There is no historical basis for this, but I'm going to assume that conversation really happened in some form.

It’s about as accurate as “we are not amused”.

Chestnut trees have about the same scent about them. And there's plenty in my town and where I work. Around this time of year I have to often walk through a fog of spunk smell.

Every time I smell one of those awful trees now ( and there a tons around the parks In Cambridge) I think about this sketch , It's amazing how ur mind plays tricks on you though. I hadn't seen the clip in ages and in my mind Robert Webbs queen victoria had a big wide dress which she glided alone with wheels on the bottom of the dress. Maybe i'm getting 2 clips mixed up ? Those trees should be cut down for insulting public decency. There have been a few times when the 'waft' of one of these trees comes over a group and it can cause ( especially shy) people to feel quite embarrassed. Everybody knows what everyone else is thinking but nobody wants to be the one to broach the subject. If your eating anything with brie in it at the time, or cheese in general actually, forget it - that's lunch over ! It was that long ago that my mum and I were walking along the road and the other powering stench of one of these trees passed over us. It was impossible to ignore and she had a fleeting moment of recognition and tried to describe the smell- searching her brain for where she recognized it. I was cringing as her face suddenly betrayed the realization of recollection that dawned on her. It was an awkward few minutes of changing the subject. ' arn't the flowers looking nice this time of year?' , 'There isn't a cloud in the sky !' There are just some subjects you can't go there with ur mum. A conversation about something smelling like cum is one of them. Totally mortifying. Seriously, save the nations awkwardness and cut all these fuckers down. Even the 'tree huggers' will be to embarrassed and nausiated to house themselves up these fuckers! I think this 'gift' was someones idea of a practical joke !

The one where she glides is from the prequel to Hitchcock's Rebecca sketch. David plays Mrs Danvers.

Michael Collins did you seriously read all that drivel ? Just looked back at the essay I wrote, sorry to everyone on you-tube. That's what smoking a number before commenting does. Profuse apologies

Total shock on my side. In Poland Linden trees have the most wonderful, very distinct, enchanting sweet fragrance. It is not exactly fragrance of peony / honeysuckle, but it is first what comes to my mind to describe tone of perfume. We love it so much that the month of June / Lipiec is named after linden tree Lipa. It must be part of french revenge, they pushed on you the stinky specie of the Linden tree. :))))))

Had those trees in my old neighborhood, I'm glad I'm not crazy. Smelled like fish vaginas, I swear.

Bradford Pears also smell of rotting fish.

This comment comes many years after the original, but I have Linden, Bradford Pear and Ginko trees all around me here in Detroit and I really don't notice any "distinctive scent". Albeit, I've been here my entire life, but traveling elsewhere, I've certainly smelt worse. New York being one example. San Fransisco another. Maybe all the Oaks and Elms and nuts wash out the stench. Either that or the Great Lakes. Regardless, this is one of my favorite Mitchell and Webb skits. They are genius.

@JVbin - No direct historical basis for the sketch, although Victoria was rather keen on physical intimacy, contrary to what modern mythology would have us believe. I think my interest in the Victorian period has only heightened my enjoyment of this brilliant M&W piece, and it has to be my personal favourite of all time. I don't think comedy gets any better than this.
