For their disastrous video which was originally named “why you’re wrong about hookless wheels” and was basically an undeclared advert for Zipp, they got such a backlash that they changed the name of the video to “the pros and cons of hookless” (or something like that) and in the process, they lost a lot of trust from their viewers. This isn’t going to help with the perception that, when money talks, morals walk.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. While there are similarities in the systems there are also some distinct differences. In the Elite version one of the ratchet rings is fixed while in the other system all the ratchet parts are floating. The Elite version also uses a system similar to what Chris king has to pull the ratchet rings together under torque.
In China...Patents are not really a thing that they pay attention to. So this could indeed be infringement but hard to prove. Hopefully they are able to license it from the other company if they are in for it.
They absolutely do. They have a complete industry around copying European and US patents. When they have the Chinese patent they have all the power to challenge European/US companies, because they have the other half, that is 2bn people, of the market in their pocket.
Being a guy who’s developing a fitness recovery tool, this stuff is hard. Really really really hard! Patents are the death of dreams and they’re unbelievably difficult to navigate. Especially when Chinese companies get involved.
After riding on a dtswiss ratchet system, not one time have I thought "a complete hub re-design would do these wheels much better." Even Elite's regular Drive hubs are awesome. My friend got some helix in and on the first descent the hub began to seize because of the weird spring interfacing with the double ratchets. We also noticed that the double ratchet slows you waaaaayyy down and quickly. I ride elite drive 40D and I wouldnt trade them for anything. They're incredible. I think elite tried to inovate to much, too quickly.
True. But companies need to come up with stuff to advertise even though it may be a total gimmick. As long there is something to publish on the website, social media, and talked about, it is an accomplishment for the companies. Otherwise, you keep cooking the same food. Wavey Helix wheels is another example to this. I don't believe them, but they are cool and eye-catching.
Sooo, when can we expect a new video about budget Road cycling? Chinese groupsets? Great budget hacks? That would be interesting to see! Let's leave GCN to do their thing, they are obviously more a commercial player and that's ok. I watch this channel for the more down-to-earth content.
Patent pending gives zero legal rights to attempt to exclude someone from making, using or selling something you claim in the patent. A pending patent, at least in the US, gives zero legal standing to sue someone.
I think the issue here it, even if it’s patented, does it truly matter? Most buyers buying this wheel, wouldn’t even bother buying from qvist anyway. Qvist wouldn’t gain a single sale from pushing this. And paying to license it, would only drive up the cost of the wheel. Would the customer base would buy elite wheel, continue buying it if it went up past a certain point? No. So it makes 0 sense to license it
This may not be common knowledge except in some theoretical physics circles, but due to a yet to be understood glitch in the space-time continuum, no patent covers the territory of the People's Republic of China. Scientists' minds are confounded!
Chinese Bike industry are huge……. I’m not surprise they will take over the main stream brand as most of bike are made in China @ Taiwan…… European bila company cannot afford to make their bike in europe as the cost is high. The quality of chinese made bike is top notch … if not better!!
? Chinese companies don't have to adhere to US patent laws. only if they sell directly in the US. Hell, the Chinese gov' actively helps companies steal designs, trade secrets, etc.
The elite wheels that have lasted me through a year of abuse in audexes and some fast group rides would beg to disagree. A patent does not mean companies can't copy it. It only gives you a chair in the courtroom.

I noticed Drive wheels aren't being so prominently featured at GCN recently
Man, GCN can't catch a break.
Oh no, poor multi billion dollar Warner Brothers 😢
Not from GCN wannabes in any case.

The entire patent system is a racket. Needs to be overhauled and too many designs get patents that should not
Alex and ollie's colnago bikes were fitted with reynolds and vision wheels on their last race, if that isn't telling you something
That they got paid by someone else.
Just put a good honest DT Swiss 240 hub in there and start selling. Love the shape.

Most GCN videos are just 10 minute glorified ads and you could get the same information by reading the short press release about the product.
Did they register the patent in China also?
I have a set of Elite 50D. I like mine a lot. Patent disputes happen all the time. Maybe you should wait until it's resolved.
Sounds like the original company only have a German patent and didn’t take time to patent elsewhere 🤷♂️

Imagine you inventing something that tastes better than coke and coke steals your recipe tomorrow. This would be your narrative
Somebody steals something from you and then they say: but you weren't using it anyways!
Your explanation is a joke. If you license it, elite will pay. Simple as that. But you must be Santa Claus giving away your inventions for free.
