Tyson Chandler was supposed to be the next kevin Garnett coming out of highschool I believe Chicago destroyed his confidence offensively and all he had left to stay in the leauge is play defense
there wasn't a lot of hype that I know of around Tyson Chandler. But he developed into a good player. Was a key component in Dallas getting their only championship. And not keeping him was a key component in why they haven't come close to getting back. Centers take longer to develop anyway. They can't work on individual moves by themselves like other positions can. Being the biggest on the court they need another big person to really thoroughly work on things. So coming out of high school where it's even rarer to go against a similar size player makes it even worse. Dwight Howard should've played in college. It would've help his career long problem with bad footwork and being off balance posting up with his back to the basket.
@@gregorylagrangeChandler was definitely being touted coming outta HS (and was expected to be like a KG). I was in HS around the same time. 100% with Gil. You want someone to GIVE you a chance rather than TRYING to earn more minutes. Accept the challenge or sit on the bench and deflect your misfortune towards others. If you’re not built to fight for what you want then you’re not built for the league. And that’s why Darko was a BUST.
Or Detroit just sucks at young player development why waste a draft pick if you know you not goos play them they would of been better of trading the pick for a piece to complement their crew
You can be 100% with whatever gil named scrubs he had to get passed compared to the Hof caliber players in front of darko and why draft a player first you aren't going to develop correctly sounds idiotic
Gil got to play because he was in a losing situation. Detroit was winning and playing for a chip. They didn't have time for a rookie to get ready. Darko played behind both Wallace's, and Okur. Who was a dog when he left. Only Melo would have played. Splitting minutes with Prince
That’s still on Darko tho. Play with effort when the time comes. Jermaine O’Neal was on the bench for 4 years & still became a multiple time all star. It’s mentality.

Even when Darko was drafted, many commentators questioned the pick because what the roster was and the coach was notorious for NOT playing rookies.. Darko was just put in a shit situation from jump
I've been saying that myself for years. Darko was set up to fail from the jump. Larry Brown generally wouldn't play rookies and he loved to instigate stupid mind games with players too. LeBron, Carmelo, Wade, Bosh, and all those other solid to good dudes wouldn't have had a chance to play. Melo really would've had problems there given all the off the court shit and legal drama he got into in Denver. LeBron came into power and he and Larry really would've beefed.
Excuses. Gilbert already showed that using the situations as an excuse, the “coach don’t play rookies” as an excuse isn’t good enough. You train, prepare and whenever your number is called? Deliver. So that coach and/or other coaches see what you’re made of. Darko came into a situation where he wasn’t asked to carry a franchise. He wasn’t asked to produce right away. Unlike other rookies. And he had good veterans to learn from. If anything he should have been amazing when the smoke cleared. Instead he sulked, complained and let his frustrations get the best of him. Mentally weak. And for whatever it’s worth Larry brown has a long list of rookies who got significant minutes under him. Larry Hughes, Tim Thomas and Soeedy Claxton.
Lol I don’t recall them questioning the pick when they knew before the draft he was the pick .. they said more good then bad about darko on draft night lol
6:17 That’s not fair Larry Brown broke Darko. He wasn’t a coach that played rookies. So even if Joe D drafted Mr. Lala his career might’ve turned out differently. No numbers. Slow start. And Tayshaun was already there roaming around the paint.
Guarantee you with the skill set Melo had he would’ve been starting. It’s the same shit that was said about Nick Saban until he started recruiting guys who were bussing people’s asses in practice at a level he hadn’t seen in guys that young
But now Melo would have been raised right in the game with vets like Chauncey, Ben, Rasheed and Rip. The pressure on him would have been way less than what it was in Denver especially the first year.

I hear what you saying. But I disagree on Stanley. When he got to the league his size and strength were not an advantage. Yes he worked on his game but not to the level that he could consistently give 10-12 points a game. And his Defense wasn’t great. Avg def avg off.

If the draft wasn't a thing, the term "Bust" wouldn't even exist. I think about Andrew Wiggins. Compared to all #1 all time, he falls way short. If he was picked 30th, everybody would say he was a steal.
Calling a player a BUST means we as fans and the media got it wrong. The player was just balling, but we (MEDIA) are the ones that put players on pedestals with OUR expectations. When the media calls a player a bust, it really means the sports analysts, ESPN, FOX, and veteran players got the analysis of the BUST wrong. ANALYST and ex-players are wrong the majority of the time, using the BUST term is a scapegoat for us all.
That’s like saying if money didn’t exist nothing would be too expensive. The draft is a representation of how much a team believes ina players potential to impact the game and if they fall short of the potential then they are a bust. Melos career would’ve had a COMPLETELY different trajectory if he was drafted as a piston. Unlike Denver, Detroit was competing at that time. And they were a perfect defensive team that fell apart because they didn’t have a primary 25+ ppg scorer. Also the vets in Detroit could’ve trained melo early to play more defense while teaching him to be a better leader. True story, I stopped playing basketball early in high school because I found another sport to love. When I did play, my coaches hated me joking on them all the time so they used to always give me scrub minutes. Those 2-3 min here and there was my time to shine lol Gil said 5 shots, I definitely was trying to get mine in that little of time. And was playing GP level defense lol
3:50 PFs were stacked in 2000s. I can't think of any other era that had 3 All-time greats at the same position (Duncan, Dirk, KG) each winning a MVP while all are in the Western conference. Ironically you can say Kevin Garnett ran from the grind his last year in Western Conference was 2007 when Dirk won MVP and Duncan won his 4th NBA title.
Rashard's game just wasn't built for what the league was doing at the time. If he'd been born 10-15 years earlier he'd have a completely different career.
Kenyon was no bust he was a really good player an all star call caliber player He had a few serious injuries but he fought through and played well The man average 23.ppg in back to back nba finals and dropped 35 in a finals game He was elite defender and was a fan favorite. Kenyon Martin was at least a 3 time allstar in the east had he stayed there he was never the same after he broke his leg in college. He was a freak athlete with a mean streak and was Shawn Kemp 2.0. Had he not got hurt he probably was a 20 10 player. He's humble and he knows he was blessed to still go number one so by default he gave 120% effort but that's the type of player he was anyway. Look him up in college. He was similar to Zion Williamson and is an example how players can get somewhat forgotten 25 years down the road. Kenyon was an absolute nightmare coming out of college and is one of the what ifs in NBA history. He had a great run regardless but his career was riddled with injuries that started on that lob attempt in Cincinnati.

Crazy Gil didn’t understand Darko mindset but he was saying the same thing when he was talking about his time in Orlando talking about bad coaches. Also he’s a Point so he gets to touch the ball, a center taking 5 shots in 8 minutes ain’t likely.
K Mart was ALWAYS contributing to winning for his teams. He was a defensive specialist and enforcer when those guys were needed in the league. Plus he wasn't an offensive liability.
I have never look at Kenyon Martin as a bust….NEVER those nets and nuggets teams were fun to watch especially those nets teams…. Him and Kidd were magic🎉
DARKO'S disadvantage, which made it impossible for him to have hustled the way Gil did, was that he was really new to the language and the culture as someone NOT from the US. That was the big difference. He really had NO chance.
Gil brought up a point that people leave out when discussing the Pistons in 03. Any pick that went there would have had a hard time. Larry Brown didn't play rookies and he has always been that way. Also, it would have taken a whole lot for Carmelo to win the SF job over Prince. Brown would have valued Tayshaun's defense over Melo's scoring ability. And Brown would've pulled Darko if he tried what Gil did.
People saying Larry ruined Darko & though it’s true, that’s still on Darko. Jermaine O’Neal was on the bench for 4 years in Portland, didn’t play & still became an All-Star w/ Indiana. It’s mentality.
Ruined is such a cop out. So Larry brown should have coddled Darko? Been more sensitive and caring? Airplane spoon fed him minutes as a baby? Was it tough for a rookie to play for Larry brown? Yes. But that’s because you need to prove yourself. And that applies in every job. Gilbert had the right mentality which is why he thrived when given a chance. He was on a bad warriors team where he didn’t see much playing time and had DNP’s. Add to the fact he didn’t go first rd. He could have easily had a Darko mentality. Who knows if Larry Brown tests rookies by not playing them to see how mentally tough they are. See if you do fold, sulk, complain. Which Darko did. He should have prepared and worked twice as harder. That’s on him. He played behind some seasoned vets he could have learned from and developed his game. So by the time he does get significant minutes? He takes the lg by storm.
I forgot that K-Mart was a #1 pick. He was a good, hard-playing, fan-favorite player. I was really sad when he left our hometown team in Jersey! We love you K-Mart! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
I like, you guys discussions. I played High school ball could have played college ball, but avenues took me in another path. Agent Zero is 100% right. You must make the most out of whatever time you have and just stay ready. My son plays middle school basketball now, and he complains about his minutes because he believes he should get more. I tell him to continue working on the things he can control and just stay ready. Don’t be vindictive to your team or other players. Just give effort and make things happen when you get an opportunity. Don’t have a pitty party, force the coaches to give you more time by being ready when your number is called.
I love this discussion and especially on sportsman like conduct or sportsmanship as it pertains to the idea of not running the score up. I totally agree with the guys what is more sportman than to compete to the best of you ability until the end of the game. One of the biggest tenants of sports is the idea of competing. Every player is taught from childhood to compete for everything or until the last whistle but then in am actual competition you want players to stop because they have big lead. If thats truly how people feel how would they feel about instituting mercy rules. The whole idea goes against what you are supposed to do in sports which is compete until the end. Try to be your best amd get the most our of all hardwork and dedication you put in during practice, workouts, training etc. And bring it on game day. I fwel the sameway about players going for individual records why would we ever pull somebody out a game when they are getting the best our of all the effort they have put in practice and its all oozing out in actual game im this potential record breaking achievment and someone says you have enough of a great game lets put somebody else in to finish. The player should have the opportunity to jave their moment just as teams have their collective moments
This was great conversation. K.Martin was always a dog, no one has ever talked about him as a bust, now they do mention that as one of the weakest drafts ever. Great point by him about how leaving the East affected his legacy with missed All Star appearances. I disagree with 03’ Pistons draft conversation, Darko would have been one of one. Because they traded for Rasheed Wallace at the All Star break to fill the PF position. - There’s a chance Bosh’s offensive game could have earned him more minutes as rookie than Darko got and perhaps they don’t see as a big a need to trade for a PF and acquire R.Wallace. If Wade or Melo was drafted both would have competed for Sixth Man of the Year awards as rookies and pushed for a starting role in Year 2. Also pre-R.Wallace trade Melo could have saw heavy minutes in a small ball lineup featuring he, T.Prince, R.Hamilton on the floor at the same time. -RIP was in year 2 as a Piston, Larry Brown would have loved D-Wade because of his defensive effort even as a rookie. D-Wade was a mid-ranger shooter just like RIP but a better slasher to the rim and finished strong around the rim.
If you're a big you're reliant on people to get you the ball in your spots. It's easy for a guard to get up shots in limited minutes, they have the ball in their hands. Nobody was running plays for Darko during garbage time. Delfino and Delk were getting up shots.
He was so important to any team he played on, yet the nets wouldn’t offer him a contract. Makes no sense. Listening to these guys relish in their heyday cracks me up. They caught the biggest fish ever haha
To be fair if you drafted a player first overall and they became Kenyon Martin any franchise and fan base would be disappointed. How do I know because the Nets played the Spurs & Lakers in consecutive finals all 3 teams had Centers/PF drafted first overall Lakers had Shaq, Spurs had Timmy D and the Nets had Kenyon Martin you feel me?
@@sirconvo9725 So if Victor Wembanyama is just a role player that’s fine? If Tim Duncan was a role player or Shaq or Wilt or Anthony Edwards was a role player? When you drafted first overall you gotta become atleast Pau Gasol.
Gil is 100% on both definitions of bust. A player drafted at 1 does not mean he is a generational talent. He is just what the team picking first needs most. Also for sure you have to stay ready so you can earn your minutes. Unless you are a superstar talent in the making from the jump then you have to work your way up. Waiting for the opportunity to start getting ready is setting yourself up to fail.
Kenyon might be the most forgotten #1 pick because he's not embarrassingly bad where people remember him as one of the worst but he's nowhere near the best where people remember him for being elite. He's right in the middle

He was an All Star his contract year in 2004. But he was the best in his draft class and maximized his potential. A very fine player
@@eboooothat’s saying much bc it was one of the weakest drafts. Stromile swift,Darius miles, Marcus fizer, Mike miller, demar Johnson, Chris mihm, Jamal Crawford in that order were the picks after Martin. That being said smack anyone that calls Kenyon Martin a bust

If not mistaken he also got caught up in all the hoopla around that time around superstar HS players (Bron, Telfair, etc). Anyway CHI definitely fucked his mental up, and his potential. Then he has to rebrand his game as a lank, defensive anchor. 😂
Being from Chicago, Chandler and Curry was supposed to be the next Scotty and Mike they let us down. It’s too much pressure. You play for the great Chicago bulls that pressure will do that to anybody!
@@StinkMello12No he wasn't. Snd if he was...it was by people who didn't know ow hoops. Chandler was never supposed to be KG, THAT'S BIG CAP

Kenyon Martin far from a bust i never heard that said ever
For being overall #1 pick.. he even said himself... could be considered a bust
I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone say Martin was a bust

For what we all thought Kenyon was gonna be. He was 70% of what we expected out of Cincy.
He aint a bust making an all star and playing in two finals. But he was a BU

I didn’t know he was number 1 though
But I believe he was all time great I. His prime. Man was big time

I love what Gil said here. You gotta make it happen, you gotta give yourself a chance by staying ready. It's all about earning it.
What do you call an baller whose straight buckets that didn’t ‘earn’ his playing time?
The great ones would stand out eventually. Melo or wade would have become a star regardless, whether it was year 1 or year 3
Gil was spot on. That’s exactly what Cam Thomas does today. He gets in and get his.
But they still won't play him for some reason
@shanescott1124 he the best player on that team too
100% with Gil.
And how do you try to earn more minutes if the coach rarely plays you
You can be 100% with whatever gil named scrubs he had to get passed compared to the Hof caliber players in front of darko and why draft a player first you aren't going to develop correctly sounds idiotic
K-Mart was not a bust at all. He had a role and he played it well. Nobody expected K-Mart to average 20 & 10 year in & year out.

I mean he could’ve averaged that but he was drafted to a roster that ended up being deep as hell. Wasn’t necessary for him to hit those numbers

Larry Hughes, Tim Thomas and Soeedy Claxton.

stanley johnson's coaches never utilized him properly either. he was a center in high school that took it upon himself to change his game and developed, on his own, a 2-guard/small forward skillset. he has post game and the ability to play out of the post and all coaches ever do in the nba is play him off the ball 23 feet away from the basket. i agree with Gil but at the same time, a coach using players wrongly hurts just as much as not taking your opportunity.
I hear what you saying. But I disagree on Stanley. When he got to the league his size and strength were not an advantage. Yes he worked on his game but not to the level that he could consistently give 10-12 points a game. And his Defense wasn’t great. Avg def avg off.

Stanley was not a Center in HS. He played at Mater Dei in Cali which I'm sure you are aware is a basketball powerhouse. They had plenty of size so didn't need him to play Center. He played the SF and SG positions. Went to many of their games when he was there back in the early 2010s.

Yeah whoever calls Kenyon a bust don't understand basketball .
DARKO'S disadvantage, which made it impossible for him to have hustled the way Gil did, was that he was really new to the language and the culture as someone NOT from the US. That was the big difference. He really had NO chance.
Darko spoke English lol
Gil brought up a point that people leave out when discussing the Pistons in 03. Any pick that went there would have had a hard time. Larry Brown didn't play rookies and he has always been that way. Also, it would have taken a whole lot for Carmelo to win the SF job over Prince. Brown would have valued Tayshaun's defense over Melo's scoring ability. And Brown would've pulled Darko if he tried what Gil did.
Kmart was always respected, crazy he only had 1 all star… but he definitely was spot on to why it was only 1
Gil is 💯 talking about the mentality
Gilberts mindset is next level I liked his take on a player only getting a couple minutes.
K Mart nowhere near a bust. Very solid player
Wait a minute. 2 beers per Gatorade bottle is crazy 😂😂😂

Gil was definitely talking about Kwame Brown
McCants just be lying! 🤣🤣 bro never averaged 15, I think me might’ve got high 14’s but for sure like 10 points for his career
Pistons did play well they was in the Eastern conference in 03. They got the number # 2 pick because they drafted Otis Thrope to the Grizzles in 97

I watched Kenyon when he was with the Nets and he was a beast. He wasn’t a Tim Duncan or Garnet but he was missed when he left
Gil’s first point was spot on as well, statistics don’t always reflect impact 1st round pick or not
If you're a big you're reliant on people to get you the ball in your spots. It's easy for a guard to get up shots in limited minutes, they have the ball in their hands. Nobody was running plays for Darko during garbage time. Delfino and Delk were getting up shots.
Its harder for big men though. Gil being the point and SG had the ball in his hands in those limited minutes.
That’s what I be saying man! You can’t look at analytics and judge a player! You gotta watch em play!!
K-Mart wasn’t a bust at all!! Dude was nice on the Nets & Nuggets in his prime!! Whoever called K-Mart a bust shouldn’t talk basketball at all 😂

I love to hear the player’s perspective on these things as opposed to the network “analysts” that never even shot a damn free throw.

So he was a victim of the environment ; the competition was stacked against him ; a 1st Pick that was best fit as a ROLE PLAYER ....but not a BUST 😂
@@sirconvo9725 so we don’t kill Ben Simmons for being a role player?
Ppl remember his time in Denver fondly thats why. They had a roster with names ppl knew. Marcus Camby, Kenyon Martin, Carmelo, JR Smith, Billups was a great starting lineup. Then they had Ty Lawson coming off the bench at one point. The only reason that squad never made the Finals is cause they were in the West. Otherwise that squad was a great team that didnt make it
