Great zappa Era. This, one size fits all, apostrophe, etc great in a short period of time..
Love this song. Relatively simple musically by Zappa standards, great social commentary without being offensive, and that nasty guitar tone as he strangles the F out of the pentatonic scale.

Zappa did this live on Saturday Night Live when he was guest host/musician. The legendary SNL announcer Don Pardo did vocals for him too. The video is out there to be seen. Y'all should check it out for fun for yourselves. Blessings.

This song is more lyrically pertinent now then then and it was pertinent then . The announcers voice is Don Pardo who used to announce for Saturday Night Live .

Camirillo brillo from overnight sensation is one of the best songs on the album and recieved a lot of radio air time

@@BillM1960 In the 1970s yes. Did it get as much air play as say The Eagles or ccr, no. But it did get its fair share along with "Montana" and a few other songs. But your right , out of all the music he made there were only a handful of songs that recieved prime air time.

I bought this album back in the day.. I was 13 or so.. my friend had musical family.. they introduced me to this .. I remember listing to the Live at The Filmore album.. I was 12 or so.. didn't't even understand it's lyrics (thankfully for then!). but, was mesmerised by the music.. I still listen to Overnite Sensation and Apostrophe many, many moons later.. takes me back to my youth, my life back in Scotland.. I love how, unlike many reaction channels.. you are handling different, but great music..

One of my favorites for sure. This era is my personal Zappa sweet spot. This is probably my favorite Zappa album. Alot of soulful, funky grooves on Overnight Sensation. Drums groovin too.
The simplisity is justified. The listener should not distract from the crux ... of the biscuit :)

September '73... High School Daze~ He did this song on SNL, btw...One of my favorite covers by David B. McMacken!
His video version of this on SNL, way back when it was still a fresh and occasionally unpredictable show, features professional NBC announcer Don Pardo reciting the middle section while Frank uses a teacher's rubber-tipped wooden pointer and a blackboard with the words all laid out......Then all that shaving cream oozing from a monitor.....
The following tour season Don toured with Zappa's band just to do that part~~~

Song is short because it was directly pointed at Ted Turner, and Tina played it for her dad. Ted owned the rights to a few ZAPPA Albums. Zappa wanted out of that contract. Story goes, when Tina and the I-kets joined the group, Zappa made this song to spite Ted Turner because he wanted the girls to be paid only $20.00. Or so the story has been told....
You guys probably already know that's Tina Turner and the Ikettes on backup vocals. Ike was mad and didn't want them credited.

Frank Zappa wanted to use backup singers on the songs "I'm the Slime", "Dirty Love", "Zomby Woof", "Dinah-Moe Humm" and "Montana". His road manager suggested The Ikettes, and Ike & Tina Turner were contacted. Ike Turner insisted that Zappa pay the singers, including Tina Turner, no more than $25 per song.[1] However, an invoice shows that they were actually paid $25 per hour, and in total $187.50 each for 7 1/2 hours of service.[2] During the recording sessions at Bolic Sound, Tina brought Ike into the studio to hear the highly difficult middle section of "Montana" which had taken the Ikettes a few days to learn and master. Ike listened to the tape and responded "What is this shit?" before leaving the studio.[1] Ike later insisted that Zappa not credit the Ikettes on the released album.[1]-Wikipedia

Frank commissioned an artist for the album cover, can't remember his name off hand and told him exactly what he wanted. It's supposed to represent how life on the road can affect you, taken, obviously for Frank, to an extreme, lol.

Fun and funky, but accompanying crafted powerful heavy lyrics. the first reaction is always to the awesome as ever music
The Graphic Artwork on the album cover was done by avant garde artist Robert Williams. Williams was apart of a group of graphic artists in the mid to late 60's that included Robert Crumb, the instigator of the infamous "Zap Comix". Artists Spain Rodriguez, Gilbert Shelton, S Clay Wilson, Victor Moscoso, and Rick Griffin, contributed to these masterpieces of unshackled expressionism from the staid conformity and conventionalism in the post war 50's.
When Crumb published the first issue, he said he had no intention of doing any more than that issue. It quickly became an underground classic, prompting further issues. The artwork, storylines -which included scathing anti-facist political satire, hippie and very progressive political satire, very adult storylines (not for fundagelicals), and psychedelia, were presented in a way that blew peoples minds.
If you want insight into the social battles being fought at that time, and that are still with us today, Zap Comix can be an education, enlighting, and mind blowing.

Fun reaction! Drummer is rock'in here (Bozio). CNN, Fox, MSNBC... yup. Ironic thing is, FZ wrote this L O N G before any of those existed (which shows you that his critical assessment was spot on!)

Seeing the SNL version of I'm the Slime is one of my earliest memories of watching TV as a kid with my dad. I'm not old enough for it to have been the original broadcast so it was a re-run but I definitely remember the imagery of the slime pouring out over the TV set. I kept thinking that our TV was going to start spewing out slime everywhere afterwards.

last artist of the 20th century...no one recorded more material whilst he was alived...This guy was an alchemist that was working beyond the studio...he would be appalled to be called an artist but his project is still constructing or composing after his death...the present day composure refuses to die...most music conservatories have courses in the music of Zappa.

The hatching egg is a sexually abused grapefruit by a truck driver in their entourage. I have a framed print of this album cover (front and back) on my bathroom wall. Frank used his time on the road as inspiration (200 Motels) and every piece of this art reflects that. Great reaction to a Zappa classic!

This album was my introduction to the great man, and apart from the early Mothers stuff i don't think there's a better entry point for a teenage know it all! Funky jazz rock played by one of Frank's best bands, and some of his finest solos to boot!

I had the cd with the Apostrophe/Overnite Sensation combo growing up, so I just see them as one album.
Have you seen the two albums on the "Classic albums" video/dvd?. They go through the making of the 2 with the band members, comments from Frank, Vai, Dweezil Cuccurullo and the one i like best, Billy Bob Thornton, his comments are both funny and spot on.

Always loved his acting, but I now know he has impeccable musical tastes too! ;-) I like Ruth's parts, of course, but when Dweezil was working the mixing board to show how much was layered into St Alphonso, it was amazing!

The bit for me when Dweezil was bringing in and out different noises/instruments was, like you said, the layering and texturing, what Dweezil said, for me, is what sets Frank apart and above his contemporaries, he said Frank called it "The eyebrows" So simple yet profound for me.

Hey Paul. Certainly not by Frank’s own standards, or mine for that matter. I believe he considered a great part of his music danceable, Be bop tango, Dancing fool or G-spot tornado come to mind right now.

Salvador Dali....nailed it! The artist, Dave McMacken, was inspired by Dali lol....and yeah it does remind one of the garbage pail kids. McMacken was big name in the graphic design biz and I['m sure he influenced scores of artists

Here's a story. I was once a Mormon. I had a position of leadership. I had to give a talk about the evil influences around us. Yep you guessed it. I quoted this song from start to finish. It was perfect. After the service had ended this guy walked over. He turned out to be one of the big leaders from Salt Lake City. He told me that my sermon was going in his journal straight away. He continued by saying that never before had Frank Zappa been preached in the LDS church. I thought that was a brilliant achievement. He walked away in disgust. I quit the church that very day.

Ha! Frank actually has a piece called "This ain't CNN." He obsessively watched CNN, even though he hated it and really disliked Ted Turner. That piece is one of the very last things he worked on before he died with the Ensemble Modern, and I'm not sure if I'd recommend it as a reaction because it's waaay out there strange.

The album cover is, indeed, very reminiscent of the art-style used for the Garbage Pail Kids cards, but sadly (?) it wasn't actually made by the same artist.
Art Spiegelman was responsible for creating those foul collectibles and I used to own them all. Today, some of them fetch up to 12,000 dollars!!!

@Zolar Czakl I think the point is they are all bad. Almost all of the "official" news and media sources are own by about 6 people/companies and almost all of them have been shown to push their social and political objectives. That's just a nice way of saying they lie, lie and lie. CNN is commonly pointed out because their lies are so blatant and consistent.

I find CNN much worse for things like the time they threatened to Dox a guy who made the meme of Trump beating up the CNN logo. They threated that they wouldn't Dox him if he made a public apology for creating the meme...

Always a fave. Pithier, maybe, than, say, 'Stinkfoot'? I'M pithed! It's hard to get too irate about boot odor. Disinegnuous Media, otoh, falling in line with the cor-pirate collaborators narrative? That's a no-brainer, and even if mine's been eroded by decades of the shit, and I still absorb an inordinate amount, though more selectively in more recent memory, I hope I help promulgate more nuanced and accurate perspectives than they'd prefer us to be privy to.
