Seriously, I have owned and shot Sony since it’s early days, after leaving the lab and my Pentax 67 behind. Why spend $4000 when you can get virtually identical or better images and video from the Sony A7IV at a cost of $2,500. Yes, it a 33MP, so what? And you get the smaller body Becka is talking about. Explain the misguided passion.
You Sony guys are very biased when it comes to other brands. Not everbody is happy with a Sony and the specs and ergonomics of this Nikon Z8 are very different compared to a Sony A7IV.
Another user of both - and agree with Chris David - overall way better on Z9. The D850 excels in switch to small subjects between branches, but that's where its advantage ends. The Z9's subject detection is hugely advantageous (I shoot mostly wildlife).

Hi Becca. I personally very much prefer this design of LCD. I always just want to flip the screen up when shooting in lower angles. I hate the flip out screen on my R5. It hits the USB port when I shoot tethered (95% of the time). I think the Panasonic design is the best of both worlds.
Same, flippy screens are for blogging not for pro level cameras.. Just because Sony and Canon do it, doesn't mean everyone has to do it, Nikon will probably add it to the next one after this.
Different strokes for different folks. The more common tilt-flip is nice though for keeping the screen protected during transport/storage, and I find the minor inconvenience for tethering/L-brackets negligible compared to removing an entire use case for the camera.
@@felm.974 this is such an opinionated comment, there are plenty of professionals who prefer the flip screen. im a wedding photographer/filmmaker and i much prefer the flip screen. its preference, not who's a "blogger" lol
Nikon doesn't have a decent spec MILC FF with flippy screen. That is a downside. might not be an issue for you but to others. Sony was late to offer flippy screen for their MILC FF but they did it because of the huge list of cons by reviwers. Nikon should've learnt from this.
Becca, I love you but dumbing down the technicalities in order to "attract novice shooters" to a $4K+ (body only) system does not make any sense other than coddling lazy rich kids. If it's technical it's because it's meant for professionals, not deep pocketed amateurs.
I thought I'd want to sell my Z9 for this, and although the Z8 looks great, I'm so used to the Z9's vertical grip, and insane battery life, I'm happy to stay Z9 for now. I am 6'6 though, so the size is less of an issue for me I guess. That along with the fact I can shoot full speed to 2 CFexpess slots, i'm much happier to have a Raw backup, rather than a Raw + jpg solution. I can't see the SD cards getting up to 2 gig + a second like the CF Express cards can, not that it will bother most people though. Happy Nikon is adding more to their Lineup.
Hi, can I ask you a genuine question? Have you ever had a CFexpress card fail? I only use one card when I shoot, never had a problem with it so far... but just wondering if you ever had an issue with it or if you know someone who has? These cards seem very trustworthy, but I'd like to hear other people's opinions on this, especially if you also work professionally.
@@HaggenKennedy Hi Kennedy, No I've not had a single issue with CFExpress yet, used slower ones on my D850 for 6 ish years, Professionally, and these new super fast (almost 2 gig a second) CF cards for my Z9 have been amazing, if you want to do 8K 60 raw, or 4K 120 raw, you need the super fast cards. I generally use Sandisk, but had to go for Delkin Black for the faster card. 'Delkin BLACK 150GB (1725MB/s) Cfexpress Type B Memory Card' Sandisk may have a faster card now also.
Whenever BEcca reviews a camera you know it’s going to be well worth watching. Although I do disagree about the rear display. I love that Nikon hasn’t fallen to the hype and made a flip out display that can’t be tilted without sticking out to the side. Yay Nikon!
Not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere, but is the verge moving away from doing video reviews on a regular basis? I am noticing more podcasts/little news blurbs and less high quality reviews. I know Deiter (may have misspelled his name there) left to work for Google, but even the reviewers that filled his place are seldom seen.
Just bought the z 6ii and two S lenses a week ago when they did that amazing sale with 24 month 0% financing. What excites me about this new release is that just like you said, Nikon fans can take a deep breath and relax because Nikon BROUGHT IT on this camera. The z 6ii is fine for my applications but I plan to grow into a z 8 sometime in the future so excited to see what my future holds!
I've already sent my pre-order. All the bits I wanted improved in my z7ii and no bloody battery bulge. If I need more battery, hooking up to a usb-c powerbank seems an obvious choice.
As a Z9 owner (for over a year), the Z8 IS more of what I wanted, upgrading from my D810. However, I DON'T regret getting the Z9 first/at all. The Z9 checks alot of boxes for me, even some I didn't know I needed or cared about until using it full-time. The ONLY area I felt an "issue" was for my UW work...outfitting my Z9 for an UW rig would be incredibly bulky & insanely priced (& you don't want to cheap out on a housing). So in that sense, I always wanted a smaller body camera to match the Z9 capabilities: enter Z8. I'll be adding the Z8 to my gear, as my main back-up & UW camera. The smaller size also means it will become my primary hiking/backpacking camera too. I see the Z8 as a perfect companion to my Z9.
Some thoughts in response: * Many photographers prefer the tilting screen instead of the articulating screen. Both have their benefits, so saying one is unequivocally better is a mistake. It does seem that less expensive cameras are used in ways that benefit from the flip-out while the more expensive cameras do well with tilting. Spending $5-6k for the Z8 and lens just to do talking-head recording is a waste of money. The Z50II and Z5II should probably get flip-out screens. If a Z8 is used in a way where the flip-out would be useful, an external monitor or wireless connection to a phone or tablet would serve the purpose. * Nikon's AF modes may seem oddly named for someone whose job involves using many different systems. The person buying a Z8 is going to use it extensively, and learning what the modes mean is part of the process of learning a new system. For those already in the Nikon space, these are generally familiar. And while eye-AF is all the rage, deciding my focus point is one of the three things I actually think about when I'm about to press the shutter. I think RUclips photography influencers overstate the extent of how 'far behind' Nikon is, because they're explicitly looking for things which separate cameras. If two people run a 800m race, and the first finishes 1m behind the first, everyone in the stands sees it as a very close race. The photo-finish image, though, suggests a huge win. The perspective of both is relevant, but the commentator should emphasize how close it was rather than how the image at the tape looks. * Red sued Nikon over NRaw. Adobe probably was waiting to see the outcome of the case to proceed with implementing it. Similarly, Nikon was probably waiting for the outcome to launch the Z8. The case was dismissed on April 27, two weeks ago. * For the "We just don't know" questions: battery life, heat during long video recording, dual CFexpress card slots, Ethernet port: * * If battery life is a concern, the Z9, USB power, or the vertical grip with hot-swappable batteries are the solutions. The Z8+grip is bigger than the Z9, so that's a consideration. * * If long video recording is intended, the Z9 is the answer. If the recordings will generate revenue, the extra cost is justified. If the recordings will not generate revenue, get a Panasonic GH5/GH6 and record forever. * * Nikon users know the answer to the dual CFexpress vs CFexpress/SD card options, it's been in the D4/D5/D6 vs D8*0 question for the past decade. Without an unequivocal reason to pick one over the other, having the same cards in the Z9 and different cards in the Z8 is an excellent decision by Nikon. If D800/D810 users had strongly complained, the D850 would have been produced with dual XQD card slots. When it was released, I some people asked why it still had an SD card. Again, the YT people. Actual photographers using the camera went with it. * * If the Ethernet port is a significant need, the Z9 is there. If it is an occasional need, a USB-C to Ethernet dongle is available. * The Z8 is still quite large. The "small size" will be better satisfied with a Z6III. [Sadly, I think the Z8 has ended the Z7 line.] * The f/1.8 S lenses seem to satisfy many photographers who want a smaller size. The f/1.2 lenses are massive, I agree. Nikon may outsource the f/1.4 lenses to Tamron and Sigma, at least for the next few years. Those may hit the sweet spot for some. * The "frustrated Z9 users" question comes down to, "Are you upset that Nikon didn't cripple the Z8 ENOUGH?" For the person who spent over $10k for a Z9 and lenses, they hopefully got $1500 in benefit over the past year. Many may still chose the Z9 over the Z8 because of exactly the "We just don't know", plus one more. If a person will generally want a vertical grip, the Z9 is significantly smaller than the Z8+grip. And then the price difference is only $1100. If and when I decide I need something better than the Z7II, I'm likely in this last group, with the Z9 winning over the Z8+grip. After going with the Nikon 'tier-2' option for years, making me the exact intended audience for the Z8...
@Unconventional Reasoning well, is it necessary to have 8k video or 8k TV? We may not think we need it, but in the future, I am sure the standard will be higher than 45 mp. Remember Bill Gates once said that you will never need more than 640kb for your computer?
I own a Z9 and a Z7ii. It’s not the Z9 I am considering selling. It’s the Z7ii. I use that camera for travel, street, and landscape. The Z8 only weighs 4 more ounces and gives me a camera with vastly superior video capabilities. The Z9 battery life and dual CF card slots make it a lock for sports, wildlife, and events. The Z8 easily supplants the Z7ii.
Wait, Nikon rolls out multiple firmware updates to continue to improve their product after release?? This must be the most confusing thing ever to Sony.
@@DeanAllman One thing that made Apple iPhone become popular and took over Nokia/Blackberry is because of the software updates. I am glad Nikon figured this out.
I bought my Z9 knowing it was simply a stop-gap until Nikon made something like the Z8. That the Z8 IS a Z9 is just icing on the cake for me. I'm not quite ready for the depreciation hit I'm about to incur selling off the Z9 though =(
The Z9 isn't a stopgap. It's the best that they reduced the manufacturing costs and size on to sell to less hardcore audience. The z9 has better battery life, a metal construction instead of polymer, larger buffer due to dual XQD cards.
@@sahilmeena8018 it was a stopgap for ME until something more reasonably sized came out. Also the buffers are identical if not shooting in backup mode.
I just bought a Sony A9 for a pretty low price and it has a stacked Sensor ...but it's much older than these newer cameras... actually going to use it for the first time today 😊
Can't wait to add some low resolution Z9 and Z8 and M11 cams to my kit. I have a D850. I've seen hi-res, but digital is a good decade or more away from it. Truth is, I don't like the smell of the lab.
Hi Becca, thanks for the review and opinions. You asked a bunch of questions including the battery life! You had the camera could test it and let us know! That’s how a review works. Answering as many important questions as you can in a short time for people who don’t have it, but interested to find out.
Considering how much better the Autofocus of the Z5 got after the 1.40 firmware update, I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually drop a similar update for the Z8 and Z9 down the line.
@@TheBhezardeye focus has been sticky since the Z9 came out.. it’s significantly better then the z5.. but the z5 did massively improve.. so did the og z6.. it can pick out the eye from much distance then before.. but the Z9/z8 system is significantly better.
Her review of the Z9 was stellar, but this one is really bad. She contradicts herself and says things that don't make sense. Who in their right mind would need a selfie screen in such a rugged camera? The photos she shares are great, though, but this review was the worst I've ever seen from her. She loses a bit of credibility with this one. Why not spend a few weeks with the camera before providing genuine feedback? It's even silly to create a feedback video after playing for a few hours. How can one give any meaningful advice this way? Fortunately this video doesn't have many views (good for her).
I didn’t really get point about dumbing down a £4000 camera. This isn’t an entry level camera surely anyone that shells out for this camera would watch a few RUclips setup videos?
Autofocus is one area Nikon keeps trailing Sony & Canon. But I guess you can't have everything given the lower price tag vs the competition. Loved your review Becca. :)
Idk, trailing is a strong word, some reviewers say the Nikon is actually better in some instance and others not. It doesn’t seem to be that big a difference like it was in the past. I tried the Z9 and it sure is better than my Sony FX3, which I already think is great.

Z9/Z8 AF is as good as the best that Canon and Sony offer. I’ve used all the top cameras for the top brands and you’re splitting hairs when it comes to autofocus.
Do i want to be shooting on the same camera than novice shooters there are others camera for that... i dont understand why everyone is picking on the batt when in reality what is the situation of the r5? a7r5 or a1 for that matter all these cameras are being used by pros with external batt the z8 has clearly been thought that way as well! Finally yes the af is not as good as the the a1 or e1 but how is the internal raw recording doing on those cameras? if not as good the new af on the z8 is pretty close to the a1 and very far from the z7 ii issues that existed. i would rather trade in the af for better codecs....
I love nikon cameras. I bought full frame d3 a old camera. I love the camera. I think nikkor lenses are great lenses. I think everything I read about this camera is one of the best cameras ever . I love how heavy the d3 is. I love the d3
Love the new Z8 but Nikon needs to still improve the autofocus and get some smaller and lighter lenses. I mean, look at the 70-200 2.8 - considerably heavier and longer than Sony GM II or Canon. But, kudos to Nikon on their pricing ($4k for a stacked sensor 20 fps raw vs Sony A1 at $6500 for 20 fps uncompressed raw) and their firmware updates.
You are only pointing to one case. There are many Nikon lenses that are smaller and lighter than Sony/Canon lenses. Nikon's AF on the Z9 and Z8 should be on par with either Sony or Canon cameras. Most youtuber who complains about the AF are Sony fan boys. Nikon Z8 pretty much beat Sony A1 in every possible way and at only 60% of the price. It is literally the best price for a high megapixel stacked sensor camera.
So we got a choice of Z9 with or without grip, and if you shoot landscapes and no action your still stuck with the Z7II (not a bad thing.) Everyone thinks this is going to sell really well, and yet no one I know wants to buy one and is staying with their Z7II or Z6II or moving to Sony, Canon or Panasonic. $5500, $4000 or $2600 all for the same image quality. That's quite the spread. The $2600 for that level of IQ in the Z7II is impressive though, and great value for money. The Z8 sure makes the Z7II look good if you don't need the speed.
Will Z8 while out Z9? Dont know. The Z9 has 2 elements that I like very much: 1) the big form factor to me means it is also more impact resistance. I've dropped my Z6II twice and it had to go to the bin, I've dropped a D850 10 times still working fine. The other, perhaps more relevant, issue is the sensor curtain. The Z9 has that beautiful curtain that rolls down to protect the sensor when you remove the lens. I live in a very hot desert climate; which means changing lenses once will already result in dust spots on the images. With the Z9 that is a lot less. Couldnt see if the Z8 has that same curtain or not. Apart from that: I belief Nikoin has positioned this Z8 spot on, both spec-wise and price-wise.
Stop wondering there little Becca...A lot of us knew it was coming and I don't think it mattered. I have several Z9's and Z7II's and just ordered a couple Z8's. I love them all. They are fantastic cameras...but I have been working with Nikons for at least 50 plus years. I really have not had any problems with the auto fucus at all. It seems to work very well for me every time I pick one of them up. I really hope you like the Z8 and use it to give it a chance. Thanks for sharing...

They are the best on nikon lineup but not the best, specially autofocus, reason why I’m still staying with my Z7ii, until they get their autofocus system fixed.
The people who have been using it are stressing it as much as possible for their reviews. Once it gets used by regular photographers, this is less likely. If someone gets a Z8 and has regular overheating issues, I will easily tell them, "You should have gotten a Z9."
Battery will be of course worst than superior Z9 ...depending how much worst , and if you will have to buy a new grip to use the superior battery of the Z9 ...maybe the difference in price will be less . And of course HEAT....Jared Polin just review z8 and came with the problem of heat. And thats for me is a big faiulure of small bodies.
@@Emulives I rarely do burst photos. With the Z7 and Z7II, the idea of overheating has never crossed my mind. The Z8 use a little more power, but it also has more metal as a heat sink than the Z7II, so I expect it will be completely fine at the fastest stills frame rates.

Still think I would go with the z9, but used. Primarily for the better battery life, unibody form factor, and matching card options. I miss having a chunky camera and it would pair well with my Fujifilm. I had a D850, d500, d3X, an D4s before mirrorless so I'm used to Nikon's quirks.

I honestly don't have issues with it on the Z9 now. I shoot models moving in and out of frame, at F1.4, and it nails the eye AF 99% of the time, even through sunglasses, which is nuts.
A lot of people want Nikon to fix an AF system they have never used. People are watching reviews by RUclips photography influencers who have a different use case than typical photographers. First, they are recording themselves in many different situations. Second, they have access to more cameras than most of us. Third, they can switch systems much more cost effectively than most of us. Fourth, they are stressing the cameras in different genres to find 3-5% differences in performance. Most of us will do the photography we want to do and have the camera work for us as we need it.
@@UnconventionalReasoning yeah I’m not sure how bad it is first hand. I do have a Z6. And if the af is anything like that, then I definitely want nothing to do with it lol

The banding is not an issue because the stacked sensor has a much faster readout speed. By the end of the decade, the mechanical shutter will also be gone from your Sony cameras. Meanwhile, removing the mechanical shutter takes away the last critical moving part in the camera. Nikon doesn't have a decent spec MILC FF with flippy screen. That is a downside. might not be an issue for you but to others. Sony was late to offer flippy screen for their MILC FF but they did it because of the huge list of cons by reviwers. Nikon should've learnt from this.
Becca's camera reviews just hits different
Becca, I love you but dumbing down the technicalities in order to "attract novice shooters" to a $4K+ (body only) system does not make any sense other than coddling lazy rich kids. If it's technical it's because it's meant for professionals, not deep pocketed amateurs.
Coddle the rich kids! Then pay me another $4k to teach them how to use their camera!!! 💵💵💵🤣
'Delkin BLACK 150GB (1725MB/s) Cfexpress Type B Memory Card'
Sandisk may have a faster card now also.
Whenever BEcca reviews a camera you know it’s going to be well worth watching. Although I do disagree about the rear display. I love that Nikon hasn’t fallen to the hype and made a flip out display that can’t be tilted without sticking out to the side. Yay Nikon!
I don't think Z8 target audience is for selfie, or someone new to photograph. That is Z30.
Or even the Z50.
Not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere, but is the verge moving away from doing video reviews on a regular basis? I am noticing more podcasts/little news blurbs and less high quality reviews. I know Deiter (may have misspelled his name there) left to work for Google, but even the reviewers that filled his place are seldom seen.
in this ecomony, 4k is not something the VAST VAST majority of ppl are dropping if they're a beginner or novice.
And if they are, they also have the money to pay me to teach them how to use the camera. 💵💵💵
You need to be aware that colour performance in low light on the Z6 II is better than the Z8 and Z9.
@@stuartallenphotos you mean like less noise? I think there are tons of software that can correct that now. So it's a non issue.
I've already sent my pre-order. All the bits I wanted improved in my z7ii and no bloody battery bulge. If I need more battery, hooking up to a usb-c powerbank seems an obvious choice.
Exactly my thoughts
My perfect camera has arrived. Got my order in! The AutoFocus is amazing.
Some thoughts in response:
* Many photographers prefer the tilting screen instead of the articulating screen.
* For the "We just don't know" questions: battery life, heat during long video recording, dual CFexpress card slots, Ethernet port:
* * If battery life is a concern, the Z9, USB power, or the vertical grip with hot-swappable batteries are the solutions.
[Sadly, I think the Z8 has ended the Z7 line.]
* The f/1.8 S lenses seem to satisfy many photographers who want a smaller size.
I wish the review itself was as well thought-out as this comment
I agree with all of your response except for the Z7. I think the Z7 will become the high resolution camera.
@@mlai2546 It is unnecessary, and counterproductive, to have a higher resolution camera than 45mp.
@Unconventional Reasoning well, is it necessary to have 8k video or 8k TV? We may not think we need it, but in the future, I am sure the standard will be higher than 45 mp. Remember Bill Gates once said that you will never need more than 640kb for your computer?
@@mlai2546 It is counterproductive because diffraction reduces image quality, canceling the benefit of the extra megapixels.

The Z9 isn't a stopgap. It's the best that they reduced the manufacturing costs and size on to sell to less hardcore audience. The z9 has better battery life, a metal construction instead of polymer, larger buffer due to dual XQD cards.

It is the new D850. Which I own but this Z8 is that good
and before that the D300, which was a ton of D3 awesomeness in a smaller MUCH less expensive rock-solid body. Just ordered my Z8.

Autofocus is one area Nikon keeps trailing Sony & Canon. But I guess you can't have everything given the lower price tag vs the competition. Loved your review Becca. :)
Nikon Dslrs are known for autofocus n they lagged because canon n sony were developing video cameras fr 2 decades
Idk, trailing is a strong word, some reviewers say the Nikon is actually better in some instance and others not. It doesn’t seem to be that big a difference like it was in the past. I tried the Z9 and it sure is better than my Sony FX3, which I already think is great.

Can anyone recommend me a mirrorless camera for under 1.3k

I love this camera but my wallet says no. >
The Z8 sure makes the Z7II look good if you don't need the speed.
if this had a flip out screen i’d buy it but now have to get the a7rv instead
Great review , the best I have seen on the subject today
The nikon Z8 has a dust curtain, you can see it on Kai W's review
It sounds like you could use a camera strap! haha

The consumer wins when they stay with what you got as long as it fits their needs.
There are already reports of camera getting burning hot. That is because it doesn't have a fan and the body is way smaller.
The people who have been using it are stressing it as much as possible for their reviews. Once it gets used by regular photographers, this is less likely. If someone gets a Z8 and has regular overheating issues, I will easily tell them, "You should have gotten a Z9."
LinksTV got over an hour and 10 minutes of 8k 30 in the sun. Nikon’s spec is 90 minutes.

@@djrease7354 The Z9 has been in use by pros since the beginning of 2022. The lack of the mechanical shutter is fine with those I've talked to. The banding is not an issue because the stacked sensor has a much faster readout speed. By the end of the decade, the mechanical shutter will also be gone from your Sony cameras. Meanwhile, removing the mechanical shutter takes away the last critical moving part in the camera. But sure, it's a glorified smart phone camera, because the only difference between a dedicated camera and a smart phone camera is a mechanical shutter.
@@UnconventionalReasoning You are 100% correct and stacked sensors are becoming more of a reality in newer cameras at lower prices.. Lets see what Sony comes up with in its new release.. I stand corrected!!!
@@djrease7354 I recently heard that the mechanical shutter is the second most expensive component in the camera, after only the sensor. For the pro-level bodies, it is around $500. Removing it helps offset the cost of the stacked sensor.
@@djrease7354 Do you know why mirrorless still has mechanical shutter? And also why you get banding? Maybe you should understand it before making such silly comments 🤭 I suggest you read some books and get yourself educated about sensor readout speed, how mechanical shutter works and what causes banding. Once you understand, you will know why you don't need it for stacked sensors.
