I Tried Installing Solar On My Van

  • I’ve returned from my first campervan trip in Scotland and it’s now time for me to install solar on my campervan. While on my first vanlife UK trip, I realised a few things about my van and before my next Scotland road trip, I’d like to make some improvements to my campervan conversion to make it more comfortable for my vanlife needs.
In this video, I will be installing a flexible solar panel onto the roof of my campervan. I explain why I have chosen a flexible solar panel over a monocrystalline solar panel and also explain the process of how I will bring the solar wiring inside the van.

Hi Ruth. I see that you are finally trying an off-grid system! I am a little disappointed that you were not able to use all of the roof space, although it would have been a good compromise with the amount of power generated. Hopefully you will be able to get the amount of power you need.🤩

Interesting video Ruth but I think you should fuse the solar line and put it through a charge controller. I have the same solar array on my boat and it gives out about 22 v
up to 6 a which the controller steps down to 14.4 v. I bought a cheap PWM controller from ebay for £7.

I would strongly recommed an MPPT controller and in line fuses to get the best from your solar and to avoid damaging your battery or starting a fire. They are really easy to fit and my only problem was the lack of space in my battery compartment.
Our 120W panel kept us going for 6 days on the Isle of Lewis in May a few years ago with no other charging as the engine charging hadn't been connected at the time. To be fair we only used it to have a few LED lights on, power the water pump and very occasionally run an Android tablet and the sun came up at about 3am and set at about 11pm.

    • @ruthaisling

I'm curious..... why do you need solar in a van?
I've lived in vans or cars with a quick pitch tent on & off for twenty years & never needed it.
I find an average size battery (normally a second hand one) & plugged into my ignition fed cigarette lighter socket works fine.
I must admit i don't bother with a fridge anymore as they were more trouble than they're worth & all i need to do is charge my phone, drone, laptop etc.
Its strange in a age where burning energy is bad we're we're all obsessed with doing nothing but, lol.
I've wasted so much money on unnecessary van stuff over 20years is embarrassing 😊.

I work online so need to constantly be charging my laptop which drains the batteries!
