  • Unless you’ve completed medical school and are a doctor yourself, you probably believe various stereotypes across surgical specialties and have a distorted perception of the personality types of surgeons. Some stereotypes are true, but most aren’t. This is the truth about each specialty.

That is a Running Joke that surgeons can’t properly read an ECG since they only look for the General Well Being of the patient in the Pre or Post Operative period and only see the EKG to make sure the Patient doesn’t have any condition that predisposes to Clot formation (like FA)
But they won’t diagnose a Second Grade Mobitz Type 2 AV Block since they tend to ask an Internist to read the EKG at times
I personally want to be a General Surgeon, but many people have told me that I think more like an Internal Medicine Doctor

So these five doctors decide to go duck hunting. While waiting, they agree to take turns when shooting. After a bit, some ducks show up...
The GP gets ready to shoot, but then thinks, "Is that a duck? I'd better get a second opinion." The duck gets away.
The Ob-gyn gets ready to shoot, but then thinks "What if the duck getting ready to lay? Can't do it!" The duck gets away.
The psychologist gets ready to shoot, but then thinks "I know it's a duck, but does it know it's a duck?" The duck gets away.
The surgeon gets ready to shoot, and BLAMM. The duck falls to the ground.

Dr. Jamal I have watched a substantial number of your video's, and have thoroughly enjoyed them. Gave me a more current and freshened perspective on a number of different aspects related to education and becoming established in the practice of medicine in general and surgery in particular. I feel that your discussions are, generally speaking, oriented more towards surgery. However, you are, after all, a plastic surgeon. It would seem that a great deal of medicine, has remained unchanged, while at the same time the computer, IT has greatly impacted how students go about accessing & assimilating knowledge. Even with the enhancements gained to both teaching and learning, much still relies on the motivation and diligence of the individual to gain a solid foot hold academically. I also feel that American med school grads would still benefit by learning and applying the "scientific method". I did two fellowships in UK. But, a graduate degree in a basic science would add too many years to an already long course of study. I must tell you that my difficulty in gaining admission to med school and immediate enrollment in a Ph.D. program in clinical biochem. was the best thing that could have happened to me. Made all the difference for me to begin medical education having first completed an earned doctorate.
Well, I wish you well in your business and surgical careers. It would be great if you could add some discussion on the "third" branch of the profession, there's plenty on 2 branches, namely medicine and surgery, but only a mere mention of the 3rd, that would be pathology,
my area of endeavor, maybe I could gain some insight into how I fell in, back in 1980.
My boy just completed int. med at R.I.Hosp/Brown U. in June; cardio. fellow now, then card
electrophys fellow after. Thanks. Best Wishes.

Just a quick mention that another popular reason for choosing gen surg is to do more rural medicine. Not every hospital has a neurosurgery clinic, some are in small cities where gen surg sees and does a lot.

I had to take the MRI & Xrays to my Neurosurgeon upon initial consolt. His office was the penthouse suite on Ventura Blvd in Encino. The elevator opened and I thought I was in a museum . The entire floor was his office. There was a gorgous receptionist, fine leather sofas, beautiful artifacts everywhere, sculptures, paintings and I was the only client. Impressive, to say the least. His surgury on me was flawless and his fee was six figures for 3 &1/2 hrs in 1996.
28 years later, not a single bad after effect.
