Great list of qso's gil. I used to take my 320 out more but not so much this last 12months. My resolution is to make some /p qso's and learn cw this year. Going to have a look at your learning cw vid next

Good video and very interesting to me. So much so, I've bought a PRC 320! Just need the time to set it up and play.
You can rely on a Frenchman to have real style, no-one else would take a fountain pen on location! The rest of us would use a leaky old ball point. Best 73 Gil.

Before S-meters were a common gauge on commercial transceivers, because most early equipment was home brew or recycled military transceivers OP's gave RS/phone and RST/CW and RTTY, hams gave RS and RST. You're going to give report to the other operator a guesstimate signal strength. too bad hams don't want chat a bit on first contact. They rather get the basic information then leave.

Yep, I estimate sometimes. What bothers me most are fake 599 reports..

The reason the dial is not moving is your freq is set up wrong...
You need to be set to a freq that matches your antenna which is, they all dont work well, plus time of day etc. if you swop out the ant for a skywave antenna then you would likely see something but best to review ant therory first to match time of day, conditions, power, ant type and size!!!
You cant just turn on two of these and hear each other or very well even next to each other, you need to be at a distance and take every factor into account. Its a serious indertaking as as an ex british radop it takes 1 month to learn and most giys fail and have to go back for to lecky camp to try again bk in the day 15+ years ago. if you dont pass the course, your kicked out of the unit and sent to basic to review other options, from driver to cheff etc

Hi Gil. I have seen a few of your videos. Thanks for sharing your Clansman use. I replied on another post, but would like to know how you charge your 24v Batteries. I have a DCCU for mine which is 28v, but wondered if buying the 14v DCCU is better than trying to find a 28-30v charger? Any advice would be gratefully received. 73's Paul M0KIA

Hi Gil, I have been following your channel for some time as I too like to get out and do a little QRP/SSB with my Y817. I have recently been given a PRC 320 and I was wondering if you as a user would be kind enough to maybe do a short tutorial video on this lovely radio. I have looked around but cannot find anything that is really suitable. Please forgive me for asking but I think you are probably the best man for the job. Many Thanks Gary M6KVK 73

Great video. do you have a favourite antenna for 20/40 meters for the PRC320?I have a couple of these fantastic radios but have never been able to make any SSB HF QSOs.I know they are transmitting but no luck. I noted you SSB frequency of 142870. Is that your preferred CQ calling freq?73 Dave

For both 20/40 the end-fed from LNR Precision 10/20/40. Same as the PAR.

An 8m wire directly out of the tuner plus a counterpoise work great. Join the PRC-320 WhatsApp group to find other 320 users on the air...

I used a phone app called Ham Morse on iOS.

    Good job! Great video!
Its amazing with all the screaming about the sky is falling ( global warming ) and yet people continue to toss trash like that is what it was made for! People just don't care or take pride in their environment! Its the only one we have! =]
But back to the W3EDP antenna. Ive seen great reviews on it. So I built one. 300 ohm TV twin lead. 4:1 balun and 25ft of RG8X. ( I tried a short 8-12 ft piece of RG58 but did not work! No tune! )
It seems to have great RX! Only made 2 contacts so far. 1 on 40M and 1 on 20M. They both gave lower reports than I gave them but I'm not sure what power they were running. QSO party this weekend and it was fast n furious so I didn't get to ask. Could have been a kilowatt. I was running 100 watts.
Now the real test is to check in on NETs. I prefer that type of operations plus they are there everyday so you can tell how band conditions are easier. Once you know the guys on the NET you know how their signal normally are and establish as like a reference. When conditions are great a wet noodle will do good so talking to the same guys everyday for years you easily know when something changes. Jumping on a freq one day at a portable station doesn't prove much. =]
But I agree. Something isn't exactly right with the W3EDP. Not sure if its the twin lead section or the long wire. Even once I added 25ft of RG8X I still had trouble tuning it! Also I have mine configured in a perfect inverted L about 20-25ft up.
I think it can be a great antenna but I'm not so sure about for portable. If it has to be perfect then its to finicky for portable. I think a doublet is better.
I prefer my 88ft Doublet ( 300 ohm TV twin lead feeder ) as it seems to perform very well, not very hard to install and packs up very nice!
I will check it out again this next week. Get on my O/M NETs and compare signals.

Thanks. I need to build a new one and do more testing...

@@RadioPrepper yeah what I am seeing is to deploy it and keep the Inverted L shape its easier to deploy a doublet in a Inverted V. Unless the tree you need to hang it from is covered in foliage and you can't access a limb and you have to go over the top or something strange the W3EDP might work better. But ideally you need two trees with a strong line between them.
I think it performs well but not as easy to deploy. So a recon of the site before hand is a must I think. If you can drive to the site then no worries. Bring all your portable antennas. But if you have to hike then knowing the site ahead of time is a must. ( I have SOTA in mind as this was mentioned on a video of a guy using it for SOTA. ) Sorta like with you and the tree stump! It worked great say last year but a tree stump no longer supports anything. lol
