss when you check into your hotel room, find a Huntsman hanging out on your wall and immediately go back home.
Try getting picked up from the airport in Sydney on your first ever visit by a mate that lives over there, and have a Huntsman crawl out from under your leg, round the top of the car right in front of the drivers face...all while you are on the highway. No thanks. Not even in the country an hour lol.

I once had a Huntsman egg sac, on the ceiling above my bed. One morning I awoke to tens of thousands of baby spiders crawling all over the ceiling! It was awesome!!! They dissappeard very quickly throughout the day.
