I was a member of the ITU when computerized typesetting and automation came along. When it did the workforce was gradually reduced as the new processes were introduced. Those in union shops, got early retirement packages, buyouts, reassignment to other departments with no decrease in pay. In my case in a group of 8 who worked, in the transition, to its final completion, a guaranteed life time job with the company. Those 8 jobs were so-bullet proof that they were in the sales agreement when the company was sold 5 times, to a succession of owners. Those who worked in non-union shops got a pink slip and two -weeks severance, if they were lucky.

Lived near Detroit my entire life. The UAW peaked at 1.7 million members in the 70's. I've known several UAW workers and they're lazy, go to work drunk or high and brag about somebody clocking them out so they can take off early. The UAW cares about one thing.........the UAW and many of their leaders have gone to prison recently. When the UAW takes over a company the quality goes down, the costs go up and eventually they bankrupt the company. I use to buy their junk but quit that in 2012 and won't go back.

Unions should look after the best interests of the workers that they represent. Unfortunately this seems to be translated to just fighting for higher salaries. Perhaps better would be work with the company's management to ensure that any decisions are taken are in both the company's and the workers interests.

The UAW stikes in Fall 2023 were in response to members complaining Tesla employees had better pay and benefits, and many Tesla workerers were millionaires and they wanted the same. So the UAW set out to match Tesla's pay. Ford, Stilantis and VW UAW workers got MASSIVE pay and benefit increases. So much that it is INCREASING vehicle prices. Now MB workers say they are better paid WITHOUT UAW's plan. UAW's Execs are each paid over a Million yearly.

B.S. Tesla hourly employees never had better pay and benefits that UAW workers. The hourly employees were not allowed into the stock purchase plan until 2022 and its requires 5 years vesting to be able to purchase Tesla stock. SO ZERO hourly workers are millionaires. You got the pay increase backwards. It came after the UAW contract settlements with the three companies you mention. The UAW President Shawn Fain earns $187,259 a year leading a UAW non-profit training program and another $160,130 per year in his previous role of administrative assistant at the union. Ford CEO Jim Farley received total compensation of $22,813,174 in 2021 for running the company. The vote for a union at Mercedes 2,642 to 2,045. Unfair labor practice charges have been filed against Mercedes. As we politely say in union meetings. Take a seat and shut up.

the UAW and the auto industry in general knows there is major changes/pain coming their way . the UAW and auto manufacturers are in the early stages of total transformation, robots /automation don't belong to unions so no money coming in to fund them. the more manufacturers move to electric makes for less jobs, just think how much fewer parts are in a EV compared to a ICE , just the motors themselfs , and remember pretty much all components for a union assembled vehicle come from union suppliers the snowball effect is going to be massive, couple that with a american consumer that is out of money and you have a perfect storm brewing. and the USA government is in no shape to be bailing any of them out! nor should they! ✌

have a "race to the bottom" for the workers and a
"race to the top" for executives. I didn't hear
the Viking have any problem with Elon getting 50
billion for his part-time-work. In China, top
executives will order lunch at restaurants that
charge a quarter of a million dollars for a
sandwich. It is like the middle ages or like the
early industrial revolution, where there are a few super
rich people nd everybody else is supposed to celebrate when
a tiny crumb gets thrown down. One can protect union
labor with tariffs which the Viking will not like
either, but I see no other option. I want to be
paid a living wage even if that means taxing the
rich, tariffs, and unions. On the other hand, we can't
go to an extreme in that direction either.

Thanks for telling like it is. I'm from the deep South of USA and remember what happened when just the Minimum Wage (forget Unions) was installed in my home town. I was a small boy but I recall how my Dad reacted when he told the family how things changed over night after the MW hit the local manufacturing mill he supported as its professional forester. Before, the mill had a number of casual labor keeping the mill yards clean of debris and trash that resulted from normal operations, but afterwards those workers simply disappeared.

The IBEW would send them out on strike on strike pay. When the strike was over they went back to work and had to fix the work that accumulated while they were out.
