That wasn’t even rehearsed because Axl never turned up for rehearsal. And that made John Deacon even more anxious than he already was. Elton helped calm him down before the show.

Apparently Elton tried to see Axl before they went on and his security wouldn’t let him into his dressing room saying he was sleeping. He was kicking off saying “I’m fucking Elton John!” First time he sees Axl is when he comes flying onto the stage

The moment Axl entered that stage, Rock history was made.
You should now watch November Rain the live version with Elton John at the MTV awards iirc.

In the last few years, not one has gone by without me watching this performance. The way Axel whirls onto the stage like a tornado and sings with his unique, incomparable voice blows me away every time. And with Elton such a nice contrast and fits together very well. So many good performances from many artists!

Axl was a completely unpredictable and unreliable guy at the time and had locked himself in his dressing room. It didn't open and when Elton John was already singing, no one knew if he was even performing. The relief was huge when he suddenly danced and sang across the stage like a dervish. The fact that he shook hands with Elton John was also a surprise that no one expected.

His security wouldn’t even let Elton into the dressing room. He was apparently shouting about backstage saying “I’m fucking Elton John!”

There are so many beautiful performances in this concert. I have watched the whole show several times over the years and it always gets to my heart.
George Michael did a great job with Somebody to Love. David Bowie and Annie Lennox do a great job with Under Pressure as well. ❤❤❤❤

I don't know if you already know this but I'll say it anyway. Elton and Freddie had a very special (friendship) relationship. Freddie and Elton each had favorite artists that they loved their paintings. Freddie loved looking through auction catalogs. So even on his death bed Freddie was thinking of his friends. The Christmas after Freddie passed Elton had a knock on his door with a delivery. It was something wrapped in a pillowcase. There was a lovely hand written note from Freddie and inside the case was a painting from Elton's favorite artist. Elton tells this touching story in an interview I saw online. Elton says he still has that painting on a stand in his bedroom.

Queen is the greatest band of all time, no doubt about it, we never saw a tribute show like this before freddie's death and we haven't seen another after, and for roughly 90% of singers that took part in this tribute this was their biggest show ever (and most were really big names)

I've seen this whole concert so many times it's the greatest...I'm in my 60's and I can't believe I've never seen this one before! I look forward to watching you guys, you are the nicest and most sincere people. Have a nice day.

Elton looked surprised hearing the crowd singing with him. I often wondered if he improvised what he originally intended because of the crowd.

At that time Axl Rose was temperamental and unpredictable & nobody knew if he was going to sing the last part of Bohemian Rhapsody but I think he did it out of respect as Queen were a major influence on him. If you're not aware of the slight awkwardness Axl shows when singing the last few lines with Elton, it's due to Axl making homophobic remarks some time before the concert happened as this was due to Axl being sexually abused as a child & admitted that he was homophobic as a result. I managed to see Axl live with Guns N Roses a year after this concert and he gave everything into his performance as when he was on it, he was on it.

Lucky me was at this concert! It was stunning epic! And as I was still young back then and I didn't knew most of these great musicians. It was the first time I heard (of) Metallica, Guns'n'Roses, etc.
But be sure: As soon I was back home in Germany, I went to the record store and bought a lot of new vinyls and discovered a lot of "new" music, from those classic bands I've never heard before! :)

I'm so late , but I just wanted to tell how deeply i felt your tears and sorrow. It just so unfair and tragic that so many young people had to suffer and die of Aids because the government ignored the "gay cancer " (as the politicians in charge called it) for such a long time. Heartbreaking!! Thanl you for your beautiful reaction :)

At the time, Axl Rose was being unfairly painted as homophobic. He wasn't homophobic, even if he was unpredictable and unreliable. Seeing him and Elton John share the stage, shake hands and put their arms round each other ended the homophobic narrative.
Axl has also said he loved Queen, and got his "carrying half a microphone stand" act from Freddie

Wembley Stadium guys. It’s the home of the England international football team. It’s 80,000. Wembley ARENA is an indoor music venue down the road, 10,000 capacity. Much smaller. This was the tribute concert to Freddy. Musicians came from across the world to perform their own versions of Queen songs. Every gigantic rock star in the world turned up for Robert Plant to David Bowie. Metallica to Deff Leppard. In my opinion the best concert ever. Better than 80s Live Aid.
