Inside Veere Grenney's 18th-Century Palladian Folly | Design Notes

- Veere Grenney welcomes us into his Palladian folly located near Stoke-by-Nayland on the borders of Suffolk and Essex. Built by Sir Robert Taylor in the 1760s, the Temple of the Four Seasons, as it is formally known, is surrounded by pendulous greenery and a vast canal extending some two-hundred yards from the facade.
As we tour the interior, it is hard not to appreciate the symmetry and proportions of this expertly staged building - from the drawing room overlooking the central canal to the oeil-de-boeuf window in the kitchen. A labour of love, the Temple is Veere Grenney’s personal sanctuary: ‘There wouldn’t be ever a moment where I just don’t love it… To live with this view and in this place, that appears to be untouched by the rest of the world, is pretty rare.’ Watch the full episode of ‘Design Notes’ as we tour Veere Grenney’s secluded Palladian folly in Suffolk.

This man must be the most cultured, refined ex-hippie who ever lived. With an exquisite eye and sensibility and an understanding of tasteful restraint. This all seems like something from another time, inviolate and untouched. I especially love the view and vanishing point down the canal with the hedges flanking.

It is lovely. Colors are creamy and gorgeous. Upholstery beautiful. Molding, ceiling, busts, speaks volumes. Manicured shrubs, and private gardens, such a delight!

Timeless: that is an elusive definition that is referred to in design, and everything about this extraordinary residence defines that quality. It will look just as fresh 40 years from now, as it did 40 years ago. It is supremely edited with just enough furnishings, and artwork, and no more. It is also very light in feeling or mood. Its all of a piece: the architecture, the furnishings, the gardens, and utterly enchanting.
Definitely a charmed life to have left NZ with naught and arrived in you Palladian dream!

Loved the house, gardens and man! Then. He had to mention having his dahlias covered with manure and surviving winter and being many years old and I am now obsessed with this idea. I really want to know exactly what his friend does, as this is not a usual storage method! Reverse hotbed🤔🤔🤔Brilliant!

This Mr Grenney is just delightful and i can’t explain how wonderful it feels to be in that house. Of course it is the wonderful architecture that is put first and the color certainly shows it off in its best light. Thank goodness for the old days that people would take on apprentices , it is not possible to do this in the Uber corporate world of everything has to look alike and none of these internet people that call themselves decorators have any single thought of their own
