Yoshida is definitely one of my favorite in p5. Not only are his perks very helpful in battle, but his story is really compelling. He screwed up in the past and he’s trying his best to make up for his mistakes after learning how to be better person
Yeah, Yoshida is a great story of just a guy who wants to genuinely change the worst parts of society, but because political bs is... *POLITICAL BS,* they struggle to get any traction, but with your help he is able to get back on his feet and get a following on his own. He's also just a genuinely nice guy. Love him

If we met Yoshida in his younger years, it's possible he would've just been another target to change the heart of, but seeing an adult in Persona 5 make strives to redemption on their own is both a breath of fresh air and incredibly engaging and uplifting.

I think that's mostly a side effect of the English translation, in the original Japanese the context is more like one of understanding that person more, not necessarily that you're having a deeper emotional/personal bond with them

The biggest twist about Akechi being the traitor was that he actually WAS the traitor. I kept waiting for him to be a red herring since it was just so over the top on how suspicious he was, but NOPE. It actually is that blatantly obvious.
I always liked Akechi since he pretty much embodied the perfect version of the anti-hero (like litteraly the opposite of who you are as the MC)
The twist isn’t that Akechi is the traitor. The twist is that the Phantom Thieves knew from the beginning and used it to their advantage.

Another foreshadow of Kasumi's: She can't make a choice to save her life or at least she thinks so, and it fits her reverse faith arcana. She lets YOU pick the glasses for HER dad till you point out she should do that. She goes to Maruki asking for salt in the cafeteria confidant when she is in a CAFETERIA and could grab it herself. She let the clothes shop clerk scam her in the horrible stripers dress till you point it out and she picks something she actually like.
She was so used to have her sister do every choice for her that she think she is usless on her own and its nice to give her a little push and find her footing, and it ends up with her rank 9, where she makes her own dance/gym routine with her own style instead of trying to copy her sister's

When Iwai said something during an interaction, and one of the options was "Pathetic." and in my brain I knew I shouldn't pick it, but my heart REALLY wanted to, and so I did...imagine my ELATION when that turned to be the three-point choice, and Iwai actually took it pretty jovially. I felt so absolutely connected to my man Iwai, like we were on the same wavelength, and it's my favorite confidant interaction in the game.
Iwai always felt like the one confidant where Ren could finally let out some of his frustration and be told "It's cool. I get it."

Something I wanna say about the vanilla Aketchi link; I think it’s subtly intended that the link is from Aketchi’s perspective rather than Joker’s. Since Aketchi also has the wild card, it makes sense that he could also have a confidant. Aketchi is also the one that seeks you out, and from his distorted mind feels in his mind he is becoming closer to you even though it is such a one sided relationship. I think it’s interesting how it demonstrates his complete lack of understanding of connections and bonds that explains why the link feels so strange. I think overall it could have been executed better, but it’s still an interesting concept

Thank you so much for doing justice to Akechi in this ranking, giving both of his links very fair ratings and expressing just how compelling he is in Royal. As someone who only recently got into the Persona 5 fandom through Royal and grew extremely attached to Akechi, seeing all the vitriol in the fandom aimed at the character and his fans can be really disheartening (I'm talking toxic QRTs of art and Akechi positivity and shit- though I always block that stuff on sight, tbh). I think it's totally understandable why he wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but sometimes it feels like people can't look past their first impressions from vanilla and give his reworking in Royal a fair shake. I think another thing people don't quite grasp with Akechi is what a distinctly Japanese character he is.
You mentioned LadyVirgilia's vanilla Rank 8 video, but I also highly recommend her cultural analysis of Akechi because many aspects informing his struggles are dependent on the way Japan views illegitimate children (HEAVY social discrimination) and the abuse within the foster system. Another really interesting nugget of Akechi characterization comes in ENTIRELY MISSABLE text messages that you will only see if you don't infiltrate Sae's Palace until 11/12, where Akechi basically keeps hammering in how unhappy he is with his situation committing mental shutdowns and how little control he has.
That's not really related to the confidant, but these texts really enhance it and really make it clear why he has such a fraught, complex relationship with Joker. And the way that culminates in his 2/2 scene and the fact that maximizing his bond leads to him appearing in the postcredits is just so poignant, especially with the devs' intentions of it being the bond with Joker that allows him to endure the fatal wound in the engine room and live another day.

MAJOR ROYAL SPOILERS LOOK AWAY
Also if you don’t have max rank with akechi then he doesn’t actually show up on 2/2, Maruki tells Joker and Morgana alone. You can take this a lot of ways, but to me it really does just seem like he wanted to be with the only sort of friend he has on his last night alive. If he was going just because of Maruki possibly showing up, then he would be there regardless. And I personally found that fascinating! After all of this, he truly did want a connection, even knowing that the closer he was to Joker, the more likely it is that Joker would hesitate to reset the reality. Which just adds to the complexity to him and ugh.
I also got into P5 just last year, so the amount of confusion I experienced on how different people saw this character was immense. It actually took me a bit to realize he had two entirely different social links between the games and that only Royal had the 3rd semester, once I figured that out it made more sense but still.
@@DoKuShOsTaR Tbh, that's why I think him showing up alive at the end of the Royal postcredits is so impactful if you maxed his confidant. It's very much like a few other characters whose fates you can change by putting more effort into bonding with them, and I think it's nice that the devs left his survival as a possibility, as I think Akechi having to live and keep moving forward in spite of his crimes is impactful too.
And the fact that he's the most marginalized of the thieves and it directly led to his involvement in crime, just like troubled teens in the real world. Theres deliberate socioeconomic and cultural commentary there but people miss it so easily. He's a deeply interesting character if you take the time to understand what he represents (thematically and in terms of the real world) instead of boiling him down to just being "evil", which is a position neither the writers nor the characters in the game take.
I’ve always loved Akechi and I’m really glad that Royal fixed his Confidant. It’s nice that he doesn’t do the “redemption via death” thing anymore in Royal and actually puts himself to work in the final palace. And while I don’t see Akechi and Joker having anything romantic between them, (personally I want to beat the ship to death with a hammer but that’s besides the point) I do see how the relationship impacts each other, especially Akechi. Bro hates Joker but still wants to be friends with him in some way.
3:50 I could be wrong, but I think the reason Sae, Joker, and I guess the game itself go to such lengths to not directly name Akechi as the traitor here is not because they're trying to keep it secret, but instead because Joker/Ren is being officially interrogated in a police station by a major prosecutor (and is also most likely being recorded). So if he directly names Akechi as the tratior/criminal, he would be officially accusing him of murder and/or other crimes and potentially be doing so without solid proof and Akechi or Shido could use that against Sae, Joker and the Phantom Thieves and destroy their credibility and/or frame them for the crimes instead.
Again, I could be wrong and there's probably a much better way of explaining/phrasing what I just said, but hopefully you get the idea since I'm pretty sure it's not because they're trying to keep Akechi being the traitor a secret at this point.
Yeah that makes sense for the conversation with Sae but the way they dance around mentioning him in the memory segments is still very funny
by naming akechi as the traitor, joker risks making sae thinks of akechi differently, thus making her cognitive akechi not as easily detainable by the gang

Dang, who knew that a gag you wouldn’t think much of is actually really dark. It also does somewhat support my headcanon that Cendrillion is Kasumi’s Persona while Vanadis is Sumire’s, being that it acting up is how she ended up in Maruki’s palace to begin with.

I used to be the biggest Akechi hater but when Royal came out I am just so happy they gave Akechi an incredible confidant, it made me love his character so much man, the bond with Joker and Akechi is so interesting you honestly get that enemies to lovers vibe they are just teenagers being actual friends who share such an unfortunate fate.

yusuke is literally THE fictional character ive most been able to relate and emotionally connect to across anything ive ever seen and i barely see him taken seriously by the fandom, so im very happy to see his confidant given the respect i think it deserves here ... now somebody listen to me explain in vivid detail how compelling and powerful the way he subconsciously follows in his mothers footsteps *all because of a painting of her cradling him as an infant* and then proceeds to break the same cycle of creative theft and suppression that she and so many others were killed by is...

Yusuke and Futaba are two of the best autism-coded characters I’ve ever seen. They’re that perfect level of eccentric but earnest.
As a person with Autism, there's something about Yusuke I find inspiring.
Man, they did Makoto dirty with her social link being focused on her uninteresting friend rather than herself, how she feels about her relationship with her sister, and how her parents absence has affected both sisters.
That to me is what holds back a bunch of the playable character social links. They save the meat of their stories for the main one
I personally love how in ann’s social link, during the gym rank, ryuji doesn’t even HESITATE saying no to Ann. He’s a big fan of girls, but when Ann legit offers him a date he doesn’t even say no, he legit says “Yeah fuck that” and moves on. This is exactly the type of conversation me and my friends would have in that exact situation, and shows how even ryuji has some form of standards.
Pretty much, I have myself gone through the similar situations where some friends have either confessed, or teasingly offered me a date and it's that reaction, you can love someone, be deeply involved in their life and have a deep bond with them, without wanting to date them, and I loved the game for including that.

Some ppl in the p5 fandom ship Ryuji and Ann. But to me, I simply can’t see it because their dynamic is very sibling coded (to me). I honestly feel the same way about Yosuke and Chie from p4 (if you put aside Yosuke’s general horniness ofc)

What I like about Persona 5's social link cast (for the most part) is that all of them on the surface have unpleasant qualities and your character in-universe is taking a chance on them for their skills or resources. A lot of the best moments of each social link is these characters proving they do have admirable qualities or having to reconcile with their behavior. And for the most part, you do really change their lives as opposed to feeling more like a passive observer or advice dispenser like with a lot of them in P3 and P4.
I think what makes completing confidants so satisfying in this game in particular is the ending, where every one you’ve been able to max out is able to pull through every resources they each have available under their belt in order to bail Joker out of his sentence after everything he’s done for them. It’s genuinely one of the most cathartic and satisfying scenes I think the entire Persona series has done. Also I’m really glad I’m not the only one who thinks Mishima’s is one of the most slept on in the game
I was hoping he'd bring those up too! Mishima's was always my favorite since he's so desperately trying to get people to sign his petition, despite everybody just walking past him. It's his genuine pleas to complete strangers in order to help his friend that make the scene for me, as cliche as it may be.

I loved Sojiro's social link because he reminds me of my own dad. I'm not adopted, but my mother did die when I was a kid and he had to raise me by himself for basically half of my life. I love him so much, and want to pay him back some day. He may not think he's a great father, but I know he is.

Best Confidant has always been Kawakami. For… practical reasons. She lets you go out at night. That’s the only reason.

I'm glad you appreciate Akechi's social link so much, it was one of my favorites. As someone who only ever played Royal and didn't know he would betray you, I always thought something was off about Akechi, like something about the way he talked and sounded just set off some red flags in me that made me think he was lying and not showing his true self, like everything about him was artificial. Props to the voice actor too. Like as someone who's been abused it really sounded a lot like someone who just wanted to be on you good side and wanted to kind of curate how you think about them. Then when he hits you with the "I hate you" line, I felt like it was the first time he was actually being genuine and showing his true self.
I remember thinking "This is the actually Akechi, and everything else is just the person he maybe wanted to be but couldn't and was just lying to himself up to this point." It was kind of confusing to me as someone who had played P3 and P4 as I thought if he was ignoring and suppressing his true self, then how could he have a Persona? Then when it's revealed it's all a ruse and that he has accepted his self and that he's lying to you to betray you, it all suddenly really clicked. Like I never trusted him but having that artificial personality confused me until I realized it was intentional. Phenomenal social link and voice work, and you did a great job discussing it.

Akechi being one of the worst social links in vanilla and one of the best links in Royal is so iconic. I could gush about his Royal confidant for hours. Rank 2 where Joker sees through his act. Rank 3 and 4 where he takes Joker to places he finds comfort in. No More What Ifs. The foreshadowing in rank 5. Him telling Joker about his past in rank 6. Akechi holding back/using a handicap in his rank 7 match being a mirror to him holding back in his rank 8 confidant by only using the power of Robin Hood and that ultimately coming to a head in ranks 9 and 10. Akechi trying to claim he hates Joker during his rank 8 but Maruki debunking that. The game itself updating Akechi's profile updating after the beginning of the 3rd semester and asking when Joker and Akechi's other promise to duel again at full power will be fulfilled. It's just so good.

There's something to unpack RE Joker in vanilla P5 considering Goro's murderous actions to be a bonding moment. Goro is twisted, but does the protagonist... like this? Is this yet another link in a chain to lash them together? Does the protagonist wanna push him around? Wanna drag him down?
The biggest tragedy of people who see Joker purley as a self insert is that they overlook how he quietly matches Akechi's freak completely
I remember Sojiro’s Rank 10 changes depending on the point in the story. Before him finding Futaba’s calling card in her room, the Rank 10 have him just brush off the idea that the Phantom Thieves changed the uncle’s heart. After that point, Rank 10 will have Sojiro acknowledge that he knows what Joker did.

The single and only reason I personally remember and connect with Chihiya is because its super relatable to anyone who has gotten swept up in a scam ring, MLM, cult, or religion that was straight up abusive. They tear you away from your self worth so they can tell you they have the path to become the person t̶h̶e̶y̶ you always wanted to be. And it's scarily realistic to how it works too. You could easily make Chihiya a Jehovah's Witness or Mormon missionary (making her superior actually her overly zealous mission companion) and it would literally be the same social link storywise.
That being said unless you've experienced it yourself yeah it would be a forgetful story
Separate thought on a different character but I hate the culmination of Ann's story arc isn't found in her confident but you see throughout the main story as she openly defends herself more from creepy behavior before finally in Shido's palace she puts her foot down and straight up publicly outs a rich pervert. It's the sole reason I don't fault all the Ann oogling that happens between palaces2-4 because you do see her stand up for herself more. And by the beach episode she's making fun of Ryuji and Morgana for their inappropriate behavior. Which results in at least Ryuji's sexism taking a nosedive. Team Ann x Shiho all the way!
PS: It's really fascinating to look at Ann's personality and realize how scarily similar she can act to Akechi. Most of the theives wouldn't kill anyone. Ann literally says she only wants to keep Kamoshida alive so he can't escape the consequences of his crimes. Imagine what would've happened if Shiho died from that fall.
One of the wildest parts of her confidant too is that it's somehow not the *worst* persona social link involving the main character of the link scamming people for a cult either
Idk if Makoto being low on this list is a hot take but tbh I’d have her even lower. Maybe at the bottom, since it’s the only confidant that actively regresses the development of an existing character. The fact that the setup for confidant is that she wants to learn to relate to the rest of the student body is so promising, since a major part of her character in the Kaneshiro arc is that she’s been manipulated by the people around her to think that’s she’s better than everyone else. But then they go and make her be blindly suspicious of her new friend’s boyfriend (a concern that she openly states is baseless), only for that baseless accusations to be completely validated. It goes against the initial premise so hard, and it essentially reinforces the idea that Makoto is an infallible beacon of reason, when it would’ve been the perfect opportunity to explore how she’s been conditioned subconsciously to look down on the capabilities of those who can’t match her book smarts. It would’ve been ten times better if her accusation was wrong and she had to apologize and really level with Eiko, but instead she’s the perfect genius and ig she gets to slap her friend or whatever. I really do love Makoto so it sucks they dropped the ball this hard.

They should have either wrote it so Makoto was wrong with her accusations and assumptions about Eiko’s bf (which I honestly thought where the confidant was going in my first playthrough since there was no real hint to Makoto being right) or have Makoto act unintentionally condescending towards Eiko for her decisions to not go to college and for not being academically gifted. Eiko could’ve called her out for this, which could’ve encouraged Makoto to unlearn her conditioned behaviour to look down upon those less academically gifted than her.
I’ve seen some people say that what Makoto’s confidant story was trying to do was demonstrate how Makoto’s desire to help out those in need stems from her admiration and grief for her father. I’m sorry but if that’s what they were going for, they dropped the ball because I did not get that impression at all. I really really wished the confidant instead focused on her feelings towards her father (and maybe Sae too to make up for her not having a real confidant) so her 3rd semester wish would be more impactful. Imagine her confidant story being about her learning more about herself outside of being a student and applying that knowledge to being a better student council president who wasn’t just “on the teachers side” but actually meaningfully helps various students. And the final few rank scenes could be about her opening up about her father and about how what drives her to help others is because it’s what her father did and she wants to make him proud. That would have been 1000x better. Makoto sooooo deserved a rewrite of her confidant in royal. And I’m saying this as someone who isn’t a big fan of Makoto lmao

Came here to see where Akechi would rank, and I am pleased that even though you consider him no 2 objectively he’s no 1 in your heart. Fantastic character and imo the best social link in the series with his royal version. I love how they just hang out and Joker reciprocated back instead of being the therapist. Also I’m glad you pointed out the romantic subtext because its thick. If Akechi was female the entire fanbase would near unanimously consider them the most canon couple lol.

P5 is the same dungeon every time and they're usually designed in a way that drags, not helped by the fact that playing them optimally means doing the whole thing at once.

I understand the Morgana hate (because I share it due to Ryuji's treatment) and it is well deserved, but believe it or not, he kind of redeemed himself a little in Strikers and specially in Tactica. He starts actually acting as the "second in command", properly supporting the team and teaching Erina how the Phantom Thieves operate, and of course, he leaves the SIMPing a lot in Tactica which is greatly appreciated. Surprising how it took him 2 entire games to become a decent character... But oh well, better late than never I suppose!
It's sad that it's too late for most and he even sided with Ryuji when he cussed cussed out that computer
Even as a Morgana fan, I agree very much that he really comes into his own in Strikers. In order to give him more insecurity in the original game, they had to make him seem somewhat useless narratively in the middle part of the game. In Strikers, they let him be a lot sharper and gave him a better role on the team. Instead of Makoto figuring out and planning everything because "she's the smart one," they let him be the "street smart" one, and I think it works well. I also think he benefits a lot from Royal extending the storyline. He comes off as kinder/more wholesome to me after his main character arc, but you don't get that much time to see it in the original game because of how late it resolves. I think people kinda miss the point with Morgana. He's supposed to be a dynamic character. It's not unintentional that he's more likable in later games - that's the whole point. He made a change and became better.

About the romantic relationship: I always try to the nerdy thing of self inserting myself in the character shoes, or just role-playing as a character, and I usually go after whatever character I feel has the biggest chemistry with the main character and that I personally think would look cute together with the protagonist. So I usually go after the character around the same age as the protagonist because of those reasons.
But for the adult ones, sometimes I just look at Tae Takemi and my brains bananas for the hot goth medic and throw all the role-playing thing out of the window.

I agree for the Kasumi portion, Coach Hiraguchi should’ve made an earlier appearance in the first half of her social link to further that foreshadowing of the Sumire twist by her coach showing her hidden disapproval that “Kasumi” isn’t taking her advice seriously and when the twist happens, shows Hiraguchi be surprised that Sumire finally snapped out of her “Kasumi” mindset and is proud that she’s finally taking her advice seriously. Plus having more screen time for Sumire specifically would’ve helped make us, the player see how SUMIRE is as a person more compared to Kasumi. We could’ve seen her act more like herself like reflecting on how she used to be scared of fish at the aquarium when she was younger and Kasumi wasn’t, or how she would’ve asked Joker to go to destinyland to enjoy the roller coasters since she enjoys those and Kasumi isn’t a fan of those or even Sumire inviting Joker to come to the Sky Tower since Sumire doesn’t mind heights as much as Kasumi did. We could’ve also seen her more shy and inclusive personality kick in more to further her separation from Kasumi personality wise and more. Overall, I like Sumire as a character before AND after her twist, I just wish the 2nd half could’ve been explored more rather than having only a month to spend with SUMIRE Yoshizawa.
Yusuke is by far my favorite character in the Persona series. He’s both interesting and funny as shit.

Side note for Sae’s social link, since you start ranking her up in the present (that you aren’t yet playing in), you gain no exp bonuses from fusion until rank 10. So her social link is pretty much pointless up until the end.

While I do agree that the focus on Eiko does hold back Makoto's social link a lot, the real point of Eiko is about Makoto trying to connect with someone her age after having no other friends outside of the Phantom Thieves, both to develop a friendship and to prove to herself she isn't too out of touch with her cohorts.
I am so glad there's someone out there appreciates Yoshida as a social link it's def my favorite and I barely hear it talked about.
I wasn’t sure at first with some of the middle section rankings, but the more I thought about it I really do agree with your rankings. I especially agree with the Top 3, Akechi and Sojiro were always my priorities along with Sumire and Maruki. And I really resonate with Yusuke’s story as an artist myself.
I will say two things though. I definitely side with you about how the game seems to endlessly have it out for Ryuji for no reason. However, I can’t seem to see why people hate Morgana so much. I like he and Ryuji’s constant bickering. And even his Okumura ark, I could see that at the time Morgana was simply still frustrated with his situation and was lashing out due to that. It makes it even better when he truly begins to accept and even cherish his situation as the plot progresses.

As much as I love Makoto and her character, her confidant sucks! It started with a decent story idea with getting her out of her comfort zone to experience stuff like the arcade. What a shame, but at least despite what some may think, her narrative story presence makes up for the weak confidant to me at least

Imagine a world where sae hears your stories of going around town and helping people and thats how her social link advances, like she hears you talk about how you helped yoshida and shes like "huh, youre not so bad after all, ive heard him start rising again and i guess its thanks to you". I get that social links shouldnt be required for the basic ending, but it could be a way of forcing people to interact with them and serve as progression for her character
Bro I love Mishima so much, he’s one my favorite character and his social link is my favorite next to Ryuji, I think he’s overhated imo, I never found him annoying personally. Also Yoshida is very underrated and he needs more love.
