  • When it comes to chronic pain, it is a lot less about the tissues than you may think, and a lot more in the way of the nervous system driving it.
Special high-threshold nerves called nociceptors help to keep us safe, by always being on the lookout for things that may be a potential hazard for us. This can be in the form of extreme pressure, temperatures, vibrations, stretch, and even chemicals. However, the point at which your brain tells these nerves when they should classify things as potentially dangerous differs from person to person, day to day, and minute by minute. It can be affected by diet, thoughts, time, location, or even who you are with.
With chronic pain, nociceptors can often become a little touchy and respond a little or a lot faster than they actually should do. So, when we factor in something like being afraid to move, or associating pain with damage, they can start to respond to a lot of things that they really shouldn’t be responding to, even to the point that a simple t-shirt can cause pain.
Whilst nociceptors are not pain signals, because there are no such things, they are very fast as they carry lots of important information about things which may be dangerous. However, it is the brain that needs to decide what it wants to do with this information about a potential danger. This is where your brain comes in, as your brain will use any and all information you hold, even its not actually true. So, if you have been told you have a bulging disk, your brain may see that as a potential issue that’s needs to be protected. Keep in mind though, around 70% of 60years olds who don’t have any back pain, have building disks…with no pain.
Welcome to episode 1, hopefully helping you to see that brains just go with what they think is best: based on the info they have.
