Your videos convinced me to pick up a 35 1.4 for portraits. I have never looked back. It’s such a unique look with just enough of the background incorporated. I can’t leave home without it.
Last year I mostly had the Sony a7IV, the 24GM, 35GM, 50 1.4 GM and 85 1.8 with me. I was recently in Barcelona for a few days and downsized. I left the 24GM/35GM and 85 1.8 at home, but I had the Sony a7IV and the 50mm 1.4 GM as well as the Leica Q3, the combination worked very well.
I like to travel light, one body, a 50/1.4 & 85/2.0. Sometimes I might carry a 70-200/4.0 plus a 1.4 converter. I find the 2x a bit soft. I rarely carry or use a wide angle. I prefer a satchel type bag.
My travel setup: Lenses - Sony 20mm f1.8, Sigma art 50mm f1.4, and Sony GM II 70-200mm f2.8, 2x converter. Camera body Sony A7rV, Bag: Wandrd Prvk 32liter w/camera cube system, tripod it depends on time its a table top but if I know I will have little time to take some nice night captures and landscapes I will take one of the travel tripods. if I did do some videos and needed some b roll I might take the Sony ZV-EV10 with 11mm f.8 lens
For now, I travel with two cameras and two lenses. My basic travel kit consists of an A7RC and an A7CII with a 16-35 PZ or 24-70 GM II and the 70-200 f4 G II with 14x. My bag is a Tenba DNA Messenger and I currently travel with a medium Leofoto tripod with a medium RRS head.
Thanks so much for doing this video! I'm not a fan of 'real' camera bags either. One of my favorite lens has been 24-105 g master. It would be nice if it were 2.8, but I still can get some amazing images out of it. Love the new 70-200 f4 lens!
Great to see some photos from Prague 🙂 Well, as travel photography isn't a big part of my photography work (although in the future, I'd like to do it more), I only recently got a relatively affordable zoom lens, Sony 24-105 G and during my last trip to Venice I took most photos with this lens. But I also had my trusty 20/1.8 G and 35/1.4 GM with me. I have to agree with you that the 35 GM is the best.
I have Photography friends that visit every year to Sydney for the "Vivid Sydney" event ! Maybe you will be here during that time to capture some nice photos. BTW i like your setup ! I have the Nikon 180-600 ! I thought I was crazy to carry around that big lens. Glad I am not the only one ! I also have the 24-200 and Tamron 35mm f1.8 and 85 1.8 both VC. and those 3 are 67mm filter. As I migrate to the Z mount.. you have inspired me to look at something wide like your 16-35. You have also added weight to the 70-180 & TC2.0 combination ! On the other hand the new Tamron 35-150 is very attractive as a 2 lens kit with the 180-600. Anyway ,, Hope to see some "Vivid Sydney" photos from you soon !!

Nice video, Julia! Thanks for explaining your travel photography setup. Mine is an Olympus EM1 Mark III with an Olympus 14-150mm lens (28-300mm equivalent). This helps keep my bag light. I’d like to pack more equipment for a potential trip this summer. How could I do this given that I’ll be flying on a plane?
Since I’ve been so addicted with the A7cr + 300, I traded my Canon for the A9iii. I can’t believe how good the ergonomics have become with Sony camera bodies. I have the 50 1.4 GM and just ordered a used 20 1.8 G for a bit wide stuff when I need it.
I own the A1 and I do not like the grip on the A9iii at all. I think it’s a bad decision and caters to Nikon/Canon users. I do not want a A1ii with that fat grip, I want it compact the way it is. Despise the A9iii
A7iv. Jealous. I’m about to finally start my photography journey after years and years of waiting. Might jump in and just say. Do it and get that same camera. Looks so good in every aspect I could ever need for years and years to come
Hi, I'm kind of wonder if I buy 50mm f.14 Gm or 35mm f1.4GM first ? cause I prefer to shoot portrait and landscape for travel also. but my budget right now is only buy 1 lens first. So can u recommend what lens I should buy ? Thank you
Hi Julia. I’m new to photography and trying different things at the moment. You said you’re happy with the results of the 2x extender. I got a 1.4 but I feel like I lose a bit of quality when I use it. I’m using it mainly for landscape and wildlife on a canon 100-400 all fitted to an R7. Do you think it’s because of a cheaper type lens or could I just be trying to reach too far??
I have thought about it, while it’s a great lens, it is too heavy for me. It’s different having a light lens on your camera and the weight of extra lenses in your backpack vs always having one heavy lens on your camera. Especially when I shoot with my 35mm maybe 80% of the time while travelling!
@JuliaTrotti It's cool seeing inside your travel bags of infinite holding! It really is bigger on the inside than the outside! It's really cool that Dan got the A9III. I haven't seen much about it being used for video, and I am very curious. :) Will he be using it for high speed shooting as well? I totally know what you mean about camera bags making you a bit of a target. I feel fine using mine in most places, but there are places where it just doesn't feel like a good idea. For those, I switch to my A7C, and a 5L Peak Design Everyday Sling. It's tiny, so it doesn't attract attention. Funny story...one day, I hung my Everyday Sling behind me on my chair at a sushi place. I left with the group I was with. When we were about 10 blocks away, I realized I'd *left it at the sushi place*! (The camera and bag are so light that I didn't realize that I didn't have them on me!) With the A7C inside! Fortunately, the sushi place had found it and held on to it for me. Do you take all of those lenses with you when you go out exploring, or do you just pick one or two and leave the others in your hotel room? Hoping for the 85 1.2 as well! :) All of the rumors that I've heard lately point to an 85 1.4 instead... but I talked to a Sony person at a camera store recently, who thought that Sony would release *both* lenses, with the 85 1.2 following the 1.4 by about 4 months.
Wow that would be so great if they did come out with the 85mm 1.2. They teased us about it a couple of years ago, so i feel like it should be in the works!!! Hoping!!!
I often do crops from 61 megapixels Cameras when using fx the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM Lens so it is equivalent to 300+mm with excellent results ! You do not need a zoom when you have an excellent prime Lens. Save money, space and weight !
@@juliatrotti A 61 megapixels Camera is like having two Cameras in one Camera, I often use the APSC mode with 26 megapixels in the Camera when I do not need full frame 61 megapixels.
I always use carry on, a small rolly suitcase and a backpack. The only lens I check in on the occasions I take it with me is the 200-600. I had to check it for my trip to Antarctica because it just wouldn't fit in my carry on lol
I can’t imagine carrying all of that for traveling. The A7 IV and Tamron 35-150 in a Tenba wrap and tossed into my normal backpack is all I use when traveling.
@@juliatrotti thanks, appreciate it. I’’m really intrigued by it, but it’s really pricy. I was asking because I’m more interested in the photography aspect of it rather than the video part. But if Dan replaced his a7siii with it, it must be stellar in video too. I have an A7RIII and an A7RIV and am hoping to sell one or both of these to fund the A9III. I will watch your video again to make a decision. Thanks.
For me. Sony a7iv. Tamron 17-28mm, 28-75mm, 70-180mm and the Sigma 50mm f1.4. pretty simple and light. All fits into one carry on bag. I use a neewer backpack because it doesnt look like a lowepro so it looks more like a heavy duty backpack than a camerabag yet it's very durable
Just one question, how do you deal with weight? It’s a dream kit, but very heavy, especially if there’s a lot of walking involved. There’s was a time I’d lug it around, but I think I’ve gotten too old!
I mentioned in the video that I usually have 2 lenses on me. This is all the gear I use for travelling, but I will pick the focal lengths to take with me depending on the activity/trip. So like to Antarctica I mostly took telephoto lenses and left the wider focal lengths at home. Perhaps I should have made that clearer in the video as some people are upset with all the gear I mentioned 😅
Do you really need aperture 1.2 !? I can recommend the Zeiss Batis Sonnar 85mm 1.8 T* which I got used in excellent condition for US $550 (taxes included). The Batis 85mm is very handy, light weight and gives you beautiful images ! I do not thing Sony will make a 85mm 1.2 Lens, expect a new 85mm 1.4.
@@cameraprepper7938yeah I agree it’s just that Julia jokingly said 85mm 1.2 and I know RUclipsrs get gear early for review videos and I wondered if there was maybe some truth in the 1.2
@@Princejp-m6k Well I follow rumors with Sony gear and those rumors say that it most likely will be a new better more compact, light weight 85mm 1.4 GM Lens from Sony. Size and weight matters a lot.
I respectfully don't agree with the title "travel bag". This is a top of the line gear but also heavy and takes a lot of space. This is closer to a professional bag.

Julia, excellent timing as I just retired at the end of January and my wife and I are going to do more traveling and I am looking to put together a nice traveling kit. I have the Sony A74 and the Sony A7Siii (normally I take the A74 if I am only going to take one for some video but mostly photo). I currently have the Sony 50mm F.14 GM lens. The two new ones shipping this week are something I am considering, looking to decide on one of them (Sony 16-25mm F2.8 G or Sony 24-50mm F2.8 G). I am not a pro, so GMs (16-35mm F2.8 GM ii, 24-70mm f2.8 GM ii) are a bit out of the price range. I have never used a wide angle zoom (I did own the Sony 24mm F1.4 GM for a time), but think it could be good for travel. I also like the idea of the 24-50mm F2.8 always on the camera and just use the 50mm 1.4 at night, indoors, lowlight, etc. I know you are a 35mm F1.4 GM (your . . . if I had to be stranded on an island with one lens . . . . ). I don't do any vlogging but do landscape photography and I want to do more video. What do you and Dan think with my camera bodies, would you go the Sony 16-25mm F2.8 G or Sony 24-50mm F2.8 G as the next lens?
In my bag: Sony A1, A7RIVa, 20G, 50GM 1.2, 135GM, Profoto A10, ECM-B1M Microphone, Peak Design Carbon Fiber Tripod, Hoya Filters. I leave the zoom (70-200GMII) at home. 35/85 stinks... Until they make a proper 24mm Prime for the A1 Speed, 20/50/135 is the ultimate hiking Holy Trinity
I do not like zoom Lenses, I had the Sony 200-600mm 5.6- 6.5 G Lens, which nearly was the only long affordable Lens when I got it, the 200-600 is to big and heavy, I had to buy a new very large photo backpack for it, the 200-600 also have problems when used on Sony A7R series cameras with the stabilizer system, so you often get blurry images !!! Packing for travel is not straight forward, where, when and why do you travel !? If I was on a travel and need "everything" I would still would still go as light as possibly, fx Zeiss Loxia Distagon 21mm 2.8 T*, Sony Zeiss Sonnar 35mm 2.8 T* ZA (or Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 aspherical), Sony Zeiss Sonnar 85mm 1.8 T*, Voigtländer Macro APO-Lantar 110mm 2.5 and the new Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports Lens which is very compact. light weight and fits in a small photo back pack ! I sold the 200-600 ! Two Sony A7RIV Cameras. I could do another mix of Lenses, I also have Sony 14mm 1.8 GM, Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 T* ZA, Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0 Aspherical and Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, it is always nice to have plenty of prime Lenses to choose a selection to a hike or travel.
I’m very much a newbie to this but I’m liking my A7 iii with a Tamron 28 -200. No need to change lessons. Drone is the Mini 4 pro for the UK and Mavic 3 classic for Europe, sometimes both, selection is based on local laws.
I carry My FX3+16-35 for video work and the A7IV+35-150 for photo, also have the 35 1.4 GM for city walk around and if I know I will do astro I just toss my 20 f1.8 in the bag as well. I was hesitating between the 35-150 or the 70-200 GM II but the 35-150 is more compact when it's not "in use", similar weight, but way more versatile.
Bag: Peak Design Sling (6L), though I also want a backpack of some sort for photo hikes. Camera + lenses: Nikon D5100, Sigma 17-70 Contemporary (which stays on the camera body), Nikon 55-300 Tripod: K&F Concept D225C2, want something lighter but also carbon fiber for photo walks/hikes (srsly, walking with this strapped to the bottom of my bag wasn't great). Accessories: L-bracket (the one I have and used is not great, unfortunately), Polarpro ND8/CPL filter (82mm), 58-82 and 72-82 step-up rings, Peak Design Leash strap, and I have a PD Capture Clip on the way!
You must have a very trained back. :-D Actually none of these lenses are good for traveling. Way too heavy and above all too expensive. Zooms are perfect for traveling and landscape. But why 2.8? There is the exellent 20-70 G and also very good 70-200 G Macro. Both F4. And if it's a fixed focal length, hell, then use the small ones. Samyang 24 1.8, Zeiss 55mm 1.8, Sigma 90mm 2.8... There are options.
When I travel I also use a non camera bag to bring 30k worth of gear and risk it being lost or stolen. Anyone watching this thinking you need all this to take good travel photos you don’t get yourself a super zoom, you will find very quickly that great photos will trump what gear you used to take it every time because majority of people do not give a F what you used
7:40 absolutely despise the "Mini 3 Pro". It has the same terrible controller that weighs 116g more than the "Mini 1", plus it is geo-fenced. Every drone since the Mavic Mini has been terrible for backpacking, because of the increased weight of the controller and they are all geo-fenced. My Mini 1 is hacked and I have no-geofencing, which means I can fly it as high as I want wherever I want and nobody can do a thing to stop it other than shoot it down...that is "Power". Those new DJI drones suck
I actually do something similar, I put a small/medium size camera bag in my normal backpack. The pros are you get double the protection with negative being it takes a little longer to get stuff out but I dont switch lenses that often so it's fine.
5:22 I must have a bad copy of the 2x teleconverter. It looks like complete trash on the 70-200GMII on the A1 & R4 bodies. I get better sharper results just punching into Super-35 at 300mm and cropping. I even increase the shutter speed as well and put it on a tripod...every image with the 2x Teleconverter is terrible with LOCO, color fringing and softness. They refuse to debut proper GMII teleconverters until the 2026 Olympics with the 400GMII & 600GMII

lol the amount of salty amateurs commenting on here saying “you’re wrong that is too much equipment.” When this video is “What’s in MY camera bag” and not “What you should travel light with” Hey commenter: maybe YOURE wrong, have you thought about that?
Nice informative video. You are carrying the most expensive travel gear. Not applicable for hobbyists like us. Travel gear should be the lightest. Light on the weight and light on the pocket.
So basically, you bring all your regular giant sized, heavy glass that doesn't make any of them actually TRAVEL lenses. Travel lenses are supposed to be small, light and versatile like an Olympus 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro, or a Tamron 35-150mm f/2.8-4 or a Nikon 24-120mm f/4. This is one area where M43 is far FAR superior than full frame cameras.
It sounds like you are weak and cannot carry dual 50+ MP FF bodies with multiple Primes... The Crown is too heavy for you. I’ve backpacked all over America with A1/50GM & A7R4/20G with the 135GM in my pack for reach.
Maybe for you that’s what travel gear is supposed to be like. This is what I like to bring. I’m also not going to go out and buy a set of cameras and lenses that I might only use 1-2 times a year when I travel, I’d rather repurpose my gear to make the most of it
@@Princejp-m6k Nope, not even gonna go there; try hiking for 8 hours with a dSLR, 70-200 f/4, 24-105 f/4 and an 11-16 f/2.8. That's actual travel, and that kind of dead weight sucks the fun out of TRAVEL. That used to be my gear, and it gets tiring FAST, especially as you get older. But also ruins your time actually soaking in your surrounding. Sounds like you spend more time hitting the gym than actually travelling and doing photography? You'd know what it feels like to carry that much gear all day. Julia herself even admits it that these lenses are cumbersome, big and heavy.

This is some great stuff so I just subscribed. Can’t wait to see more videos.
Thank you!
@@juliatrotti you’re welcome
I can’t imagine carrying all of that for traveling. The A7 IV and Tamron 35-150 in a Tenba wrap and tossed into my normal backpack is all I use when traveling.

@@thomasanderson5929but not the meaning of “what’s in MY camera bag”

I was thought the a7c2 would become your main camera.😆
Did you get the A9III as a replacement to one of your cameras? How do you like it?
Yeah it’s Dans and it’s replacing one of his a7siii bodies. I have a review about the a9iii on my channel if you want to hear my thoughts about it!

Thanks for sharing!
Simple: three lenses
Wide zoom (15-35), normal prime (35 or 50) and tele zoom (70-200 or 100-500)
Hi Julia, are you hinting a 85 1.2 for e mount is coming soon?😮😮
Do you really need aperture 1.2 !? I can recommend the Zeiss Batis Sonnar 85mm 1.8 T* which I got used in excellent condition for US $550 (taxes included). The Batis 85mm is very handy, light weight and gives you beautiful images ! I do not thing Sony will make a 85mm 1.2 Lens, expect a new 85mm 1.4.
@@cameraprepper7938 do I need? Not really. Zeiss batis 85 lacks buttons, I'd rather go with Sony 85 1.8 for even cheaper at $350.
No, I have no idea if it’s coming. Just hoping!!

But who really need aperture 1.2 !!! Last year I bought the Zeiss Batis Sonnar 85mm 1.8 T* used for US $550 (taxes included) in excellent condition, the Batis 85mm is very handy, light weight, excellent image quality and aperture 1.8 is more than enough for me ! Size and weight matters a lot.
I respectfully don't agree with the title "travel bag". This is a top of the line gear but also heavy and takes a lot of space. This is closer to a professional bag.

Riiight?! I’ve been patiently waiting!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I could do another mix of Lenses, I also have Sony 14mm 1.8 GM, Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 T* ZA, Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0 Aspherical and Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, it is always nice to have plenty of prime Lenses to choose a selection to a hike or travel.
spill the tea please. how can you afford to travel to all these beautiful places
I’m very much a newbie to this but I’m liking my A7 iii with a Tamron 28 -200. No need to change lessons. Drone is the Mini 4 pro for the UK and Mavic 3 classic for Europe, sometimes both, selection is based on local laws.
In my bag: Fuji X100T and a Nikon D5600 with a 18-300 mm lens on it !!!.....😃......thanks for the great videos !!!!
Sony a7r5 + Sony Fe 200-600mm with a camo sleeve + Sony Fe 20mm f1.8 + Sony Fe 24-70GMii 😊
Great
I carry My FX3+16-35 for video work and the A7IV+35-150 for photo, also have the 35 1.4 GM for city walk around and if I know I will do astro I just toss my 20 f1.8 in the bag as well. I was hesitating between the 35-150 or the 70-200 GM II but the 35-150 is more compact when it's not "in use", similar weight, but way more versatile.
"Hiring" a car? Is that NZ lingo?
Bag: Peak Design Sling (6L), though I also want a backpack of some sort for photo hikes.
Camera + lenses: Nikon D5100, Sigma 17-70 Contemporary (which stays on the camera body), Nikon 55-300
Tripod: K&F Concept D225C2, want something lighter but also carbon fiber for photo walks/hikes (srsly, walking with this strapped to the bottom of my bag wasn't great).
Accessories: L-bracket (the one I have and used is not great, unfortunately), Polarpro ND8/CPL filter (82mm), 58-82 and 72-82 step-up rings, Peak Design Leash strap, and I have a PD Capture Clip on the way!
Morocco nice huh ?😘
You must have a very trained back. :-D Actually none of these lenses are good for traveling. Way too heavy and above all too expensive. Zooms are perfect for traveling and landscape. But why 2.8?
There is the exellent 20-70 G and also very good 70-200 G Macro. Both F4.
And if it's a fixed focal length, hell, then use the small ones. Samyang 24 1.8, Zeiss 55mm 1.8, Sigma 90mm 2.8...
There are options.
Great choice unless you someone to carry all that for you.
Can u please make a video about using on camera flash, especially for night event photography xD.... thank u 😁😊
For me, travel means A7c II , tamron 20-40 and sigma 85mm 1.4...and maybe tamron 70-180 g2....these all fit Ona bowery leather bag
When I travel I also use a non camera bag to bring 30k worth of gear and risk it being lost or stolen. Anyone watching this thinking you need all this to take good travel photos you don’t get yourself a super zoom, you will find very quickly that great photos will trump what gear you used to take it every time because majority of people do not give a F what you used
You are a gorgeous person
Great video
I use the sigma 28-70 2.8 most of the time for travel.
How did you hack the Mini 1?
@@nicholassmith7723I don’t kiss and tell...
It's hard to argue with the Tamron 35-150 for a "do it all" lens. If you need a few ultra-wide shots, the Tamron 17-28 fills the gap.
Yep that lens is so popular for travel and I can see why!
I actually do something similar, I put a small/medium size camera bag in my normal backpack. The pros are you get double the protection with negative being it takes a little longer to get stuff out but I dont switch lenses that often so it's fine.
Yep I agree with you, it can be annoying but I also don’t normally change my lens too often
2:08 Prague, Czechia my hometown 😏
Prague is so beautiful! I would love to visit again one dat
You will find that most manufacturers make good 1.4 converters. The 2x is another story but they work best on super telephotos not zoom lenses.
Nikon Z needs a [FX] Z16-35/2.8 (or Z 15-35/2.8) lens! That'd be my main landscape/travel/video etc choice.

Hey commenter: maybe YOURE wrong, have you thought about that?
Nice informative video. You are carrying the most expensive travel gear. Not applicable for hobbyists like us. Travel gear should be the lightest. Light on the weight and light on the pocket.
meanwhile I just use my iPhone 🤣😭😞
Oh I use my phone a lot too while travelling! Forgot to mention it 😅
Симпатичная девушка.
I’m also not going to go out and buy a set of cameras and lenses that I might only use 1-2 times a year when I travel, I’d rather repurpose my gear to make the most of it
Hit the gym pal, travel lenses are supposed to be whatever lenses fit your purpose when travelling
o yeah cause you are definitely going to love walking around with a 35-150 on your neck bozo. couldve at least listed something sensible like a 24-70
@@Princejp-m6k Nope, not even gonna go there; try hiking for 8 hours with a dSLR, 70-200 f/4, 24-105 f/4 and an 11-16 f/2.8.
