    I'm loving the way you talk about the game, the things you prioritise, the nomenclature, your definitions of "good" investigators... they're so *different* to all my Arkham experiences! You and I should have a debate series or something for our respective channels.
    Also, a challenge: based on your tier list, Seekers cast a long shadow upon the rest of the game. What would your power tier list look like if Seekers (and pseudo-Seekers like Darrell and Monty) were completely banned?

    I agree you are underestimating Preston really hard 😂
    Imo his best build is difficulty 0 mixed with spender events.
    You get Lola buying clues with -2 discount every round, shed a light, LWIF, gumptions and double doubling all those spending favor events.
    It is also self efficient enemy manager with Stealth/Flashlight 3 combining into Exploit Weakness, which is absolutely disgustingly strong.
    We cleared return to Dunwich on expert with Cho and Preston duo and that difficulty 0 Preston was insanely efficient

    I’ve been thinking about this a lot and I think your underestimating nat cho. Being able to sole fight for 3pm team and allow other two to fully focus on clues is crazy. Imo one of the top 3 straight fighters in the game and I think that carries a lot of weight. And though his mythos stats aren’t nuts he’s definitely survivable enough and his action compression on dealing with enemies is nearly unmatched.

    Regarding Rita, I think she may have enough economy to run Pilfer between Crafty and Drawing Thin. With them and Chuck Fergus (from A Chance Encounter(2) and a bribed rogue player), I've been able to have access to 4 recurring-resource resources pretty consistently. As for reliably passing, you want to be 6 above the shroud to get the card back. At a shroud4 location, that means testing at 10. She can get most of the way there with static buffs (Peter Sylvestre, Dark Horse, Track Shoes gets to 8). From there, you're either using Crafty (i.e. not using it to pay), 2x Ice Picks, a multi-tool, or committing cards. The issue with Rita is that she doesn't have a way to find all of the components reliably and it takes a full 3-4 turns of setup. If some cards happen to be clumped in the bottom 5, you're not doing a lot during the scenario.
    That said overall I think Rita is just a worse Wendy, both enemy management and cluever roles. I think she would be more interesting if her ability was 1/test (i.e. her elder sign) but when I'm playing her, I ask "why didn't I just play this with Wendy" more often than not.

  • @moooseman3
    @moooseman3 9 месяцев назад +1

    I also landed on Cluever for Jim, with a side benefit of having maybe the best horror healing in the game with Spirit of Humanity and his advanced trumpet. Having an ally with testless damage (in my case fighter Daisy with Ancient Stone and Blood Rites) is very good for killing his 5/2/5 enemy weakness through all of the curse tokens. He was also at least passable as a fighter early on, which was necessary until Daisy got her upgrades.

    Thank you, I learned a lot from this video. For example that Pilfer is such a staple card, like I rarely took it cause it is just too expensive. Same for Practice Makes Perfect. Also regarding Gloria, since she's a novella investigator, I'd wager most of us don't have her, and apparently that's not a bad thing.

    • @GuardianAngelEatos
      @GuardianAngelEatos 5 месяцев назад

      Yeah, she's not even interesting anyway and I Imagine makes the game boring. It reminds me of a character in a game called Aeon's End that controls the turn order, which is normally random and although the effect itself Isn't broken, it takes away part of the game that makes it what it is. There are so many powerful investigators and ones that are interesting that I can't see anyone purchasing to get Gloria or caring not having her unless they want the complete collection of the game.

  • @azuresparrow3453

    Didn't watch the whole video yet, but your discussion about Marie is I think an important function of the suboptimal investigators, they present a dream, they're the underdog to root for, they're something to keep tinkering at to finally make work. I think that process is as fun as finally finding that holy grail that makes them work.

      Oh yeah, without Taboo there's so much degen nonsense in Seeker. I don't know if it's the most taboo'd class, but it's the one that needed its taboos the most. Original Rex has all of current Rex's strengths and nearly the same clue pace as a well-piloted Amanda. Mandy runs a 30 card deck with instant scry, 0-exp Rooks. I played mega-Becky/tank Tommy through the Return to Carcosa recently and oh boy do I disagree with you on him
    If rookie mistake is in discard, you're unstoppable and just need to get your upgrades and start blasting, an if it's in the deck... You do the same thing! He becomes sort of a puzzle, with which you just need to kill off or not damage all your soak except for 1 cherished keepsake, which you can quickly recur with Tetsuo Mori. I think I had like 4 scenarios where I could reliably kill/tank everything, so my seeker just strolled around gathering all the clues, and my only rookie mistake was dropping a teddy bear for a few seconds (in others it went to discard with short supply or never got drawn)

    I disagree completely on Bob: guy is beyond bonkers; he is more or less Preston without any of the illicit limitations, in exchange of instead having limited amount of level 0 Rogue cards and no level 1 and 2 survivor cards... But survivor are much stronger at level 0 than the other Investigator, so Bob has by far the easiest early game of all EotE Investigators.
    He has an ability that comes up repeadetly in a scenario and give him and other Investigators insane action economy, Shrewd Dealings is one of the best signature in the game, giving him one of the strongest economies among rogues that don't outright print money like Jenny and Preston and he has a statline where you can do basically anything with enough commitment
    I still remember when I was playing as Lily in EotE and a friend of mine was playing as Bob and I saw him take 9 actions per turn clearing the entire board of clues effortlessly while taking 3 free actions (yes, free, not even actual actions) fighting the poor buggers that engaged him while I was bonking the occasional penguin with the Cyclopean Hammer that Bob paid for me.

    0:42-0:52 That's exactly how I go about ranking nemesis and mages in a game called Aeon's End and similar games like Lord of the Rings LCG! Oh no, there are infinite combos in Arkham Horror? That's no fun at all. I don't get why people would use them. At that point you might as well not even play the game and do something else.

    Love the content, so take this as a hint for improving further; why are so many Arkham content creators using "brain", "head" etc. for an attribute that is clearly named in the rules as "Willpower". Especially beginners are getting easily confused with the ever changing naming conventions on various channels.

  • @TheShanicpower

    I think saying that you’re ranking these Investigators by how they perform at their maximum power and then putting Kymani in C tier is massively undervaluing them. Kymani is not a flex character, they’re a Fighter who’s simply strong enough to also be able to investigate decently on the side. Played to their fullest potential they can compete with Mark or Tony for the strongest Fighter in the game.
    You have to think of Kymani like Darrel Simmons in a lot of ways, because the game truly isn’t designed around a fighter who doesn’t use the Fight action. Many enemies and treacheries for Fighters punish you for dealing damage or taking fight actions, and Kymani ignores those conditions completely.
    You argue that their ability is action inefficient, but Stealth (3) is a pretty essential buy which Kymani has access to from Level 0, and it lets them delete 3 HP enemies in scenario 1 without ever needing to find their weapon. A pickpocketing, or god forbid, two pickpocketing’s will allow them to practically have three upkeep phases every round, and that’s not even accounting for using other cards like the Lucky Cigarette case. There’s no shortage of good Rogue events, Dirty Fighting, Delilah, and other cards to help them deal damage when the rare enemy who shouldn’t be discarded pops up, and if nothing else works an Ornate Bow will easily handle it for them (although you hardly need it half the time). Couple that with their ability to run lockpicks on the side if they really don’t have anything else to do, and you have an insanely powerful Fighter who somehow also has decent Willpower in Rogue, and they’ll just not die.

  • @Kindlesmith70

    Interesting. Why do you feel solo isn't balanced? In what way isn't it balanced?
    I could say that multiplayer isn't balanced considering every character can focus on an aspect creating the typical holy trinity which is sadly something I don't particularly like especially when the focus is so string it breaks the game. I feel every character should be capable of doing everything, but at least one thing well which is key to winning the game even without any help from another player.

    • @sardrakonic672
      @sardrakonic672 22 дня назад

      I mean, the first problem there is powerful=/=unbalanced. Multiple people being able to cover each other's weakness' in order to double down on their strengths is...the fundamental meta of basically every multiplayer game. It's almost the entire point/appeal (tho there are obviously different ways to achieve this than stuff like The Trinity). AHLCG can, should be, and is balanced around those kind of assumptions bc it is in fact, fundamentally a multiplayer/team board game on first principles. This is extra obvious when you compare to another LCG, Marvel Champions, where the solo/1hero culture is a lot more prominent to the point of arguably being more popular, bc the game's fundamental assumptions and wincon is actually agnostic to different strengths and weakness' of character function (you fight A Villain and winning is reducing them to 0hp, and their doom/agenda equivalents can not only be mitigated, it's a fundamental character action that one of the deck colours specialize in so stalling control team is also an actual tactic, and basically any ratio of punch vs 'clue' can work if built sensibly). True Solo in Arkham is basically an accident bc there's only actually One action/specialization that wins the game, Clues, in 95% of scenarios, if you can't do that (and a lot of characters are explicitly bad at that) it doesn't matter how well you can punch or evade guys, you're fucked.
      Plus, esp with later campaigns pushing role requirements harder, specialization is already kinda built in bc a) the way stats work mean, unless you're finding workarounds, you Need to find a way to have good stat to meaningfully achieve something, and setups to be good at Multiple stats at a time are correctly rare, hard to set up, and have levels of investment that are relatively unfeasible in something like true solo. and also b) it's a card game. The lean towards specialization over generalizing is extra strong in card games, bc playing with a deck of cards is both inherently random bc of the realities of deck order RNG *and* the fact that, unless you're a high powered Harvey-esque seeker, you're not gonna see all those fancy cards you added to your deck in any given game. Decks are smaller in Arkham, but games are also shorter, so games will just End when you still have like a third of your deck left if you aren't a high churn character. My personal rule when it comes to being more tryhard about cardgame is that, you should be able to win with Any half of your deck, bc either it contains things you win with, or has things that can dig to the other half that has those things instead. Otherwise, you end up with the real situation i've had with a new mystic player in my recent games where you simply Don't draw say, your clue-getting half of the deck until the game is basically over. If they had been someone who actually had to carry team progress, we would've just been screwed.
      Plus, like, this is the game that printed Seeker and Guardian as two of its classes, who even after early sets were so clearly the Cluever and Fighter classes with 95% exclusive focus that there's no way the devs really believed in the core set potential dream of scrappy generalists. We already have multiple (and will soon have even more with Drowned City's release) investigators with 5 in one basic proactive stat and 1 in the other, the Specialization boogeyman is already coming from inside the house.
      EDIT: god lmao, i forgot to mention the other big one, Carson. You do not print an investigator like Carson in a game where being able to generalize is Actually that important. That's probably like a big reason Carson was so controversial when he was released, he was the devs saying the quiet part out loud about how this is definitively, in their minds, a team game where sometimes being good/functional at something is Other People's Job.

It’s once per phase so you can potentially deal as much as 4 damage testlessly in one turn. The weakness can be tanked by having Peter take half the horror and using the 1 to ping a monster. I’ve gone entire scenarios holding dark memory, it’s not hard.

    I think that ranking investigators by power level in arkham is missing the point, I prefer to think of them as hard mode, standard mode and easy mode investigators.
    For sefina you want to focus on agility get chuck fergus, crafty, pilfer(3) and watch her eat clues.
