- Ramsey Dewey reads Chapters 9 and 10 from legendary world heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey’s magnum opus boxing book “Championship Fighting”.
His description of punching with the second knuckle with a vertical fist is the same as I was taught in...Wing Chun..of all things.
I agree I thought the same as he was describing it
KFG Wing Chun Sifu said the same thing.
YYYEEESSS!!! I've been waiting for this... I already read the book but this is just another experience XD
Tried this step by step as described in the book, and immediately felt my lats engaging in the punch using the second knuckle instead of the middle and index! I didn't even realize how much shoulder strain there was until feeling the difference! The Straighter wrist alignment makes my punches feel a lot sharper, slightly faster, and much easier to control with less force through my connective tissue. Such a simple concept with mind boggling implications lol
I actually bought this book after watching you read the first few chapters. Was a little confused about how he was teaching the uppercut. Thank you for continuing to record your readings of it!
its like something you see all the time and even have in the back of the head but only when it is put in words do you realise the deinition of what you are knowing
Hey coach, recently I've been feeling lost and at loss, walking straight into a big moment of defeat in my life, mostly due to my failure of action but ultimately a sacrifice for the path that I've chosen in life..
I came hoping to listen to your words for some comfort and solace, but now as well I'm leaving with a newfound awareness of my powerline and a will to discover my stepping jolt.
Thank you as always for your timely words and for reading these chapters, I can rest a little easier now, peace and blessings to you 🙏🏽
Dewey on Dempsey? Delightful!
Even your name has a rhythmic alliteration to it. How pleasant :)
I bought this book a few days ago and I’m already over half way threw it, and yes I have tried the activities that Jack instructs you to do. It’s a great book, anyone who wants to learn boxing should get it.
Oh wonderful to see you continue this! Best bed time story for a martial artist.
Dude... this work should be in Audible. I looked and this book isn't on there, would be nice to get the complete Audiobook with your Narration. Thanks for taking the time to continue this work..😎👍👊
Championship fighting is my favorite lullaby.
This makes it so easy, plz continue this man upto atleast uppercut chapter.
Edit:I am a bit disappointed that you did'nt show the stepping jolt punch technique but plz keep it up.
This really got me thinking, and I realized that the shape of a vertical fist fits perfectly snug along the lower side of a face and jaw with the pronounced middle knuckle locking tightly under the cheekbone leaving just enough space for the index knuckle to lay flat on the cheekbone.
I had everyone in my house try this, and everyone's fists locked perfectly with their own and each other's facial bones like a lock and key.
I think that just reinforces Jack Dempsey's idea that punching each other in the face is what Mother Nature intended 😂
Been waiting a long long time for this video man
Please create a playlist of the videos were you read the book
By the way you can make a great audiobook reader with your voice.
I’ve been waiting for this!!
Thank you for the chapters Ramsey, been waiting for awhile, hope you complete the book.
As I listen to you reading to us this book, I slowly notice that Bruce Lee got some of his Jeet Kune Do principles from Jack Dempsey.
Could you review *"The Straight Left"* by Jim Driscoll in the future?
I was informed by Greenville Academy of Martial Arts _(RUclips Channel)_ that Bruce Lee also got many Lead Hand Striking Principles from Jim Driscoll.
RUclips Video Source: _"Who Taught Bruce Lee - The True Origins of JKD"_
There are huge swaths of text and illustrations in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do lifted straight from Dempsey’s book.
masters inspiring masters
@@RamseyDewey, I own The Tao of Jeet Kune Do and I noticed that as well!
Great Martial Artists inspiring Great Martial Artists indeed, Marco!
...and Jim Driscoll.
Thank you so much for posting this! I too have been waiting for this. I’ve rewatched the first 2 parts several times now. Sometimes I listen to it while I drive to pass the time
HI Ramsey, I really enjoyed your book reading, will you be able to read more of the book and upload in the future? I'd love to hear the whole book.
I cant wait to read this book bro!
It’s one of the best.
I've tried jack dempseys method of punching and im BLOWN AWAY... and sadly also a little let down by the teachings ive received from literally everybody else... Im struggling now to reconcile between practicing what my coaches want me to practice, and learning this correct way of punching... I mean the difference in power between my normal right straight and a right jolt is absolutely staggering. The normal right straight is also alot more tiring. My coaches will have me do fluffy jabs and twirly right hands, long swingy hooks, and they try to correct my fist position from upright to horizontal, even though upright lands sooooo much heavier, with no downside in comparison. Its kinda sad. Why do i pay 65 euros a month for a pro boxer to not even teach me the falling step, correct fist placement, the hip swaying motion in a true uppercut, in a way, pretty much everything this book explains in great detail. It feels like my boxing education has been carried out the opposite of methodically like jacks book, but rather messy, inefficient, willy nilly so to say. How can I learn to reconcile both schools of thought?
Keep what works, discard what doesn’t.
can you make a video for me on your technique with tge book please
I hope it's not another two years before we get the rest of this gold 😆
This is really cool - I wanna pick this book up! What I like is - this is the same concept as what a makiwara is used for in karate. A lot of the time it’s touted as a means to “harden your knuckles,” but a much bigger part is learning in a (semi) safe way good structure of landing your punches as well.
I studdied that book so long my hardback version was falling apart. For over a year i always thought by the ball of your foot he meant just lower down than the toe not the heal which is what it is meant to be. Great book helped me bob and weave away from many punches and alot of people teach a two knuckle landing punch which is ridiculous, i spent so much time with the book my brother bought me a 1st edition with a D/J which must've cost a bit.its said to have been Bruce Lee's favourite book. Thanks for making a vid on it
This is the real stuff.
This is placing my wing chun in a whole new light. Wow! I've been wanting to read more from him as well.
HEY RAMSEY LOVE YOUR SHOW , I AM 54 AND WANT TO BEGIN TRAINING IN B.J.J., I FOUND A GRACIE TRAINED BLACK BELT WHO HAS HIS OWN SCHOOL AND NOW I MUST PUT FEAR AND DOUBT BEHIND ME AND BEGIN GROWING AS A PERSON.
Great! Thank you!
Forget Creepypasta, it's time for Ramsey Reads.
Awesome book! I would love to see a video of you doing these techniques or a video of fighters doing these principles
I need all these
That book is very well read.
Can’t wait for Ramsey to show demonstrations of some other Dempsey techniques
I missed this series.... thx RD
big fan Brother
Sweet. Like another commenter said, if you're serious about boxing pick this book up. I did a few years ago and it helped me improve my punching by a great deal.
It finally happened
Good stuff lad 👏👏
YES!!!
I’ve binged all3 of these today ha, might as well buy the book if I can
Excellent, thank you.
yeesss been waiting for this .
PS its also a good night sleep story
I read the book years ago, so many years ago i forgot about it till i saw this. Its a great book! And now a word about the reader...coach ive said before how your voice, and apearance remind me of billy zane, but with this reading, you have "out billy zane'd" billy zane ! Im gonna save this video and use it as a bedtime story for my grandkids! Your an amazing speaker coach!
Loved the series, any plans on reading more?
This was awesome. You should read other Dempsey books. 1010
Thanks man
Father Christmas narrating the big book of boxing.
SURPRISE SURPRISE THE KING US BACK !
That is one well worn book.
thanks
Love youuuuuu....
You forgot to start with ONCE UPON A TIME
Shhh....story time has started with grandpa dewey...lololol....jkjkjk
wow, i just heard the other 2 videos, and i feel lucky today now xD
I am pretty unsure now. I've been training the index and middle knuckles, immagining creating a "stabber" through the two converging bones and into the forearm. my pinky and ring knuckles are about half the size. I often punch the bag bare knuckle and my striking knuckles are getting pretty tough. Is it really wise for me to punch using the smaller ones?
Short answer: no. Long answer:Nooooooooooooooooo.
In all seriousness, I assume for one that it's impossible to be highly consistent with the knuckles, but if I had to choose, I'd choose the big 2. I think Dempsey is straight up wrong on that one.
@@jansettler4828 thanks, I'm going to stick with it.
I do think that there is logic in the three knuckle contact, I feel that the hand is more stable on impact and the arm has an efficient and straight extention.
I'm sure people make it work.
@Martin I can punch a stone wall full power no problem. I don't know where this myth comes from that punches without protection will break hands. What kind of glass bone do these people have. If there's a spot that receives extraordinary pressure, it's the wrist, but even then, correct fist position will protect it.
@Martin ive been punching, and im certain that 3 knuckle contact provides a more stable striking platform for the the punch. the fist can clench more rigidly when the pinky is squeezed. the shorter shape of the hand means that there is less leverage between the knuckles and the wrist meaning there is far less possibility of twisting your fist on impact which allows one to apply more force through the arm. the problem is the little chicken bones.
I think the way to use dempseys technique with the big knuckles is to apply more focus to the clenching of the pinky finger which will provide near to the same rigidity in the wrist
yesssssssss you got my comment last week yesssssssssw
where are the next chapters??? can’t find them
The next chapters are in the future!
Those old school gloves are they the same as the everlast 4300 speed bag gloves? The punch professor discusses that the old school fighters all used these. He pointed out nowadays boxers do not practice this and that great champions like Joe Lewis, Ali, Marciano all had a great understanding of this secret. The secret of the old school non padded gloves and its ability to strengthen the small bones in the hand.🧤 He said it much better than me but that’s the jist of it.
So the straight jolt its delivered with vertical fist?
I read the book and think I understand shoulder whirl but it makes no mention of rotating the hips. I also saw a video on power punching that said the hips should move before the shoulders. Could you elaborate on the shoulder twirl? The drop step is real simple but surprisingly difficult to do the way he described.
8:42 every time I got lazy on the punching bag and hit with a horizontal fist or landed with the index knuckle it hurt my wrist. The shock goes right down that isolated knuckle
Do the Gruffalo next!
Best ASMR
Coach can you read the book of five rings next ?
That book is awesome
Though it's great to know >about< the falling step and how to punch hard, the most important thing is the path to uncovering it for yourself, or the "means of production". Without that pathway, the knowledge is not very useful. You have to have the proper motivation or "purpose" in order to go through the rigors of learning the path. It is helpful to know the path is there. Finally, you have to have favorable environment (time to train?) and favorable genetics. Just some additional thoughts...
Hey coach. I have heard a lot of people (on the internet) say that the full crouching position as teached in the book is not effective that the Dempsey roll "Would be easyly countered". And people saying that's the reason why we not see much more crouching boxers like Marciano o Dempsey.
What is your opinion on this?
You have a really good voice, dude. I know people have said it, but I must add my compliments. Ever think about voice acting or some screen time?
Is this a job offer?
@@RamseyDewey lol If I ever option that novel I'm writing, you'd be a shoe in!
Connor uses the lead hand as a pawing distraction
Hey, do you have any videos demonstrating the moves from this book? I am really bad at visualizing what's described here despite the detailed description.
My grandfather was a golden glove boxer back in the day in Chicago. He saw the Dempsey v Tunney fight first hand. When I asked him, grandpa... Who was better, Dempsey or Tunney, he immediately responded... DEMPSEY! He died 2 years later.
And Mike Tyson admired Dempsey's style and technique.
Tyson's trainer felt Dempsey was good but not as good as Tunney, who he ranked number 4 and 5 Ali time behind Joe Louis, Muhammed Ali, and Rocky Marciano, as the greatest heavyweights of all time. ...I may have their thanking off by one because I seem to recall he had that black guy from the teens just behind Ali. Yeah... They were ranked 5 and 6.
Hello, have you any reviews on boxing books?
Ramsey, apologies if I’ve missed this but does the punch land before the foot hits the floor, after or when it hits the floor, great video on a great book thanks
At the same time.
@@RamseyDewey ok thanks
👍
In every video of jack dempsey fighting or punching a heavy bag I never see him do the jolt or punch with a verticle fist. It makes me wonder if it's a practical punch at all.
How do you do the straight punch with the rear hand and incorporate the falling step the way he explains?
ruclips.net/video/I-w79C22yNc/видео.html
@@RamseyDewey Thanks for your response! I had a look at your trigger step video and it's still a bit different than his explanation. The way he makes it sound is you still fall with the front leg, except you throw your cross instead of a jolt. The problem I've had with doing it exactly how Dempsey explains is I tend to end up in an over-extended stance after throwing the cross.
I'm wondering if maybe the technique begins with the lead falling step to get into range, the cross gets thrown upon floor impact, and then ends with the trigger step the way you've shown in your video. The only problem I've had with doing it this way however is the first step tends to telegraph the second step (and hence the cross itself).
Any further insight would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Nice biomechanical description of punching but...
What do you have to say about the uighur camps?
I think I may have gotten him arrested... Whoops.
Merci.
i wish you could demonstrate whathe is sayin
So I've been watching a lot old training videos of fighters like Dempsey, Jack Johnson and other fighters from the early 1900's doing this sort of bicycle motion with their arms. As if doing the speed bag in the air. What is this?
Fighters today don't seem to do that. Should they?
Hand fighting
Where the duck are the other chapters? 11+
Does he say anything about people who broke their wrist and pinky knuckle in boxing? I feel kinda attacked lmao
Hey Ramsey do you consider grappling fighting
Grappling is something that can happen in a fight.
Keep reading this please
so what do you think about clubbells
@a 2345193 hahahaha that was a great one
Why dont you finish the book 🥺🥺
Is their illustrations in this book...if so I might check it out...but if not I don't think it would be wise to "copy and paste" into actual training...but like I said illustrations go a long way.
There are line drawing illustrations but they are extremely basic and I don't think they are crucial.
There are illustrations basic ones but definitely illustrations. I was able to understand it but I had to look very carefully
Ramsey is flashing the illustrations on the screen
30:24 I know what you did there :D
I read the text of a book word for word. That’s what I did there.
Gripping .
