    I just got my first wing, used for GH practice. The FIRST time ever clipping in I was so excited I forgot to twist first and practiced like this (all of 2 weeks ago, ha). For a complete noob it was nice not having to think "left hand for right side of wing". It was actually very easy this way. I knew I would have to make the twist and learn the "real" way if I wanted to spin and take off.
    When purely groundhandling I also grab the brake lines above the handles on the side which controls the same side wingtip - Like Gemma's doing at 8:35 - (opposite of when in flight) which also makes it easy to control the same side. Of course that still doesn't work with the spin for takeoff without dropping the brake, but again, an easy noob trick.
    Thanks for all your instructive vids, you guys rock.

    This is how I learned to do it myself and is more fun, it's especially easy just to learn to swap hands at a later date after you mastered ground handling.

    I am impressed how Gemma is comfortable doing GH. Well done!

    Good morning, or afternoon, funny when I started playing with my little wing I started by what you where doing there it helped see the lines and what they did, then hooked up in reverse and found my pee little brain had a hard time pulling correct brake input, but then realized that I could leave the brakes attached and get the correct break above the pulleys. Those little dunes and gentle slope look so inviting, see you tomorow.

    So funny! This is the only way I have been able yet to do my ground handling with my BGD Seed (What I learned from a single kitting lesson on the beach before realizing how out of shape I was!). I'm still afraid to cross the lines and twist forward no matter how many instructional videos or books I seen! It's counter intuitive to me to cross my brake lines. I've learned to walk backwards 😊. When finally there was enough wind for me to walk forward this way I was on Cloud Nine! Although I have been dreaming to fly since the mid seventies watching the pioneers of Hang Gliding in Rio de Janeiro from above at Pedra da Gavea, I'll be doing ground handling for quite a while to get into shape before flying. I just enrolled in your amazing new ground handling course to also ground handle my brand new full wing and finally learn to do it right! Your RUclips Channel is by far my favorite! Thank you for all this detailed information and inspiration to us beginners! Cheers. 🙏

      Thanks a lot for the support Alex and we hope that the course will help. Also many thanks for leaving us such a nice review! For sure at the very beginning connecting the risers "wrong" can help in just getting a little comfortable with the wing, but after having the risers crossed over whilst facing the wing is something that will feel strange for a little while (say a couple of months) but then you'll always do and feel familiar with it for the rest of your flying career! Keep going keep practising and if you get stuck let us know and together we can do it I'm sure. Groundhandle hard, fly easy :)

    Love you guys, good stuf you make!
    You have perfect place for GH fun.
    Practice make's it perfect!
    No matter how much you fly, groundhandling is always interesting.
    Instead of just pulling its usefull squating(pulling wing down) before takeoff because it pitches wing foward and gives you moment to get forward momentum.
    It helps you getting that jump-flys on high wind flatland GH.
    Have fun!

    I know this video is dated but I think it's worth commenting on a significant issue.
    When the risers are crossed as in the proper reversed position, weightshift is more normal. Meaning that when one turns to face the low side of a glider, then that tensions the riser going to the high side while easing tension on the riser going to the low side. To bring the glider back up.
    In the uncrossed position turning to face a low side tensions both sides equally. Hence doesn't really do much.

    Of course it's easier. That's how kitesurfing kites or any simple 2 line kites work. Paragliding is the weird one. If you come from another kiting sport to paragliding, the fact that you have controls crossed when you face the kite feels like that crazy reversed bicycle. But once you "click" in, you'll be able to switch from crossed to straight and back with no issues. Anyway, great video Andre!

    Funny for me because when I learned (1991) we always reversed with our hands on the respective brakes while looking at the wing and then had to let go and spin, grab the brakes and go. I still get my brain twisted around with the modern technique

    Yaaaayy! WoW .I must be a mind reader or something.I couldn't wait to see what happens.Thank You both.I noticed Gemma was having a Rotor issue flying over her worlds smallest dunes,but her GH job pays off! Is it possible to do one of those helicopter tricks on ground like them Redbull alpina guys,,,Safetly? Lol

    Just curious as a future pilot, what is the wind speed range in which one fly relatively safely? Yes I've seen videos where people take off in 40kmh winds but that's the extreme. What is the regular wind range for regular pilots?

    • @AndreBandarra1
      @AndreBandarra1  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Paul, it depends on a number of factors, but I would say generally if a pilot is flying the correct wing for their weight the lightest wind you can fly (soaring) is around 15-20km/h and yes 35-40km/h is the very top end for most wings.

    • @SkywalkerPaul
      @SkywalkerPaul 6 лет назад

      Ok. I thought it's something between 5kmh and 15kmh... Hmm... Does this means that at all the flying sites there must be at least a 15kmh before people takeoff?

    • @AndreBandarra1
      @AndreBandarra1  6 лет назад +1

      If it is a site with thermals you can take off with zero wind and then you'll be going down until you find a thermal to take you up. If you are soaring a hill you need wind on that hill to create a wave of air (lift) that you can ride up and down the ridge, like a surfer almost, and for that there are certain factors like how high the hill is and what shape it is, but yes I would say in most places it is unlikely to be flyable below 15km/h

    another thing that i would like to see is to use the brake lines only... usually I touch the lines a lilte above the brake pulleys in reverse... i agree with Gema's statement ... It's sounds easier work in this way

    I've still yet to use big ears on my epic. I've only used the speed bar once on purpose during a short 1 min ttb flight. That should all change this weekend as I go to tenerife.
    Keep up the great work guys.
    Next....... cobra launch technique!

      That's just because it was light wind and she pulled a lot on them :) usually in flight you can choose how big you want your ears to be :)

    Easy on the ground as long as you face the glider. Just like handling a kitesurf. But flying backwards must be really disturbing.

  • @MrJdsenior

    My guess, pre-watch, effectively the same thing as in RC flying when you are flying toward and away from yourself, doesn't seem like it should be a "big deal",. With the parafoil, it's the same as the so-called "reverse launch" and "after the turnaround" mode.
    Just don't try it on a bicycle (reversing the steering), because apparently that is IMPOSSIBLE to accommodate without MUCH practice, and if you practice exclusively on a reverse steering bike until you master it, which seems to take a LOT of hours, you apparently have to RELEARN the standard right bar forward to turn left arrangement. I suspect the extreme difficulty with a reverse steering bicycle MIGHT have to do with the fact that you normally turn the handle bar opposite to lean for the turn, and you then lean left to turn left, so there are a few "directly coupled" things going on there...MUCH more complex than just a left/right control switch.

    Really nice to see, how easily those risers are 'available' for hands in such config. 'A's are getting more tense, so it seemed like it helped to inflate & stabilize the wing.
    And yes Gem, you're slowly but persistently getting there 😀. It's been proved at least in sports medicine, that you need between 6000-8000 repetitions of certain body forms (musculoskeletal system, 'muscle memory') to build up/rewire new or proper ones. So the more you do, the quicker Andre will be left in that thermal below 😂.
