  • No Man's Sky Expedition 11, VOYAGERS, is available for a limited time, but it is worth checking out? Does it hold up to the excellent 2023 summer update, ECHOES, which it accompanies? From milestones that beg you to use portal coordinates to rewards that don't fit the theme, Voyagers is an odd expedition. Luckily it's not too difficult to obtain the Electric Jetpack Trail, the Ragged Tent built part, or the Construct 'Egg' if you go about it the right way. This is my review, and impressions, of the NMS Voyagers Expedition.

I think what saved this expedition for me was the community really banded together. Bless anyone who named planets "Hostile enviro" or named their bases "hot blooded creature" etc. Made it so much less painful. This was only my third expedition and I really wish I could do the earlier ones to get the better prizes like base parts/decorations. I get that they're trying to get us to play around with new features like the catalogue, but yeah, that could have been mixed in with oh, I don't know, a narrative about the explorer's guild and helping them with some sort of larger goal.

As for putting together an expedition that would reinvigorate the game, imagine you start in space but your ship is heavily damaged, and you have to EJECT before you land (otherwise you die), and your ship is completely destroyed -- unrepairable -- and now you have to scour the planet you're on to find a new ship, and then you have to go through several adventures with hostile creatures etc. to find the parts to fix it. The reward at the end is a bespoke ship that you take off in, unique to YOU.

I spent 60+ hours on this expedition. Most of those hours were spent on 3 of the goals for finding specific creatures (blood temp, ph level) and finding a high hostility planet. After all of that, then I had to get to Rendevous 4 - that was nearly 3-4 hours of straight warping. This was partly compounded because I tried a black hole and then found a warp gate anomaly (first time I found one of those and didn't decided to be an explorer). Both of those seemed to put me further away from R4.
Then mix in the "recommended" path in the galaxy map only giving you 1/3 to maybe 1/2 (if lucky) of the distance my ship was capable of jumping made it non-stop map-warp-map-dodge sentinels-map-warp-map-warp-run away from dreadnought-map-warp..... (and refuel in intermittently). It was an ok expedition largely undone by RNGeezus.

I am happy they gave us another expedition but I agree it was underwhelming to say the least. I didnt even get the point of the expedition or the goal of it. Wasnt really lore driven, in fact it was pretty much what I do in NMS anyway: Find a planet, land, scan, maybe make a base, and leave to the next. I also loved how the community came together on this one. If it wasnt for my fellow travelers I would have never found the creature with the highest internal temperature.

This was basically the “leave your freighter/base and get some stellar radiation for once” expedition.
Essentially it feels HG just threw a bunch of stuff together and tossed it at us, telling us to actually go out and explore the game properly for the first time in the last five something months. Almost like it was due to some kind of yearly expedition quota they needed to meet.
Honesty, if they’d have just tossed a redux of the first set of expeditions at us, that literally would have had me over the freaking Anomaly, and so much more engaged, considering I missed those and the redux ones last year.
Sadly, this basically felt like playing a normal file, just with some extra steps.

I was a bit disapointed with this expedition. It was the same as Pioneers, pretty much. Just a list of chores.
    Here is some positivity though...
    1. Its stuff a late-gamer never does anymore, and it forces more exploration and time on the ground. You see some cool stuff you wouldn't have otherwise. I almost never visit toxic planets or attempt to scan every creature anymore. I actually named everything on planets I found all of them on. I havent done that in ages.
    2. For new new players, it taught them how to do a bunch of stuff in the game they might not have ran into for a while. They might have never gone in a cave or bothered with extreme environment planets yet. I know it was a long time for me before I discovered storm crystals, bothered with an extreme sentinel planet, used the submarine or checked out a derelict freighter. It taught them what to expect from certain environments and where to look for specific things. It set new people up pretty well with stuff and knowledge for when it becomes a normal save. And it got them to Eisentam... a huge portion of the player base never leaves Euclid. And it taught noobs about portals and taking advantage of them to find things. It gave them a dream ariel, which forced an Organic freighter encounter, and atlas passes.
And in defense of the expedition... we did get a ton of new content and story with the Echoes update. There is plenty to do. And its limited to players who have completed the Artemis story.
So all those new players are set up and in a really kind galaxy to be working on the story content so they can get at the new Echoes content.
It would have been nice to play the game in Eisentam with all the paradise planets my first playthrough. 😂
I personally was bored out of my mind, cheesed a lot of stuff and spent more time hunting for sweet planets to use as future building sites while I chipped away at the milestones. I always take my time with expeditions. I take the time to set myself up with good equipment and resources like its a new save.
I much prefer the story driven expos. The pirate treasure hunt in galay 89 was my favorite. I had a really really good time with that one.
I really think this expedition was aimed at new players and rushed out to run concurrent with Starfield's release. They gave us so much content with Echoes and had little time to deal with bugs so they made expedition 11 a basic nothing expo that is little different than fooling around in normal mode... how much can go wrong 😂. All the effort went into the update, and I bet it took more time than expected and Hello Games' NMS skeleton crew didn't have the time to make a relvant, story driven expedition.

First, thanks for doing your videos, they are definitely my favorites. I like to do expeditions slowly and not get any help from others unless I just get stuck. I got stuck - I was one that could not get a reward due to some technical glitch and had to wait for an update to fix it. I ended up doing what you did and just find where to go to find certain things rather than just randomly wander from planet to planet. This, of course, did not work until the fix was done - took me about 20 hours to do. I have only been able to do expeditions this year as I am a new player, but would love to have access to all expeditions. Thanks again.

I considered it an intro/examination/appreciation for the new and improved Wonders catalogue that was revamped a couplep-few updates ago. I didn't mind it. I figured a lot of people would be disappointed, but I was fine with it. I would have LIKED a more story-driven expedition, but considering how busy my life is right now, this was a quick one on that I completed on both PC and PS5 on the first weekend. No complaints. Hello Games has been knocking it out of the park on updates, and Echoes had it's own mini expedition as part of it. I don't blame them for taking it easy on this Expedition. I'm glad they did.
Edit to add: I am never ashamed of using bases other people freely advertise to find certain milestones. I never used a portal, but I did use the teleporter to find bases for the planets/creatures I couldn't find on my own. That's what makes the NMS community awesome.

Problem with making an entire expedition around the wonder catalog is, said catalog is useless in helping you accomplish your objectives, as the stuff only shows up once you've scanned and discovered it already .. And by that point , you don't need the information anymore. Now if the Wonders and Discoveries tab allowed you to click on let's say "most toxic blood" and it would allow you to track nearby galaxies that have planets that correspond, it would be a good system , kinda like you can click on paraffinium in your collectiion and it will take you somewhere in the starchart where you can find some, but currently it's essentially useless besides from sharing glyphs with strangers on the internet.

They’ve been getting a ton of new and returning from launch players lately. So I think the purpose was to introduce all the new features in a safe way. Like how they introduce combat through the easiest form; predators. So I liked it for what it was, and I think the rewards were just meant to be cool stuff.
I like your idea about making us meet the plants identified milestone on the same planet to really boost exploration. I saw several planets in the milestone systems that had over 20 plants. One can also check the total and track their progress through the automatic discovery mission that’s always situated at side mission #1.
What might be better is to just have one discover every plant, mineral, and animal on a single planet (as 3 separate milestones). So that it’s doable on any planet (save for ones with 0 of something), but more or less equally hard in terms of exploration. Because even on barren planets with like 5 plants they might only be found in rare cave holes and lakes, or require exploring great distances to find a region with the different plants. At least that’s usually my experience when trying to complete those side missions.
Although it is a little buggy sometimes, as the side mission sometimes underestimates the number of plants and/or minerals on a planet. Which might make the challenge easier than it should be for those favored by RNGesus. It used to be that way with species too, but they fixed it with species when they added the nanite reward for discovering all species on a planet. I wish they’d do the same thing for minerals and plants, and make a super reward for discovering all of all 3…
You actually did more work than I did to get The Hills Have Eyes milestone btw. I just used the space station portal to go to a base named after the milestone, and the base was actually just a high raised platform at the top of a massive staircase. It didn’t even have to be an actual mountain 🤣 They could fix it by making it max miles climbed instead.
If one is really cheesy there’s r/NMSCoordinateExchange to get the planet address for all the rendezvouses and creature milestones too. One can unlock all the stargate symbols with the digging milestone. Which can be done immediately from any planet. One can usually find a base at one of the stargates (e.g. “Portal Base”), but otherwise one could just (spoiler warning) skip to the one at rendezvous 3.

  • @SupramanRambled
    @SupramanRambled 8 месяцев назад +1

Lmao, I got the mountain climb milestone done randomly by making a weird spiderly companion and trying to get it to run. It literally scrambled up a steep cliff faster than an enhanced jetpack jump.
I kind of like the expedition overall. I haven't played this game since 2017 and, as a returning player, the expedition is well-paced enough for me to explore the new additions to the game, gather resources/upgrade tech, and reimmerse myself in the exploration, tech upgrade/expansion, and resource collection that I liked so much the first time around. I've sunk around 80 hours into the expedition so far and am yet to finish the second phase because I am just enjoying taking my time with it. I can see, though, why it could be not as fulfilling for players with established saves.
Personally, I feel like Hello Games very smartly timed this in line with the Starfield launch for returning/new players that would flock to No Man's Sky once Todd Howard's Skyrim in Spaaaaaace lets them down. It seems to be working, too.

That way it would have had a much defined identity while also showcasing the new decorations that this expedition is supposed to focus on.

Aye, I did not find it the most exciting, but for a couple of my friends who was brand new to NMS. I mean their expedition 11 characters IS their first character ever to step into the game. I found it was a good expedition for those who are new. Taught them how to use portals, trying to locate creatures, showing how inter connected the community was with portal locations. Bases named upon what they needed. Learned they had a freighter and touching the gravitino ball on their runs was a bad idea, despite my warnings to them o_o Dear god LOL! (Course that was not on the expedition list, but I tell you. It should have with how fascinated new players are too them things HAHA!) But over all, as an older player, playing through entire story line, sure was not very amazing as the others, but new players? It was actually not too bad! Showed the unique aspects of the game that the current tutorial did not show! Granted this will not be there forever for new folk, but while this expedition is around, this is the best time to be a new player I think!
The strangely specific scans of creatures of this or higher was a bit rough for new ones, but yet again, them showing their was a supportive community, it showed they are in a really special game!

Well even if the stages of this expedition were not fun, I was able to see several magnificent planets and they are among the most beautiful I have ever seen since August 2016.
For this, I have great memories of it and in fact I took care to take photos of the glyphs of the planets to go there later with my main save.
Besides, as you said, using the portals with glyphs was part of a stage of this expedition and they gave us all 16 glyphs at once so it was good for a reason. Share our discoveries.

I feel like the biggest thing missing was the context for Voyagers, which was "It's an expedition you've seen before, but this time your extremes are marked as WONDERS", which was new with Echoes (as well as the method of displaying them). I think you're 100 % when you say this might have been intentional by hello games as they locked the portal glyphs behind the easiest milestone in the whole expedition. This was probably done to sort of band the community together in the most lush galaxy to build bases cause I saw so many cool bases along these rendezvous points & even tho I used the guide for portal glyphs, the community made stuff become the highlight for me as I was zipping through system tryna complete a chore list by the god Sean Murray himself. 😂

The reason for me why the expedition felt so tedious and UNFAIR, is, that everytime I started a milestone that required a certain level of hostility, coldness or height for example... I was always extremely near the requirement. My "Thunder Hooves" thingy was 6 meters, 7 were required. My coldest planet was like 2 celsius below what was needed! And I explored soo much, that these tiny little difference added up so much that it just felt unfair.

I've been saying this for a while now - I wish they made less expeditions per year(2 or 3) but higher quality. Quality over quantity as they say.

Kinda bummed this was my first expedition ngl. I went on the wiki to read up on the others and they all sounded so cool, with time loops or big events and they rewarded a unique ship or frigate or customisation effect, but all I got was a crummy pet that I have to manually summon every time I land on a planet, or if I run too far away. At least the sentinel companion teleports directly to me all the time.

I generally don't like expeditions, I REALLY didn't like this expedition. Gave up and decided to just look up portal coordinates for where the get what I needed to finish the expedition.
What really confuses me is they made witnessing unpredictable events into objectives.. it's not something you can track down or do anything to pin point where something is, you just have to land on planets and literally hope for the best. You're frustrated if nothing happens and you're confused if it does.
However, I think *maybe* this is HG's way of experimenting with making the community work with each other, since I feel like it's almost impossible to do this one on your own like I tried.

It's obvious what happened here: Hello Games were clearly worried they had a competitor in Bethesda's starfield, so knew they needed to release an update & expedition to keep current players interested and prevent them bleeding their playerbase to a separate game. Hence an expedition that takes more time than normal to complete.
Also: having released two VERY big updates prior to this one, I wouldn't be surprised if the dev team were working flat out on these and didn't have as much time to dedicate to a narrative-driven expedition or building in new mechanics. Re-using existing milestones and assets from other expeditions makes sense in this context.

This expedition was my first. I had played NMS for about 10 hours at launch but was unsatisfied and shelved it. After hearing a lot of good things about the game this fall I reinstalled the game about a month ago and have been enjoying my time so far. This expedition was my first. I don't think it was a bad experience and I enjoyed myself a fair bit but, I didn't like some of the milestones. Like the body temp one and the hostility quotient one. It took me 22 hours to complete the expedition on easily 18 of that was spent on completing those 2 milestones. I finally gave up on the hostility one and looked up the coords to complete the rewards. The "Use a Portal" milestone was a bit jarring as well since I hadn't used one yet in my main save. I am looking forward to the next one as well.

Another trenchant review, and I agree with what you've said about this one compared to the others. I guess it shows how hard it is to continually come up with new ideas & content at the rate Hello Games deliver them. I think I'd rather more, with the odd dud, than less, as I do enjoy them, particularly for the rewards. I think this expo was more like a normal experience of playing NMS, i.e. lots of planetary exploration and discoveries. I think it would reward patience and taking your time over it. The problem for me was that I'd just purchased Starfield and was itching to crack on with that, so I also did the same, looking up glyphs for the hard to find ones. NMS is going to have to take a back seat now that Starfield has taken over my life and I'm interested to see what your take on it will be.

I would love to be able to have the ability to go back and fire up any of the old expeditions that I missed out on. however, the rules of doing that to make it fair and make sure it isn't exploited in some way is you would only be allowed to start one old one after you completed the current one within the allotted expedition time, you would also only have the remaining time left in the current expedition to complete the old one. and you could only do one old one per current expidition.

I don't normally disagree with your assessments of the game, but this time I feel I must take an issue or two...
I will say that I ended up running it twice due to a couple of BAD issues with finding one particular criter that didn't allow the completion to occur. Once that was fixed it ran smoothly the second time, so my view is based on the second run.
Although I tell myself to read ALL the tasks before starting, I did not do that either time - the result, I did not get the 16 tiles to use the portal until near the end and as a result had to search the planets/moons for the criters instead of jumping to the points given out by several frustrated people due to the bug that occurred in the first run - that turned out to be fun in itself.
I liked the fact that the runs to each exposition point was shorter than in the past - that was nice.
I don't speed through the game, any game, so my time is not relevant to anyone except me, but I thought it went not too fast, not too slow. I thought there was a little story there and that is OK with me - I see these expeditions as a way for new people to get into the game with a good start and an easy training cycle. I especially liked that in order to run everything in the release, you had to have done at least two of the main story lines in order to understand the history of the lore involved.
One major issue - "NMS... Don't give any more hints - you never got them right and caused a lot of confusion".
I still will stay with my 7.5 out of 10 for the Expedition and a little higher for the entire release.

I did not like it the first time through, it was frustrating and I searched dozens of systems looking for the hostile planet. Then I thought to do some research with my other saves. I found a proper planet Glyph address in my old save and portaled to the planet. So one time down. I then started and completed it a second time and really enjoyed it the second time. So, I suggest you try it again, you may like it. I am off to do it a third time. I guess I like grinding. (That's what she said.) :)

I am enjoying the expedition. I understood what it was going to be intuitively, It was going to 7 years of updates and changes. All the expeditions always have repeats. I looked over the phases and knew man this is going to be some exploration. The whole point is it is a walkthrough of what they have done over 7 years. That it is a repeat was the whole point. They made it harder by adding hot blood, and poison blood, I deliberately didn't use the findings of others I found them myself. I thought I would never find 80u underwater, I hit 60 and 50 over and over. You bet I made a base for those who would rather do it the easy way. I actually enjoyed the grind. I am still looking for the hateful planet and I finally just found the hottest animal one. I have managed to do all the expeditions and caught what I didn't have in Redux, I only need Expedition 1. I hope they do Expedition 1-6 this time if they do a Redux. I actually have 3 expeditions going on at the same time with friends. doing them the way they want to. 1 is using the work of others, the other is a new player, 1 is for me, wandering and exporting.

IS ANYONE ELSE having this bug....
The game no longer recognizes the completion of past expeditions nor all my quicksilver purchases.
The saves that have everything already still have it... but I am not able to claim anything in the expedition. Its not recognizing my progress across saves. Everything in the quicksilver shop has a price by it now, like I never bought it. All my expedition rewards are locked and it says the expeditions havent been completed. Same with the Freighter Salvage guy's stuff. Its as though I never claimed any of it.

I don’t know the game well and I’m not very creative so I wouldn’t comment on how difficult it is or isn’t to create new experiences within open world games.
But I’m used to doing repetitive tasks in every open world game and as long as I’m loving the gameplay and going for rewards or experience or loot then I’d play all day if I could.
I wonder if, when creators get sick of repeating tasks if they’re just sick of the gameplay and need a break.
When the wine has no taste and the food has no flavour you need a change of scene.
I’ve just rediscovered the game because I’ve stumped up for a PSVR2 and boy, if you’re not already playing it in VR then that might put the steam back in your stride! Doing anything is thrilling in NMS through PSVR2! Just “looking over there” is a thrill ride. 10/10 would recommend 🤓

I'm not sick of repeating tasks; I do that all the time on my main save. I was disappointed to see that the quality of the expedition was lower than the last 5 we've received. I love playing No Man's Sky. This expedition didn't feel like it was worth leaving my main save for 10 hours though. Most expeditions feel not only worth it, but more than worth the time. I even mention that just about the only positive of this expedition is that the milestones aren't grindy. The negatives are the random nature of success and the lack of unique elements. Most expeditions have something new that I wish I could see in the base game; this expedition, though, doesn't have anything that isn't already on my main save.
Truth be told, I don't play enough video games on a weekly basis to need a break from any game. If anything, the expedition was frustrating because it used up my limited No Man's Sky time on something underwhelming. If you saw my review of NMS Echoes, you'd know I'm perfectly happy with the state of the game. It's just this expedition felt poorly-themed and undercooked. Nothing wrong with enjoying it yourself though. I did go out of my way in the video to state that it isn't *bad*, just underwhelming to me.
I do agree though that No Man's Sky was made for VR. The experience is enhanced in every way by the tech. Thanks for watching and commenting!
