  • These videos are for people who want to become familiar with JASP and learn how to use it for statistical analysis. I am going to begin by showing you around the JASP workspace. This video will show you how JASP works, demonstrate its similarity with other statistics software, and get you familiar with how “progressive disclosure” allows you to focus on the analysis as you work. This is the second in a series introducing statistics students to exploring statistics with JASP.
    Chapters
    0:00 Introduction
    0:30 The JASP Splash Page when you open the program
    2:00 Loading Data in JASP (Open data from Excel, OSF, or SPSS)
    5:00 JASP example datasets are included
    7:13 Editing data
    9:30 Suggested workflow for JASP
    10:00 Exploring the JASP workspace (The Data pane, Analysis pane, & Results pane)
    15:52 Save your work and close JASP
    Download the Friendly, Free, Flexible, Functional JASP software from the official JASP statistics website: jasp-stats.org
    This video uses the dataset debug and JASP version .0.13.0

    Thank you, Dr. Daniel, for making this collection of videos. They are the perfect suite of videos for introducing my students to JASP as well as the usual key concepts examined in most introductory statistics course. I intend to make good use of them; why should I re-invent the proverbial wheel? I know I could not do better! I am most thankful!

      I'm using Mac Numbers. Each time I edit the data I have to export as a CSV and then it changes in JASP, is there a way without exporting each time?

      Glad it was helpful! I try to work in some kind of musical reference or small joke into all of the videos. It's mostly 70s & 80s music, so no everyone picks up on them. Of course, David Byrne is back, so maybe that on his more current. Thanks for the comment!

      I have not used Numbers (just Excel)...if you export from Numbers as a CSV, open in JASP then save as a JASP file (save as), that should put the data into a file. You can edit the file in Numbers and those edits should still save back into the JASP file when you close Numbers. Hope that is helpful. Best I can do.

    Thank you for the helpful tutorials
    I am currently working on a meta-analysis and in this context I am preparing a subgroup analysis. I have not yet managed to calculate the heterogeneity (I^2 = xy %) between the subgroups. Is this possible with JASP? - Would be very grateful if you could help me further.

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  3 года назад +1

      I don't know of a direct way to calculate heterogeneity but if you have the elements of the formula (such a a value that needs to be squared or converted to percentage) you can calculate a new variable. I would also suggest doing the calculation in Excel (or other spreadsheet program), then importing your calculated variable back into JASP. Good luck!

    Hello Sir! I've come across JASP and your tutorial videos in search of a method for analysing multiple years of annual congregational data for a denomination I serve in Estonia. My main goal is to standardize our data gathering system and to separate the data itself from the analyses we run using that data. To date, we have managed our data in Excel files which has been fine, except that the data is subject to corruption as files are copied and sent out per request. I have two questions:
    1. How does JASP manage multiyear data? One long dataset with an ID representing respondant-year, or annual datasets connected by common variables?
    2. If the latter, is it possible to query multiple datasets based on common variables?

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  3 года назад

      At this point, you would need to do the data cleaning in Excel or perhaps in R and then get it into a single dataset for analysis in JASP (they may add better data handling in the future). You cannot row-bind or column-bind data from multiple datasets. JASP is good with the analysis, but you want to have clean data going in. Good luck

    Hi there, I get to the step where I save it as debug.jasp on my desktop but I am unable to open that file once I do. It is stating I don’t have the correct application, but it says none are available in the application store. Is there something else I should do or I am not doing?

    Hello sir,
    I am currently a student and I apologize if I sound frustrated at the moment, but JASP has been giving me a lot of trouble. I am trying to have the edits reflect back to my JASP document, but it doesn't. The document automatically opens excel without giving me an option on how I want to open the dataset, thus it opens it to an older version of excel. The problem is I have windows 11 one drive, and for to except the edits or the debug version edits, I need to save it as document format one drive recognizes and accepts. If I do that, then JASP still doesn't recognize the change. But it won't actually save the changes done on the older version either. I am not sure what I am doing wrong, can you please help me?

    How does Jasp compare to Jamovi? I know Jamovi but have to use Jasp for a new class and I feel like it is familiar but I am kind of interested in how they compare.

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  3 года назад +1

      JASP and jamovi started as the same open source project. When some of the developers left the original JASP team, they continued developing the software, which became jamovi. Both are great. jamovi has some strengths over JASP in its ability to create R code and options in various tests. I recommend learning one, then trying the other because the skills are easily transferrable.

    Sir…I followed your instructions and saved excel sheet as .cvs to my desktop. Then I opened it and imported the .cvs file into JASP. I then went to main menu…clicked save as…computer…desktop…saved it to desktop…and a file saved to my desktop as expected. When I try to open it however, it will not open in excel and it tells me the “file is corrupt”. I’ve tried with other spreadsheets as well and it always comes back “file is corrupt”. So now I can’t work on my data set and I can’t move forward. Please advise if you have a moment. Thank you so much 😊

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  3 года назад

      If you try to open the JASP file (the one that you imported then saved) in Excel, it probably will not open. You should still be able to open the original CSV in Excel and the .jasp file in JASP. I hope that answers your question. I'd recommend sticking with JASP as much as possible rather than going back and forth, if possible.

    Hi, prof. Silvio here, speaking from SP-Brazil. And the new button doesn't exist in JASP?

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  3 года назад

      If I understand what you are asking about, the "New" is not so much a button as part of a drop-down menu that lets you get to more data settings. It is under the main menu icon, pancake stack. Hope that helps.

  • @kgsfitness7806

    So update…I was able to open it in Numbers…but when I edit the data like you said…1 to 1000…and I go up and hit save…it saves the doc to my desktop but the edits do not appear in the data set in JASP. frustrating when the first step goes bad right?

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  3 года назад

      Wish that I knew better what to tell you. I'm worried about the "file is corrupt" error that you have something wrong with the file, rather than the data. When you save as a JASP file, it should save your actual data plus the analysis. If not, I worry that the problem is something other than the data because the software is not functioning as it usually does. When that happens to me I try to go back to raw data and create a pristine dataset so I can start over. Wish you the best with this project

    If I double click on the '1' to change to 1000, it opens it in Numbers. If I edit it in numbers it breaks Jasp. I don't understand why and it doesnt seem user friendly. I tried saving out to a new Jasp file and making sure it isnt read only but it still doesnt let me edit in Jasp, or open in Excel - only Numbers. It's confused me and I think I'll have to stop this tutorial

    Please stop saying "data are". It is NOT correct English, and you know it. You use "data point" as the singular, which proves you know "data" is uncountable and not the plural of some other singular form.

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  2 года назад

      Thanks for the comment. According to the APA Publication Manual (p. 96), the word datum is singular, and the word data is plural. Plural nouns take plural verbs, so data should be followed by a plural verb. Cheers.

    • @carlkenner4581
      @carlkenner4581 2 года назад

      @@ResearchByDesign Yes, but the APA is objectively WRONG, and you know it. "Data" is NOT a plural noun, it is an uncountable noun, and people need to have the guts to tell the APA that they're wrong and ask them to change their guidelines.
