    I realised after filming this video, it’s called an arca swiss plate and not an arc swiss plate, oops!
    Let me know in the comments below which thumbnail design in your favourite.👇

    While I am not a RUclipsr or videographer, I still find behind-the-scenes and how-to videos really interesting. I did a few marketing videos for my previous employer after taking a course and that gave me some insight into the process and a HUGE amount of respect for those who put together such thoughtful and beautifully shot videos like yours, Ruth. It's not as easy as people think! I had an equine photography business for over 20 years and always used Sony cameras, too. :)

      It was a lot of work but a lot of fun, too. I started out with my grandfather's old Miranda camera (100% manual and heavy...no plastic parts in that camera) and moved onto Sonys later purely for the reason that the lenses I had already invested in fit the Sony DSLR I purchased. I still have a Sony camera for taking game photos of a local elite hockey team I volunteer with but am retired from the horse show photography. Great memories though! @@ruthaisling

    Another great video Ruth, as you say weight is important, I met an old truck driver in Canada who had separate cameras with different lenses on them. He did that to make sure no dust, or stoor as we say in Scotland, got in when the lenses were being changed. It looks like an expensive business making RUclips videos.

    • @ruthaisling
      @ruthaisling  10 месяцев назад +1

      Ah yes, dust on the lens or sensor is the worst, it ruins the whole shot. He sounds like a smart guy!

    Your equipment seems very well researched, without anything superfluous in your pack. I suspect working with Final Cut Pro would be the steepest learning curve. I do like the most expensive thumbnail for sure… should be for the price! Thanks for all the info. I was particularly interested in your drone … the shots you take with it are breathtaking!

    Been working my way through your videos in a rather haphazard manner (sometimes based on the thumbnails!!!) -- and really appreciate all the time and effort (and equipment) that you put into your regular travel videos, but this was a great bonus (have not made it to the Scottish foods video yet). Thank you for sharing all of your equipment and techniques wrapped up in the 'This is what works for me, but you may find other things work for you.' attitude. Yep -- each person is different, their subject/location/topic may be different and their aesthetic sense may be different -- so it's very refreshing to hear someone who isn't saying, 'This is the only camera/microphone/drone/software/etc that you should use.' But your examples bring out the pros and cons of what you use, and some of the options -- very fair minded and well presented. I never would have thought of outsourcing things like the thumbnails -- but that's an awesome idea -- a savings of time and effort for sure, and you really were not paying a lot through Fiverr. Thank you for taking the time to put this video together -- though I did miss the yummy meals/snacks that you have in your travel videos!!! 😁 -- and don't forget the open invitation for you and Ernie (he just needs some pontoons and a propeller!) to pop over to the States to do some travelling and videos!

    Hi Ruth, just started following your content so lot's to catch up on. I'm currently at your episode about gas and thought "Tools" - this is one of the best you can have available. I live 50% on and off a narrowboat. Cylinder changes bring their own challenges, so early on I invested in the Honeywell EzSense Flammable Gas Detector Wand. This allows you to simply check near the gas bottle connection, the pipework etc., and within the space you occupy. Its easy to use and very accurate in my five year canal experience of using it. Note: I am not sponsored for this product.

I have two of them for my Canon cameras, when I don't need to use it I just unclip it and use peak design sling strap, as the peak design universal clips fit all their straps and cuffs.

    Your expertise is admirable. I prefer Sony gear, as well, but what I have is prosumer at best.
    I'm more of a dork, than anything. hence more prone to building drones than outright camera work.

  • @michaelbruchas6663
    @michaelbruchas6663 9 месяцев назад

    I own the same Sony camera but have hardly used it. Bought it to shoot video with - however I have 2 Sony video cameras - one old prosumer and 1 low-end professional. SmallRig cage - 👍.
    Shoot more often - but just stills - with the older Sony a6000. Have a lot of Sony and Sigma lenses.
    Had some older Sony Nex camera bodies but wasn’t happy with them,
    A cautionary note on that beautiful iPhone - make sure the lenses are clean. A smudge can make your shots look softer.
    I use a Sennheiser wireless mic and the same Rode faux shotgun. Just bought a better Sennheiser shotgun mic for the camera.
    Used their broadcast mics in tv production for years.
    I own the DJI mini 2 drone but haven’t used it much

    The more expensive thumbnails are far too busy and turn me off the most as I am a keen advocate for KISS, and a minimalist approach, therefore I would go with the cheapest version. For filming I use a Sony PXW-Z150 Camera, which is a big heavy to lug around so use a small 4K action camera or my iPhone for filming on the go as they both integrate well with my bigger 4K camera. For editing I also use Final Cut Pro X and started with the earlier versions in 1999, so I have been doing for a while now. I like your story telling and filming and appreciate finding all about Scotland, the place my forebears came from.

It’s actually been an adjustment speaking English all the time again. I sometimes say weird sentences or pronunciations and take a few seconds to remember words, it probably sounds strange since English is my native language 😂

    The 5 dollar thumb nail is the one I would click on. I am having issues about RUclips thumb nails being too glitzeeee. Too glitzeeee generally means poor content begging for a click. Text on the thumb nail helps to communicate the video content. Questionable thumb nailed videos get a random 4 click 4 second sampling before seeing if the comments have been disabled. Disabled comments generally means a propaganda video. As a general rule it is thumbs down or just on to something else if the screen test fails.

    Now you become a professional RUclipsr. I suppose you have a lot of knowledge and skills in DIY and filmmaking. Have you had already those skills or have you gotten after working with “Shorta”. Now he reported many news from USA.

    I think this should have come with a disclaimer that 26000 youtube subs does not buy £8000 worth of kit. And this was all privately funded. The apple gear alone was £3500!

      Hi Mick, thanks for your comment.
      I’d like to clarify something from the video. I didn't say that this RUclips channel purchased all this equipment recently. In fact, I only started this channel a few months ago. Some of the gear isn't even new; for example, the laptop I'm using is five years old. In my first video on this channel (you might have missed it), I mentioned that I had been doing RUclips even before starting this channel. Before this channel, I was part of another channel, and I gradually collected these tools over the years.
      I'm extremely grateful that people have enjoyed the videos on this new channel and subscribed. This support has enabled me to start making money through Adsense and brand partnerships. I've reinvested all that income from the last few months into recent purchases like the bag, drone, and a new lens (I got it at half price during a sale) because I want to improve my video quality and make nice videos about Scotland.
      These purchases are investments in my work, much like a carpenter buying a drill or a hairstylist investing in hair dryers and styling tools.
      I understand that it might seem like a substantial expense initially, but it wasn't always this way. When the previous channel started, a GoPro3 was used for filming, which was already a six year old camera at the time, it was challenging to even afford a microphone or tripod. It took over a year before there were enough funds to upgrade equipment and enhance videos.
      What you see in this video is the result of four years of hard work, with very few days off, and consistent effort to build the other RUclips channel. Now, I can use this equipment to create videos while I'm back in Scotland.
      I admit that I could have shared more of my backstory in this video, but I tend to avoid mentioning the other channel since I'm no longer a part of those videos, and I want to focus my efforts on this new channel.

    How much does camera equipment cost?It's Sony, which is a world renowned brand, and anyone who owns all this equipment must be a professional photographer, and I have a hunch that Ruth-san was in Japan the privious month in August, Isn't this the one I bought at Yodobashi Camera in Osaka?I'm also looking forward to the next van life, and I with you all the best with your camera equipment😊

      カメラ機材は安いものではない。
      レンズとカメラバッグは、イギリスで買うより日本で買った方がずっと安かったので、先月大阪で買いました!
