Excellent tutorial, thank you, very much obliged for it . In 2001, the University of Stellenbosch (my alma mater) received in gift an F-1CZ, and I both got to sit in its cockpit, as well as seeing the Cyrano outside of the nose cone - for a 1970's radar it was a very sophisticated beast. Looking forward to mastering it.
We seem to be crossing paths on DCS F1 videos, but where'd they park the F1 at Maties? I was there, but *cough giving away my age* before 2001. I'd imagine it's not open to anybody.....I got to sit in one at AFB Swartkops during a demo. It's a tight fit! I don't think the canopy could have closed fully on my head, think I'm a bit tall for it. Wish I had a photo!
@@Shrike200 F-1CZ No. 207 was sent to the Engineering Department in 2001. I saw it get towed in. Commandant Dick Lord came to Stellenbosch in 2001 to promote his book 'Vlamgat' - after his lecture, we traipsed down to the Aeronautic Hall in the campus-facing block, wandered around the F-1, and then each got a chance to sit in it after we asked nicely. Commandant Lord advised that max pilot height was 6'4", and I am 6'2" - the secret is that the seat can move a full foot up and down for height - I also got to play and feel everything, an experience I treasure.
Another great tutorial. And yes, it would be a cold war era bird without seemingly random switch locations, unclear or ambiguous symbology, modes and weapon switching that was clearly shoehorned in as it was developing, and random lights and gauges scattered in every direction. Great!
I don't bother with all the other tutorials. I don't need history lessons or scenario setups...Just get into it immediately. RK, you're tutorials are my go to. Thank you for showing us only what matters
Superb video as ever, chap! Love how your tutorials have evolved, the graphic overlays and "moving diagrams" are the best yet -- commercial-grade! Keep doing your great work.
No problem! The Aerges manual is a little technical and certainly not a user's guide to operating, so was a little tricky to understand some of the finer points.
Holy ergonomics Mirage. Did the engineering teams just not talk to each other? It's like they looked at a Mig-21 cockpit and asked themselves, "can I make this more confusing?".
Bad news Gentlepeoples! The Mirage F1ce Was due to release today (20th) But it's sadly been delayed, as the next DCS Open beta patch has been pushed back to the 21st: forum.dcs.world/topic/233848-patch-status/
Great presentation. I'm starting to be amazed by all the people taking on tutorial videos. As a layman I need a few reps from slightly different angles and I dare say the community provides.
It's a difficult and easily overwhelming hobby to get into. We all remember the struggle to become competent. I want to pay that back to the community for helping me in the past.
Actually the radar does gives the altitude of the scanning by the use of the dénivelé mode, in which instead of E you will have a D in the radar scope box and adding increments will set an altitude for the scan and vise versa. D + 01 equals the scan is being done 1000ft above your line of sight.
Whilst true, it's not quite that simple either. At any rate the radar elevation modes are not working 100% as intended yet either, so they'll be covered in the 'advanced' radar tutorial some point later!
Great vid 😀 . I love Cold War stuff. I’d be tempted into online if it wasn’t so dominated by phoenix and spamrams. It’s like the sparrow never existed from what I hear.
IMHO there is slight mistake in the order. 10:33 about the Magic and Matra 530F missiles switch is by default in hot-start a Magic one, so in 06:10 moment with M.G.FUS and M.D buttons you select Magic missile first, and not the 530. So using radar to lock a target is only to get intercept guidance, but you are trying to get a Magic missile lock on heat target. So 09:24 position is mode you are in the begin, like 10:03 is indicating. I as well found that Aerges has not yet animated all the throttle or stick buttons and corresponding covers. This makes it difficult to see by pressing bindings that what position they really are pressing. As IMHO those animations are one of the most important ones, as it makes easy to see you have set your bindings correctly. I skipped first time that "Bomb/Missile/Recorder" etc trigger, as it sounded so much about "start recording the video with those". And wondered why couldn't release weapons. One thing that I always would like to see in the manuals etc, is to get a real controller shown, and then what each of their switches, buttons and hats does in DCS terms. So I can bind the realistic functions to proper positions.
Great tutorial, I have just scored some air victories with F1 too. But I have two questions: 1. Radar scale key bindings switch only between max and min range. You need to use a mouse to switch between all radar ranges. Do you have this issue too? 2. Is it possible to slave an IR missile seeker to a radar-locked target?
very nice video, in the vid you said you would do a video about the elevation of the radar because ive tried few time to get echos from target at different altitude and i never managed to get thoses echos even tho ive done the math calculation with the difference of altiitude and distance to know the exact angle i should aim for in order to have echos but, never managed to get any echos at different altitudes.. any ideas ?
I love the radar noise; it makes it actually seem like an older, pre-computer, un-filtered set. I am curious, though: is the noise on the radar just randomly determined, or is it actually dynamically generated by the terrain/weather/atmospheric conditions in-game?
On the moment it seems to be pregenerated. I do hope that in the future Aerges manages to find time to make it more dynamic and more confusing to find the target depending their RCS that is received.
Nice tutorial, this add on wants to make me get dcs and the mirage f1 module, but I think it will be overwhelming ? Been only flying civil aircraft on msfs and xplane 11
There's not much in DCS that isn't a little overwhelming, but, the Mirage F1 is, honestly, a good starting point for getting in, its got enough capabilities that you can do a little bit of everything on MP, its a joy to fly, and its not overly complex (as someone who flies the Viggen, A-10, Hind, and Apache frequently) as a full fidelity module.
The radar noise, as in the individual dots are so much larger and more sparse on my screen, it makes it really hard to see the returns. I wonder if they changed that in an update or if it's something to do with my graphics settings.
You can select it, but it's not functional. E and D modes for elevation both work, but otherwise everything i showed in this video is your lot at EA release.
Mine is not automatically locking after selecting the telemeter switch. I see the radar is in the right position but nothing locks when I get behind the plane
I'm still confused about the magic or sidewinder switch on the armament control panel. In which situation should it be set to M or A? Is it M for Magic and A for sidewinder?
"Radar elevation is a topic for a more in depth video" god is it ever. I haven't been able to reliably track targets with an altitude difference outside what 4-bar can detect normally since I started flying the thing, so I hope that video comes sooner rather than later. I think I understand how it's supposed to work, but in practice it doesn't work for me at all.
I feel like you just fired a fire hose at me, I'm more confused now then I was before I watched this. Do I need to get another joystick just to use the radar in this plane? How have you guys assigned your controls?
I just bind them to my throttle, with the stick controls on the mini-stick. I've been thinking of doing a familiarisation and controls video some point soon.
Just bought it, but it needs to be installed in a open beta DCS setup. Bummer, I have only the release version and don't want to change that. Any idea if it will compatible with the release version of DCS at some point ?
Why are there so little training missions.. not that big of a deal but why isn't anybody doing it like razbam, they know how to make training missions for there modules.
Awesome video! Can you pre--select sidewinders and magics along with the 530s to pre-cool them before an engagement? Or does selecting the 530s deselect the wingtip magic/sidewinders? Otherwise if you went into the close combat button mode you would have to wait 20 seconds for them to cool, correct? (Unless you did an air start where they are pre-cooled)
The magics/sidewinders are cooled with a separate button so that they will be ready regardless of which you switch to them. It's switch #6 on page 71 of the Aerges manual
