The thought that “adults” get so offended by these things and resort to playground insults and personal attacks, especially through the internet, would be hilarious if it weren’t so pathetic.
Why do BJJ blackbelts spend so much time trying to turn BJJ into the very traditional martial arts we were trying to get away from when we started BJJ?
I think that meme where you see a monkey evolving to a human, only for the human to say: "Go back, we fucked up", describes the situation pretty well 😂
I don't think early BJJ was trying to avoid being a traditional martial art. It was about using bad martial arts as a way to promote itself, but it always had very traditionalist elements to it. At least the Gracies' style did.
@@leonardomarquesbellini correct! But maybe what the commenter is saying is that many people nowdays go into BJJ because it actually makes you a good fighter, unlike many traditional schools. At least i think that that's what they meant
Even Count Dante didn't attack his competitors on the street. He would casually disguise himself as a policeman and try to blow up their gyms with dynamite.
I've actually learned a LOT more about life, religion, philosophy and other things over the last 2 years since watching Ramsey's RUclips channels that really have nothing to do with MMA or martial arts. That's how great of a teacher he really is due to a great combination of a few very key factors.
Never be ashamed of your faith. Your commentary reminded me of a Chicago gang survey we did in the early 2000s, where we asked retired gang members: why did you join a gang? 80 percent of the respondents said that they never wanted to join gangs as children. They looked down on the gang members. Then they started to get bullied and decided to join a gang for protection. Like a mother of a former gang member told me: my sons were small and had to sneak down allies to go to and from school. Then they decided to join a gang, and then they traveled in four or more packs of kids and walked down the street protected. I see self-defense schools in the same position as gangs to the average bullied person who joins them. You join a martial arts academy with the intention of making yourself indestructible. You fantasize running into your former enemies and shutting them down. Sooner or later, you either get good at the art, or you quit and buy a firearm. The ones that pursuit being a good fighter, gain self-confidence, and better themselves in life, never picking a fight with anybody.
I used to get emotional and offended when people would result to personal insults. After I learned to pause and remain calm, I see personal insults as a subtle sign that they were exhausted of any reasons instead. Sorry you have to deal with that Ramsey.
I think the best argument for bjj being useful for self defense is that you're used to uncomfortable situations and keeping your cool when your biological programming would tell you to freak out. There's nothing magical about it though and it won't translate perfectly either. Also you kind of have a feel of where your physical strength stand and how others could kick your ass so you might just engage less in these messy situations.
@@HaroldBluetooth-uz1zz For sure! I like to think even my own white belt could help me well in some situations, but BJJ covers just a limited subset of what assault situations would put you in so I wouldn't get too cocky about it.
Man…a youtuber I follow recently had a major health issue and, naturally, there were lots of people offering their prayers in the comments. What shocked me were the people replying to those comments with insults! Some people really feel the need to go after faith wherever they see it, I can’t help but wonder why?
I think it was jerry fallwell, a powerful pastor, that changed the church in America from apolitical to political by endorsing a president - never done before. He was a very powerful man. Then when religion stepped off the reverential pulpit to play in politics they fucked up. They started to be authoritarian and be a mouth piece for corrupt pols. They made God a political issue. That played out in America until Obama. Now culture is religion, and most ppl don't know it. I never needed organized religion just because. I notice it can be great for community but many times groups.od folks then use tidy out groups and shit goes to hell. So, i respect folks faith if they understand they are no better than I, who tried to live a moral life based upon the gifts my mind and whatever wisdom "God" gave me. So, many folks are dumb, and many folks are dumb atheists or dumb religious zealots. Neither of them realize just how destructive they are.
The more stressed I am by daily life the more I see imaginary enemies around me, e.g. on the subway ride home. Those imaginary enemies, they grow inside of me, the are resilient as heck, immune to reason, and ultimately can only be stopped by death. Over time I managed to snap out of these imaginary fights by remembering that "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." I can see these burdened and unpleasant people as human beings again and pray for and bless them instead. (Mt 5 + Lk 6). But, man, it sure is scaringly easy to hate the guts of people you feel threatened by to the degree you wish they were eradicated from this world... :/ Power fantasies ultimately can't put our mind at ease, only love and compassion can.

Another superb video in which you show perfect logic, good philosophy, excellent vocabulary and a very refined sense of humor. One personal question: are you an Asperger? I am, and only learned it after my 50s. I ask because you talk a lot like myself: 1 - You laugh while talking seriously and talk seriously while making jokes. 2 - You keep a cool appearance even when moved by emotions. 3 - You mix a high-end intellectual vocabulary with popular expressions with no apparent rational criterion - you just follow what your mind tells you. 4 - You speak one word at a time as they reach your consciousness, frequently including long pauses between terms of sentences, giving a hard-time to people with Attention Deficit Disorder (about 90% of the social media commenters' population). 5 - Your metaphors and analogies go a long way and sound surprising (and weird) for the average citizen. 6 - Your conclusions always tie up with your introductions, indicating you're keeping them in mind from beginning to end. Asperger or not, we both exhibit all those characteristics on our speech behavior. Cheers from Brazil! Keep the good fight going! P.S.: I am a Roman Catholic. Its origin story is way cooler than the story of the Mormon. Without it, there would be nothing to protest against, just for starters... 😆

14:00 I've had exactly what you are describing happen. I used to run a pub and I had to throw out a drunk guy who walked behind the bar and assaulted one of my female staff, I grabbed him and started getting him out, he grabbed my t-shirt and I instinctively broke his grip. I ended up ruining one of my favourite t-shirts and was more angry with myself for doing that than with him. I never made that mistake again, on another occasion I had to throw someone out and they grabbed my t-shirt, I just let them keep hold of it until I had them outside the pub, at which point I gave them one hell of a shove and their grip broke naturally, without ruining my t-shirt! hurrah!
Sometimes I get the impression, that people aren’t over that fight that they lost against their highschool bully. And next time they’re going to be ready, even though they’re in their late 30s.
Well.....I can tell you, I grew up in an extremely violent small town. The handful or so of street fights I had were split between someone attacking me and me helping a person that was getting beaten to a pulp. I can't stand by and watch that, so I intervened a bunch of times. (70's)
Hey man I’m a devout Muslim but attacking peoples religion just because of a martial arts meme is crazy to me . We must all treat each other with respect and dignity.
"Imaginary enemies" got to me - this is a good short description of a quite complex problem. I'm not so critical about SD industry but the attitude problem of it's clients you got spot on. BTW I was a victim of a few assaults as a teen. In exactly zero of this scenarios being good in martial arts would make a substantial difference in the outcome. They pick the victim, location and "rules". On the other hand since I got bigger and more self confident and more situation aware I very rarely get bothered by anyone, much less assaulted.

Thank you! BJJ has now become the safe and fitness version. Like what happened to Tae Kwon Do and Karate. Every place you go to now, they don't start standing and apply real sparring. Going to the clinch then to the ground. They all just start on the ground and no striking. McDojo BJJ.
I always thought that the reason for Gi was that if you train clothed wrestling in your regular clothes, they will tear up after a couple of classes and it gets really expensive. So people came up with practice clothes that can last for a couple of years before you hear that ripping sound. And once you’re always in those weirdly and unrealistically durable pants and jackets… well, the techniques evolve to take advantage of that specific context. Not that this contradicts anything Ramsey said. Cheers
It is all about fear. When you grow up in rough environments, you seek something that will make you feel secure. Imagine going outside and having fear that you will be killed. Imagine walking in your classroom and being scared that you will die. Imagine going to elementary, scared that you will die. Imagine going to Highschool being scared that you will get killed. Imagine fearing for your life that youre gonna end up in jail and that the cops will just take you away and etc etc. It happens to a lot of us. Inner work is needed here
I think they’re called “street fights” because colloquially being “on the street” just means being out and about around town. I believe it comes from a time when cars weren’t common yet so it was typical for people to just walk around and do their daily business on the streets. Also “sidewalk fight” would just sound a lot weirder.
One observation I forgot to include in my previous comment: it's amazing how you answered what the importance of the gi really is without explicitly saying so! How many among the attention deficit hordes will notice that? 😂
Ever since I started wearing a gi jacket with shorts I've not been attacked by a single congressman or mormon. I don't understand why you want to take that protection away from me. In fact I haven't had many visits at all. Also, regarding 5 degrees, I'd say that it depends on if it is celsius or fahrenheit. If it is Celsius then everything is comfortable, but for Fahrenheit you may want to put on convertibles in case it starts snowing.
Humour is better than ever was, it's just the internet lacks so much of non-verbal communication that fearful and angry people (at that is most of us) easyli misjudge messages.
Self Defense is easy, protecting others can be hard. Self Defense is not the same as Fighting Back. Defense starts with awareness; you really do not have to engage in anything if you do not wish it. Turn left instead of right if you know the right turn leads to a conflict you do not want. You choose. Some things can be unavoidable though. Home invasions do happen, although not often, and usually the homeowner has no idea why. The most common reasons though are Burglary or S-A.
Hey, Ramsey. I have a question and request for a video. Can you talk about the romanticization of Muay Thai? I've seen a surge of people wanting to or currently going to Thailand to do Muay Thai full-time. It's really romanticized online, because everyone sees people training, and the problem I see is that they do nothing but training and never get any downtime. I feel like that would affect their mental health badly. As someone who's done martial arts for a very long time, what is your opinion?
This always is a dumb narrative. Not everyone can run away. Defusing and walking away is best. A CCW and the ability to grapple is the backup if saying “sorry” doesn’t work.
@@ILoveWeightedPullupsTalking your way out of an assault has never worked. Sprinting into the middle of a crowd has a proven track record. Also, no martial art is going to save one person from a group. The last thing that someone wants to do is grapple while several people are attacking them.
@@perceivedvelocity9914 It's pretty rare for multiple people to all of a sudden jump you and start attacking. Usually, there was some scenario that led to that; you spilled a drink on one at a bar, failed to deescalate, his friends see him getting into a fight and come to his aid, etc. Usually, you won't have a choice in the grappling matter. They're going to lay hands on you, so you'd better know how to grapple not to engage, but to disengage. Likewise, many of us are worse runners and better shots than the average person. Hence CCW and grappling.

Even the term "street fight" is so dumb. But honestly none of this is surprising. Most folks want to sound like a badass. It's our animal nature. It seems anything combat-related really gets our goat, since we're hardwired to take pride in our combat prowess, especially men, real or imaginary (the latter much of the time). My argument is an unpopular one. Martial arts and self-defense are NOT one in the same. They are two entirely different concepts. Anything athletic, be it dancing, martial arts, or even football, will give one a physical edge. But that's not why you play a sport like that. You play to play. Not to "defend yourself." Every moment one's safety is not being immediately threatened is successful self-defense. NOT getting into a fight and beating someone up. That's called being a d**k.
I'm 70 and I've been beaten to a pulp maybe seven times. Once a decade, not bad. I would say 99.9999999% of the time even sucker punches are avoidable. I rode a bicycle from 1958 to 2018 for transportation. From 2005 to 2018 I was collided by a car driver seven times. My left leg bones are titanium. When I told the cannabis doctor how many times I had received deep concussions she didn't believe it. A speeding Escalade can ruin your night for the rest of your life. The doctor said I was overqualified for cannabis. She was telling a joke.
I'll admit, I rolled my eyes at first, but did eventually get the joke. Also, Ive found that the importance people place on the gi is a bit ridiculous, and have always hated how the long sleeve gi is the standard becsuse I think it looks weird. I have a personal training gi that i modified by shortening the sleeves and pantlegs, making it far more comfortable, and a bit more asthetically pleasing to my eyes. And yeah Im a manga, video game, and action film fan, and wearing the gi does feel a bit empowering because it does make me feel like a fighting game protagonist, and that helps me train because it makes it more fun. Larping makes training more fun for nerds like me.
I like the Gi because It lets me feel like john wick with all the scarf chokes, but I don't have to go to JC Penney's every week and get a new suit to ruin on the mats
Hey Ramsey! I love this video! Sorry for kinda re-asking the same question, but I actually wanted to change the question a bit. What would you rather do (starting from scratch) 3x bjj a week or 2x bjj + 1 mma a week? All the best
Omg LoL cosplaying in the gi! I just got out there and trained!I had my 2nd class in a dojo in 12 yrs. (We did a bow and Arrow too). I wore a red gi. Now I'm ken from Street Fighter apparently so I put Hadoukens on everbody. My BJJ was rusty but patience and calm kept me safe. The guy i rolled w ...I couldn't pass his guard and he was so strong, which changed my game. I constantly felt threatened but a got a mounted crucifix after he tried a triangle! I remembered Kelly Starret's lessons and recovered posture and minded the armbars, etc. MAN! What a rush. ...and the Pradal Serey. Its so cool. I'm doing Neak Ta specifically. The footwork is fun. I'm having success w 'Dragon' and 'Tiger' stances which is funny bc that's my zodiac. Not that i put tons of stock into that but its fun. Do you know much on the topic of Pradal Serey, Bokator, or the Khmer warriors? It's fascinating to me.
I know this has nothing to do with the subject but I want to ask you something. My shoulder dislocated about 3 weeks ago. I watched a video that you made when you had the same injury. Did your shoulder re-dislocated? Did you have to get surgery?
If Ramsey sees this comment it's a miracle. Heck if any of his fans even reply it would be unusual. Ramsey is clearly a busy public figure, but what I like about him is he is wise. How do you find similarly wise coaches? Almost all gyms can get you competent at fighting but maybe i'm asking too much, but I also want someone that's a good life influence. I'm in Tokyo of all places so idk.
I've never understood the gi/clothes argument. When a teen I trained in aikido and one of the instructors was a police officer with a background in judo. When he taught, we did underhooks and all that good stuff. He never taught to rely on the gi, and said grabbing gis/clothes just makes throwing easier
BJJ, huh? Oh you mean the watered down and safe version of BJJ that is like 99% of every BJJ school now? Not the original and hard style of Rickson Gracie? I have actually left several BJJ schools or even MMA schools having BJJ classes because they are training to get beaten. They start on the ground and butt scoot. It's ridiculous. It is now a 100% McDojo sport. Every time I ask, "wait, shouldn't we start standing, get the clinch, avoiding spar hits or grabs, and then go to the ground?" "Can you please really struggle and fight and stop scooting on your butt?" BJJ black belt is like a Tae Kwon Do black belt now. Many of these guys and girls train safe. It's sport, tradition, recreation, and fitness now. Same thing happened to Karate and Tae Kwon Do. Once hard and serious arts, now recreational McDojo sports. You have every right to be calling out and making jokes about modern BJJ and the black belts. Joke or not. It's just true. BJJ is no longer the fighting art of Rickson Gracie. All I tell people now is you train at a serious MMA gym with serious fighters and the coaches were serious fighters or you are doing nothing and learning nothing. I just tell people now to copy Khabib's gameplan, if they are serious. Other wise, you are McDojo sport. Don't want to do serious sparring and seriously check your style or techniques? Then you are recreation and sport. And many of these BJJ black belts are doing that and training people for that, but falsely claiming it's self defense and serious combat. I'll quote Sho'nuff the Shogun of Harlem, "+++++, please!"
Unless by “younger guys” you mean less experienced grapplers, than sure, 100%. Grip fighting against someone who doesn’t understand grip fighting at your level gives you a massive advantage.

Coach ive got anothe question: Youve said you dont like doing general cardio and to just do your sport for cardio. So my question is: For BJJ, what BJJ specific drill do you enjoy doing for cardio? I found the hand in the middle drill where you jump side to side gets my heart rate to 80 percent within like a minute. Do you have anything like that?
That is not what I said. In my two videos on “the cardio myth”, I discuss correct athletic breathing at length. If you want to get your heart racing, and spend more energy, just add jumps and burpees and level changes into whatever you’re already doing. But here is a question for you: why specifically do you want to do that? (That is not a rhetorical question, by the way)
@@RamseyDewey sorry if i misunderstood. I thought you meant youd rather just do more of the specific sport. So I just like alot of cardio in general. And I read a comment someone was aaking about cardio and there was a comment that made an interesting point. You might agree or not. They said the "just do more of the sport specific cardio" is for beginners, because as you become better at BJJ, you get more efficient, thus using less energy so your cardio doesn't actually become better. So you should seek cardio gains outside. So I was curious if you have anything you like doing as "bjj cardio". Whether by yourself or just to make your students sweat
I completely agree with you that street fights are generally available and if you’ve been in more than one or two, you’re probably the problem. Also, the fact that these people can’t recognize humor is a little funny 😄
This was awesome, Ransey dont let the loonies get you down, keep having fun and make more fun of every art, heres one for the bjj maniacs. How do you make bjj more fun....just take out a J!
You may have addressed this before, but what is your advice for people who *do* get into "street fights" of a sort regularly, and can't withdraw and often can't escalate - i.e., law enforcement officers. I've seen some people say BJJ training should be mandatory for LEOs as the best way to handle the "fights" they get into - subduing resisting suspects.
BJJ is an excellent option for subduing an opponent who you don’t want to hurt badly. It usually encourages being gentle with training partners, and that does convert over to real life scenarios. That said, BJJ can do life altering, even lethal damage if needed. Does this mean you should look no further than BJJ? Nope! Judo and wrestling are great options too, and usually come with the benefit of possible escape, in exchange for gentleness. Also worth noting, most BJJ schools train little to no takedowns or striking defense, so don’t think that by training BJJ you are becoming an invincible fighter, you aren’t. Reality is, cross training is optimal. If you lack the time or money for cross training, choose between BJJ, Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Sambo, or Judo; all of these have good video evidence to support their efficacy against untrained opponents even as lone martial arts. Karate, Taekwondo, Krav Maga, Ninjutsu… these can work, but you are more likely to find a convincing Mcdojo, not a legitimate self defense school. Pick one of the viable options above, and you should be set for 75% of scuffles. A remaining 20% can be made up for by street smarts (to avoid fights), and a concealed weapon permit (for multiple/armed opponents). The last 5% of fights include factors you simply (in my opinion) cannot control. All this to say should BJJ training be mandatory for LEOs? Probably not a bad idea, but be careful not to think it will make them an unstoppable force of nature. It’s one tool in a complete fighter’s tool belt, a good tool, but still just one tool.
Back from BJJ class, it was No Gi as usual, nice interjection of the word kerfuffle into the video by the way, that word doesn't get used enough in my opinion. Missing the Gi a bit to be honest it helps slow things down a bit for us less athletically inclined people, plus it means everyone wears something very rope like around their neck, its BJJ on easy mode.
My X girlfriend's entire family from dad's side was mormon. Till grandpa died and showed up in his wife's dreams burning in hell screaming to get out of that church. She woke up an extremly scared and that same day they all went to the nearest catholic church. People dont joke about their just diceased loved one burning in hell in eternal suffering so that was clearly traumatic. Talking about foundation The catholic church definately has the best conception story since it is actually in the bible not in some freemasonic third testament from a diobolical sect. You must convert to be saved. That aversion many people have against the hirarchy of belt ranking systems might come from their aversion to the hirarchical structure in general steming from their rejection of the catholic hirarchy. Lets not forget MARTIAL arts have a relationship with the martial or military world and the military has a hirarchy.
I get the distinction you make between "street fights" and "aggravated assault." What do you call the actual fights between two individuals that take place in some place other than a ring or cage? "Unsanctioned?" I am referring to fights in people's backyards, or like in abandoned buildings a la King of the Streets. Only asking for distinction's sake. Illuminating discussion.

Understanding the consequences of violence and knowing your own limitations are both good deterrents from getting into fights. At the same time, there are a lot of martial arts practitioners and self defense gurus who never would have gotten into a fight in the first place who like to bring up this talking point.

I don't think early BJJ was trying to avoid being a traditional martial art. It was about using bad martial arts as a way to promote itself, but it always had very traditionalist elements to it. At least the Gracies' style did.

If a black belt has a good submission on you good luck escaping.

I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I thought this was America!

I ask because you talk a lot like myself:
1 - You laugh while talking seriously and talk seriously while making jokes.

I ended up ruining one of my favourite t-shirts and was more angry with myself for doing that than with him.
I never made that mistake again, on another occasion I had to throw someone out and they grabbed my t-shirt, I just let them keep hold of it until I had them outside the pub, at which point I gave them one hell of a shove and their grip broke naturally, without ruining my t-shirt! hurrah!

What nobody understands is that not only is the gi necessary, but the best defensive move in a street fight is to immediately sit on the ground.

It happens so very often.
I firmly believe that good cardio is the best self defense. Our pride will not allow us to run away. Our pride can get us crippled or worse.
The reason why humans managed to survive on the Serengeti is because back then they knew that running away was a survival mechanism.

Not to "defend yourself."
Every moment one's safety is not being immediately threatened is successful self-defense.

They said the "just do more of the sport specific cardio" is for beginners, because as you become better at BJJ, you get more efficient, thus using less energy so your cardio doesn't actually become better. So you should seek cardio gains outside.

Thank you this hilarious title made me laugh
Your church is indeed goofy but his takes on the gi are spot on. Looking forward for some hard rolls in Outer Darkness for all eternity though
How's your knee doing @RamseyDewey?
Pretty bad today.
@@RamseyDewey damn, that competition by rokas really did a number on you, huh? Sorry to hear that . . .
@@efarjeonfgc Well yeah, I'm crippled for life and I need a total knee replacement now.
The joke went over my head but i still liked that other video 😅
I get the distinction you make between "street fights" and "aggravated assault." What do you call the actual fights between two individuals that take place in some place other than a ring or cage? "Unsanctioned?" I am referring to fights in people's backyards, or like in abandoned buildings a la King of the Streets. Only asking for distinction's sake. Illuminating discussion.
We call those “secret underground Bloodsport death kumites” obviously… or unsanctioned fights, if you’re in a hurry.
Mutual Combat
@@RamseyDewey Mutual Combat. And in cities it's likely to become a victim of Aggravated Assault in one's lifetime, be that sexual assault or armed robbery. Some of us are actually serious about helping good be prepared to avoid it or best be prepared to handle it. You're a giant in China, an elderly woman, or young girl, or disabled bjj student like one of my followers is a much more likely target of violence in various major cities around the world. You shouldn't down play that. I'm big, and yet been attacked with weapons, armed robberies in the U.S. and Africa.
Many self-defense proponents think that knowing how to fight plays an important part in avoiding fights. Do you think that there is any validity to this?
Understanding the consequences of violence and knowing your own limitations are both good deterrents from getting into fights.
At the same time, there are a lot of martial arts practitioners and self defense gurus who never would have gotten into a fight in the first place who like to bring up this talking point.
I enjoy the gi, but I know that nogi is more practical, especially for where I live in Florida. I still have never been in a street fight, but I find my bjj very effective against my nephews when they try wrestling me.
Yeah stop fighting in the Streets 👏😐
Just got back from Shanghai and what a amazing place to live. Very jealous of you Grand Master Sensei Dewey. The heat is relentless though. I tried searching JX fight club whilst over but couldn't find your gym. When you search Ramsey Dewey Shanghai it comes up with a bunch of articles but none of them reference your gym.
You didn’t find my website? It’s linked here on my RUclips page. The JX Fight Club closed about 5 years ago, by the way. I’ve been working at other gyms since.
I just searched “Ramsey Dewey Shanghai” on Google and my website was the first search result. I wonder if Google gives different people different search results? I have heard that happens depending on search history.
In any case, it’s a shame we couldn’t train together. Maybe another time!
@@RamseyDewey I didn't have a vpn in china so had to use Bing CN. Damn it's been that long since JX, I knew it had changed but can't believe its been 5 years. Il be back again next year anyway.
@@RamseyDewey oh and I just googled "Ramsey Dewey Shanghai Mma". Every result on the first page is about JX.
Hey man, my local congressmen are some rough dudes.
Fear Mongols is a very true statement about commercial martial art clubs and industries. If you wanna really upset jj all you got to say is there is no such thing is no gi grappling that is stolen wrestling 😅
Ive been watching your channel for a while and i do agree with your stance on "da streetz", i havent done "street fights". But what about for middle school, high school, college kids that experience bullies. Couldnt an argument be made that that could count as a "street fight?"
*Topic swich*
Are you following any of the Olympic games? Ive been watching the judo matches and some boxing and fencing, since wrestling hasnt started yet, and theyve been pretty interesting. But which olympic sports are you more into and follow?
If we fight you about the origin story, will you be wearing a suit jacket?
Can you please do judo for self defense , because i like your opinion
someone might get attacked in the middle of a board meeting, LOOOLLLZ!
Well, thinking about it, back then a lot of people wore jeans jackets, which would be kinda relevant to the Gi question.
But then on the other hand, whenever I saw people with jackets of any type streetfighting, they took their jacket off 99% of the time, I wonder what the reason was...🤔😁
