My family doesn't do funerals. We have an explicit deathbed to furnace policy, even with children. It's just how we cope. My dad's side was always into the days long process of open casket visitation, followed by a long funeral and then an equally long graveside service followed by an awkward party and days of well meaning church ladies stopping by with enough casseroles to fill a deep freeze. It was always a week of torture, constant crying and bins full of uses tissues. With my mom's family, direct cremation made the grieving process so much less painful. It's like ripping off a bandaid. They are gone. No amount of staring at them in a box wearing clothes they wouldn't have been caught dead in and painted up like a clown, no amount of prayers, flowers and playing Amazing Grace are going to bring them back. For me, not having my last memory of them lying in a coffin helps me better remember their life. We tend to recover and move on much faster than when we are forced to sit through the funeral process. That being said, my friends and family have explicit instructions to play "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" a as I'm being loaded into the meatwagon! I'm serious about this.
I'm so with you - I'm not into funerals and services and have decided that if anyone in my family dies, I'm donating their bodies to the body farm. Let their deaths be meaningful, instead of pointless.

I had a cassette tape of my mom and her brother when they had their piano bar band and my uncle played the piano while she sang what are now standards from the 70s. So I played that at my mother's memorial service. So mom got to sing at her own funeral, and her brother who didn't attend was able to play for her. It was a good service.

Sadly, popcorn only pops at a specific temperature and the retort where they cremate you is way too hot. The kernels would turn to Ash before they could pop. It's a great mental image though
