1998 is the year Al changed into his appearance into what he is today. His glasses were removed because of LASIK, his mustache had been shaved and his curly hair became long instead of short.
I was flipping around here and just found this. I was there!!!! It was a HUGE surprise that Al showed up. My girlfriend at the time and I had breakfast with Jon that morning and he didn't say a word about Al being there. It was amazing!!!!
Thank you SO SO much for posting this! I was never able to make the '98 con, though I very much wanted to. I DID, however, make 2000 and 2002, so I was able to meet him there eventually. However, this random appearance by Al was very storied in the community at the time, and I was very sad to have missed it. If you were at 2002, I was the dude that had his costume lost by Greyhound and went shirtless during "Bedrock Anthem" at Amanda's recommendation. THANKS AGAIN FOR POSTING!!!!!
Now I love how Al opened with "Tacky" in the Mandatory World Tour, but holy cow, I think this just blew that entrance out of the water! (Still think it's second best though!)
I heard all about Al's surprise appearance, but never saw any footage until now. I was not there. I didn't make it to a con until AlCon III. Thanks for posting that. That was cool.

The video must have been recorded earlier than when he walked in.
From the pictures, it looked like Al just combed his hair to make it look like it used to or something.
At the time he wasn't sure whether or not to wear them for the sake of his career as opposed to his personal life.
That was a great day and the start of some excellent adventures. :-)
