Experience China's Pyramid Apartments, Inside Like a Massive Maze.

- Hi everyone! Today I will take you to visit a pyramid apartment in China. It is located in Huaqiao Town, Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province, which is adjacent to Shanghai. This apartment is well-known for its unique shape, but it has also been controversial.
The design of this apartment was created by M.A.O., a Japanese architecture firm. The design is called a "stepped-back design" because each floor steps back from the one below it. This allows each floor to have a garden-style balcony, but it also has some drawbacks. The interior ventilation is inconvenient and the lighting is poor. In addition, the apartment has over 1,000 different floor plans, almost all of which are lofts. This makes the interior ventilation, fire protection, and pipework design very complex.
So let's take a look at this amazing building together!

This concept is anti hookups, anti Uber eats, anti pizza delivery, anti visitors, period! They’ll never find you!
Then perfect for me 😊
Good, people need to get out of the house more 😂
@@Mira-ri7vs 100%! In pretty much all Asian countries (Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, etc) including SE Asia and India regions, we’re almost leaving our house every single day to sit down and eat, or going to retrieve groceries for homecooked meals. Not many (if any) places will deliver, and the streets can be too way too traffic-heavy for “Uber Eats.” Even for the elderly. If you live in pretty much any apartment building, you should be expected to be leaving your house to get a meal cause no one is going to bring it to you. Delivery has almost mostly been a “western concept”…
As for hookups, that’s on them…lol
This apartment building is very interesting and is a “social” concept for sure!
@@Annzuu-bu6ue And, that’s why Asian people live longer, because they aren’t as lazy as others.
All asian countries and people are beautiful and the architecture have always been second-to-none. 💕💕 Love that!
Love from Aussieland by the way! Cheers!
@Annzuu-bu6ue my God. Go to China for once. Delivering food to your house is literally everywhere. Many electric scooters everywhere for that. Hahaha your not in line with reality.
Finally, China is the first nation that has entered the future! Salute to the Chinese superhero government. I wish that our Indian government and leaders could undertake initiatives like this, but the people of India face unfortunate circumstances." We Are So Unlucky🥲
I don't know about u folks but the whole thing has lifted my heart. The coldness, the concrete, the small size of the apartments, the scale. humanization erased in a functional and productive society where only profit counts. This building is sick and drags its residents into this darkness.
I would love to see a similar scale in Singapore to compare and see what make those building livable.
Thanks for your work on this channel. I really love the concept. Keep it up!!
You confused me so do you like it or not? 😂
The video 😅.. not the building.
@@romainbey Gotcha! 😆👍🏻
Greenery & water features, or lack thereof. All the empty spaces need to be filled with plants, and I think that would make all the difference to me. The grey upon grey upon grey of it all, and that endless concrete looks dead, unfriendly, depressing and lacks everything that's good and calming in this world. It seems utterly void of life and happiness.
@@SeaBear77 learn the history if China of killing off birds and shit because they thought birds destroy their crops.. birds are essential for a lot of things in nature. Go to China u wont see any birds in the sky. (Really)
This is a concrete jungle. Not a tree, a shrub, a flower or grass in sight. No birds chirping or flying about. No sight of children playing. Lots of empty stores and echoes. It's impersonal and anonymous. Places like this soon become rundown and neglected.
I would give up the will to live if I had to be there.
Look again for the greenery 😊😂❤ how much do you need 😊
The biggest positive here is the crazy amount of natural light each household gets in these units. Seldom do you find that in a standard multi unit building. The greenery can be improved if potted plants were introduced in the common areas. In the private balconies, it’s really up to the residents to give it all character. As for the stillness and quiet - some folks love that over the hustle and bustle of a busy street.
@@reckonerwheel5336agree make my own greenery..Ivy hanging all over my balcony with all the natural light is what I need and it has that inside apartment..I’ll green it up all over..I’d live there if need be..my favorite places in China are the people that live in mountains as high as the sky..On top and in the mountains themselves..blows my mind.🌟
this is why the world loves Japan..they don't have to build huge structures, they always put plants even in the narrowest alleys.....this country is like North Korea..they build to be seen by the world, and then everything falls down in ruins. 5 years

Would have Liked to see more of the inside on an 🎉. You were pretty quick with that part. Most of the “living” there. Happens in the apartments. Would love to see the kitchen, bathroom etc. Just a thought.
You cant because most is just empty shells and nobody living there... ur not very familiar with these kind of things in China. Its just empty shells to look good.
For those interested in this concept, look at Habitat 67 in Montreal, Canada, designed by Moshe Sofdie for the Worlds Fair in 1967. It is far smaller than this complex, but the concept is quite similar.
exactly, but this looks way cooler
It baffles me that anybody would feel an interest in such a horrible thing.
🌈COLOR! I just figured out what’s missing! Why not paint the retail shops one color…the food establishments another…the offices…the apartments…you know, and so on… AND, put in some grassy areas and plant some trees…plants, drinking fountains, swings, slides, etc. Considering the drab buildings and polluted skies all around, these additions would help considerably!☺️
The whole point of the structure is to provide homes for some of China’s massive population!
A totally unique design! Thanks for taking the videos and sharing this with us!
I am not fond of this design; the lower levels do not have privacy.
It’s ok, those are for the poor people (in Canada at least, the higher the floor & the better the view, the more rent/sale money they can for a unit). Putting up a cloth gazebo or building a pergola with covering would make a lower unit cozy & private.
But have sun

This building has a unique design. I love it because each room can have the balcony like this. Thanks for sharing.
i belive inside are many rooms even without a window or not?
Felicitaciones .
This concept and architectural style is suited for areas with great natural scenery like beach resorts or mountain getaways so the occupants can take in all the surrounding natural beauty.

It's a really cool idea! Imagine it with a fresh coat of paint, green landscaping and a pool below, and plants, grills and personalized adornments on each balcony. In the apartments, the blocky looking low walls framing the stairs to the second floor would be opened up with railings.
It's very unique. May I ask where are all the people? It looks as if it was made for thousands of people to shop, eat, & live in, but it looks like a ghost town. This is so sad.... I really would have liked to have seen some of the apartments along with the kitchens. Thank you for sharing this. I find it wonderfully interesting to see how people in other places live.

This is reminiscent of the brutalist architecture of the Barbican in a very 21st-century way. Also, seeing upside down houses is pretty trippy. I get why giving people outdoor spaces so important and why the design had to take place the way it did. I love outdoor spaces more than interiors. I’m so glad I fell upon your video

Nice concept. Could be improved. Slope buildings offer more air space between buildings.
They need skylight mirror tubes in the center of the pyramid !
Internal parts of the pyramid should be all offices and businesses , social spaces, noone should live permanently on the inside apartment.
Terraces need privacy blinds for private spaces. Those offer community IF you know the neighbors. Some hill villages have those.
So cool, with everyone getting a balcony. And not ridiculously tall like some buildings.
It reminds me of The Back Rooms and the movie Dredd!
Thanks for showing us! When was this built? Alot of the plaster, paint, edges are cracking and crumbling…terrible build quality especially if it’s recently built... is it tofu dreg?

I like the architecture and efficient design. The blend of commercial and residential is efficient and provides living needs in walking distance. It has character. It does seem to have a little bit of minimalism/brutalism design in some areas, but not a bad thing just efficient oriented. Seems like there would be good energy in a residential complex like this. The walk-through reminds me of playing a game like Halo in a dystopian city. Unfortunately, this particular complex has signs of tofu-dreg construction.
Yes, the quality looks terrible.
I totally agree. It looks like a nice design and idea, but construction and material quality looks terrible.
They needed happier colors or something, I get the dystopian vibe too. I’d like to see something like this if the Japanese built it, bet the vibe and quality would be off the charts! 👍🏻

Just fantastic. Much better than Heatherwicks tree apartments. Also this design owes alot to early Moshe Safdie. Look at Habitat '67 in Montreal.
architecturally it’s very unique and provides much for the residents… I would really like to see natural plants and greenery all throughout it though… it’s feeling just a bit too sterile as is.. the soft neutrals, greys, white and beiges provide an excellent canvass for plants….. greenery and flowers, trees, etc. would soften it and nurture the souls.. maybe several water sculptures placed around the mezzanines also, to, again, engage the senses and break up the monotony of all the concrete..
Where are all the Residents ? I see NOBODY.

I get the feeling it is not finished. The poor construction makes people feel unsafe and either did not move in or they moved out. There is potential with the concept for a greener scenery.
Dude, thank you so much for the walking video footage and I really appreciate the frankness in your description about some of the building’s issues. For the sake of the families living there, I hope these issues won’t be catastrophic and somehow, someway these people can eke out happy lives there.
Architecturally, this maximizes natural sunlight for the same building footprint. The elevators are not inclined and are in the interior walkways that brings everything together ... brilliant ideas.
Reminiscent of Moshe Safdie's *Habitat 67* .
I agree. Great concept just poor execution on construction leaving it undesirable to live in. It has unrealized potential. Would be amazing to see this concept in another country.
Those architects were tripping!
Idk why but ever since I visited this resort in Spain I've loved the idea of these massive, arcology-like, pyramid structures. I wish we had more architectural experimentation here in the UK. Terraced houses, for all their positives, do get a bit uninspiring after a while.
