Let's Talk Kings Island Ride Operations - 2020 (Mason, Ohio)

  • It's been a rough year for the theme park industry. Practically every park in the country was closed for a few months between March and July, extremely limiting the operational days for parks, especially in the northeast part of the country. In some ways, ‪@KingsIslandPR‬ was affected even more than other parks - as they were scheduled to open a 30 million dollar new attraction, Orion. Because of the limited capacity at the parks and shortened operational year, Kings Island will not see the return in investment, like a boost in attendance, until at the earliest: 2021.
    Kings Island was able to open in time for the Fourth of July holiday, and with initial lines to ride Orion lasting over 4 hours long - the park was given a bit of proof that their new attraction would be a crowd pleaser. Unfortunately, ride capacity was halved due to social distancing guidelines, so the ride wasn’t able to function at full operational capacity.
    Speaking of capacity, I thought it would be fun to monitor how well Kings Island’s ride operations were handling their handicapped capacity. So, during my last trip to Kings Island, I timed multiple dispatches from their 3 most popular attractions to see how efficient their team was performing. The three coasters I tracked were Mystic Timbers, Diamondback, and Orion. I was hoping to also track a few other coasters but these three were consistently holding the longest lines in the park.

      Banshee has been a real capacity machine this year. If I’m not mistaken they were allowing it to take full trains this year, so when I went it barely ever had a long line

    • @Jazz_593
      @Jazz_593 3 года назад +1

      This is factual, i have worked at Banshee a few times this year and there is a few reasons for that. We dont allow bags in line which means people arent going to put bags in bins, they are just going to get right on the ride. Also we can fill up the whole train as long as everyone in the row is in the same group.

    I’ve worked at Mystic for 2 years. You were pretty spot on with your estimates for Mystic this year. This year with 2 trains we average around 26 trains per hour. However we do send two trains empty every hour due to our cleaning procedures so that reduces the max output of 26 trains down to 288 riders per hour. With us also not being able to group single riders this year due to the guidelines, it causes our numbers to be reduced a bit more and puts us on average a little over 250 riders per hour for 26 trains. For last year we would send an average of 36-37 trains per hour with 3 trains. Are target capacity was 837 riders per hour and we would typically hit that goal.

      Was every coaster dispatching empty trains (1hr intervals for cleaning) because I didn't notice it on Diamondback or Orion? However, I did see them spray and wipe down the trains.

      XscreamThrills no, it’s just Mystic, it’s because our shed gets really hot and we don’t want people stuck in there while we clean. We clean once every 30 mins, and send one empty train before cleaning

    Mystic Timbers and Flight of Fear are the worst at Kings Island as far as slow moving lines this year.

    Orion sup here! I would say the numbers you found are somewhat accurate. We try to aim for at least 36 cycles, and usually get around that. We have been on track for 50 before and other times we have gotten 46 cycles, although its difficult. On average I would say we get about 500-580 riders an hour with around 34-38 cycles. The whole park definitely takes pride in all of our ride ops!

    Kings Island was doing the best of the 3 Cedar Fair parks I visited (KI, CP, WoF). I'm not surprised, since under normal conditions, they are one of the best out there. I saw the crew cleaning the Banshee trains extremely quick. They were a well-oiled machine, and that line never got long. Orion was also outstanding, allowing me to get plenty of rides. When I was in line for Mystic Timbers, 5+ minute dispatches were common. Diamondback wasn't much better. Beast was almost as good as Banshee.

    Diamondback does tend to have a little longer dispatches because it has the new B&M Hyper trains that are much longer. Orion has the standard onces.

    I went here 3 times in 2020 and the first time was the only time I rode Banshee, and it took FOREVER for the staff to sanitize that coaster. That probably has to do with the vest restraints but it was still extremely annoying

    Keep In mind that these ops are artificialy longer because they have a lengthy unload prosess for social distancing purposes. A ride op has to let all rows out separately.

    KI is doing quite well with throughput this summer but I do not understand why Diamondback has to be every other row whereas Orion seats their trains just like Diamondback would without row splitting.
    Also Orion is dismissing entire trains at once so they definitely have a leg up there.

  • @Paolo8772

    That'd be a smart way to avoid Covid on Diamondback. Unfortunately: whilst I love the back row but don't I don't wanna get wet sitting on the outer seats.

    Mystic Timbers can be tough, the line is so rough and doesn’t fly fast at all. Diamondback, even though the line gets long, has flied by alsmost every time i’ve gone in it. Orion is obviously long but I’ve never seen them have a slow dispatch. It’s quite impressive

    I went to KI on a crouded day and guests were not well behaved at all. The staff was doing what they could but the problem came from the park moving to weekend only and not requiring reservations. I think Hershey has done a much better job managing COVID with not filling ques for the sake of social distancing. If I went to KI on a lower croud day I probably would have felt safer. That being said Orion is awesome and it was worth it to get 4 rides on it.

    2:30 You mention mystic is able to run with 3 trains? I thought it only had 3 brake runs (station, transfer, shed), making 3 train ops impossible? Or is there another block section I’m unaware of?
    (I know the lift counts as a block section, but generally coasters have the same numbers it blocks at the end of the ride as there are trains so all the trains are able to stack)

  • @sedricgranger
    @sedricgranger 3 года назад +1

    Some of the operations have not been great. Diamondback running 2 trains is not ideal, flight of fear has been miserable, and mystic timbers isn’t great either. Orion and banshee are fantastic though in terms of operations so it’s a wash! Could be better but good enough based on my 5 trips to the park so far this year
    Note-Kings Island is doing a great job overall! They are making the most out of their situation
