Zappa was a true creative genius and a genuine inquisitive mind; ahead of his time, and ours. Influenced by blues figures from his youth and academical composers like Stravinsky or Varese. Funk today, jazzy tomorrow, genius all week. Listen to Watermelon in Easter Hay if you wanna fly, or Inca Roads for a mind blowing musical experience. But you have tons of music at your disposal: G-Spot Tornado from The Yellow Shark, Peaches En Regalia from Hot Rats, Brown Shoes Don’t Make It from Absolutely Free, Punky’s Whips from Zappa in New York… His bands were always outstanding, not anyone is capable of playing (note by note) this complex and rich compositions. This is the reason why he was constantly looking for new talent. He didn’t ask yor name, if you could play his stuff, you were in (Vai, Bozzio, Colaiutta, Underwood, Keneally and so on).
    Music is the Best.
    Cheers, mate.

Frank Zappa was a musical genius. He was one of the most incredible guitar players of all time, and you really haven't heard anything yet. Frank had an amazing grasp on The human condition, and the gullibility of the masses. He always thought outside the hypercube. Much of his music foretold current conditions in the world. You will notice that in live performances, the music sounds different than the studio recordings. He never repeats a guitar solo. He once said that a solo is a piece of time that you get to decorate. Look up "Inca Roads". It will blow your mind, or at least knock your socks off.

It may have been because I knew some of his chums back in Charlotte, so the law of social triangularity had already created a partial meeting between our souls, which only needed to be completed from a dotted line to a straight line, conceptually. He is America's great genius. Love that you're opening up this can. Watch his early TV appearances, even on the Tonight Show, with Steve Allen. Peace. db

To get a picture of his opinion and status: check a song from his very first album, 1966, "Trouble every day". For genres and styles, he mixed everything. Pick some of his instrumental pieces. Some half a dozen albums are close to pure instrumental, like "The grand wazoo". There are a lot of musical surprices everywere but the lyrics may hide the treasures...

He had a song called "Ina Gada Stravinsky". I met him. He had over 79 albums, (half double albums) Great watching it with you. Hey Hari he wrote an autobiography "No Commercial Potential" His son Dwezil just re-mastered Deep Purple Machine Head. Zappa nearly always had at least a couple of black band members, and he really loved early R'n'B (back in the day when R'n'B meant something else than it seems to mean nowadays). Actually, really early on, in the 60's before The Mothers of Invention, he played in what was pretty much the only mixed black/white band in the vicinity. And that simple fact caused them quite some trouble trying to get gigs in those days.

Zappa is an experience of endless soundscapes. Here's a song list to help you navigate.
Black Napkins, Water Melon in Easter Hay, Apostrophe. 3 instrumentals with killer guitar solos.
Blessed Relief, Waka Jawaka & Duke of Orchestral Prunes are 3 instrumentals involving a much larger ensemble.
The Adventures of Gregory Peckory is a one of a kind masterpiece.
    W/ Lyrics
    Joes Garage
    Uncle Remus, another great lyric.
    Zombie Wolf
    Yo Mama
    You Are What You Is
    Live
Chepnis (live with no video, story behind the lyrics)
Frank Zappa and the Ikettes Recording at Bolic Sound - 1973 (this video is footage from the studio recording of Chepnis)

Yes, that was Frank on guitar, and the backup singers here are Tina Turner and the Ikettes. I recommend Don't Eat the Yellow Snow for someone just getting into Zappa. Frank was such a good guitar player he by popular demand released two sets called “shut up and play yer guitar”. They are just guitar solos from his vault from various live and studio adventures during his career. He used other talents like Adrian Belew and Steve Vai on guitar in his band over the years too. Just to name a few.

Zappa's music background is crazy. His very first band was a mixed race R&B band, in the 1950s, in the middle of the desert in Southern US. You can imagine how well that went down with the locals lol. But yeah blues and R&B are very fundamental to the zappa sound as it's definitely what he grew up on.
Also, if Zappa had been alive during the internet, I genuinely think he would have ran for president. He was talking about it a lot in his last years and getting more and more political, i think that was something he was working towards. At one point a couple years before he passed on he was the Cultural Minister for the Czech Republic Government just after they left the USSR. True story. The man was the definition of genius.

You’ve listened to Cosmik Debris from Apostrophe (1974) and I’m the Slime from Overnight Sensation (1973). Both tracks had some (uncredited) backing vocals by the Ikettes. He was definitely funky in those days. I suggest you listen to both of those albums. As you listen to his other work you will realize that he could write music in any style and combine them. He got noticed in the 60s for his lyrics and music satirizing American culture. While US culture evolved so did he. His composition was incredible. His guitar playing was amazing. Bear in mind his lyrics were often meant to shock but often have a point to be made.

    • @Frunobulax74

Ike Turner insisted that Zappa pay them no more than $25 per song to stay inline with what he paid.
Later when Ike heard the songs in playback he said "What is this shit" and refused to allow the singers to be credited on the album. 😅😅
