- Our modern review of "Outrageous!", the underground independent Canadian 70s comedy that became a classic of gay and queer cinema, and represents an important moment in the history (herstory) of drag. Before drag queens could become the global superstars they are today, pioneers like female impersonator Craig Russell blazed the way. The movie also features iconic Canadian drag queens of the 70s such as Michelle Ross and Rusty Ryan. Renowned gay playwright Brad Fraser, a Canadian icon in his own right, and his young straight friend Spencer Schunk take a contemporary look back.
It's the gay Baby Boomer versus the straight Millennial as we review, rate, dissect, and celebrate movies ranging from iconic classics to cult hits to mostly-forgotten gems of old Hollywood. This is Old Movies for Young People.
"Outrageous!" (1977) was written and directed by Richard Benner based on the short story "Making It" by Margaret Gibson from her collection The Butterfly Ward. It stars Craig Russell, Hollis McLaren, Richert Easley, Allan Moyle, David McIlwraith, Andree Pelletier, and Helen Shaver.
