    Ya know, this gives me all kinds of ideas because there are so many books at the Goodwill with nice bindings and sturdy covers, but the books themselves are mass-produced trash or whatever. I never thought to cannibalize then upcycle them. You've given me all kinds of ideas now!

      Yeah, some books and newspapers are pretty much like an analog OG form of Internet/social media/content communication (albeit they do not have the same reach as the Internet/social media, but they have the benefit of being more tactile). The invention of the European version of the printing press was similar in impact on society to the invention of the Internet. People experienced similar stuff in dealing with the world of print/media as people do today with online media (including mob mentality stuff and cancel culture, like when Mark Twain had to move out of San Francisco after making some controversial media at the time he worked in journalism).

    I have legit bought used books before just because I liked the covers, so this is a really cool idea. I'd definitely be interested in seeing more videos like this. Maybe a way to upcycle old/outdated textbooks would be cool. When I volunteered at a charity shop, we always had a glut of those

    0:44 if in the future you want to make paper with the inside pages of a book, and use that paper you made inside of the upcycled book itself, there's a really good video about the process by NevermindLisa here on youtube where she did it on her 2020 planner!

    This is so neat. Thanks for sharing. I can't wait to see more. Dollar Tree is also a good place to source books for remaking. I like the thrift store books for the older aesthetic but it's sometimes easier to deconstruct a new book. Either way they both make interesting journals/sketchbooks. I once used one for a class project in college and everyone was so impressed I had to teach a few classmates to make their own and make a few for others. The professor was very impressed with us and it went into our grades.

    Love the idea of reusing the cover of a book like that!
    What I’ve always wondered is, what happens when you’re done using the paper in the book? What if you want to reuse the cover itself and put new pages in it?
    I’d love your thoughts or a video on being able to reuse a cover once you’re done using the pages inside and want to replace or add more.
    Thanks again for a great video!

    Always conflicted: more pages (that might never get used) or 10 like this tutorial (so book is filled & done). What's everyone's sweet spot when it comes to pages?

    • @kriscook2423
      @kriscook2423 2 года назад +16

      Small gives the satisfaction of a completed book. There's just something about holding a book that is filled front to back. I also like to use smaller books for projects and themes. It's a bit more manageable for my adhd and perfectionism. I still love big books but I struggle to complete them. I really want one of those 600 page sketchbooks.

    • @angiegabriela1058

      @@kriscook2423 i agree, I find it difficult to fill a really big book and sometimes I get frustrated or end up abandoning that book and moving to a smaller one that I feel more comfortable with

    • @machin8593
      @machin8593 2 года назад +3

      Different numbers of pages for different intentions. Do you want a sketchbook to take everywhere with you? Take a smaller sized book with a lot of pages. Do you have an idea for a series of drawings or collages in the same style? Maybe a book with just the right amount of pages would make it a cool project

    • @alexbrown7071
      @alexbrown7071 2 года назад +2

      I used to add more pages cause I felt thick books were more pleasing to the eyes but when it came to actually writting in it I got intimidated and never wrote in them. Now I prefer smaller books like this, I feel more free in it and if I get bored of it I don't have to put up with it for too long!

    • @kriscook2423
      @kriscook2423 2 года назад +5

      Another idea could be for a traveler's style book so you can have removable insert books and put them together in a larger cover book. Small book to work, large book to store and be aesthetically pleasing. Cover the inserts in scrapbook paper or gift bags/wrapping paper from dollar tree to make them appealing.

    I just found your videos! They're super helpful. I've been doing coptic stitch book binding for a few years now, but really want to expand my skillset. I did think about & then find a photo of a spine braid - so coptic stitch binding with a braid that goes vertically down the spine as an aesthetic detail. However, I cant find anything on how to do it! Would love a tutorial on that if youre up for it!
