Yea man totally. The fashion aesthetic is now a totally iconic aspect of this sequence. The high/low fives before the scene starts followed by their pose is totally a fun part of the style of 80s action sensibilities. Which was “way cool”.
So, agree! There's also something to be said about rockin' a short, sassy hairdo to accompany the overall look & feel of this action packed sequence! Next to the '90's, the 1980's had THE BEST outfits of any decade! On a side note: I wouldn't mind being married to either of these stunning visions of lovelies, or some women who are just like them. Sure they could definitely wupp my tail in the process, easy, no debate there; but just to know that my woman could handle herself in a fight (unfair or otherwise) would be one less worry or concern for me when I can't be there for her... not that she'd need me to always have her back!
I only accept those for stylised action sequences and even then only when it's done right, not for the sake distracting us from bad choreography. For example, there is this Korean action movie called "Ballerina" and it's fight scenes are so much more dynamic and fun to watch because of the camera movements.

Cynthia Rothrock is a highly trained martial artist. She received most of her high level titles prior to starring in this movie. She is now a Grandmaster. Michelle Yeoh is a trained ballerina, and was attending the Royal Academy of Dance in London, before an injury derailed her professional ballerina career. Yes, though that was common for Hong Kong movies of the time. I think what Loh is referring to is that Cynthia Rothrock was a martial arts champion who became an actress. Michelle Yeoh started as an actress and through the years has been trained. Though at this point their really isn't much difference. She is FULLY trained in Wing Chun Kung Fu now and has had other training martial arts training.
Andrew Thorne One thing I fucking hate about modern fight scenes is zoomed in, rapid cut, shakey cam filming. I don't know if it was Batman Begins that started it but it was the first time I noticed it.

Given what passes for award-worthy movies lately, that might be considered a step _back,_ mind you. Not going all rose-tinted-glasses "all old movies were better" bullshit, but this particular movie is better than most anything I've watched in the last two or three years.
Can anyone else not stop watching 2:18 over and over? If I remember correctly, Michelle Yeoh isn't a fully trained, professional stuntperson like, say, Jackie Chan and his crew. Yet you can see that's really her as you can see her face (there were no face replacments in 1980's HK action movies). She isn't even a trained martial artist or stage combat performer and she's yet she's still one of the best in the business. She's absoultely incredible.
I remember in some interview where she stated that Martial Art stunts in a movie are like "dancing choreography." Pretty much the same energy, timing, moves, etc. But I will say, I've always wondered what Michelle's routine, training, behind the scenes Martial arts practices, and nutrition is like.
She was a trained ballet dancer. She was casted as the main actress because she was girl friend of boss of the film company. Yet she proved herself to be more than that, period.
I've seen every single one of Rothrock's films during her prime, and tbh only HK cinema does het justice in front of the camera. A lot of her Hollywood films make her look weak and don't capture enough of her on-screen fluidity in the action genre. Though Hollywood's experience in hand to hand combat was no where near Hong Kong's back in the day.
Hope they make an Expendables movie but all women: Cynthia Rothrock, Michelle Yeoh, Milla Jovovich, Kate Beckinsale, Carrie - Ann Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, Linda Hamilton, Sigourney Weaver and Uma Thurman.
This is way more impressive than what you see in the fight scenes in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Not that I mean any disrespect to the performers in that film. I'm sure they did their best (and probably better than I could), but Cynthia Rothrock is incredible!

Jomar Beran Her best ones are made in Hong Kong, she made a bunch of American ones but they are all pretty bad. Sonya Blade from Mortal Kombat is based on her though so there's that.
Competition was very tough. So its harder to get yourself heard when the competition are motherfcking Jackie Chan, Chow Yin Fat, etc... I'd argue that she have not meet the director that would have make her career break through. Arnie might have been stuck to b-movie if he have not met James Cameron who made him the Terminator
Maybe the Godfrey Ho crap put you off. Try to seek out the HK ones. She is awesome and was a crush of mine for years. Shes in her 60s now and still looks amazing.
I came here because of Stuart's rec at the end of the latest flop house episode. I am not disappointed. Also, I now totally see where Tarantino got the inspiration for the railing scene with the crazy 88s towards the end of kill bill.
Me too! I was ashamed that the only Cynthia Rothrock movie I’ve seen is the Rifftrax version of Honor & Glory - had no idea how much of a badass she is!
Agree with Gungriffen here, To see the best of Rothrock avoid her American straight to video films and stick to her Hong Kong roles. She was always more in the "what could have been" bracket. Although I can't blame her for going for the easy pay day for these American films, they just never played to her strengths. I can't think of a memorable fight in most of them and even her most well known American films China O'Brien series aren't great imo. She had no Bloodsport or Hard Target or Kickboxer type film like Van Damme had to break out with. You look at Yeoh action period from 80's up to Oscar winning Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. She had Magnificent Warriors, Royal Warriors, god damn Police Story 3 (she's best thing in it too), The Heroic trio, Supercop 2, Tai Chi Master and Wing Chun then came Tomorrow Never Dies. She also slowly started to do more dramatic work at that time too leading up the Bond film, so it wasn't that shocking when she left the action roles behind her eventually. Yeoh although like Rothrock was typecast for a while as a action star after Yes, Madam. She just picked her action roles a lot more carefully then Rothrock did. Even in "Undefeatable" she doesn't get to fight the main villain, that would have been a awesome fight with Rothrock character having to use everything to overcome a jacked up psycho martial artist villain who killed her sister. But nope she gets her ass kicked and has to be recused by the jacked up cop. If Rothrock broke out in last decade or so, I think she might had a more successful career in action films.
In a time before Ronda Rousey or even Laila Ali, Cynthia Rothrock was one of the few female martial artists who helped pave the way for others like her in the late 20th Century. From what I've read, she's a real life badass

Cynthia and Michelle are a phenomenal martial arts team. Rock on!
Every scene is a treasured one.
Thank you to all involved in this film!
As a filmmaker, I’m just trying to wrap my mind around the level of editing that went into this production. 🤯🤯🤯🤯
both women soo cool esp michelle....i already watched most her early hong kong movies...she's a pleasure to watch
MIchelle Yeoh and CYNTHIA ROTHROCK! I didn't know this gem existed. Two Queens in one place. God Bless Hong Kong Cinema.
New Algorithm I guess lol.
I uploaded this 8 years ago and all of the sudden it's skyrocketing in views.
RUclips has been recommending old videos these days. I wonder what's up with them. Anyway, congrats!
I'll watch anything with Cynthia!
new algorithm? nope
Netflix has a new documentary on Hong Kong action movies. She is mentioned in it.
@@juhaleinivaara7268 What's the name of it?
She was such a beast in her prime. While I enjoy majority of her movies I think her Hong Kong films really showcased her best n finest work.
You mean Cynthia? Yes definitely.. even she said that she had to really work herself out for any fight scene in hong kong .
@@zahemi914 yea I meant her. I've been trying desperately to find her Hong kong films but I'm coming up empty. Can only find fight scenes from the movies but not the whole movie.
rothrock from Scotland yard
She was rapid and hit hard for a woman. She would tear 95 percent of people apart on the planet.
@@alanchamberlain9902 Facts!
Michelle Yeoh gets older her career seems going higher and might get an Oscar nomination. Hope somebody offers Cynthia Rothrock a decent role in a big budget tv of film
Yes Michelle does. Nominated for Everywhere
Respect to both of these talented ladies. They kicked ass in this video.
She won Oscar yesterday.
The choreographed fight scene is amazing. They sure don't do like this these days
Watching Cynthia and Michelle together fighting is like Chun-Li and Cammy fighting together!
Well, Cynthia actually inspired Sonya Blade. Just a little fun fact. Lol
You could also say chizuru and king from "king of fighters" as well
She's ladies are badass 👍🏻💯🙏🏻 I'm surprised they and QT never made a film together.
We need more female fighters like this.
Call that a fight scene, ptttt. Where's all the quick cuts? I mean. you can actually see them doing the moves :-)
Andrew Thorne One thing I fucking hate about modern fight scenes is zoomed in, rapid cut, shakey cam filming. I don't know if it was Batman Begins that started it but it was the first time I noticed it.
Think it became "trendy" with the Borne Identity. The Taken films have made it ridiculous, with one scene of Neeson climbing a fence looking like there are 18 quick cuts. ruclips.net/video/gCKhktcbfQM/видео.html CLIMBING A FUCKING FENCE. That's what i love about John Wick, it's almost like they forgot to buy enough camera's so you get to see what they do ruclips.net/video/7zmuvbwnXGE/видео.htmlm24s

Batman begins had sick fight scenes. You take that back!
But yes Bourne started it
@@andrewthorne3570The Bourne Supremacy to be more specific.
@@daoyang6055 Batman Begins had such choppy editing during the action, you can barely see anything.
Man, Rothrock was THE martial arts woman when I was a kid. Badass!
Damn, Yeoh is so young here.
After watching this movie and another one from the series, Royal Warriors, I totally fall in love with her.... I was just... 10 years old maybe
Congrats Michelle Yeoh! You have come a long way from starring in these action movie to winning the Academy Award!
Given what passes for award-worthy movies lately, that might be considered a step _back,_ mind you. Not going all rose-tinted-glasses "all old movies were better" bullshit, but this particular movie is better than most anything I've watched in the last two or three years.
Wow! Cynthia and Michelle were badass together. They should do more movies together.
I agree 👍
In Hollywood........
Marvel could never. These are masterpieces of choreography and stunts. Granted numerous safety issues but still. Fucking amazing.
Our childhood was cool. Growing up watching these kinds of movies was very good back then
0:11 - 0:55. Both impressive and beautiful fight, especially how she controls the bo at 0:34. Incredible.
Michelle Yeoh is incredible
Roger murre
I love hearing about Michelle Yeoh fans telling me about how awesome she is because they just found out about her in 2022.
Better late than never.
Cynthia - total bad ass. Try showing this to Charlies Angels 2019....
Just... don't
Michelle - sharper than nails.
Hah, even the old Angels look like super action movies compared to this.
Dicades and million of dollars later Hollywood still can't replicate the magic of 80s action movies 🎉🎉🎉
THAT WAS EXCELLENT! I have to see the entire movie now!
Michelle Yeoh, the one action star that keeps up with the guys.
Hope they make an Expendables movie but all women: Cynthia Rothrock, Michelle Yeoh, Milla Jovovich, Kate Beckinsale, Carrie - Ann Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, Linda Hamilton, Sigourney Weaver and Uma Thurman.
@Raquel Dalisay 😂tf?
3rd act Kristy Swanson shows up as the real Buffy ;)
@Raquel Dalisay and kim chiu
I'm in my 40's now.... and I STILL have the BIGGEST crush on both Cynthia AND Michelle!
(Love you gals!!❤️👍)
This is way more impressive than what you see in the fight scenes in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Not that I mean any disrespect to the performers in that film. I'm sure they did their best (and probably better than I could), but Cynthia Rothrock is incredible!
.
Wow! Both Cynthia Rothrock AND Michele Yeoh together and Michelle Yeoh has a pixie cut? Amazing martial arts scene. Cynthia is a heart throb!
Blue Mary & Sonya Blade of real life.
Wonderful!
I know Sonya is actually based on her but is Blue Mary as well?
Wasn't Blue Mary based off of Android 18?
A masterpiece of a fight scene which sadly cannot be reproduced today…..
The stuntmen are incredible
A *lot* of injuries on the set of this one, for sure.
they dont get enough credit
Yes they were, may they rest in peace. Cant tell me 1:04 aint dead
@@carbon.the.christ5626 "how do we film the part where he flips off the balcony and lands on his head?" "Throw him head first off the balcony and forward his check to his family"
@@carbon.the.christ5626 lol thinking the same thing!
My Gawd look at that Rothrock? She is the great white hope of Kung-Fu cinema every move is a whirlwind and her Ky-Yah is a force of nature we’ve never had another since
I'd pick Cynthia over Seagal tbh
Yes I super agree 100%
Ok, WOW!? I know this is already an old film but DAMN GIRLS!? These ladies can definitley fight! and they did the fight amazingly well! I wish they would use them as an influence when making new female fighting movies. like CHARLIE"S ANGELS for example. and for those upcoming movies for this generation. :)
Charlie angels fake fight, why you compare people that don't know martial art😏😏 with the people that know martial art like cynthia and others
those were the days when martial artist on screen really know martial arts
Rgy
This is what 80s and 90s feminine heroes looked like. No extra makeup, sexy outfit, over-the-hill attitude. Just plain looks and willing to bleed in fights.
Не е за вярване,че и след толкова години ми е забавно да гледам това ! Въпреки всичките му недостатъци!

2:32 Oh, my God! 🤣I almost pissed myself. That was so unexpected. I don't what was better: the growl or the mustache + eyebrows.
To be an action star in the Hong Kong film industry is no small thing, you have to be damn good AND work your well-toned buttocks off! Full respect to Cynthia and Michelle!
Amazing how their good choreography and the filmmaker speeding up the fight scenes is still a thrill to watch..!
Girl power! Cynthia and Michelle taking those boys to school!
This is why 70~80's movie like these are the best. Maybe 90's too. I remember Hong Kong had so many of these and I was in love
No cgi, I miss fights like that
And no shaky cam :-)
I'm just here to say go and watch Everything Everywhere All at once.
Who's still watching this in 2019 Last comment
Watched it today. xD
just.
2020 ^^
Movie name
at this woman Cynthia Rothrock l saw her in few movies to fight in the channel TVC from mexico since l was a kid and now l have 38 years old
Now let's see if Jennifer Lawrence and Viola Davis, with all their ignorance and self-righteousness, can do these kinds of action movies.
They cannot do it without CGI. That's why they are not credible action heroines.
Huh, that's better coreography than the most well-known martial arts films. Well in other words, the best fight coreography I think I've ever seen. (Apart from the fact that I enjoy slightly more realistic fights more, like The Warriors bathroom scene)
Definitivamente Cynthia Rothrock y Michelle Yeohson todas unas eminencias y leyendas de las artes marciales, son todas unas fieras a la hora de combatir cuerpo a cuerpo.
This is the best fight scene I have never seen! Thanks very much for posting.
makes me questions why I havent seen more of Cynthia Rothrock films?? Especially 80s and 90s were the martial art primes!

Shes in her 60s now and still looks amazing.

can any fight scenes top this one?
One of the best fight scenes ever filmed. Only a few surpass this (Police Story for example).
I can't find this movie anywhere! Only bits and pieces here on RUclips.
Tarantino, a big fan of hk movie
In my Childhood I watched that movie 100 Times. It is one of the best fight scenes. How they cut the Fighting scenes with that speed is brillant.
These 2 are my most favourite Martial artists
Saddam Hussein has some moves..
In a time before Ronda Rousey or even Laila Ali, Cynthia Rothrock was one of the few female martial artists who helped pave the way for others like her in the late 20th Century. From what I've read, she's a real life badass
