I don't know if you get any big projects but if you are ever stuck Mark for someone who can help in delivering a large scale pond, stream or waterfall I would be very happy to jump on board and assist in its construction. ha ha, yes they are, its funny how quickly they find a body of water without predators, now the same pond doesn't have any, crazy to think I guess its like anything the food has to be in place first then the rest of the food chain begins
Hi, really enjoy your videos! We are in the process ourselves of building a wildlife pond, the first one, and wondered if it would attract more wildlife if we added a small pump to keep the water moving. Just thinking of keeping the water oxygenated. Any advice is much appreciated.
Love your videos! I've just watched 6 in a row. My only advice to you would be to find a way to match the volume of your music with the rest of the video. Besides that the work itself is flawless. Just subbed!
Marc, I’ve built my koi pond successful. I have a preformed loner that I want for wildlife. My son dug the hole and put it in for me. I have not filled it yet because I want to landscape around it. My dilemma is that it is in a shady area underneath a tree. What can I do to prevent leaves from entering into the pond. I can’t run electricity to it so I have a solar fountain along with some oxygenating plants to go in the pond. I don’t want to put a net because the wildlife can’t get in. Should I put a low patio umbrella over it? Help. Anything to help the wildlife.
KELLY PENA I would put a net over only as the leaves are falling, most of the aquatic wildlife will be out of the pond that time of the year, I have a couple of clients that open it up during the day and covering it at night!
I am soon doing a small wild life pond. I am in zone 6 in the U.S.. What do you do in the winter with the pond? Do you keep the pump running ? Thanks!!!
Diane D the little pump is only for sound, drop the pump to the bottom of the pond in the winter, here in the UK we are zone 8 so we just switch it off
Hi great video, I noted there was no filter installed on this build.. could you explain why.. thinking of doing something very similar but would like a a small amount of fish in it.. secondly what’s your view on hoselock bioforce filters? Would a bioforce filter with adapted plumbing to create a mystery low flow water fall be ok... I don’t yet fully understand the concept of the pond scimmers and on initial review the bioforce filter systems seem a bit more efficient over a waterfall filtration system... apologies for the lengthy enquiry... Your videos are class and your work is amazing. Thank you in advance any guidance would be very much appreciated. Regards Nigel
no filter? plants are natural filters, these with micro organisms keep the water sweet. I cant comment on the hoselock filters, the last time i used them was 15 years ago, now i see too many ponds that are not working for the pond owners. The eco system style of pond is way better from a maintenance point of view, not looked back, the two systems are polar opposite
Thanks Pond Advisor, great vid-I'd like to build something like that over my allotment, but have no power ! Any tips on solar powered pumps? Cheers mate.
Love this! I’m wondering if the little fountain is solar powered? If not, could you suggest a good one that is really small (for a pond even smaller than this one!)?
I have a wildlife pond that I recently made 12 inches deep in the deepest part. Would this be a large problem or will wildlife still be attracted to it?
I'd like to make one of these but the only thing concerning me would be the mosquito's because I live in Florida and they just love the water. Plus I don't want to add any fish cause we have a lot of outdoor cats in our neighborhood and I don't want to be providing said cats with a free meal. Any suggestions?
Hi, we have been inspired by your great video and are digging a pond for our small garden. We love the idea of the basket - where do you source it (is it a pond-specific product, or do we have to just have to hunt out two baskets?) and what kind of pump do you recommend? And what power does a pond this size need? Is it a pump that filters too or is that not necessary - slightly overwhelmed by the choices! Thank you.
depends on what you want this was a little feature pump to simply add a little movement and oxygen, you can add a filter if you wish, the wildlife ponds don't need much. i have other videos on what filter or pump
@@ThePondAdvisor Thank you very much. I think that's basically what we're thinking - a little bit of movement by not much. I'll look at your other videos, as you suggest.
Cloverleaf actually does the job - pretty sure it's based on diatomaceous earth. The algae will melt in days. Then you might have to do some sludge clearing. Whether green or string, algae is a sign of nutrients in the pond. The more other plants, the less algae.
Hi, good video, thanks. So I don't need a filter just a pump to aerated the water to give oxygen & I suppose it also helps stop it freezing ? 'Mechanisation!' 😆 I think you meant 'mechanism!'. You say BASICALLY a lot! I'm digging mine & have so far got to 16 inches deep, how far to you recommend I go? Shall I have a shallow end? Thanks
@@ThePondAdvisor Thanks. I want to attract Newts & Frogs. I've work out that the water area is around 550 litre, in the winter months surely I can use a large aquarium heater to stop it freezing?
Beautifully well done. I'd love to volunteer with you sometime. Could you advise me on the plants that you use, where, and the ratios? Do you use UK native plants?
We have open days, training events and informal lunch and learns, we have our first pond side chat and lunch and learn coming up on the 18th July email me mark@anypond.com for more information on our events
Hi Mark, please advise… I’m building a wildlife pond but my sand in Dorset is very sandy and stoney, the sides keep falling in. How can I hold the sides up before the liner and water goes in please? Thanks
I'm in Canada and wondering what would occur in the winter? Not uncommon to have weeks of -20 or so. How deep would you have to go for anything to survive the freeze?
Buy stone from all over, close by garden centres if it’s a small pond like this and I need up to a dozen boulders Waterfall foam waterfeature.shop/products/pro-waterfall-foam-sealant?_pos=1&_sid=fcf4ce522&_ss=r
This video has really helped putting my pond in this week thanks. One question, I really like the water feature you’ve created with the pump, how far below the surface is the top of the pump? Thanks.
Nice video Would filtered tap water do instead of rainwater? Also how to avoid mosquitos laying eggs in the pond and wasps coming for water in the summer?
We have an existing wildlife pond which we now need to relocate but also realise we bought a prefab fish pond so we're digging a new pond in the new location. We're going to transfer over the water from the old pond to preserve the wildlife. Is this possible? What is the grey coloured sealant type product you use in the video please?
Sir, I was just watching one of your videos that look like a round pond with blocks and now I can't find it I wanted to show it to my husband it is a pond that you were redoing and you were removing all the blocks
Do you have any good resources on puddling clay? I'm working on a small wildlife pond in my front yard here in the states and I'm using clay(as I have basically unlimited access to clay haha) instead of using a liner and for the life of me, I can't find anything on puddling clay for a small pond. I could also be searching totally wrong haha. I figured you might have some resources or info! Thanks!
No we work a long side some estate maintenance company’s that will do it. I would recommend digging a test hole. Fill the hole with water and test or put some water in to make a big mess lol. We build everything using rubber as it’s less maintenance and moving clay around is not easy.
I'm making a wildlife pond at the minute. Just dug down into 2 to 3 levels (some kind of joining in places) The bottom part is 60cm deep and the first level is about 8-9inches deep. Is this too deep for a first level?
marianne froholdt this version or pond style is for aquatic wildlife, so in this type of pond I would not recommend any fish, but a fish pond of this size would be ok to keep a few goldfish or goldfish size fish. But this all depends on we’re you live and the climate zone, do you want to keep native fish or ornamental species.
@@ThePondAdvisor it looks very nice, mosquitos are happy :) any small fish can live there and eat this little blooddrinkers asholes :) sory for my english, grettings from Poland
Great videos Do you always have to put the larger rocks on to another layer of underlay? does the foam cement not stick to the liner? And would you advise which cement you use please.
HH HH no you don’t always have to put the rocks on over lay, but it’s a good habit, the foam will stick to anything, but on the over lay it’s much better, and you don’t have any problems or worries
The Pond Advisor maybe y’all have a different experience with mosquitos than we do here in Texas 🤣 we won’t even go outside if they are bad and they get bad when people leave sitting water around there houses
I am not sure, you may be able to get it online. On a side note is Virginia Water Gardens close to you? Charlie and Net Ross are good friends of mine. So if you happen to call in say hello from the pond advisor! They have a nice retail store and also build lovely ponds and water features.
Hi pond enthusiasts I need a bit of advice please (sorry this might be a bit long winded). 2 years ago I had to move my pond and due to time constraints I had to basically make a concrete bucket in the ground roughy 1m cubed. It is a terrible pond with nowhere to put plants. Because frogs and newts breed in there I haven’t been turning the filter on (as it eats the tadpoles) and the algae gets really bad. Anyways, last year the algae was that bad in the pond it killed pretty much all the tadpoles so I’ve decided to rebuild my pond properly. My issue is I am finally able to afford the materials and also the time to do it but there is loads of spawn in my pond. I was thinking of moving this spawn into a temp pool while while I carry out the work as quickly as possible. I have been collecting rainwater which has now filled the temp pool and this will have plants in (which will be put in the new pond). So yeah that my issue :) any thoughts or tips? Im scared if I don’t do it now, all the tadpoles will die again. I’m so scared I’m going to scare all the frogs and newts off and they’ll never come back. Any advice would be really appreciated! Thank you
Move the spawn before it’s to later. Keep as much pond water as possible (higher than the new pond). Improve the pond and bucket the tadpole’s or syphon the lot via a large pipe (we use 50mm or above flexible pipe).
The Pond Advisor thanks mate. Not sure what you mean by “higher than the new pond” but got everything else 😅 thank you for your help. I’ve learnt so much from your videos!
If you can build the temporary pond/pool higher than the current or new pond water level you will not have to pump the water back into the pond, so if you have tadpoles you can simply bucket them back in. I guess it depends how much spawn you currently have!
The Pond Advisor ahhh I see what you mean now! There’s a fair amount of spawn but I’ll do anything to keep them safe. I’ll pick them out one by one if I have to 😅
Hey, i am super interested in building my own pond but I don't have much knowledge on anything....will I need a pump to help maintain my pond or is that optional?
I don’t have a power source for a pump. I’ve seen sole powered pumps but I’m concerned about them sucking up insects and frogspawn or tadpoles. Is there any other type of pump I can use?
Yes, build it and they will come, you need to built the pond for the food of other aquatic life. It’s just like trying to set up an African plain and expecting to only see the top 5 predators. In a balanced ecosystem you need to attract and provide for the food and shelter for everything.
if you have any questions about this build or wildlife ponds fire away. Are you currently making a small wildlife pond or thinking about one
How long does it take to keep the plastic (linear) before changing it? If I do not have water pump still o.k?

I don't know if you get any big projects but if you are ever stuck Mark for someone who can help in delivering a large scale pond, stream or waterfall I would be very happy to jump on board and assist in its construction.
I do various elements of design work and would love the chance to get a hand in on a project your end.
Cheers for the great video
Fresh Impact Co. yes we do build larger wildlife ponds we have a few showcases here on RUclips.
But if your more talking about earth lined ponds then no we don’t really get involved with these types of wildlife ponds.

Those mosquito larva are loving it! scratch scratch.
ha ha, yes they are, its funny how quickly they find a body of water without predators, now the same pond doesn't have any, crazy to think I guess its like anything the food has to be in place first then the rest of the food chain begins

Very helpful video, thank you. Why do you put the waterfall foam around the rocks, is it just to keep them in place?
yes, little bit more safe, so they don't move as much

Hi, really enjoy your videos! We are in the process ourselves of building a wildlife pond, the first one, and wondered if it would attract more wildlife if we added a small pump to keep the water moving. Just thinking of keeping the water oxygenated. Any advice is much appreciated.
Yes, absolutely, with the double-pot method or intake bay
Love your videos! I've just watched 6 in a row. My only advice to you would be to find a way to match the volume of your music with the rest of the video. Besides that the work itself is flawless. Just subbed!
Handy Man we have been working on it.
Thanks for your feed back,
Yes. I noticed in over videos that you seem to have fixed the issue. Like I said, I'm a big fan now!
Did you use glue on the stones? What's the safest for wildlife? Also, what's the estimated lifespan of those liners? Thanks, enjoyed it very much!
liner is a lifetime, I use waterfall foam
@@ThePondAdvisor Thank you very much.
Great stuff!
Fishing_bug thank you
I am soon doing a small wild life pond.
The eco system style of pond is way better from a maintenance point of view, not looked back, the two systems are polar opposite
thanks bruv

Thanks Pond Advisor, great vid-I'd like to build something like that over my allotment, but have no power ! Any tips on solar powered pumps? Cheers mate.
Ralph Winter you don’t need any power for a plant only wildlife pond, the fountain pump is purely for sound!

Awesome video man ! Would not using a pump cause algae overgrow ? Im debating on building a pond without a pump
A pump will move the water around helping feed the plants, but from a wildlife point of view they prefer no pumps. It’s all about balance.
If u have shade u won’t get the algae try planting Xmas cactus in a pot really need shade for a wildlife pond..u don’t need a pump
This was fantastic! Would old bricks be alright to use in conjunction with stones? Would 100%rain water be better than 1/2 and 1/2?
Yes bricks are ok engineering bricks are best. 1/2 and 1/2 is best as the 100% rain is lacking in minerals, calcium
You didn't show it, but did you take any frogs, newts or any creatures out of the old pond?
They was a couple of frogs.
The6 will find their own way there..
Love this! I’m wondering if the little fountain is solar powered? If not, could you suggest a good one that is really small (for a pond even smaller than this one!)?
We currently don't have a solar pump we recommend
This is so cute bro
Giobel Koi Center thank you
You're welcome, I love your wok
I have a wildlife pond that I recently made 12 inches deep in the deepest part. Would this be a large problem or will wildlife still be attracted to it?
its fantastic for frogs
does that bubbler fountain oxygenate the water still? if so i like how you isolated it from the rest of the pond.
Yes the pump moves water around if not as efficient as possible however
I'd like to make one of these but the only thing concerning me would be the mosquito's because I live in Florida and they just love the water. Plus I don't want to add any fish cause we have a lot of outdoor cats in our neighborhood and I don't want to be providing said cats with a free meal. Any suggestions?
moving the surface
I'll look at your other videos, as you suggest.
nice
thanks
Great job how do I get rid of green alge strings there's alot of it need help asap
It depends on the type of string algae I do have s could of video in my algae video playlist. We use a product call multi Clear to control algae.
Cloverleaf actually does the job - pretty sure it's based on diatomaceous earth. The algae will melt in days. Then you might have to do some sludge clearing. Whether green or string, algae is a sign of nutrients in the pond. The more other plants, the less algae.
@@marinaorgan589 you have totally got it more plants less algae and less maintenance, work with mother nature
Thanks
Basically 18” is good, lol
If your wanting wildlife (aquatic insects) yes lots of shallow water. The shallower the better as long as you have some water 18” deep.
How deep would you have to go for anything to survive the freeze?
lots of plants will grow in these conditions, check out your local aquatic nurseries
Strewth!!,these animals are very demanding, are we sure they don't need a steam room and sauna as well!?😀😁😉
Build it and they will come!
Love your videos. Is a completely shaded wildlife pond possible with plants?
John Griffiths look into green foliage pond plants. Lots of ferns and leafy plants around if the soil is damp
I have a question for you where do you buy the large boulders from, and what type of spray foam do you use, and where do you buy it from ...
Buy stone from all over, close by garden centres if it’s a small pond like this and I need up to a dozen boulders
Waterfall foam

This video has really helped putting my pond in this week thanks. One question, I really like the water feature you’ve created with the pump, how far below the surface is the top of the pump? Thanks.
4”
Nice video
Would filtered tap water do instead of rainwater?
Also how to avoid mosquitos laying eggs in the pond and wasps coming for water in the summer?
Moving the surface will help, but we we want dragonflies and damsel fly food. These ponds don’t tend to suffer from mosquitoes
@@ThePondAdvisor Ok thanks!
Concerning the tap water, would you suggest it as an alternative for rain water?
@@someonesomewhere8888 both, a mix is best, if it’s all rain water is very soft and contains no minerals
Hi, thanks for fantastic ideas. Can I ask what is the name of song in your video?
I am not sure, sorry I am a pond guy, I just liked it!
Hi Mark, could you please tell me what I can do to prevent from having mosquito larvae. I'm allergic to mosquito bites. Thanks.
Moving water, the adults don’t lay eggs on moving water.
You make a very goon pond well done
Thank you
If i have any questions, what are measurments in the metric system?
6' is 1.8m and 4' is 1.2m so the pond was 1.8m by 1.2m by 30cm or 45cm deep
We have an existing wildlife pond which we now need to relocate but also realise we bought a prefab fish pond so we're digging a new pond in the new location. We're going to transfer over the water from the old pond to preserve the wildlife. Is this possible? What is the grey coloured sealant type product you use in the video please?
Yes you can, the mature pond water will be great, glad your changing the fish pond, the grey foam is our black waterfall foam

Sir, I was just watching one of your videos that look like a round pond with blocks and now I can't find it I wanted to show it to my husband it is a pond that you were redoing and you were removing all the blocks
How to build a fish pond (I think), let me know if that’s the one!
Could goldfish and frogs live side by side in a pond like this?
yes and no, they can but live in the same pond.
The frogs wouldn't mind spawning in a pond with goldfish in it?
no as long as you have some nice shallow water out the way of the fish, like a barrier reef@@COJY06
The Pond Advisor brilliant, thanks for your help 👌🏻

U again have answered my question thank you 🇬🇧
Do you have any good resources on puddling clay? I'm working on a small wildlife pond in my front yard here in the states and I'm using clay(as I have basically unlimited access to clay haha) instead of using a liner and for the life of me, I can't find anything on puddling clay for a small pond. I could also be searching totally wrong haha. I figured you might have some resources or info! Thanks!
No we work a long side some estate maintenance company’s that will do it. I would recommend digging a test hole. Fill the hole with water and test or put some water in to make a big mess lol. We build everything using rubber as it’s less maintenance and moving clay around is not easy.
Such an informative video, thank you. Is there a best time of year to build a new pond?
theurbanghost yes same as a tree, seven years ago, the next best time is now! The quicker you get it in the better.
@@ThePondAdvisor Thanks for the reply :)
do you go to people's homes to make these. its beautiful
Yes 👍🏻 we do
I'm making a wildlife pond at the minute. Just dug down into 2 to 3 levels (some kind of joining in places) The bottom part is 60cm deep and the first level is about 8-9inches deep. Is this too deep for a first level?
Yes and No dig it out to that level then create planting pockets or shallower levels with the rock work.
Is there an upper limit to amount of flow that that 2 pot filter can take? Likely will be using a 1200LPH.
yes, you can use 1200 litre you will have to clean the pot out sooner, plus use the best quality ones
Love your ponds! what adhesive do you use to set the rocks in place?
Tyson Benton black waterfall foam, waterfeature.shop/collections/installation
What kind of fish can live in a smal pond like this?
marianne froholdt this version or pond style is for aquatic wildlife, so in this type of pond I would not recommend any fish, but a fish pond of this size would be ok to keep a few goldfish or goldfish size fish. But this all depends on we’re you live and the climate zone, do you want to keep native fish or ornamental species.
I have a couple of goldfish pond videos of a similar size.
The Pond Advisor Thank you.
Beautiful 🥰 but I hope they added fish bc the pond is full of mosquito larvae
No they wanted dragonflies, not a fish pond with wildlife
The Pond Advisor maybe y’all have a different experience with mosquitos than we do here in Texas 🤣 we won’t even go outside if they are bad and they get bad when people leave sitting water around there houses
They hate moving water, aeration is the best, you can have a fish pond with wildlife life but you can’t have a wildlife pond with fish in!
Where to get the gravel liner?
I brought mine from my local garden centre. Where about are you in the world?
Virginia, USA.
I am not sure, you may be able to get it online. On a side note is Virginia Water Gardens close to you? Charlie and Net Ross are good friends of mine. So if you happen to call in say hello from the pond advisor! They have a nice retail store and also build lovely ponds and water features.
How do you address the problem of mosquito larva/mosquito breeding in the pond, if you don't mind my asking?
In the U.K. we don’t have a massive problem like a lot of places. We encourage the other wildlife into our gardens that feast on the mozzies.
Nice video but what would have helped is some dimensions such as max depth, ideal depth of shelves I am building a frog pond
Paul Tavener frogs love shallow water, temporary bodies of water are great for frogs in the UK as well. Toads like deeper water 18” or 45cm
Many thanks

Is there any other type of pump I can use?
the double pot, as explained in the video will help
How much you build a small pond like this one ?
Our wildlife pond packages start at £1499 but if you building one yourself then you can buy the materials for a few hundred pounds.
What type of pump did you use here to create that effect?
small feature pump
Looks great, but those are mosquito larbie lol
Yes, build it and they will come, you need to built the pond for the food of other aquatic life. It’s just like trying to set up an African plain and expecting to only see the top 5 predators. In a balanced ecosystem you need to attract and provide for the food and shelter for everything.
What is that white thing?
Pond underlayment
